From the Chair-Wayne Whalen

Annual Report FY14Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation

In mid-November 1864, after a difficult summer and a fall election that at times seemed in great peril, President Abraham Lincoln began to prepare for his annual address to Congress. Thanks to the diary of Orville Hickman

Browning, we know the President was behind in his schedule, that as late as November 14th he had still not written a single word. He informed Browning that he “thought he would close doors tomorrow and go to work at it.”

In his Annual Message to Congress, delivered on December 6th, 1864, President Lincoln touched on the traditional topics such as

the nation’s foreign relations, the economy, and of course the progress of the Civil War. Yet he also looked optimistically to the future. He made mention of progress on the new trans-Atlantic cable that would connect Europe and the United States. The President spoke of our own efforts here in America to connect the west coast with the east through the advancement of the Union Pacific Railroad and the related telegraph. He also spoke of the new Department of Agriculture’s rapid advancements and how it was the “people’s department” because of the connection that citizens felt for it. The President offered an upbeat message, “Thus it is hoped that with the return of domestic peace the country will be able to resume with energy and advantage its former high career of commerce and civilization.”

It is with this same optimism that we here at the Foundation look to the future, for just as President Lincoln’s policies were affirmed by the voters in 1864, our friends and donors today continue to affirm the President’s legacy. As we approach the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s second election, we are excited about collaborating with the Chicago History Museum on our upcoming exhibit, “Undying Words: Lincoln 1858-1865.” This will explore the evolution of Lincoln’s thought through key speeches and documents, also highlighting some of the most important artifacts related to the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. And as we begin to look to even more anniversaries and celebrations in 2015 including the second inaugural address, the end of the Civil War, the assassination of President Lincoln and the burial in Springfield, Illinois, we would like as always to thank those individuals, families, foundations and corporations whose continuing support allows us to advance the legacy of our nation’s greatest President and to carry his legacy to the World.

Wayne Whalen

“... we here at the Foundation look to the future, for just as President Lincoln’s policies were affirmed by the voters in 1864, our friends and donors today continue to affirm the President’s legacy.”

Annual Report FY 14

I am pleased to report that the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation ended the Fiscal Year 2014 on sound financial footing. For the Fiscal Year we accomplished an increase in Net Worth of $362,764, while at the same time providing necessary support for the Library and Museum as well as a total net reduction in our Taper Collection obligation of $750,000.

Our important revenue sources remain donations from individuals, corporations and foundations, revenue from the Gift Store and Restaurant operations, memberships and special events such as the Lincoln Leadership Prize event. Additionally Fiscal Year 2014 showed a significant increase in the value of our investment assets.

FY 13 Gifts by Individuals & Organizations

Expenses related to the Taper Collection continue to be reduced with our constant efforts toward debt reduction. We are pleased that additionally we were able to provide direct financial support to the Library and Museum through grants and sponsorships.

Our asset base is very conservatively managed with a mandate to hold 70% of our assets in bonds and short term secure instruments and 30% in diversified equities. This mix has done well in producing consistent returns with a minimum of risk and volatility over the past several years. For Fiscal Year 2014 our investment program produced a $660,917 net addition to the asset base.

We do so appreciate the loyalty, trust, and support from our many members, donors, and supporters at all levels. Without you, we would be unable to provide the essential financial support to the Museum and Library.

4 Annual Report

Annual Report FY 14

2015 is a seminal year in the Lincoln world and the history of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM). It is the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, the end of the Civil War, the passage of

the 13th Amendment and sadly, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. It is also the 10th anniversary of the ALPLM. Yes, the Abraham Lin-coln Presidential Library and Museum are ten years old and the first decade has been extraordinary as more than three million people have visited and participated in the Lincoln experience.

If I could share one message, as we approach our 10th anniversary, it would be that the employees, board members, volunteers and generous benefactors care deeply about what happens to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Recently, the ALPLM was ranked the 19th best museum in the United States by TripAdvisor – the only presidential library and museum to make the list. The ALPLM is one of only two institutions in the nation to hold and showcase the “big three” documents – the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address and the 13th Amendment. It curates the world’s largest, most comprehensive collection of Lincolniana. And it is the destination to which people from 107 countries, including schoolchildren from across this nation, annually flock to learn about Lincoln.

Why does it rank up there with the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian and the Henry Ford museums among others? Because what you learn and experience once you walk through the doors of Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is nothing short of spectacular.

Financial support for this world-class institution is steady, strong and growing. Yes, it is growing, as new benefactors join our ranks every day. New memberships are at the highest levels since 2008, and our recent Lincoln Leadership Prize event was our most successful yet, exceeding all fundraising expectations. For this, we truly are grateful.

Why give to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum? Unlike the presidential libraries of most 20th- and 21st-century presidents, the ALPLM receives some state, but no federal, funding. Being less than a decade old, it doesn’t have generational giving. Also, unlike the libraries of modern-day presidents, its namesake is not alive and can’t walk into a room and make the case for why you should give to an institution bearing his name. It also doesn’t have Lincoln descendants to continue to care for and support their ancestor’s legacy.

What the ALPLM does have is Lincoln and you — you who understand that a gift to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation is a gift to Lincoln, our national heritage and our posterity. This Annual Report lists pages-upon-pages of generous benefactors like you, who have joined us on our ever-faithful journey to ensure that Lincoln’s legacy burns brighter than ever as a beacon of freedom, hope and equality for all the world to see. Thank you so very much for your generous, spirited giving.

Dr. Carla Knorowski

Our Generous DonorsPapers of Abraham Lincoln: The National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities continued to provide vital support to the Papers of Abraham Lincoln. With that support, in the past year, the Papers of Abraham Lincoln has located and scanned nearly 3,000 documents, proofread more than 2,500 transcriptions, and applied basic contextual information to more than 2,000 documents in its database. The project continues to make its preliminary findings known through news releases, a quarterly newsletter, public presentations, and answers to scores of research queries each year. It has also prepared short illustrated volumes of selected documents from Lincoln’s Presidency for distribution to Museum visitors. The first, On Lincoln’s Mind: Leading the Nation to the Gettysburg Address, was published in November 2013 as part of the ALPLM’s celebration of the sesquicentennial of the Gettysburg Address.

General operating support helps to support and maintain the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation as the ALPLF focuses on our core mission: supporting the educational and cultural programming of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Our institution has made great strides in its young history, and we could not have accomplished so much without the incredible generosity and leadership of donors who provide general operating support.

We are incredibly grateful to generous major donors, particularly Aon and Alphawood Foundation Chicago in helping us to preserve and

share Lincoln’s legacy with hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and millions of online visitors worldwide.

LegacyField TripsField trips to the ALPLM are often life-changing, especially for students who live in low-income communities. Several teachers have reported that many of their students had never traveled beyond the boundaries of their neighborhoods and the field trip experience to our museum expanded their horizons on many levels. Our museum’s engaging, emotional and educational exhibits help students get a sense of what it was like to live during the Civil War era. They also learn about the tremendous courage and wisdom Lincoln displayed in trying to end slavery, preserve the union and reunite the nation after such heartbreak and bloodshed.

We thank Caterpillar and the Winnick Family Foundation for their generous support of thousands of students during this past fiscal year.

LegacyIllinois Office of TourismThe Illinois Office of Tourism’s Marketing Partnership Program (MPP) provides matching grants to local not-for-profits to promote tourism attractions and events in markets outside a 70-mile radius from the attraction/event, thus increasing hotel/

motel occupancy and travel into and throughout the state. The MPP funds have made it possible for the ALPLM to advertise through billboards, radio spots in Chicago, St. Louis, and border states, in the official Illinois Travel Guides (these guides are circulated throughout the Midwest and some international markets), and to host events with partners like Radio Disney-St. Louis. These marketing opportunities help to increase attendance and attract new and diverse audiences to our museum.

GATXThe ALPLF was pleased to welcome GATX Corporation as a new foundation partner this past year. Brian A. Kenney, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, recently visited the museum with several employees and gave a personal gift and corporate philanthropic support from GATX. Mr. Kenney stated: “Given President Lincoln’s pivotal role in the birth of the transcontinental railroad, supporting the Lincoln Library Foundation was an easy decision for a railcar leasing company such as GATX. Carla, Angela and the ALPM staff are great to work with, and GATX looks forward to providing ongoing support to this critically important institution.”

The Dr. Scholl FoundationLast March, with generous support from The Dr. Scholl Foundation, approximately 40 students from The Autism Program of Illinois (TAP), developed by The Hope Institute for Children and Families, participated in our Lincoln Time Travelers program to culminate the six-week session of their social skills course.

This event was enhanced by an April Autism Awareness Day event at the museum two weeks later which allowed students to bring their parents and siblings. The grant allowed students to try out different social strategies as they toured the museum while interacting with historical interpreters and musicians. TAP students enjoyed a cultural day of multisensory, interactive educational exhibits with their parents and siblings while learning more about Lincoln’s life and times.

The Autism Program staff reported that the experience exceeded expectations for the day and gave students an environment to practice social skills. All parents surveyed agreed that the experience gave their child a good opportunity to practice social skills in a cultural setting and the experience met or exceeded expectations. Finally, 100 percent of parents strongly agreed that students’ interactions with actors, staff and volunteers were worthwhile and helpful.

Autism Awareness Day at the ALPLM also provided an opportunity for community members and visitors to speak with The Autism Program of Illinois about services and supports for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism screenings were offered free for

children and youth aged 1 ½ to 17. Programs include diagnostic clinic, counseling services and support for parents and siblings.

We thank The Dr. Scholl Foundation for making this important program possible.

Macy’s and Archer Daniels MidlandGenerous sponsorship support from Macy’s and Archer Daniels Midland Company enabled the ALPLM to present the world-class exhibition, “Pilgrimage” by the renowned photographer, Annie Leibovitz. The exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

On Friday, February 7, 2014, Annie Leibovitz visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum for a special ALPLF member preview to open her new exhibition. Approximately 500 members attended, and many were overjoyed to have the opportunity to get a “selfie” with Ms. Leibovitz. Pilgrimage includes many Lincoln-related artifacts: photos of Lincoln’s gloves and hat from the night he died, his notes from the Gettysburg address, the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, and models for Lincoln’s statue in the studio of sculptor Daniel Chester French. Other Pilgrimage highlights include such treasures as Virginia Woolf ’s writing desk, Ansel Adams’ darkroom, Martha Graham’s props, Georgia O’Keefe’s adobe, Annie Oakley’s heart-shaped shooting target, and Elvis

Presley’s Harley-Davidson.

Support from Macy’s and Archer Daniels Midland Company enabled the foundation to present Pilgrimage in the context of the presidential museum

of Abraham Lincoln, one of the most celebrated leaders in history to more than 187,000 visitors from February to August, 2014.

Oral History DonorsThe Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Oral History Program is dedicated to preserving the stories and memories of Illinois citizens. Oral history combines the most ancient way humanity has preserved history—through the spoken word—with modern technology.

This year, the Oral History Program received generous support from the Tawani Foundation to conduct and transcribe in depth interviews with General John Borling, a retired United States Air Force Major General whose illustrious military career spanned 37 years. After spending 6 and ½ years in captivity in North Vietnam, Capt Borling was released from prison during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973. A highly decorated officer, he received the Silver Star, Two Bronze Stars with V for Valor and Two Purple Hearts. Among his many assignments, he was an F-15 Eagle fighter pilot and commander of the famed “Hat in the Ring” Squadron. Oral History Director Mark DePue reports that more than 19 hours of interviews have been recorded with General Borling to date.

Many generous donors have also made possible the Governor Jim Thompson Oral History Project, which is preserving the stories of and about Illinois’ longest-serving chief executive. To date, Director Mark DePue and Dr. Mike Czaplicki, who conducts interviews and also edits the interviews, have interviewed fifteen individuals, and have collected over 118 hours of interviews. Dr. DePue reports that: “We still have a long way to go with this project, but are excited about creating this invaluable record of Governor Thompson’s administration.” A heartfelt thank you to the following donors: 36 Foundation, Inc., The William and Karen Goodyear Foundation, Jannotta Family Fund, John Rowe, Martin Koldyke, Stanton, Cook, Dan Patterson, Carol Walter, Peter Fox, Anton Valukas, Robert Malott, William Cellini, Ann Louisin, the Richard and Ellen Sandor Family Foundation, Navigant Consulting, Winston & Strawn, LLP, Romani Group, Inc., JMR Charities, Inc., Crab Tree Farm Foundation, Inc., and The MacDougal Family Foundation. Many of the interviews are already posted on the Oral History webpage, at www.oralhistory.illinois.gov.

Special thanks also to Leroy Wehrle for his contributions to the Oral History Project.

Our Lasting GratitudeFounding Charter and Lincoln Legacy Society MembersBefore the bands played, the banners waved, and the President of the United states cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening of the most visited Presidential facility in the nation—our founding Charter Members stepped up to put their name on history. As our fiscal year comes to a close, the Foundation would like to once again extend our lasting grati-tude for your belief in the project that singularly changed the landscape of downtown Springfield and is well on its way to having educated three million visitors so far.
