What 802.11ac can do for youAdd speed, versatility and reliability to your network

When 802.11ac finally arrives, projected around 2015-2016, businesses looking to incorporate new technologies with it will have many options. With faster speeds and room for more devices, 802.11ac paves the way for some very compelling new technology that can change the way you interact with customers. Utilizing this technology effectively will allow businesses to manage individual customer relationships and loyalty in new ways.

802.11ac will not only increase speed of delivery to mobile devices, it will also make the delivery of information seamless. 802.11ac products will use a concept called ‘beam-forming’. This strengthens the signal of a connection in one direction instead of sending weaker signals in all directions.

Think of it as focusing a laser beam on an object, instead of using an overhead light. It is strong, direct and targeted – to a specific device, resulting in better wireless connectivity and performance.

IEEE Standard Date Band Modulation Channel Bandwidth MIMO Maxi Speed

802.11n 2009 2.4 and 5 GHz Up to 64QAM 20, 40 MHz Up to 4x4 600 Mbits/s

802.11ac Now 5 GHz Up to 256QAM 40, 80, 160 MHz Up to 8x8 3 Gbits/s+

What does this mean?It means you (and your customers) will be able to access movies, information and other mobile applications faster, and with greater reliability.

Another concept – called “spatial streaming” (sometimes referred to as “MIMO” or “multiple input / multiple output”) is also changing with 802.11ac. With the old standard, an antenna could transmit up to 4 signal streams from one antenna. With 802.11ac, the number doubles to 8. This means stronger signals and more capacity to send simultaneous signals.

You can do a lot

With better performance and connectivity, wireless devices will continue to support new applications. With the release of Hotspot 2.0 (or PasspointTM), Internet users will benefit from instant connection and access to Wi-Fi without having to search for a provider or enter a password.

Hotspots that are 802.11ac capable will bring about a faster more sustainable connection. Moreover, any of the 802.11ac Wi-Fi hotspots that are connected to Hotspot 2.0 will allow customers to connect with more stability to many providers. The program will support Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) based authentication, the same technology that cellular networks currently use to grant users seamless handoffs between cell sites.

This means that carriers forging Wi-Fi roaming agreements with one another would make that seamless transition even more convenient for all Wi-Fi users. The second release PasspointTM in 2014 will enable t these changes and make it easier for people to connect to business, and vice versa.

You and your customers will be able to access movies, information and other mobile applications faster, and with greater reliability.

Location Based ServicesAs Hotspot becomes the norm, it will allow businesses to track guest preferences and locations, and direct targeted and relevant offers. Location-based services use geolocation to target a wireless device at a specific location.

You want sugar with that? Of course you do.

For example, you could walk into a shop, and a discount coupon for pops up on your mobile device. When you make your purchase and use the coupon, the shop now has data on you what time you arrived, what you ordered, and what items and offers may be of interest to you. This data can be used by the coffee shop to understand your preferences a and market directly to you.

The possibilities are endless.

Retailers, restaurants, hotels, resorts, spas, malls and airports are all opportunities for businesses to reach out, and for customers to reap the benefit. These types of interactions can be expected to increase and proliferate as long as they remain mutually beneficial. The benefit to consumers with cost savings and customized offers can go a long way towards brand loyalty.

It’s not science fiction anymore.

Now you can track and respond to customer preferences.

Rewards for Rewards Programs

Those retailers and hotels or airlines with rewards programs can also tie Location Based Services directly to their programs, and automatically update rewards points when a consumer shops at a particular venue, or uses a service. Businesses will now have geographic-specific data on customers habits, preferences and interests and can use that data to better market their services based on location.

Device manufacturers are already creating devices with ac capability and in the demanding world of data and entertainment, it is only a matter of time before the new becomes the norm. Preparing your business for the new standard, and staying on top of new technology can help increase your brand status and help you satisfy your customers demand for the next big thing.

What this means for businesses

“Location-based applications are extremely interesting for brands and retailers in that they allow those companies to direct consumers to outlets in their vicinity while simultaneously providing information about the products on offer. When these are allied to measures such as mobile coupons and vouchers, you have the combination of information and financial incentive which can be compelling for consumers. ”
