Where have all the councillors gone? There were not enough councillors for a

quorum at Marlborough’s Amenities and Open Spaces Committee this Monday. Instead, Chair Cllr Rich Pitts invited councillors to talk informally about items on the agenda.

Cllr Graham Francis presented some options for a bus shelter on the south side of the High Street, which would

OPEN SPACES AT COMMITTEE MEETINGoffer seating as well as protection from rain and vehicle splashes, whilst not obstructing pedestrian access along the pavement. Councillors will discuss style and cost at the next meeting.

Cllr Val Compton described the proposed route for a foot/cycle path, linking Five Stiles Road with the Salisbury Road Business Park. This would enable residents in the east of the town to have a safer route to the dentist, Tesco supermarket and other businesses on the park. There are many things to consider, not least, who owns the land and where to go for funding. The Town Council will work with Transition Marlborough and other interested parties to move this forward.

Charlotte Hitchmough, of Action for the River Kennet (ARK), outlined plans for restoring the river habitat of the River Og. This would include planting trees and re-profiling the river bank, to re-introduce meanders that had been straightened out in the past. She hoped that ARK would start work in the summer and that the public would have better access to the river when it is completed.

Cllr Bryan Castle gave an update on plans to erect the old town mill machinery, as an historic monument, beside the river, adjacent to the site of the mill. - Shirley Pryor

their services and wares. The Advisers are a commercial family venture

offering promotional space at a price. The Adviser family works very hard to help

your businesses and services and believes that in most cases service is successful.

In the case of charities, we offer space at a 50% discount, bearing half the cost ourselves.

We welcome input and comment on our services and regret that we are unable to provide free space other than for exceptional circumstances.

For promotional space enquiries you are invited to contact [email protected] Tel. 01488 682328.

The Hungerford Bookshop has been regionally shortlisted for ‘Best Independent Bookshop of the Year’ as part of the Bookseller Industry Awards. The shop, which won the

award in 2009 and was shortlisted in 2010, is up against four other shops in the region. The judges look for engagement within the local comunity, excellent customer service, good range of stock and sustainability. The winner will be announced in May.

LOCAL BOOKSHOP SHORTLISTED AGAIN!

Hungerford Town Council’s recreation and amenities committee will instigate a special working committee to deal with financial aspects of the Triangle Field’s

upgraded sports pavilion. The council on Monday was told the work could cost up to

£100,000. This was a shock to councillors who originally budgested for around £15,000. Users of the field will be invited to join the committee and help to raise funds for the project.

Retirement from Public Life

MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY

Retirement from public life is a strange phenomenon, especially when it comes after a long period of high exposure and a pretty reasonable measure

of success. The reception given to me by Constable Greg Furr and

my former fellow trustees recently was a superb occasion. Of course I would have liked far more people than the 70+ who attended but they were all representative of friendship and the very many organisations I had been involved with since 1948. Health and safety dictated the limit. I was inevitably very much dominated by elderly members of the Hungerford community, but my early history in the town is entirely dominated by sporting involvement firstly by my first love of cricket and after 5 years, promotion to captain. This led to Hungerford’s first post-war win at Littlecote and added to the win was a six hit off Bernard Nicholas.

There were great players from Hungerford and I was well supported by Albert Cummins, Harry Tilly, Don Richards, Bill Cook, Harry Pounds, George Eatwell, Roger Beard, Bill Ralph and many others mostly older than me but all giving me maximum support.

My football was also enjoyable....to be continued.

Adviser Citizen of The Century, former mayor and longtime server of Hungerford and its people, Jack Williams begins a series of articles for the Adviser on his life and memories in an incredible journey.

Hungerford Town Councillor Terry Harding left on Wednesday for a charity climb to the Mount Everest Base Camp.

Hungerford’s mayor, Cr Martin Crane at Monday’s council meeting, wished Terry good luck and a safe return.

GOOD LUCK WISH FOR EVEREST CLIMBER

Once upon a long time ago I took Terry Wogan to the Arc de Triomphe race-meeting at Longchamp.

It was not profitable but made an entertaining occasion with a rich luncheon at the French Jockey Club Table.

You may ask why I am writing about “A Source of Knowledge” so I’ll tell you.

While Terry and I sat drinking fine wine in the visitors’ box overlooking the paddock, he used the word atmosphere to describe the scene covering the racecourse, with thoroughbred horses and exquisitely dressed spectators.

So I asked him to define the word atmosphere, which he did and went on to explain that he has a real interest in languages and words which promote them, so he makes time to read pages from the dictionary, and visits libraries to improve his knowledge and word-power-thus seeking knowledge from the source. And I try to follow his example.

And whenever I go to Hungerford Library I observe visitors are made welcome by friendly professional staff members offering guidance and help. The activities are all free, starting with a wide-ranging selection of books by authors of fiction and professional subjects, and a display of newspapres and magazines. Every Wednesday in term-time there is a Rhymetime session at 11.00 for children up to 4 years old.

Other activities are run during school holidays such as the Summmer Reading Challenge. There are free activities for adults; weekly craft and chat sessions and guest speakers. Help is also available from volunteer instructors on computers, on a free 6 weeks’ course.

We hear about libraries being closed, but we are well served by ours, and cannot lose use of it. Let’s give it full support taking advantage of the wide coverage of interests it provides for Hungerford and its surrounding areas.

A SOURCE OF kNOWLEDGEby John Cameron Hayes

Hungerford education is expected to receive a boost when a special task force reports on the future of education in the town.

District Councillor David Holtby told Hungerford Town Councillors before their meeting on Monday it was hoped to secure proper funding for Hungerford’s John O’Gaunt School and other town schools.

It was also hoped to improve structure of the John O’Gaunt 6th Form.

The matter was to be discussed in detail with Hungerford’s mayor, Cr Martin Crane on Wednesday.

In the agenda announced on Monday, the mayor, Cr Martin Crane will extend a welcome followed by a keynote

IMPORTANT ISSUES FOR TOWN

It’s not always the case, but Adviser advertisers do have to pull their advertising out because of excessive work gained through The Adviser.

One such advertiser this week pulled out for the second time. The first was from excessive line classified resulte and the latest from LOOK WHAT HUNGERFORD HAS TO OFFER.

600 SIGN FOR ELECTRIFICATION600 signatures had already been collected in favour of electrification of the Hungerford Railway line, Cr Alana Wilson told the last Hungerford Town Council meeting. The petition may be viewed and signed at HungerfordTown Council office.

POTHOLE PROBLEM IN HUNGERFORDCr Roger Thompson has drawn Hungerford Town Council’s attention to extensive potholes in the town, brought about in severe weather.

LIST OF TOWN WALKS SOUGHTHungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee is seeking suggested walks in and around Hungerford for submission to the town’s new tourism and development group. The mayor, Cr Martin Crane told the last committee meeting there was a need to tell people how they can get around and enjoy the town better.

A war has been declared on non-native invasive species! You may not even have realised that we are being invaded. Such is the devious nature of our enemy. Help is at hand with Avon’s Army of Volunteers, but we still need more brave souls ready to fight the scourge of invasive species on our river.

This dedicated, if disparate, group gathered its troops recently at Salisbury’s Guildhall to draw up their battle plans. Avon’s Army of Volunteers includes representatives from parish councils, landowners, charities such as Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts and even a representative from Bristol Zoo.

This project funded by the Environment Agency as part of their commitment to restore rivers, both physically and for water quality.

Leading the attack, Sam Stork, of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Source to Sea project said “Over the past months, local landowners have been helping us to reconnoitre, gather intel, and generally spy on our enemy, the invasive species. And now that we know who they are, and how many there are, we are ready to take the fight to them. We will fight them in the river. We will fight them on the river banks. We will not rest until the River Avon is cleared of non-native species again. This is our finest year. 2013 will go

down in history as the year that Britons helped their wildlife fight back.”

That intel – collected over 300km of the river - resulted in over 2000 records of harmful, non-native species currently invading our stunning river. It must be stopped before our wildlife suffers irreparable damage. That’s why Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts are asking you to volunteer. Help us to fight these invaders. Come out and work along our river, its tributaries, chalk streams and waterways. Be part of our Avon’s Army of Volunteers and turn back the tide of the invaders. They do not fight with guns, but with sweat, with gloved hands and waders on their legs.

So far, 65 brave souls have stepped forward, representing parish and city councils, landowners, anglers, government bodies such as Natural England and the Environment Agency, the business community and ordinary people who care about the River Avon.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Sam Stork ended saying “This is our last chance. We either fight for the Avon or we lose part of our natural heritage that is currently struggling to survive. Like any good Army, we have a solid plan of action. What we need now are the troops, the volunteers to come out and help us fight.” -Kelly Barnett
