Over the past 30 yrs., she has published over 50 books for children. New Hampshire Aviation Museum Features Speaker Series Amherst’s Maggie McAlary Named Two-Time All-American Equestrian Maggie McAlary continues to make her mark on the Auburn Equestrian Program earning two Varsity Eques- trian All-American honors BOSTON, MA –e Varsity Equestrian Selection Committee has awarded Inaugural All- Ameri- can honors to the top four equestri- an athletes in each of the respective events offered by Varsity Equestrian (Equitation on the Flat, Equitation over Fences, Horsemanship, and Reining). Auburn University’s Mag- gie McAlary, a junior from Am- herst, NH, has earned All-Ameri- can accolades in both Equitation on the Flat and Equitation over Fences events. Commenting on the inaugural class, Lindsay Neubarth, Chairper- son of the Varsity Equestrian Steer- ing Committee explained, “is is a very exciting time for Varsity Eques- trian. is is the first year that we are able to award and acknowledge the top equestrian student-athletes in the country. is inaugural class really has something to be proud of. It is a true honor to be selected and these young ladies have represented their schools well.” During the 2010-2011 season, McAlary earned eight MVP awards. Speaking to her versatility, four of her MVP awards were for excel- lence in Equitation on the Flat and four of her MVP awards were for excellence in Equitation over Fenc- es. In addition, for the second con- secutive year, Maggie was named MVP in Equitation on the Flat and MVP in Equitation over Fences at the SEC Championships. Maggie ended the season winning over 90% of her Equitation on the Flat events and over 87% of her Equitation over Fences events. Maggie achieved all this while being a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Auburn Equestrian’s Head Coach Greg Williams said, “is is the first time we have awarded All-American accolades in our sport and we are not surprised to find Maggie McA- lary on this elite and foundational list. Maggie has brought so many firsts to our program. As a fresh- man, she became the first Auburn Equestrian athlete to be named the Most Valuable Hunt Seat Rider at Varsity Equestrian Championships. As a sophomore, Maggie was select- ed to compete in and won the Inau- gural Collegiate Equitation Chal- lenge. is year, Maggie once again brings new achievements to the Auburn Equestrian Program with not just one, but two All-American awards.” Williams added, “Maggie has one of the strongest résumés for indi- vidual accolades a young rider her age can have. Opening ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, April 13th, 2011 at 6:00pm CT at the Extraco Events Center. Coming off its second straight SEC Championship victory, the Au- burn Equestrian team enters the Varsity Equestrian National Cham- pionships with high seeds in west- ern and hunt seat competition. Both the western and hunt seat squads have earned byes in the first rounds of competition, which begins April 14th, 2011. With a 15-1 record, Auburn’s hunt seat riders secured the top spot in the nation. As the No. 1 seed, they will face the winner of No. 8 Kansas State and No. 9 TCU in the second round. At 11-4, the western riders earned the No. 3 seed, setting them to play the winner of No. 6 TCU and No. 11 Fresno State in the second round of competition. Auburn will begin compet- ing April 14th, 2011 once the first rounds of competition have been completed. e championship rounds for both hunt seat and west- ern will take place April 16th, 2011. Amherst’s own Maggie McAlary has been named to the Inaugural Class of Equestrian All-Americans (twice). e Aviation Museum of New Hampshire continued its series of presentations in commemoration of 2011 as the Centennial Year of Na- val Aviation on Saturday April 9th at 11 am with featured speaker Nor- man McKinstry. Mr. McKinstry, who was a resi- dent of Amherst, NH, was born on the island of St. Kitts, British West Indies. After graduation from Monroe College in Jamaica ear- ly in World War II, he enlisted in the British Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve for flight training and as- signment to flying duty as a Royal Navy pilot. e US-UK Lend-Lease agreement in the Atlantic Charter of 1941 provided for the training of 50% of all British Naval Cadets in the United States. Mr. McKinstry chose to complete his flight training under this program with the U.S. Navy in Michigan and Pensacola, and earned his U.S. Navy Wings of Gold in December 1944. He qualified in the F4U Cor- sair fighter in Jacksonville, Florida, joined British squadrons (1849) in Brunswick, Maine, and (1850) in Northern Ireland, and went aboard the newly commissioned carrier HMS Vengeance at Glasgow, Scot- land in January 1945. Vengeance service included the Atlantic, Med- iterranean, Indian and Pacific the- aters. In the Pacific, with Task Force 37 under Adm. Amherst’s Own Liam Murphy Finishes In 3 Way Tie for 2011 New Hampshire High School Chess Champion! Don’t you just love when good things happen to good people.... ? Here he was just trying to do a nice thing for his town chess club by working to get e 2011 NH Individual Chess Championship Tournament scheduled to be played in Amherst and then he goes out and wins the thing just for icing on the cake !.... Con- gratulations Liam for securing a great tournament for all of our scholastic chess players and for your amazing personal result.... You have worked so hard to steadily improve your chess and have been a model of consis- tency and fair play in the thousand or so years ( all right 10) you have been a member of the Amherst King Bish- ops Chess Club... Liam was not alone in the limelight today (... do limes actually give off visible light? ...well anyway...I di- gress) Sean McGrath finished 8th in the High School section..... Yeah Sean...Who’s your daddy? Oh yeah...It’s me.... Mason Young was 4th in the 29 player Elemen- tary section with a 3-1 record and Liam Earley,Tommy Darnall,Ellie Chase, Steven Pariselli and Eli Young were all in close contention, just out of trophy position.. Amherst’s Paul Trombi, a 2nd grader playing in his first chess tournament won 2 and drew 2 games to win the 3rd place trophy in the 14 player Primary section just ahead of fellow Amherst King Bishops club members Aidan Ahearn and Will Darnall who placed 4th and 6th respectively with 2.5-1.5 scores... Amherst’s Ethan Lim and Luke Broding took home the 8th and 9th place tro- phies on tiebreaks just ahead of fellow club members Christopher Chase and Siraj Husainy .... Several other Amherst King Bishops Chess club members braved this state championship tournament and they all came away with points and won the praise and admiration of their parents, teachers and peers for their team spirit and fair play under pressure....Kudos to Bill Drake, Sofia Husainy, Josh Lacaillade, Miles Lim and Daniel Pariselli. In a strong field of 74 participants from across New Hampshire every one of our 20 local scholastic chess players were models of sportsmanship and helped each other learn and grow as friends and for that we are most proud. Congratulations one and all.

Maggie McAlary continues to make her mark on the Auburn Equestrian Program earning two Varsity Eques-trian All-American honors
