2 :: CIU Upward

Three years ago the Alumni Association Leadership Council (AALC) experi-

enced a leadership change when I became the president. As my tenure comes to an end, I reflect on how I’ve grown to know and appreciate those who serve so faithfully; from the administration, faculty and staff to the countless alumni and student volunteers. Be assured that the CBC/CIU you knew when you studied at either the downtown or Monticello Road campus is alive and vibrant today. CIU’S rich heritage is combined with a promising future in the fulfillment of its great mission.

During this past year, your AALC has grown to 23 members. Their commitment in prayer, time, ideas and critical thinking has been invaluable. We’ve endeavored to honor our alumni who work in vocational ministry, but also tried to cast the net wider to encompass the 60 percent of our alumni who are in the marketplace and pinpoint how we may better represent them, encourage them to return to campus and inspire them to give back to CIU through their business expertise. With the addition of more majors, including the Business & Organizational Leadership program and our athletics program, we are expanding our alumni’s global influence to impact the nations through professional ministers, such as pastors and missionaries, and ministering professionals represented by those in the marketplace.

One of the things I observed during my term as president is how your participation in Homecoming encourages the faculty and staff. Continued connectivity and affirmation of CIU’s leadership by our alumni validates the heritage and assures that the future will remain steadfast in the shared values of biblical teaching.

I encourage you to make a special effort to join us on campus for Homecoming 2013 from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 as we celebrate CIU’s landmark 90th anniversary! Keynote sessions will include:

• Chapel highlighting our four living presidents and their spouses

• President’s luncheon featuring author and pastor Rob Morgan (’74)

• Introduction of our new Alumni Association Leadership Council president

• Alumni of the Year Chapel - Mark (’73) & Linda Thomas (’73) and Chris (’73) & Bonnie Thomas

• Concert featuring Steven Curtis Chapman, Laura Story (’03) and Jason Gray

Thank you for allowing me to serve,

Shirley Hunt Moreland (’71) [email protected]

Fall 2013 :: 5

What are you looking forward to most in seeing your classmates for your 10-year reunion?

I am most looking forward to hearing all that God has done in and through their lives since graduation. There are so many things that I remember praying for in our class and since we serve a God that does exceedingly abundantly more that we could ever ask or imagine, I have no doubt that the God stories we will hear will be tremendous!

How did your time at CIU influence who you are today as a musician? Mom? Wife? Church Staff?

One of the things I love about CIU is the training I received was holistic and applies to all the different roles I serve in life today. CIU taught that our chief end is to glorify God in all that we do whether that is playing concerts as an artist or changing diapers as a mom.

What words of wisdom do you have for current CIU students?

I would encourage them to go deep in their time with the Lord. When I look back on the short few years at CIU, it is clear to me that God really set apart that season of my life for learning. And though I love this new season of marriage and parenting and ministry, part of me misses that time with just me and my Bible sitting by the lake, spending long afternoons just me and the Lord.

When you attended CIU, what were your dreams/goals for the future?

As a subpar student, my goal was simply graduating! :)

Honestly - I didn’t have a ton of dreams or goals going into my time at CIU. But the more I learned about the great need for the gospel in so many areas of the world, the more God began to challenge me concerning my role in the advancement of the Kingdom.

If you were to write a song about one of CIU’s core values — which would it be?

It is hard to pick just one. I am in the studio now recording for my next CD and there is not one of the songs that I don’t hear these (core value) themes echoing within the lyrics. Even in my songwriting process, Scripture is both the catalyst and the focus. The end goal is always the edifi-cation of the believer and the evangelization of the nations.

Where do you see yourself in 10-20 years?

Enjoying life with Martin, and praying much over Josie’s teenage years! Hopefully still serving at Perimeter Church in Atlanta, teaching the Bible to women and mentoring worship leaders.

What do you want fans to most understand about your ministry?

I have to be honest. I’ve never been a huge fan of the word “fan.” Through the years we have been blessed with thousands of supporters of our ministry – people who have purchased our music and prayed for our family. In my mind those people are friends not fans. So more than anything I would want them to know how appreciative my family is of their support and prayers over the years.

What do you like to do in your free time that doesn’t have anything to do with music?

When I am not making baby food and doing laundry, our family loves to hike and be outdoors.

What is your favorite verse?

Right now - Ephesians 2:10. “For we are his workman-ship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” I love

the idea that we are not only created by God but created for good works ordained by God before the foundation of the earth. That He would invite someone like me to be a part of something that extraordinary is the truest evidence of grace.

Where would you go if you had a time machine?

I’d go back to my freshman year at CIU and I would not make a “D” in Dr. Beyer’s Old Testament Survey class.

Where did you and Martin meet?

We met at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes cookout in Spartanburg, S.C. when I was in high school. Martin was one of their star baseball players and I came because I wanted to meet a good looking Christian athlete!

Do you have any pets?

If you count the 14 squirrels residing in my attic, then 14. F

Laura Story is a 2003 graduate of Columbia International University known for writing the #1 worship song “Indescribable” and for her Grammy Award-winning song “Blessings.” She serves as a worship leader and women’s Bible teacher at Perimeter Church near Atlanta, and is married to Martin Elvington. They have one child, one-year-old Josephine (Josie). Story will be performing in concert at CIU Homecoming 2013 with Grammy-Award winner Steven Curtis Chapman, and celebrating her 10-year class reunion. She responds to a Q&A with “Upward” magazine.

After graduation from Columbia International University, then called Columbia Bible College, she went on to a 40-year career in pioneer medical, educational, and church work in the frontier region of Colombia, South America. Her life is documented in the book, “Senorita Aimee,” authored by her sister, Marguerite Cartee.

Her brother, Robertson McQuilkin, president emeritus of CIU, described Aimee as a “sparkling presence in our lives from birth,” and “a model for us to follow with a life well lived to the glory of God.”
