Dear Dr. Giles:

At the recent meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences the Executive Council authorized me to establish a new section of the Academy in Forensic Anthropology. The American Academy of Forensic Sciences is a professional level academic organization similar to other academies of medicine and the sciences, and membership is by invitation to those who have attained a high level of professional competence in one of t11e forensic sciences. The enclosed brochure explains the nature of the Academy. The major purpose of the Forensic Anthropology Section is to get together as many as possible of the people who are actively interested in human identification as members of this national organization that will keep them in working contact with the forensic pathologists, lawyers, dentists, and criminologists, who are also actively interested in applying their professional skills to matters of public concern.

I am writing to invite you to become a charter member of this new Forensic Anthropology Section. You have been selected because of your known interest in and contributions to the field of forensic anthropology. If this Section is to become successful and flourish, it will need the interest and support of people like yourself, who are experienced and eminent in the field. If you would like to become a member of this Section, please fill out the enclosed Application for Membership and return it either to me or to the Executive Secretary:

James T. Weston, M.D. Department of Pathology rtedical Center University of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah 84113

If enough people are interested and prepared to present papers at the next annual meeting in Atlanta in February 1972, I hope to schedule a Forensic Anthropology Session during the scientific program proceedings. If you would like to present a paper at that time by invitation, please be prepared
