Mental Illness Awareness Sunday, September 23rd
On this day, we will unite in praying for persons who have mental disorders of all kinds. We also pray
for their families and other care givers.
One in every 5 adult Americans, more than 30million people, suffer from a diagnosable mental
disorder in any 6 month period.
18 million people suffer from schizophrenia and/or a depressive disorder.
Over 7 million children and adolescents suffer from a mental illness.
Each year, over 35,000 Americans commit suicide, an average of one suicide every 15 minutes.
The cost to the U.S. economy of mental illness is estimated $50-100 billion annually.
(information from National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depressive Disorders.)
Comments from your Church Council Holy Trinity Church Council met on Sunday, August 19th. Each committee has been asked to submit a
wish list of items that are needed that are not covered in our spending plan. A microphone has been
ordered for assisting ministers. There will be opportunities to enhance our worship, our education
program, and other things. Please watch for announcements of those opportunities. There is a new
Bereavement Fund set up to help provide for funeral meals. With focuses each month on different
opportunities for financial support over the next year, as well as wish list items, we all need to remember
our stewardship to Holy Trinity’s spending plan. With fall approaching, and a new school year already
in progress, we have awesome opportunities for education for all ages. The updates of the new web site
for Holy Trinity have been transitioned and Julie Sager is the primary point of contact. The church
insurance policy has been reviewed and updated. Our new Intern, Chad Gurley, will be welcomed on
Sunday, August 26th.
Please know that your church council members are always available for questions or input from our Holy
Trinity community.
God’s peace and love to all,
Cathy Crimi

Paraments
Part of the Worship Team’s duties is to take care of the worship space and see that it is properly vested
for the appropriate liturgical season. Many of our paraments (if not all) originated at the “old” church on
West End.
It is our wish for the church to begin to replace the older paraments with new ones that will showcase
our altar and magnify our worship space for years to come. These new paraments will also highlight our
beautiful tapestries. We hope that members of the church will want to donate these paraments in mem-
ory or honor of a loved one(s).
In purchasing paraments (altar hanging and pulpit hanging), we will also purchase matching stoles
(pastors wear around their neck), chasubles (large apron worn for Eucharist services), burse (covers the
bread and wine), and veil (goes over communion elements).
We would like to start with the season of Advent and complete each set before purchasing another sea-
son. Please find below a list of the paraments and other items we would like to purchase. If you are in-
terested in purchasing all or one of these items, please see Suzie Sittel or Pastor Kevin.
-Pulpit Hanging $147
-Altar Frontal $362
-Burse and Veil $225
-Chasuble and Stole $729
Connections Coordinator My name is Xiommi Schimmelpfennig. I am 38 years old, married, and between
my husband and I we have 10 children. Only 1 lives with us here in Nashville. We
also have a 4 year old grandson and one on his way. I moved to Nashville 2 years
ago because my job was moved from Orlando. Two months ago, I resign to take
time to do things that I've always wanted to do but, never had the time or energy.
In our past church, we were involved in leadership, Sunday school, evangelism,
and communion assistant. I am very excited to be part of this welcoming and
caring church and to be able to serve as a Connections Coordinator. Looking
forward to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior!
As the Connections Coordinator, Xiommi will help: with new member and
member assimilation, volunteer coordination, and other ministries within the
church as needed. We give thanks for her willingness to help Holy Trinity in this
way!
Page 12 September 2012
We’ve been told this since our days in Sunday school: We want to give and we need to give gladly. A
spirit of generosity isn’t enough to guide us in our decisions. What else does Scripture have to say on
the subject? Three kinds of financial giving are mentioned in the Bible: offerings, tithes and alms.
Understanding what they mean helps us achieve a thoughtful, balanced plan for our cheerful giving.
Biblical Advice for Cheerful Givers Taken from Stories of Faith In Action
Offerings and Tithing
On the first day of every week, each of you is to put aside and save whatever extra you earn, so that collections need not be taken
when I come (1 Corinthians 16:2).
The faith practice of making a regular financial offering to your congregation is grounded in a “first fruits”
philosophy. We might think of this giving as “business as usual.” You pay the rent, you buy groceries and
you contribute regularly to help carry out God’s mission in the world. Your generosity isn’t an afterthought;
it’s part of your day-in-and-day-out joyful response as a child of God. These offerings first help to support
local ministries, outreach and more. Your congregation then shares a portion of your offering—mission sup-
port—with your synod and the churchwide expression. Stories of Faith in Action is filled with examples of
how mission support enables us to do God’s work with our hands. Many Christians talk about their regular
contribution as a tithe. This helps them to differentiate between their financial commitment to their congre-
gation and the special offerings they designate to specific causes. Such causes may include ELCA World
Hunger, a program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, your congregation’s building fund or a
pan-Lutheran organization such as Lutheran World Relief. We encourage your designated support of these
worthy causes. But we also recommend that these offerings are given above and beyond, and never in place
of, your commitment to your regular congregational offering.
Alms
Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no
thief comes near and no moth destroys (Luke 12:33).
Alms are our compassionate, heartfelt response to the people Jesus mentioned in Matthew 25: those “least” of
our sisters and brothers who are “less” than we in circumstance only and always our equal in their humanity.
This is our most personal and spontaneous kind of giving in response to people in need. Think about the
homeless man you see everyday by the bus stop or the family in your congregation whose home was lost dur-
ing a fire. Your outreach makes God’s love for them feel very real and very immediate; your kindness reveals
Christ’s presence within them as well.
Time and Talent
It’s also important to remember that when we focus exclusively on giving in terms of money alone, we lose
sight of the bigger picture. God calls us to be generous in all areas our lives and invites us to explore the many
opportunities to share ourselves through our time and talent. When we ground our giving in a biblical context,
our financial generosity becomes an expression of our love for God, for our neighbor and for ourselves. We are
new people in Christ: compassionate and eager to share. We give cheerfully because God has given us so much.
Page 13 September 2012
New Member Classes Have you searched for a place to call home?
Have you looked for a community to share your gifts and grow in faith?
Have you yearned for a large extended family that will support you, uplift you, walk with you, and
help you grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ?
Then we welcome you home to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
We welcome you to come home and worship with us, dine with us, fellowship with us, grow in Christian
love toward one another with us.
Have you considered becoming part of a family of faith?
First off, what does it mean to be a “member” of a church?
Many of us are members of Country Clubs, PTA’s, Rotary, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Homeowners Asso-
ciation, etc.
But what does it mean to be a church member? All baptized Christians are, of course, members of the
Body of Christ, of the one holy, catholic, and apostolic church—whether they “do” anything about it or
not. The “doing,” can be signing on to a local congregation, thus becoming a member of it. In the Lu-
theran Church, one can become a member of the church through their baptism at that particular church,
by letter of transfer from another Lutheran congregation, or by Affirmation of faith from another denomi-
nation. But being a church member does not bring with it the same lifestyle and responsibilities that may
come from being a member of Boy Scouts, PTA, Rotary, Girl Scouts, YMCA, Country Club, or oth-
ers. The church does not exist so that it may be one more social sorority or fraternity for people. Instead,
being a church member implies a relationship that does not hinge on what you wear, how much money
you have, your race or sex. Instead, it brings the promise of eternal relations with God in Christ. This
relationship is nurtured by and with the fellowship of believers, the communion of saints, the word pro-
claimed, the sacraments administered, and prayers said.
Come and learn more about Holy Trinity and what it means to be a member of this family of
faith!
Join Pastor Kevin for New Member/Inquires Classes on Sunday’s September 16th and 23rd
at 11am in his office. If you choose to join Holy Trinity, we will receive you as new mem-
bers on Sunday, September 30th at 9:30am with a reception following.
Oktoberfest Reminder
Don’t forget to start bringing in your Silent Auction items and place them in
the fellowship hall closet. Any items donated for this cause will need to be
tagged with Silent Auction, the name of the donor and their desired starting bid
if that matters. Les Dahl, Carol Cottingham or Carolyn Akland can be
contacted with any questions. Also, when visiting your favorite restaurant, hair
salon or store, consider asking for a gift certificate for the auction!

Upon graduation from elementary school after the sixth grade, my teacher
that year, Mrs. Schumacher, looked into a crystal ball and "prophesied" that
someday in the future I, the shy and awkward little boy in her class, crowded
with crooked teeth and peppered with freckles, would become a minister in
my adulthood. Though I would continually ponder her words throughout
my life, that day, at eleven years old, I balked at her premonition and jeal-
ously wondered why Mrs. Schumacher didn't see me as the famous NFL
player Jimmy Lawson would supposedly become or the celebrated artist Ca-
sey Ellis was destined to be. It was then I crossed my arms, turned up my nose, and decided that Mrs.
Schumacher as a fortune teller was simply a fraud. Awesome teacher, yes; Jeanne Dixon, no. I plainly
decided I would not become an "un-cool" minister, no way! ... while also vowing never to go bald or
grow hair out of my nose like my grandfather. Well, truly God does have quite a sense of humor, for
fast forward over my life of joys, heartbreak, laughter, and tears, and here I am, twenty-eight years
later, as none other than your pastoral intern, a minister-in-training ... who is much more often in need
of trimming my nose hair than the hair ever-vanishing atop my head.
Truly, I am so honored and excited to be a part of the Holy Trinity family this coming year and
am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. Though it has taken me some time
to answer God's patient, faithful call for my life, as a second-career Masters of Divinity student with
billowing hopes and countless prayers, I am very enthusiastic about this journey into ministry with all
of you at Holy Trinity. Consider me your caregiver, confidant, and prayer partner; the water boy to
quench your thirst during those exhausting days, and the cheerleader to wildly shake pom-poms when
celebrating your joys (though, be advised, I'm too old to do cartwheels anymore). Whatever the situa-
tion, whatever the circumstance, do not hesitate to reach out to me. In turn, I will appreciate your sug-
gestions and guidance, your questions and concerns, and your care and support. I am so very thankful
God has called me to serve you. Our God of delightful surprises is sure to have many blessings in store
for us. Let us wait and watch together expectantly.

CALLING ALL HABITAT BUILDERS!
Along with several other faith communities, Holy Trinity will participate in the Habitat-Unity Build on Satur-
day, September 15th. We will be installing siding, insulation, soffit, baffle boards, and blocking for drywall.
No special skills or tools are needed. The Supervisors on Site (SOS) will show us how!
Remember, Habitat houses are not hand-outs. Homeowners purchase the homes and put in many hours of
sweat equity.
Join us as we give a hand up to a hard working family as we help them build their home.
Sign up on the sheet in the fellowship hall or contact Linn Folger, 268.6994

And have you noticed the great new picnic tables on the grounds at Holy T? They were built by
Joshua Larkin, a member of Brentwood Boy Scout Troop One. Joshua is a freshman at Franklin
Road Academy and attended a Montessori preschool as a child. Because of that, he decided to build
picnic tables for the HTM children as part of his Eagle Scout requirements. Thank you, Joshua!
