The agricultural population in Brittany

Agriculture accounts for 5.9 % of the totalemployment in Brittany(3,5% in France).

71,400 people areemployed on farms.

The number of selfemployed workers hasdecreased as opposed to paid farm workers. The percentage of paidfarm workers in agricultu-ral employment hasincreased from 12 to 34 %between 1992 and 2009.

62 % of farmers work in farms, 27 % are womenand 21 % are over 55years.

Young farmers set uptheir own business at anaverage age of 30 with ahigher level of education(35 % have a level of BTSA,(27 %) more than in 2005).

27 % of paid farm work is in specialised crops(vegetables, horticulture,plant nurseries …) and45 % in livestock farming(milk production, meatproduction…).

62 % of paid farm workers have an open-ended contract.

Out of 37,657 farms,27,916 operated atfull capacity in 2007*.

74 % of Breton farmsare businesses whichuse 94 % of the farm-land. The averageacrage is 56 hectares.

69 % of a total of 7,2billion euros genera-ted by agriculture (-12 % compared to2008) came from animal production in 2009.

Safeguarding of natural resources

The entire region of Brittany has beendeclared a "zone vulnerable" to nitratepollution. As a resultfarmers are obliged to follow strict pro-grammes to help theenvironment.

Reinforced planshave been introducedto reduce nitrogenfertilisers to protect9 rivers.

8 bay must realize aregional projectagainst green algaedevelopment.

Since 1990, the useof mineral fertilizercomponents hasdecreased:- 17 % for nitrogen- 39 % for phosphate- 53 % for potash.
