The adhesion of Turkey to the EU

Introduction

The presentation that you’re about to see is made for geography as an extra assignent. The subject of our presentation had to be Turkey, the EU and democracy. Besides the parents of each member that we’ve interviewd, we’ve also had to interview other students. The students that we’ve chosen are: Annemarijn Alons & Laura Praamstra G4c and Rachel Ho G4F. We hope you’ll enjoy our

presentation.

may join the EU?• Turkey has a lot of work to do before they may join the EU, for example they

have to acknowledge the Kurdisch language and they have to make a economical growth. Wouldn’t it be better if Turkey just waited for a couple of years in order to adhere to the EU?

• Explain your answer from the previous question.• What do you think that Turkey has to change, if you look at the democracy, in

order to adhere to the EU?

The answers• What does Turkey add to the EU?• Annemarijn: I think that Turkey doesn’t add anything to the EU. The whole culture

is different and the culture doesn’t fit in the cultures of the other European countries.

• Laura: Turkey adds a complete new culture to the EU.• Rachel: Turkey will add their thoughts to the EU. They

can help the other countries by sharing some solutions for problems.

• Mother Patty: Nothing. Because it’s a poor country.Father Patty: A bigger, stronger Europe

• Mother Denise: It adds a new culture, with different people and different thoughts were we can learns things from.Father Denise: A new culture, the Turkish culture which is based on the Islam.

• Mother Laurens: Nothing really. Their economy is bad and if they join a lot of people are going to immigrate to the western countries, trying to find their luck. The Netherlands pays a lot to the European Union and then the money goes to turkey as well. I think we should had keep the 15 countries

• What are, according to you, the advantages if Turkije would join the EU?

• Annemarijn: I think that there would be no advantages at all.• Laura: We learn how to go about with that culture, I think it will decrease the

discrimination. • Rachel: There will be more an unit, that means not

having to exclude countries from joining the EU.For Turkey it would be easier to get work at other countries. And the business between Turkey and the other countries would improve.

• Mother Patty: That the holidays would be cheaper.• Father Patty: The EU will get bigger and stronger.• Mother Denise: Also it could be an entrance to the Eastern World, it

could make us better friends with them.• Father Denise: With one country more we’ll stand stronger

together as an economic power. • Mother Laurens: Europe is getting bigger and maybe in a couple of years the

would add something. But is the first few year they only cost us money instead of giving advantage. Only advantage is that it will be cheaper to buy from them

• What are, according to you, the disadvantages if Turkey would join the EU?

• Annemarijn: It will cost us a lot of money, because Turkey is not a rich country. We must even pay more money.

• Laura: Like I said, the culture is complete different. I think it will be hard to live with these two cultures. I guess there will be lots of arguments between Turkey and the EU.

• Rachel: Turkey wouldn’t have to make a large contribution to the EU,• and would get more subsidy back, unlike the other wealthier countries, such as

France, Spain and the Netherlands.• Mother Patty: We have to pay for yet an other country.• Vader Patty: At the short time, it will take extra money.• Mother Denise: There’s no freedom of press in Turkey and also the government

has way to many power over the people and everything in the country. • Vader Denise: It’s also an economical weak country, and that’s

never good for the EU.• Mother Laurens: They cost us a lot of money, without

returning a big advantage

• What counts the most for you? The negative or positive sides of the adhesion of Turkey?

• Annemarijn: The negative sides.• Laura: The negative sides. • Rachel: The positive sides of the

adhesion of Turkey counts the most for me.• Mother Patty: The negative sides. • Father Patty: The positive sides• Mother Denise: The negative sides• Father Denise: The negative sides• Mother Laurens: The negative sides

• Do you want a referendum about the adhesion of Turkey? Or do you think that this is a decision of the politicians?

• Annemarijn: I think that there must be a referendum about the adhesion of Turkey.

• Laura: I want a referendum.• Rachel: I think it’s best if both sides would vote.• Mother Patty: I would like a referendum, but I think the outcome would probably

be the same.• Father Patty: This is a decision of the politicians• Mother Denise: There are other things that are more important to have a

referendum about.• Father Denise: I think that it’s important that the people stand behind the

decisions of the EU and the only way to get this is by a referendum • Mother Laurens: I think it a decision for the politicians. Ordinary people haven’t

got a clue about these subjects and politicians have, so it would be wise to leave these important matters to the politicians.

• Explain your answer from the previous question. • Annemarijn: We live in a democracy and a referendum fits in a democracy. The

citizens must decide if Turkey can join the EU. Because the citizens have to pay for it.

• Laura: I think it’s fair to vote about it.• Rachel: If you knew how everyone feels about the adhesion of Turkey,• it would be much easier/more fair to decide if they should be in the EU or not.• I don’t think it’s fair just letting one group of people decide whether they may be

in the EU or may not.• Mother Patty: I like to have a say who joins the EU.• Father Patty: More Know how• Mother Denise: Yes I think so.• Father Denise: Yes.• Mother Laurens: I think it a decision for the

politicians. Ordinary people haven’t got a clueabout these subjects and politicians have, so it would be wise to leave these important matters to the politicians.

• Do you think that the Turkish people have to pay the same amount of money to the EU as we do?

• Annemarijn: Yes.• Laura: No.• Rachel: Actually it is fair to let everyone pay the same amount of money.• Mother Patty: Yes.• Father Patty: Yes• Mother Denise: It should be the

same as everybody does, because that’s the most fair. It wouldn’t be fair to let them pay more, and even less fair if they have to pay less.

• Father Denise: Yes.• Mother Laurens: That doesn’t matter. The Netherlands are paying the most of

every country to the European Union. The Turkish government wouldn’t even join the EU if they had to pay that much money.

• Or should this be more or less? Please explain why.• Annemarijn: It must be the same, because in the EU we have all the same rights,

so we must also the same amount of money. The richer countries and his citizens must also work hard for their money, even like the Turkey people.

• Laura: I think they have to pay more, because it’s a bigger country then Holland. • Rachel: But if you look at the circumstances in a country,

it’s not always the best thing to let everyone pay the same cash.You should let the countries that are struggling pay less amount of money. Because the people here are wealthy, they are able to give more away. But as Turkey is less wealthy, they shouldn’t be giving more away.

• Mother Patty: No, the same would be just fine. It wouldn’t be fair to let them pay more then we do.

• Father Patty: No, the same• Mother Denise: It should be the same as everybody does, because that’s the most

fair. • Father Denise: It wouldn’t be fair to let them pay more, and even less fair if they

have to pay less.• Mother Laurens: If Turkey joins the EU they are getting paid instead of they have

to pay.

• Should that be any changes if you look at the caution of Turkije before they may join the EU?

• Annemarijn: I think that the whole culture has to change, like same rights for men and women, because than is it equal to the rest of the EU.

• Laura: Yes, I think they should forbid the vendetta. • Rachel: Sorry, I don’t get the question.• Mother Patty: Yes, more rights for women's.• Father Patty: Human rights.• Mother Denise: The jurisdiction in Turkey should change in the way that it is in the

European country’s. Father Denise: They’re not totally independent of the government.

• Mother Laurens: A lot of changes have to be made. First of all they should agree with our terms of Human rights. They also should have a better and stable economy. I think those two are the most important changes they should made.

• Turkey has a lot of work to do before they may join the EU, for example they have to acknowledge the Kurdisch language and they have to make a economical growth. Wouldn’t it be better if Turkey just waited for a couple of years in order to adhere to the EU?

• Annemarijn: Yes.• Laura: Yes. • Rachel: No, I don’t think so. • Mother Patty: Yes.• Father Patty: Yes .• Mother Denise: Yes.• Father Denise: Yes.• Mother Laurens: Yes, but I don’t think they will ever acknowledge the Kurdish

language and another critical points like that. So maybe in 20 years they should reconsider.

• Explain your answer from the previous question.• Annemarijn: As I said, the culture must become more West orientated first, then

there will be a possibility that Turkey can join the EU.• Laura: I think it’s better when they show us first that they can change that, and

than adhere to the EU.• Rachel: Because there are issues in their country, you shouldn’t exclude them. I

think it’s better that Turkey joins the EU now• Mother Patty: Then Turkey is a more equal partner for the EU.• Father Patty: It takes time.• Mother Denise: It’s going to cost a lot of time to make the changes that we want

them to make• Father Denise: it would be better if they waited several years and then try again.

Cause they’re not ready. • Mother Laurens: Yes, but I don’t think they will ever acknowledge the Kurdish

language and another critical points like that. So maybe in 20 years they should reconsider.

• What do you think that Turkey has to change, if you look at the democracy, in order to adhere to the EU?

• Annemarijn: Men and women must have the same rights. And there must be free elections for everyone.

• Laura: I think they have to introduce a complete freedom of the press and freedom of speech.

• Rachel: So we can help them with their problemsLike the economical growth. If they joined the EU,it would be much easier to negotiate business with other countries. It would be a real advantage. You can’t let another country solve it in their own.

• Mother Patty: They have to change the amount • of freedom for the press and the people.• Father Patty: Human rights• Mother Denise: I totally agree with my husband.• Father Denise: There should be more freedom of press, and the same rights for

man and wife. Also less influence of the government. • Mother Laurens: Human rights and their point of view against woman.

Our own opinion

• Patty: I think that it is a good idea to let Turkey join the EU, it’s another country and more country’s can make us stronger and help each other more and more.

• Denise: I don’t think it’s such a good idea to let Turkey join the EU, Turkey has to change a lot of things before they may join. So let them do that first and then in a couple of years we’ll see what’s going to happen.

• Laurens: I agree with Denise. I think that Turkey has an unstable economy to join the EU, it has nothing to offer the EU, it would only make us less wealthy and welfare
