The 37th Engineering Development Motivation
and Awareness Training Program
23rd -28th January 2016
UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA
Organised by
INTRODUCTION Education alone today is never enough for us to survive in this fast-growing world as globalization has evolved our daily life. The ability is know what the market wants and how to sell one’s talent while survive the competition with others is the key factor to success. Undergraduates today have been labelled as uninspired and lack of authenticity, and this is why EDMAT is here to help the undergraduates.
EDMAT (Engineering Development, Motivation and Awareness
Training) is an annual motivational program organized by The
Engineering Society, University of Malaya since 1978. This training
program aims to develop, motivate and create the awareness of the
undergraduates, preparing the undergraduates for the world they are
going to step into.
The main objective of EDMAT is to implant leadership characteristics in
management as well as develop outstanding interpersonal skills among
participants. This is a comprehensive program which covers all the
aspects to accomplish both mental and physical development. It is to
achieve a proper balance between academic and interpersonal
development.
For the past 36 years, targeted EDMAT participants were engineering
undergraduates from ASEAN universities besides local universities in
Malaysia. This year, we would like to take a step further by also inviting
participants from various field of studies.
History
EDMAT is a camp that has trained, developed, motivated and created the
awareness of the undergraduates from all over Malaysia and Asia Pacific
region. EDMAT has first started in 1978 and has been organised every
year. This year, it is the 37th year of EDMAT. With its focus in
developing undergraduates, EDMAT has proven be beneficial to many
participants and the organising committee and achieved its goal. It also
has gained the reputation to be known as one of the excellent programs in
Engineering Faculty of University of Malaya.
OBJECTIVES
1. To foster better understanding in culture of students from various
countries.
2. Inculcate leadership and management skills.
3. Develop interpersonal and communication skills.
4. Encourage undergraduates to think critically and rationally.
6. To foster deeper understanding and better relationship among the
participants from various nations.
7. To create public awareness among participants so that they will
play a vital role in society.
THEME EDMAT-37 theme is “Vision into Reality”. We believe that every great
endeavour starts with a vision. But the real challenge is turning them into
reality, as only then do they mean something. This may seem like a difficult
task, but EDMAT aims to provide participants with the tools and values to
systematically and efficiently turn their ideas into action, and action into
success. Through EDMAT, participants will discover their true potential
while also gaining insight into the inner workings of professional life.

Participants’ comments Chua Inn Hua
“After I joined EDMAT-36, the most very lucky thing is I get to know a lot of new
friends, and the second thing is I have learnt a lot of things like thinking skill, soft skill
and a lot more. Even this is an engineering camp, but the focus is not only on the
engineering things, it also includes a lot of other skills needed for future like financing,
communication and so on. throughout the activities, I have polished my leadership, I
learn to coordinate the members in a team, I realize that work cannot be done by own,
but in a team we work together, the fruit of labor would be much more precious.”
Aaron Mok Ji Yiong
“EDMAT-36 is a creatively designed camp targeted to help its participants to better
themselves in different aspects. Participants are challenged to juggle teamwork
communication, creative and innovative thinking and to have a critical and rational
mindset. Participants are able to draw their potential to the fullest by experiencing
varying activities ranging from seminars, team building, design presentation and
etcetera.”
Putri Fuu “The thing I love the most from this training is that; I got the conclusion that engineering students all over the world are the same: insane but outstanding. We can
have lots of laugh, fun conversation, kidding each other with no wall of different
country and culture in front of us when we have spare time. But when we got into
training session, we can do all the instruction professionally as an engineer-to-be.”
Chew Mei Chee EDMAT give me chance to communicate, play and learn together with Indonesianfriends. Along the way of EDMAT, we communicate with English. We are
exposed tovery effective talks from good speakers. We also have a clear image of
engineering road through activities organised and industrial visit. Overall, I gained
many good advice that is very useful for my future career.
Zhabrinna Senoputri “I gained a lot from EDMAT 35. The matters were delivered very well and I like the speakers overall. Some 'trademarks' of them, such as "stop bangauing!", story of
pilot, etc; Still remains in my mind until now. The games and party are very nice.
But for industrial visit, I hope it can be more attractive n all participants can go to the
same places. Not separated (some in Panasonic n others in Indah Water). Besides, all
things ran quite well n gave me deep impression. And the OCs are very friendly btw.”
Yap Yi An EDMAT 35, perhaps the best professional camp I have ever joined. The committeesare friendly, fun and always be ready to help us. The programs are very
nicely organised! I learnt a lot from the talks, seminars and workshops. Talks from
Rizal and IEM got me motivated and earned me confidence. I have a clearer picture
of what I want to do in the future. The debate gave a chance for us to talk in front of
the public to practice our thinking and speaking skills and confidence. I have had a
nice experience with people all over from Malaysia and Indonesian friends! To sum
up my words, EDMAT-35 is great!
Why you should join?
Semester break is too bored? Nothing to do? Then you join this annual event of
Engineering Faculty of University of Malaya! With just RM130 (RM150 for
international student), you get to enjoy accommodation, food, T-shirt, industrial visit,
Gala Dinner in hotel on top of those quality workshops and seminars that will benefit
you!
Ever imagine how are you going to be like when you graduate? With only a degree in
your hand, do you think you are what the market outside want? Do you think 3 or 4
years of study life is enough to train you into the survivor when you are in the
industry? EDMAT-37, tagged with the theme "Vision into Reality", is to train
participants in perceiving and bringing out your full potential.
Fear in talking in front of public? Do not have creative and innovative idea when
doing things? That’s what we want to train you through our debate session and Noble
session. You will learn to think critically and with confidence, speak in front of the
public to give your idea, and to communicate effectively with people.
Want to be a leader? Through our seminars, you will be equipped with leadership
quality, learning how to lead a team and co-operate with all the people in completing
a task.
Have no idea how to manage your money and expand your wealth? Ever think of
becoming an entrepreneur? Our financial talk is going to give you an insight into the
financial world, teaching you to effectively manage your own wealth.
You will get the chance to expand your network, meet awesome friends from all over
Malaysia and even the international! Interact with over 100 undergraduates, share
your experience and thought!
Undergraduates with the EDMAT experience will no longer be the passive majority in
the society who are uninspired and lack of authenticity but leaders who can lead and
take charge of the future world. Participants will now have the correct sets of skills
and values to enter rapidly growing society as competitors and winners.
We really hope to see you in EDMAT-37. The organising committee is ready to
