Highlights of the Life and Career of Paulo Coelho
Paulo Coelho entered the Guinness Book of Records as the author that signed the most books
in different editions (October 9th 2003, at the Frankfurt Book Fair).
A Norw egian community, Arendal, gave copies of The Alchemist to all its civil servants as a
w ay of stimulating a new type of thought.
Many MBA courses, such as the one from The Graduate School of Business of the University
of Chicago recommends the reading of The Alchemist to its students. This book has also been
adopted in schools in France, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Taiw an, The U.S., Spain, etc.
The illustrated edition of The Alchemist, w ith art by the Moebius, has already been released in
many countries.
The book The Alchemist has been adopted in schools in more than 30 countries, offering
special editions to students.
Paulo Coelho has managed to have three titles at the same time on bestseller lists in France,
Brazil, Poland, Sw itzerland, Argentina, Greece, Croatia, and Russia.
Pope John Paul II w elcomed the author in the Vatican in 1998.
The World Economic Forum gave its most important prize to the author, the Crystal Aw ard.
Coelho has a w eekly column in the Brazilian new spaper O Globo and in several other
new spapers around the globe.
In March 2000, the French government gave Paulo Coelho its most prestigious title: "Chevalier
de L'Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur."
In January 2001, Paulo Coelho became a member of the board in the Schw ab Foundation for
Social Entrepreneurship.
The life of Paulo Coelho has already been the theme of documentaries for Irish TV (Seven
Days: A Journey with Paulo Coelho), Japanese audiences (The Road of Kumano in February,
The Road of Santiago in September), People & Arts Channel (Paulo Coelho: The Alchemist of
Word), A&E Mundo, TV Prima, among others.
Paulo Coelho has now his ow n drink: chocolate chaud w ith orange. It is a special homage paid
to him by the Hotel Le Bristol's bar in Paris, w hich is a setting for some of the passages of his
most recent novel The Zahir.
During the months of March, April, May, and June 2006, Paulo Coelho traveled to celebrate the
20th anniversary of his pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella in 1986. He also held
surprise book signings—announced one day in advance—in some cities along the w ay, so he
could meet his readers. In ninety days of pilgrimage, the author traveled around the globe and
took the famous Trans-Siberian train that took him to Vladivostok. During this experience, Paulo
Coelho launched a blog, Walking the Path, in order to share w ith his readers his impressions.
Since this f irst blog, Paulo Coelho has expanded his presence in the Internet w ith his popular
daily blog, and on MySpace and Facebook. He is equally present in media-sharing sites such
as YouTube and Flickr, offering not only texts but also videos and pictures to his readers on a
regular basis.
From this intensive interest and use of the Internet sprang his bold new project: The
Experimental Witch w here he invited his readers (and f ilmmakers) to adapt his book The Witch
of Portobello.
Indeed Paulo Coelho is a f irm believer of the Internet as a new media and is the f irst bestselling
author to actively support the online free distribution of his w ork.
