goetz Kloecker, Md, with patient nancy AlveyJames Graham Brown Cancer Center

Goetz Kloecker, MD, is founder, chairman and clinical advisor to both the local and national Lung Cancer Alliance, which supports patients with lung cancer and their families. He also established a cancer screening program at the University of Louisville Hospital.

Dr. Kloecker diagnosed Nancy J. Alvey with lung cancer. She is now an eight-year survivor. He connected Alvey with the Drive Cancer Out program, which is directed at children who smoke or have parents/grandparents who smoke. In addition to her involvement with Drive Cancer Out, Alvery also co-chairs the local Lung Cancer Alliance chapter.

Tad Seifert, MdNorton Healthcare

Tad Seifert, MD, director of the Norton Sports Health Concussion program, is the only fellowship-trained headache neurologist in Kentucky. During Kentucky’s 2012 legislative session, he shared his expertise to help secure the passage of House Bill 281, the interscholastic sports concussion bill. House Bill 281 requires any athlete who suffers a concussion to be cleared by a licensed physician before entering a sports competition again.

Brooke Sweeney, MdUofL Physicians Healthy for Life! Pediatric Obesity Program

Brooke Sweeney, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at the University of Louisville is also the medical director of Healthy for Life! She began Healthy for Life!, an interprofessional pediatric weight management program, in 2009 and has since served more than 2,000 patients and families.

The Seven Counties Services Healthcare Advocacy Awardpresented to an individual or organization that is the effective advocate at the local, state or national level concerning issues such as, but not limited to, access to care initiatives that support healthy lifestyles.


Hope Health Clinic

In February 2011, a group of concerned citizens formed a task force to address how to re-open a clinic to serve uninsured individuals. By September 2011, funding was secured, a facility was renovated, volunteer medical providers and clerical personnel recruited, and the first patients were seen. Today, the clinic is open four days and one evening a week and employs

nurse practitioners, one administrator and nurse patient navigator.

Hosparus, Inc.

For 35 years, Hosparus Inc., a fully accredited non-profit hospice organization, has provided care, comfort and counseling for people facing life-limiting illnesses in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Hosparus cares for nearly 6,000 patients and their families each year, regardless of their ability to pay. Their team of more than 450 healthcare professionals and volunteers provide medication management, personal

care and counseling in homes, assisted living facilities, inpatient units or hospitals.

Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation and the Center for Health Equity Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation’s Center for Health Equity provides a new and hopeful approach to the public’s health. The center addresses the root causes of health disparities by supporting projects, policies and research working to change the correlation between health and longevity and socioeconomic status. It serves as a catalyst for

collaboration between communities, organizations and government entities.

Telehealth Primary Care ClinicsSaint Joseph Health System, part of KentuckyOne HealthKentuckyOne Health’s two new telehealth clinics, Saint Joseph Telehealth Primary Care Clinic-Clay City, and Saint Joseph Telehealth Primary-Care Clinic-Campton extend access to care for Kentucky’s most underserved counties. They are staffed by nurse practitioners, nurses and office

coordinators and utilize telemedicine technology to collaborate with physicians, which provides additional access to specialty care and minimizes the patients’ need to travel. From 2011-2012, the clinics served 1,383 patients.

AsthmapolisAsthmapolis uses a comprehensive system of inhaler sensors, mobile applications, web platform and support services to help

people more effectively manage and control their asthma. Complementary systems help physicians identify individuals who are worsening or need more attention. Asthmapolis also provides public health researchers with data on the burden of asthma in communities.

Cardiovascular Innovation InstituteThe Cardiovascular Innovation Institute (CII) is a non-profit research, development and translational collaboration between The University of Louisville and Jewish Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health. At CII, investigators utilize state-of-the-art equipment and technologies to reduce cardiovascular disease’s impact on healthcare costs and improve and extend the lives of individuals with cardiovascular disease.

John CarrollCreative StrategiesJohn Carroll is a management and technology consultant with extensive experience designing, developing and managing healthcare and government systems and private sector projects. Carroll owns Louisville-based Creative Strategies, which uses the latest technology to design, develop and implement technology solutions for clients in the healthcare, government, banking and transaction-processing industries.

The Crowe Horwath Innovation Awardpresented to an individual or organization that has positively impacted healthcare delivery costs through the development, design or implementation of new technology.


diane HagueSeven Counties ServicesDiane Hague, vice president of addictions at Seven Counties Services and director of the Jefferson Alcohol & Drug Abuse Center, has developed and implemented many programs in Kentucky for addicts, family members of people with addictions, children of alcoholics and more. For example, her program Project Link’s goal is to link addicted pregnant women to addiction treatment and decrease the number of addicted newborns. Last

year, 70 Project Link babies were born alcohol and drug-free.

InCAPS (International Center for Advanced Pharmacy Services) at Sullivan University College of Pharmacy The InterNational Center for Advanced Pharmacy Services (INCAPS) was developed by Dr. Hieu Tran, founding dean of the College of Pharmacy at Sullivan University and is directed by Dr. BC Childress. INCAPS is a licensed pharmacy and ambulatory care clinic located at Sullivan University

College of Health Sciences. INCAPS serves students, employees and the public by providing health and wellness services and promoting safe and effective medication use.

LaQuandra S. nesbitt, MdLouisville Metro Public Health and WellnessLaQuandra S. Nesbitt, MD, is director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) in Louisville. Nesbitt and her team of 300 employees provide programs and services to 750,000 residents through three divisions: clinical services, community health and environmental health and emergency preparedness. In addition, the department is home to the Center for Health Equity.

The design reflects the CII’s cutting-edge research and is architecturally compatible with the materials, strong horizontal lines and circular forms of the adjacent School of Medicine. Bright and cheerful spaces with colorful materials, textures, finishes, and the “open plan” labs facilitate collaboration and scientific discovery.

norton Brownsboro HospitalNorton Brownsboro Hospital was designed by Karlsberger Architecture, Inc. Unique features include an open, airy design, large rooftop meditation gardens and a soothing color palette. Each of the 127 patient rooms is private and equipped with a refrigerator, safe, flat-screen TV and sleeper sofa. Norton Brownsboro became the first LEED-certified hospital in Kentucky in December 2012.

Renovation of Emergency Psychiatric Services Unit at University of Louisville HospitalEmergency Psychiatric Services (EPS) Unit at University of Louisville Hospital was designed by JRA Architects. The new design shifts away from institutional-like psychiatric settings and emphasizes spatial openness; increased light and color; and increased patient

privacy. It is a safe, welcoming space that shows patients respect.

The Middleton Reutlinger Facility Design Awardpresented to an individual or organization that has designed, built or implemented the most innovative facility within the region.


Crime Victim Services at ElderServe

For more than 50 years, ElderServe, a community-based not-for-profit, has provided a range of programs and services for older adults in Louisville. One of its signature programs is that for elderly victims on crime. Partnering with the LMPD’s Crimes Against Seniors Unit, this program assists approximately 1,300 elderly victims annually.

Kosair Children’s Medical Center – BrownsboroKosair Children’s Medical Center – Brownsboro is an inviting place for children and families with many amenities to entertain and distract patients and family members. For exa m p l e, “G et We l l Tow n ,” w h i c h p l a y s te l ev i s i o n monitors throughout the facility. This interactive pediatric educational and play television system allows patients to learn about their condition, medications, follow-up care

and play games and watch movies.

UK Arts in HealthcareUK Arts in HealthCare program recognizes the arts and artists as powerful and positive forces in the healing process. The UK Arts in Healthcare program works closely with architects, interior designers, lighting designers, IT and landscape architects to integrate art as an architectural element at the Lexington-based hospital. The program uses primarily local and regional artists giving the collection a

uniquely Kentucky feel and provides a sense of familiarity and comfort to patients, staff and visitors.

The Consumer First Awardpresented to an individual or organization that has demonstrated the most “consumer friendly” program or facility. This is the only award selected by the community.


Emma Birks, Md, PhdJHSMH, part of KentuckyOne HealthEmma Birks, MD, PhD, medical director of the Jewish Hospital Heart Failure, Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support program and professor of cardiovascular medicine with UofL, is passionate about heart transplantation. She led and developed a new LVAD recovery program at Jewish Hospital. During her tenure at Jewish and UofL, the size of the heart failure program and number of new referrals has more than doubled.

Anthony E. dragun, Md James Graham Brown Cancer CenterAnthony E. Dragun, MD, associate professor and vice chairman of radiation oncology at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, also is the department’s residency program director and co-director of the Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer program. He is the principal investigator of the only once-weekly breast cancer radiotherapy trial in the U.S. He received the 2010 Seven Counties Services Healthcare Advocacy MediStar.

Steven T. Hester, MdNorton HealthcareSteven T. Hester, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Norton Healthcare maintains consistent attention to hospital operations and serves as a champion for the patient. He led Norton Healthcare’s partnership with Humana to create and manage an Accountable Care Organization. Under his leadership, the Norton Healthcare Centers for Prevention and Wellness is systematically advancing engagement in

healthy choices and awareness of health issues.

Michael Marvin, MdJHSMH, part of KentuckyOne HealthMichael Marvin, MD, director of transplantation at Jewish Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health, and chief of transplantation at the University of Louisville is a kidney/liver/pancreas transplant surgeon with the Trager Transplant Center at Jewish Hospital. He is also the co-principal investigator of the Hand Transplant program, the largest program of its kind in the country.

The Physician of the Year Awardpresented to a physician who has demonstrated outstanding leadership on a local, state or national level to improve accessibility, affordability and quality of healthcare in our region.


Alexander g. digenis, Md Kentucky Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery InstituteAlexander G. Digenis, MD, began his career in 1997 as a clinical professor with the University of Louisville Department of Plastic Surgery and continues to lecture in this role. In private practice he sits on national committees, discussing and evaluating emerging trends and technology in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is also one of the founding medical directors of Norton Healthcare’s Breast Health program, which educates

and guides women in preventative breast health.

John L. Roberts, Md University of Louisville School of MedicineJohn L. Roberts, MD, vice chair for pediatric medical education and dean for graduate medical education at the University of Louisville, is involved in medical student education and the continuing medical education of physicians. He also serves as chairman of Norton Healthcare’s Continuing Medical Education committee and chairman of the Kentucky Medical Association’s Continuing Medical Education committee.

Kim Tharp-Barrie, dnP Norton HealthcareAs a vice president and core leader of Norton Healthcare Institute for Nursing, Kim Tharp-Barrie, DNP, created a nationally recognized best practice care delivery model. The Institute has helped nearly 1,000 employees attain higher levels of medical education. She also teaches at-risk kids from the Greater Clark County Indiana schools to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). To date, all students passed their CNA certification; 17 work at Norton

Healthcare, and several are working on healthcare-related college degrees.

Bill Francis Bill Francis was born in Louisville and graduated from St. Xavier High School. Bill graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in political science. He began his broadcast career at WAVE radio and TV in the 1970s and worked for WLKY-TV in the 1980s. Bill has been a part of the Fox 41 news team since 1990.

Bill’s career has spanned three decades, during which he has covered such stories as the volatile Jefferson County busing riots of the 1970s, several national political conventions and visits to the U.S. by Pope John Paul II.

Bill is married and has two children.
