4-H Youth Civic Governance Delegation visit Arizona State Legislature

A delegation of five youth are involved with the second year of “Youth Leadership in Community Vitality”. They planned a trip to Arizona’s State Capitol to share their vision for ATV use in Arizona. Their long-term goal is: “Design, develop, and maintain OHV parks where the safety of the riders and health of the environment is first priority.” March 8/9, a youth/adult delegation visited Arizona State Legisla-ture. The Graham County delegation included Graham County Supervisor, Drew John and five youth: Tiffany and Thomas Adamson, Clint Dryden, Jennifer Sherlock and Kacie Talley; and two leaders: Sissy Fischler and Cindy Pearson. They were introduced from the Senate floor and in the Natural Resources and Rural Affairs Committee meeting. They met with State Senator Jake Flake, District #5, to discuss SB 1508. They also met with Josh Skube, Page; David Kerr, Page and Sen-ate Reader; and Joe Kubacki, Senate Sargent of Arms, to learn about their positions and how the teens might some day serve in those capacities. They visited with District 5 Representatives, Bill Konopnicki and Jack Brown. The “Mototrac” OHV committee shared the design of a new OHV park in Maricopa County. Donald Butler, Director of Agriculture, ex-plained the role of the Department of Agriculture. What should we do next? All of the youth want to stay involved with the bill. They want to speak about the amendments and keep watching for new wording in the amendment, return to the committee meetings, and sit in on an advisory board meeting to become the youth voice. 4-H MEMBERS TAKE PART IN THE CELEBRATION AT SUPER WAL-MART GRAND OPENING WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22 & 25

4-h members and leaders that worked at this event were; J.D. Shipman, Dakota Crockett (J.D.’s cousin), Joycie Tovar, Emily & Cindi Porter, Virginia & Diana Deiter, Rachel & Becci East, Sara Garrett, Clint & Bunny Dryden, Adam Dutt, Kacie Talley, Cody Hoopes, Tiffany Adamson, Thomas Adamson, Taylar & Patti Cunningham, Jennifer Sherlock, Melvina Adolf, 4-H Youth De-velopment Agent. Youth dressed in a variety of costumes and helped Julie Castillo (coordinator of the event), hand out trophies to the car show winners, and did many other things throughout the two-day event of community service.

Youth that attended from Graham County 4-H where Kadi Vanderbloemen, Domingo Skinner, Summer Skinner, Melissa Wilson, Julie Garrett, Jennifer Sherlock, Teen Counselor, Sherli Skinner, Chaperone, Kathy Garrett, Chaperone this year’s camp which was held at the Huachuca Oaks Baptist Campgrounds, in Hereford, Arizona. LEAP Camp was wonderful! There were more kids this year from the different counties. It was great to see the kids from last year return and move up to help and be counselors. They have all grown and stepped out of their comfort zones to be able to help the Tweens learn and know that they can do whatever they set their minds to do. The games, skits and songs were all great! The kids came up with some really cute ideas and presented them with confidence. LEAP Camp is an awesome experience for these kids between the ages of 11-13. They learn leadership, friendship, skills, crafts and over all have a wonderful experi-ence that will carry with them throughout their lives. I hope we have more kids go next year!!!!! Thanks. Sherli “I had a great time at L.E.A.P. Camp! It was a good learning experience and a very FUN Camp. I can’t wait till next year to attend again. Jennifer Sherlock Sixty-one youth and adults were a part of the 2006 LEAP camp. Saturday evening began with “getting to know you” games and a group activity in the chapel that involved the “World’s Largest Underpants”. Sunday morning youth and adults challenged themselves at the Fort Huachuca Obstacle Course. Soldiers from the 504th Signal Battalion also taught youth land navigation skills during that time. Sunday afternoon youth and adults participated in the Rolling River—a water conservation model, Amateur Radio Operations where youth were able to talk to people from Tennessee and New York over ham radio equipment, made dream-catchers and painted candles, and rappelled off the ravine wall at Huachuca Oaks Baptist Camp. That eve-ning youth and adults had a campfire with songs, skits, and fellowship. Monday morning, youth wrote let-ters to deployed soldiers, made fleece hats for underprivileged youth, made origami frogs and wrote thank you letters. Darcey Tesseman

4-H Completer Requirements 2006 1. Attend 75% Project Club Meetings. 2. Attend 75% Community Club Meetings (9 are held 7 = 75%). Or 6 community club meetings with 2 hours of Documented Community service pre-approved and signed, by your leader, Or 5 community club meetings with 4 hours of documented community service pre-approved and signed, by your leader. (Must attend entire event to receive credit, one community club credit can be from another county’s community club, if documented correctly.) 3. Demonstration/Informative Speech - County level (in your project area). Must attend entire event to receive credit. Demonstration/Informative speech must be given at one of the scheduled demonstration/informative speech days.

DEMONSTRATIONS A demonstration puts words into action. An effective demonstration teaches others how to do something by showing while telling -- and showing really is worth a thousand words. At the end of a demonstration, you should have a finished product to show to your audience. INFORMATIVE SPEECH An informative speech tells about something. Topic must be 4-H project related. It also uses visual aids and should include a minimum of three posters, slides, or other visuals. 4. TWO other County 4-H Events A. Fundraiser B. Spring/Summer Fair C. Parades
