A WELCOME FROM
On behalf of the Edwards School of Business, I warmly welcome you to the eighth annual World Mining Competition! This event is Canada’s first mining strategy case competition. As such, it brings together multidisciplinary student teams from across the globe to investi-gate and explore critical issues within the mining sector. This year’s theme – Driving Global Innovation – illustrates the importance of developing new possibilities that can revolution-ize mining industry practices. It underscores the value of implementing new technological advancements that help mining companies to excel. The World Mining Competition is an event of which the Edwards School is Business is particularly proud. As a student-run and student-inspired event, the case competition is motivated by actual situations encountered within the mining industry. This connectedness to practical problems permits students the opportunity to galvanize their learning through active participation. Our mission at the Ed-wards School is to develop business professionals to build nations. The rewarding experi-ences obtained by our student teams are a testament to this skill-building mission. I am exceptionally grateful to K+S Potash Canada for their generous support. I acknowledge the superb title sponsorship provided by Nutrien. Thank you to the industry professionals for contributing your time, talent and expertise in evaluating the student team presentations. Thank you to the student teams for your preparation and perseverance. I am especially ap-preciative of the international teams who are visiting Saskatoon, and wish you the very best for a successful and rewarding experience in the “City of Bridges”. Last - but not certainly not least - thank you to the student organizers for facilitating a phenomenal event. Your involvement and enthusiasm make me very proud to be affiliated with the Edwards School of Business.
All the best,
Keith A. Willoughby, Ph.D.

A WELCOME FROM
Delegates, I’m thrilled you’re here for the 2019 World Mining Competition. The U of S is at the heart of a mining province and we take pride in training the profession-als who continue to grow and bring innovation to this industry. Being at the World Mining Competition is a terrific way to get a glimpse into what the future could hold for you in the mining industry. Over the next few days, you will have the opportunity to take what you’ve learned in the class-room and apply it to a real-world situation – all while testing your ability to collaborate, communicate and problem-solve with your teammates across a variety of disciplines. I know you will learn more about the mining industry and about yourselves during this event. And when you’re not competing, please take time to meet other delegates and explore our beautiful campus and city – because these ex-periences and connections are an important part of competitions like this. Thank you to the student organizers for all of your hard work in making this event a reality. It is a huge job that you accomplish in the midst of a full aca-demic load. We’re proud of you for pulling it off, and wish you the very best for the competition. Best of luck to all delegates!

Dear 2019 Delegates, On behalf of the 2019 World Mining Competition Executive Team, we are honoured and excited to welcome you to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for the 8th annual World Mining Competition. For many of you Canada is where you call home, however, for a select few this might be your first time to Canada and for that we want to wish you a sincere welcome! We can’t wait to see what these next couple days bring, a sense of achievement after all of your hard work, opportunities to network with in-dustry professionals and most importantly, some enjoyment and fun! Our theme for the 8th annual competition, ‘Driving Global Innovation’ exemplifies the driving forces that are in the forefront of today’s economic activity. Growth in technology has revolutionized sustainability, innova-tion and safety in the mining industry. Safety, sustainability and technology are three pillars under the theme of innovation, each of which are critical in the pursuit of industrial success on a global scale. With this theme in mind, our Executive Team has worked hard to pursue innovative ideas and grow different aspects of the competition this year. With the addition of the mine tour, we hope to give students a hands on learning experience where they can see first hand the innovative ideas and technology that is being im-plemented right here in Saskatchewan! We have a number of sponsors on board, both new and old, that are enthusiastic to showcase the different ways that they implement sustainable options in their business opera-tions. Our networking event gives them the perfect platform to share the future technologies of their compa-nies, which includes an electric mining vehicle in which this company has been recognized for their innova-tive technologies in the mining industry. Many of our participating sponsors collaborate to innovate and support each other to build a better community, both locally and globally. Their vision and dedication for building a better future is admirable. This year, our case works to build in elements of global sustainability and community impact, two important topics in the industry today. We are excited to see you collaborate and think outside of the box with your teammates to create a solution for our multidisciplinary case. We hope that the experience you have here leaves a positive lasting impact that you carry forward in your bright futures. We are proud and excited to have you here and wish you all the best in the competition and for the weekend.
