The Fellowship of Christian Athletes launched an Evangelism project at Gulfport High School this month. FCA students received donations of hundreds of Post-It pads, so they could initiate their project, which involves writing Bible scriptures and verses or motivating notes to other students, teachers, and staff members. FCA members have placed these notes on students’ desks and other random locations to help inspire, uplift, and encourage those who find and read the notes. As a result, students who are not members of FCA have joined their efforts by writing and sharing their own notes with others on our campus. Many students have shared that by receiving a Post-It message, their days have been brighter at GHS.

GHS’s Future Educators of America organization (FEA) is participating in the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF program, which began in 1950 as a way to help children in the world who need much more than candy. The FEA members will go door-to-door on Halloween with UNICEF collection boxes. For $1.00, your donation could give a child 40 days of clean, safe water. For $5.00, your donation could feed a malnourished child for five days. For $10.00, your donation could vaccinate 280 children. Every donation matters! Please help support our Future Educators of America’s students with this wonderful initiative to make a positive difference in the life of a child.

Senior parents were treated to our Senior Parent Night held on Thursday, September 25th, at GHS. Our counselors shared valuable financial aid and scholarship information, as well as discussed the process for college admissions. If parents were unable to attend, they may contact Mrs. Zahedi, our lead counselor, to receive the information that was missed.

Last week Teacher Academy students warmly welcomed guest speaker Dr. Tracy Daniel, Director of Technology for the Gulfport School District, who taught them about avoiding unethical practices by abiding by the Mississippi Educator Code of Ethics/Standards of Conduct, guarding their professional image on social media, following the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), and implementing the ISTE Standards for Teachers. Mrs. Whittet’s Teacher Academy students actively discussed these interesting topics with Dr. Daniel and were very engaged in hearing Dr. Daniel share examples of each topic that affected their lives on a daily basis at home and during the school day.

Because choosing a college is one of the most difficult decisions that seniors will make in high school, our counselors plan for annual visits from college recruiters. This past week college recruiters from LSU, MSU, Mississippi College, and Millsaps visited and spoke to groups of seniors at Gulfport High School. When choosing a college, seniors should consider the type of academic program and the availability of the major or majors in which they are most interested, along with other important factors. Seniors should also think about the following factors when comparing colleges:

*Location (distance from home)

*Environment (type of school, two-year or four

year, urban or rural school setting, location and size of nearest city, religious affiliation, and co-ed, male, or female environment)

*Size (physical size of campus)

*Admission requirements (deadlines, tests

required, average test scores, GPA, rank, and special requirements)

*Academics (majors offered, special

requirements, accreditation, student-faculty ratio, and typical class size)

*College expenses (tuition, room and board,

estimated total budget, application fee, and deposits)

*Financial aid (deadlines, required forms,

percent of student population receiving financial aid, scholarships, and part-time employment opportunities for students)

*Housing (residence hall requirements,

availability of housing, types and sizes of residential areas, and food plans)

*Facilities (academic and recreational facilities)

*Activities (clubs, organizations,

sororities/fraternities, and athletic intramural activities)

STUDENTS GATHER IN PRAYER IN HONOR OF ANNUAL EVENT

“See You at the Pole” is an annual event recognized and celebrated throughout the nation and at Gulfport High School. Members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, along with many other students, gathered in prayer to celebrate this event last week and to demonstrate the power of prayer. This annual student-initiated and student-led event brought students to our flagpole to pray for their leaders, school, and families, as well to ask God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campus and country. Simultaneously, across the nation at countless schools around the country, thousands of students were doing the very same thing.
