The average life expectancy increased by ten years since 1960 for the women, and of about nine years for the men. The number of persons of 80 and more years old will grow of 180 % before 2050.

Decrease of the rate of fertility

After having reached a record in 2008, with more than 2 children by woman, the fertility slightly bent last year, going back under the symbolic bar of two children, in 1,99 children by woman.

In spite of this very light bending, France continues to be among the champions of Europe the fertility.

The old persons represent 21,8 % of the French population and consume more than 40 % of medicines.

There is in France between 8 000 and 10 000 old people's homes:

- 60 % in the public sector

- 20 % in the private sector

- 20 % in the associative sector

The pension plan in France decomposes into 2 big regimes:

- The regime by distribution, based on the compulsory contributions paid by active persons, which governs the basic pensions and the supplementary pensions.

- The regime by capitalization adopted for the additional pensions.
