2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Kapunda’s twilight run this year comprised of the opening of Mick and Trish new shed on their farm at Tarlee. It was a perfect night; fantastic views from the top of the hill and Mick provided his own homegrown meat for their barbecue. Thank you for your hospitality. As usual, February meeting was well attended at Goode’s Workshop. It reminded me of an open-air cinema, everyone sitting around on chairs under the star, it was an interesting night Mayor Allan Aughey told of the history of bikes and tricycles throughout the years and the social break through when bikes replaced horses, which had to be looked after and fed. He also displayed some interesting items including a portable gramophone player. Brian Beyer dressed for the occasion, wearing a William Tyler tee shirt and showed an interesting presentation on the restoration of his Adelaide built tricycle. Other interesting displays of bikes and engines and information on their history, were presented by Graham Burgess, David Dunstan, Ferg Mahon, Dean Manderson and Glenn Waldhuter, which I am sure everyone enjoyed. Thank you all for your efforts. At the March meeting Peter Eaton told members of his trip to China and the problems encountered getting his “Whippet” through customs. He showed many photos of the trip from Beijing to Shanghai and many of the cars competing from various countries. Thank you, Peter. March Swap Meet went well, I wish to sincerely thank the Committee and all Members who worked so hard on the weekend to again make this event such a success, you all did a great job. Luckily the weather was not too hot so plenty of people filled the oval. Thank you to all the Ladies who supplied the cakes, they went well with the tea and coffee. You will have received, by e-mail or with this Con Rod, some specific information regarding Conditional/Historic Registration. It has been presented as one page so it can be kept with your Log Books. Some members seem confused with some recent new rulings so I hope this information will help you understand your requirements. “Code of Practice” can be downloaded from the Internet - www.dpti.sa.gov.au – code of practice historic vehicles. Please remember to contact Pat Fiedler if you intend going to Peterborough for the Long Weekend Camp out in June.

CHAPTER CHATTER by DALE PALAMOUNTAIN

As I begin to write (today is the Con-Rod deadline) it occurs to me that last minute jobs are harder and time wise a terribly inefficient way to operate. Last month only the paragraph on the second page left the computer and there was no time left to remedy that. The February BBQ in Mick and Trish’s new shed was an eye opener and the shed is not finished yet. There is a hoist waiting installation and a carport area waiting for some rubble filling. On arrival we all had a driving test between two sheds to the parking lot. If you ignored two pairs of arms waving furiously on the approach it got interesting, the right rear wheel missing the ramp, the rear of the car went to the left, held by a kerb and the front steering having no effect on what the rear should do. I do believe the owner of

the only Jaguar present had this problem and all other drivers passed the test. With tables all laid out, the meat pre-cooked, we were ready for a feast. All our ladies did well supplying a variety of salads. On display was a Malcolm Johncock built wheeling machine – quite large throat, “strong as……” excellent finish and assorted wheels. Sadly Malcolm was not there to demonstrate it in action, but we watched a DVD on how to.

Moranne and the wheeling machine

6 It was pleasing that Moranne could join us for the event on a very mild and pleasant night to be out and a view to some of the Yorke Peninsula from the hill just east of Tarlee. Brian Haines managed a fall in a very dignified manner, but went home a little early to be sure he was fit for his next day’s activity. A special thank you to all who worked on preparation and clean up. It was pleasing that the Chapter managed to man the Swap meet gate duties despite many of the regular crew not being available. Dianne and I had No. 2 son and family visiting from Brunei, staying at Victor Harbor. No 1 son had his Moranne Coombs, Brian & Deanna Haines 40th party there, not knowing his brother would be and Terry Wade attending. (We hope this is a valid reason for not attending the Swap.)

Peter Cottam, a visitor and Mick Raelene and Tony Leis and Irene Woodcock

It has been good to catch up with NARC members from beyond Kapunda this year, including Brian and Eleanor, Moranne and Robert Parker. Reports from Chapter people on the February display night at Clare were full of praise and obviously a successful night. There is a definite benefit in having the numbers to make such events viable. A recent Chapter run to Mt. Pleasant for a hotel meal was a smaller than average attendance (15) but a good drive and meal. Our numbers were down one more by Ross missing our departure from “Bowsers” at Nuriootpa and not getting to the hotel despite

Some equipment lying around Brian Haines back tracking to find him. My apologies Ross, I can only hope you enjoyed the antiques. Please note the May weekend at Wallaroo requires you to make your accommodation booking. Refer to the Chapter calendar for all events. Malcolm is making good progress and setting his date for leaving Hampstead Centre. We all wish him well and hope he achieves his goal. It will be four and a half months, but a credit to him and his determination.

7 SUB EDITOR’s EDITORIAL – ROAD TOLL

So here we go again – tragedies over Easter and what is the first thing the powers that control our lives on the road (as far as they are able) come up with? Let’s lower the speed limits somewhere &/or increase the fines &/or double demerit points (or, even better, all three) – that’ll fix it! When are they going to get the message that it doesn’t work. After a similar action last year I made a private wager that I’d “bite my tongue” if the supposed desired effect was realised. And of course it wasn’t – the road toll was up again. You cannot legislate against stupidity and many accidents are simply the result of people doing things that the speed limit in the area would have had no effect on whatsoever (no seat belts, drag racing, out-of-control “burn-outs”, concentration wander whilst texting, talking on the phone etc.,etc.). Why should we, the country people in particular, be penalised en masse for the actions of a few (for that’s what will most certainly happen). I will be interested to know to what extent the Government “coffers” have swelled say 12 months after yet another Draconian law has been introduced in our “Nanny” state as we country drivers get “pinched” cruising along @ 108kph or similar. Make no mistake it means more time spent checking the speedo, more time on the road and all because the so-called “Road Safety Experts” can think of nothing as obvious to me as more money and time spent on teaching defensive-driving techniques in schools before youngsters get their licences! I was lucky enough to have such a teacher from when I was 10 years old (my Dad) and have been driving since then without touching another vehicle (touch wood and thanks to “Lady Luck” in part of course), but the basics to avoid accidents were thoroughly instilled very early. I know, let’s make it 80ks statewide, surely that’ll do it and really help the State’s financial woes. You know I wouldn’t even mind so much being harassed to the extent we now are if the resultant fines went solely to improving road surfaces and driver education, but at the risk of sounding like a grumpy old cynic, somehow I don’t think it is! No, sadly there’s nothing immediate that can be done to save some of the “clowns” already using our roads, (we can only hope they don’t take anyone out with them) but much can be done to save tomorrow’s drivers – DEFENSIVE DRIVING TECHNIQUES are the answer. RRTJ Sub-Editor All American Day Sunday 17th February I arrived at Tilley Reserve at Surrey Downs about 9.45. There were quite a few cars there when I arrived. It was a very hot day with no breeze at all and the temperature was about 39 degrees later in the day. The hot weather kept a lot of the older cars away and I didn’t get many photos this year but those that I did take I liked. I took photos of 3 Buicks, (a convertible and 2 sedans -1937 and a 1938), 2 Whippets, a 1926 tourer and an unrestored 1927 roadster, a very rare 1929 Hudson roadster, a 1960 Desoto (very rare car), a 1957 Chrysler Saratoga, a 1927 Essex roadster and a 1937 Oldsmobile 1927 Whippet similar to the one I used to own.

Page 9: The ‘CON-ROD’ · 2013-04-06 · NARC was formed in 1974 to encourage the regular use, restoration and preser vation of veteran , vintage and classic motor vehicles, tractors and

8 I had a look inside the building and looked at some of Beven Young’s car books but I didn’t buy any. I saw Robert Cunningham from Port Pirie inside the building and I had a chat to him. I also met 2 Oldsmobile club members who I knew from when I was in the club. I had some lunch and walked around for a while and spoke to a few people I knew and left about 2.30. There were only about 300 to 400 cars there this year because of the heat and only about 20 that were vintage or classic.

1960 DeSoto Leon Darley FELLOW MEMBERS On Thursday 7thMarch at about 9.30 a.m. we drove to the Kingston Road Deli to post mail. Whilst there we collected a ‘Flinders News’ and in it read ‘Auction of Household Goods & Chattels’ at Jamestown starting at 10.30 a.m. that day. We had purchased a late model Mercedes Wagon and were dying to drive it and try it out somewhere. Still suffering from recent hand surgery we took a quick trip out for the day to Jamestown. We had to park the car around the corner and across the road, as there were heaps of cars in the street. The auction had already commenced when we arrived so we took a quick look at the display before any bidding. It was like a huge Lions Auction very varied and all spread out over the back yard. There were about 50 – 60 people participating in it. The house was situated on a large block with a 6’6” high iron fence down the side. Everything was very cheap and they were bundling goods and boxes together to get up to $5.00 bids. So whilst we agreed we needed NOTHING else to fill up our garages we got caught up in the hype and went mad. So there we were stacking all our purchases by the side fence 6’6” high under a tree, sort of out of sight. Towards the end of the auction my partner reached up and handed me boxes up over the fence. We could not see each other as we did this only seeing the boxes on the top of the fence. As I am old and not so pliable I noticed a 1 tonne twin cab tray top along side of me. It was my intention to put the goods in the empty vehicle and then transfer them across the road and pack neatly in the wagon, which I proceeded to do so. During this transfer I noted that the buyers were moving from the back of the house to the front where I had my eye on a new TV, which I did not need but had to have. I left the transfer of goods, leaving vital purchases like Electric Sander, Jig Saw and ripper boxes of bolts and sundries plus several boxes stacked with kids’ puzzles, in someone’s tray top ute. However, the folks outbid me on the TV so I returned to the “Claytons” Transfer Station and noticed the vacant space on the side of the road. It did not click. We headed home and then started to unload. I said to my partner “Where did you put the other gear we bought?” She replied “I don’t know, I only handed them to you over the fence”. It clicked. I left them in someone’s tray top that had driven off, obviously unaware of the cargo. We are NARC members too embarrassed to own up. ……….NO NAME………

9 MILDURA BIENNIAL RALLY EASTER 2013

This is always a great rally, with friendly, hospitable people, well-planned activities and good catering; this year’s was good even by Mildura standards. I drove my 1959 Borgward Isabella TS there, a special attraction being that one of their very active members, Graham Rich, still drives the Isabella Combi he bought new in May 1959. It’s not often that there are two Borgwards in the one rally. A special treat was a drive to a horse stud with beautiful grounds on the banks of the Darling River for Sunday’s lunch. My total distance was 750 miles (1207 km), getting 9.4 l/100 km. driving at 100-110 km/hr, Isabella behaved perfectly and was delighted to visit her sister. Marius Venz

10 Choosing a new car – 1955

My wife and I are now in a good situation. We really had to scrimp and save to pay the deposit on our new house, but now that my income has increased, the monthly payments aren’t a trial. Clementine, our 1935 Terraplane, is starting to need major work, which means it will be a better

option to buy a new car. Last week my wife overheard someone saying, “Here come Al and Viv in their old bomb,” which has made her especially keen to get a new car as soon as possible. Now we have the task of choosing which model we want to buy. We don’t want a baby car. They may be fine for city drivers, but we are in a country town and often do long trips. I wouldn’t want to move to the city – they’re getting traffic lights and parking meters down there, so that driving will cease to be fun. Some would say that our obvious choice is a Holden. It’s a six-cylinder car at a price we can afford and it has good resale value. However, I enjoy driving and I don’t want to condemn myself to a three-speed gearbox with an

unsynchronised first gear, quite apart from the fact that the Holden’s reputation for twitchy handling and poor brakes hasn’t come from nowhere. Furthermore, we do a lot of long distance driving (Vivienne’s family lives in New South Wales) and there are plenty of cars more economical than the Holden.

I rather like the Hillman, but Vivienne (I never call her Viv!) says it looks squashed-up and short. The Austin and Morris are quite nice cars, but for my taste, their styling has something of a homespun look about it. The same firm makes the MG Magnette, a lovely looking car, which is a delight to drive. What a shame it costs so much more! In the same price bracket is the Vanguard, a good solid car, but looking rather ill-proportioned on its too-short wheelbase. The Singer, with its overhead cam motor and four-speed box, is a car I’d seriously consider. Some people say that it looks too narrow, but I quite like it.

Page 12: The ‘CON-ROD’ · 2013-04-06 · NARC was formed in 1974 to encourage the regular use, restoration and preser vation of veteran , vintage and classic motor vehicles, tractors and

11 The Ford Zephyr and Consul are good cars and worth test-driving, even though their specification is somewhat unexciting. There are some rather interesting Continental cars. The Simca has a lot going for it: It is attractive and has excellent performance and economy. I only wonder if it would be big enough for our growing family. Shirley, our second child, starts school next year, Geoffrey is in grade two and young Craig is already at the crawling stage.

The Goliath is remarkably roomy, very economical and good-looking as well. I would be concerned about how it would go for service and parts out here in the country, where nobody has heard of fuel injection. The Peugeot has just about everything I would want, but Vivienne thinks that its interior is too spartan. The Fiat 1400 is well worth considering, being built to European standards and rather good-looking. Sometimes we fantasise about what we would buy if we could afford the upper price bracket. A lot of farmers around here have Chrysler products – Plymouths, Dodges or DeSotos. They’re dearer than their competition, but solid and reliable. The Chev has a good reputation, but the Customline, with its V8

motor, seems better value to me, quite apart from the fact that it is far more stylish. Our taste, however, is more in the direction of makes like Riley (what a lovely car!), Rover, Sunbeam-Talbot or Humber. If we were really rich, we might choose between an Alvis, an Armstrong-Siddeley, a Jaguar, a Mercedes Benz or a Bristol. Recently I read in a British magazine about a German car called the Borgward Isabella. It has four-wheel independent suspension, an all-synchronised four-speed gearbox and its performance, economy and handling are quite incredible. As if that’s not enough, its styling is just beautiful. It’s not cheap, but still far

below the luxury class. Unfortunately, import restrictions prevent them from being sold here, but if they were, I’d re-mortgage the house to get one! However, we must come back to earth. We’ll be going to the city soon, and we’ll be looking at all likely contenders and test-driving the ones we like best. I’m getting quite excited about our new car Marius Venz
