GEOGRAPHY The United States of America is the world's third largest country in size and nearly the third largest in terms of population. Population: 300,000,000 Located in North America, the country is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Along the northern border is Canada and the southern border is Mexico. There are 50 states and the District of Columbia. 5. The Cardinal Points 6. United States of America 7. North America 8. The United States Flag The national flag of the United States of America consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing fifty small, white stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. 10. The American Flag It is known with the following Nicknames: "Stars and Stripes "Old Glory", "The Star-Spangled Banner". 11. The Bald Eagle The bald eagle is the national bird and symbol of the United States and is a protected species. 12. The Symbol of USA Freedom and Power 13. The Declaration of Independence On July 4th, 1776, American leaders approved the Declaration of Independence. A new country called The United States of America was formed. 14. The 4th of July 15. Thanksgiving Day Long ago people called Pilgrims left England and came to America for freedom. The first winter was long &amp; hard, many Pilgrims died. But the next year, the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims learn to live in a new land. To celebrate a good harvest, the Pilgrims &amp; the Native Americans shared a special feast of Thanksgiving. 16. Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November 17. Labor Day Labor Day, the first Monday in September. It is a holiday that honors the working people. 18. Halloween Many Americans celebrate Halloween on October 31. Celebrations include costume parties and trick-or-treating. 19.
