“We are going to create a theatre that has a universal lan-guage. This is the language of the human heart …”

— One of the most remarkable actors of our time, Mi-chael Chekhov, predicted this about the theatre of the future. Today, we still so ardently and passionately seek for new means of theatrical expression. At Chekhov Theatre School in Melikhovo, we are marking the 125th anniversary of the greatest actor of the 20th century – Michael Chekhov.

Michael Chekhov (29 August 1891 – 30 September 1955) represented the theatre of the future – indepen-dent theatre – theatre where the creativity of the actor exists as a living organism. The actor of the Michael Chekhov technique is not just a performer, but also the creator of the theater. An actor can go beyond the play-wright or the play. The secret lies somewhere outside the theatre and life, somewhere deep in the performer’s imagination. It is the stage’s ineffable, magical elements that truly bring the actor and audience together: the field of energy or vitality that radiates from the actor’s creative work, an actor’s profound and startling char-acter choices, the kinesthetic sensation of perfectly

executed corporal movements and sounds – all create a powerful atmosphere, the pure atmosphere of the stage. It is theatre with a heart.

Our staff invites you to join us to celebrate a unique, ar-tistic work experience to discover and learn one of the most inspiring techniques within the Art of Acting – the technique of Michael Chekhov. During 2016, the Chekhov Theatre School invites the most innovative masters with-in the Art of Acting to share their skills and inspiration in our leading Master Courses, which take place in the most remarkable pearl of Russian theatre history — in Anton Chekhov’s village of Melikhovo.

We firmly believe that our masters of acting craft at Chekhov Theatre School will present to you and give you “the keys to the magic of theater,” as Michael Chekhov also strived to give to all his actors. Now it is time — to work, to share and to inspire! Let us gather together to celebrate, learn, develop, uncover, nurture, and create!
