CHAPLAIN’S CORNERFavorite Halloween decorations include jack-o’-lanterns, ghosts, witches on flying broomsticks and, of course, black cats. Traditionally, black cats were associated with witches and dark magic; the witch hunters of long ago targeted cats as well, because they were afraid of them.

We often fear what we don’t know, whether it’s a cat or a person or a change of some sort. Anyone who’s been around the block a time or two has had some unpleasant surprises—and some unexpected delights. In Halloween-speak, life is full of both tricks and treats. The trick is to be mindful of the treats, which we might also think of as blessings, and to let our world be colored accordingly.

As for the idea of cats being evil? Don’t be ridiculous. My cat is lovely, and I’m sure it’s just a trick of the light that her portrait turned out as it did.

—Chaplain Kathy Hall

GARDEN TIME by BOBBIE ELLISThe stars of the Memory Garden are again the two hibiscus shrubs at both ends of the garden bench. They have bloomed continuously since they were planted. Thanks to volunteers from the Garden Committee, who have watered and dead-headed them, the hibiscuses have thrived beautifully and continue to do so even as the daylight is shortening. We hope that autumn might be just a little late this year to appreciate these bright and showy flowers.
