We thank Mrs Frost for running the competition in school.

Global Entrepreneurship Week

Once again we took advantage of the half term break to provide some opportunities for our students to travel and experience very different cultures. We were also pleased to receive a sizeable British Council grant to expand our computer science links and details of our new programme will follow shortly.

November is traditionally the month for remembrance and, as well our usual com-memoration, our History Society arranged an additional meeting to examine and dis-cuss the background to this month’s tragic events in Paris. We celebrated National

Parliament Week and continued with our usual huge array of enrichment activities.

This month also saw the first set of interim assessments sent home and they confirmed the excellent start students have made in the classroom this year. It is a pleasure to celebrate this success in the second half of this edition.

Our team for Charity 2015 has launched this year’s campaign in a series of assemblies and, as we move towards Christmas, we are all looking forward to this special time in our school calendar.

n Economics ConferenceOur AS students attended the Economics conference held at Saffron Walden High School. The group debated HS2, ‘Brexit’ and other current issues as well as joining in a game about international trading. The students all did extremely well and we thank Mrs Grainger for arranging it.

Parliament Weekn The theme of this year’s parliament week was ‘Change Makers’ and we marked it with a series of events including tutor group challenges, quizzes and a vote on the greatest Change Maker of modern times. In keeping with the theme, we were pleased to welcome Suffolk’s first Police and Crime Commissioner, Tim Passmore, to that week’s meeting of our Politics Society. Having explained his role, Mr Passmore took questions and was very impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm of all the students. We thank our Politics Captains, Tilly Dalglish and Toby Jeffery, together with Ms Rehahn for organising the week.

n Toby Jeffery in year thirteen, who is the Youth MP for Bury St Edmunds, had the huge privilege of being selected to be a main speaker at the annual UK Youth Parliament debate. Toby spoke from the Despatch Box to a packed House of Commons during the debate on mental health. In a confident performance, Toby raised the key points on this serious issue and was congratulated on how well he came across.

n Our students led by Ed Allan and Christy Williams, took part in a discussion on ‘Votes at 16’ on Mark Murphy’s programme on BBC Radio Suffolk and were praised on their poise, sensible arguments and mature debate. Well done.

St Edmund’s Dayn We congratulate Toby Jeffery and Holly Silcock who were presented with certificates as finalists for the borough’s Young Citizen of the Year. The event took place in The Athenaeum. Toby was rewarded for his work in the Youth Parlia-ment and Holly, in year ten, for all her work with young children at her local community centre.

n We thank and congratulate our jazz ensemble who entertained the Mayor and his guests at the St Edmund’s Day dinner in the Athenaeum.

n Christ the King Sunday also saw the Cathedral mark St Edmund and we took part in the Eucharist service. We are grateful to William Curwen, Head Boy and Emma Bradley, Deputy Head Girl, who read the lessons and to Christopher Hammond, Jonathan Hammond, Clare Hole and Ella Thomas from year nine who took up the offertory. All were congratulated by the clergy and several members of the congregation, especially for the quality of the readings.

We were delighted to receive the following from the Mayor’s Secretary:“Friday’s dinner was a huge success and the contribution of the County Upper School musicians simply made the evening. It was wonderful to listen to the band during dinner and their music was absolutely perfect. Jo Churchill MP got up to personally thank the band after the Mayor’s thanks. The Mayor will write a formal thank you letter but they were so exceptional, I wanted you to know straight away.”

Japan 2015Incredibly, this is the thirtieth year of our school’s Japanese Exchange Programme and the 2015 group took full advantage of this fantastic opportunity. They travelled right across Japan in a series of homestays which enabled them to experience the daily life, history and culture of such a different country whilst also visiting the well known sights. It provided an opportunity for the students to practise their Japanese and to meet up with the Japanese students they had previously hosted. All who took part were a real credit to our school and we congratulate them all, especially Skye Brook and Toby French who are this year’s Captain and Vice Captain respectively. We thank Mr Heaton for accompanying the party and especially Mrs Browning who organised this trip as part of her excellent leadership of our Japanese programme.

The Sports Tour to South AfricaOur second tour to South Africa was every bit as successful as the first. Alongside a fantastic cricketing experience, the group was very fortunate to spend time at a Game Lodge seeing buffalo, elephants, leopards, lions and rhinos, amongst a range of birds and animals. The visit to the Peninsula Coast incorporated a boat trip to see Cape fur seals and African penguins. Other highlights of this amazing opportunity included a visit to Johannesburg, Table Mountain and a township. Throughout the entire tour, the students were excellent ambassadors and a pleasure to be with. We thank Mr Bishop for organising the tour and Mr Marshall and Mr Golding for accompanying it.

Journeys old and newOur extensive journeys’ programme aims to provide a variety of opportunities to explore the world, to bring the cur-

riculum to life and to give our students an all-round education. Half term enabled very successful tours to Japan and South Africa to take place.

Creativity takes many formsEngineering Successn We congratulate our year ten and eleven students who were selected for the biennial engineering residen-tial run by The William and Ellen Vinten Trust and the Smallpeice Trust. We provided the largest group for this excellent three day experience. Students needed all their creative, scientific and mathematical skills for the challenges posed by Jaguar Land Rover and Thales. Working in mixed teams, we especially congratulate Ben Amroota and Thomas Whitwell who were in the winning team and Ben for winning the individual prize. Well done to all who took part and to Mr Randé for supporting them. We were also delighted to talk to former student Richard Clayton who was the guest speaker at the Gala Dinner and who now holds a senior engineering position with Schlumberger.

n Our Engineering Education team visited the Hawkins Forensics test site facility in Essex this month.

The centre trains people for forensic science and engi-neering work after fires have occurred and the group was able to see the application of science and wider skills in action. We thank Mr Willis for accompanying the group and Dr Fletcher for arranging it.

The Microscopy DayA group of year ten students were selected to attend a special Microscopy Day at the John Innes Science Centre in Norwich. It was run by the University of East Anglia and gave students a tremendous insight into how advanced microscopy has become as well as the opportunity to use the most modern microscopes. Harry Myhill wrote:

The Able and Talented Day

Our annual day for year seven students from all the town’s middle schools took place this month. The pupils worked in mixed teams to create a chain reaction involving all branches of science. The reaction began with a ball and ended by extinguishing a candle. All the groups really enjoyed the day and did extremely well. We thank our Captains of Science who helped to devise the day.

“On Wednesday 11th November, a group of year ten students visited the Norwich Research Centre to learn more about microscopy. This is a practice which is used to study objects in higher detail with extremely powerful micro-scopes so that researchers can investigate their subject matter in greater depth. We learned about the different kinds of microscope that they use to view the structure and form of an object and were even privileged enough to be able to see an image of an atom taken with an electron microscope. It was a great day out and we all thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience. Thank you to Dr Hanfrey and the kind microsco-pists who gave us their time to provide us with an insight into the practice of microscopy.”

The Design ExperienceOur sixth form product design students spent two days at half term exploring various facets of design. The first day was spent visiting museums in London exploring both industrial and artistic design. On the second day, the group was given a very special ‘behind the scenes’ introduction to a range of aspects of engineering which are needed to maintain the aircraft at Duxford. We thank Mr Gresham and Mr Taylor and congratulate all who took part.

Sixth form artists impressThis month our year thirteen art students had the first of their days in London doing their own creative research for their final portfolios.

Meanwhile, year twelve students had an inspiring day at The Sainsbury Centre. We thank the art department led by Mrs Larwood for arranging these opportunities and congratulate all the students who impressed the galleries as well as their teachers.

Female Mathematicians shine! In another example of creative approaches to problems, a team of girls from year ten through to year thirteen entered the UK Mathematics Trust’s Olympiad for Girls. We congratulate Aoife Doherty, Megan Manfield, Georgia Mills, Bryony Smith and, especially, Marion Denby, Florence Miller and Katy Rochford who achieved distinction.

Book ClubThis half term’s book was ‘The rest of us just live here’ by Patrick Ness. Students from across the school met in the library for cake and a robust discussion about the book including its creative merits. Well done to all who participated and to Mrs Stevens for organising it.

Moving Image AwardThe year’s awards are to be held at the British Film Institute and we were delighted to learn that one of last year’s media studies students has been selected for one of just three ‘special mentions’ nationally. Philippa Higgins’ music video, ‘Regina Spektor’ – All the Rowboats’ has been recognised in this way. Well done, Philippa.

The Rolls-Royce PrizeAll our work across the Trust was recognised at a special awards ceremony at the Science Museum this month. Our large scale, creative, year-long programme of events was rewarded with £6000. The project was the brain-child of Mrs Payne who dedicated hours and hours to a fantastic year. It was fitting that she collected our award on behalf of the team from the Trust and John Forbes from Treatt. The award was presented by Dr Sandy Magnus, Executive Director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics who gave a fascinating speech about her time in space.

The Language Perfect Awards We were delighted to take part in the new event for schools in the northern hemisphere. Students from across the year groups answered as many questions in the time that they could and we were delighted to be 3rd in Europe overall. We especially congratulate the following who took individual awards:

Elite: Bronwen ManselGold: Wilfred Harvey, Katie Miller, Harry Myhill and Lauren NicholsSilver: Florence Miller and Eddie WilkinsonBronze:Frederick Green and Pearl Liao

The GCSE Certificate PresentationWe were pleased to be joined by members of last year’s year eleven for the presentation of GCSE certificates. Governors, the sixth form tutor team and Ms Walters, who was the group’s Year Head throughout years nine to eleven, came together to celebrate all the individual and collective success of last summer. After music organised by Joshua Reeder, the year group was congratulated and certificates presented.

More service in the communityn We held our traditional remembrance assembly this month. Our Head students, William Curwen and Gabby Deora provided the readings and placed the wreath beneath our memorial before The Last Post. Their deputies Emma Bradley and Digby Hayden read the names of former students commemorated on our war memorial in a moving tribute. Gabby and Emma represented our school at the civic service on Armistice Day whilst the whole school observed the two minutes’ silence. Joshua Macrow in year eleven played The Last Post at several civic events as the Royal British Legion’s trumpeter.

n As a prelude to next month’s fundraising, tutor groups, assisted by the sixth form, filled shoeboxes for this year’s Shoebox Appeal. They were donated to the Samaritan’s Purse Appeal and all the boxes will go abroad in time for Christmas.

The Performing Arts Newsn We were very pleased to welcome the Wolsey Theatre Education team’s Sell a Door theatre compa-ny who ran a workshop for our year ten students who take GCSE Drama. Our weekly drama club for all year groups was treated to a workshop by David Whitney from the Theatre Royal’s education team.

n Following our successful performance of ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ at the Theatre Royal, we were delighted that the Shakespeare Schools Festival committee asked us to give another performance in Cambridge at the Mumford Theatre. St John’s College School, St Mary’s, The Perse, Linton Village College, Sawston Village Col-lege and the Cambridge International School also gave performances and our students enjoyed meeting other casts and performing in a new venue. The feedback was excellent, including, “your performance was so visually powerful and gripping; exhilarating, wonder-ful!” Well done to the whole cast and to Mrs Stevens for directing it.

n This month’s theatre visit was to Ipswich to see ‘The Silver Sword’ with a special pre-show workshop for the group. We thank Miss Lacey and Mr Kemp for accompanying the visit.

n We congratulate Clare Hole, Brennan Rolfe and Niamh Rooney who were selected to perform with a string quintet from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra this month.

n Once again our dancers enjoyed a huge amount of success at the annual Suffolk Dance Festival. All won awards and there were many successes across the Trust. Of particular note were the first places for Sarah Burns (ballet); Charlene Mould and Grace Stoten (15+ Modern Duet) Song and Dance group and Modern Group (both 15 years and over). Our dancers also took two cups: Sarah Burns, Sasha Campbell, Charlene Moulds, Grace Stoten and Emily Thomas won the Porselli Senior Modern Group while Charlene Moulds and Grace Stoten won the Zelma Rose Calver for the Senior duet. We congratulate all who took part and thank Mrs Stoten for all she does for dance.
