(Your First) Three Steps in Becoming a MSP
Think big, but start small.
Thinking big is great for the long term. Envisioning what you want your business to be. Decide for yourself: • What do you want to sell? • What kind of revenue do you think you can make? • What (and how much) do you need to sell to get there?
Start small. Start with the customers and products you have access to For the next 2 – 4 months. • How will you pitch them? • Survey them: what do they want? • Have strategic conversations with your customers from the get go.
Identify your product offerings.
Being a Managed Service Provider means exactly that: you are hired to manage multiple services. Your ideal customer wants to ensure that his or her business keeps running smoothly in times of unpredicted disaster. What are some of these things? • Online backup for desktops, servers, applications, and operating systems. • Antivirus • Hardware maintenance • Creation of secondary worksites
Don’t talk price, talk value.
Price is a Yugo. Focusing on price to sell your service will lead you to decreasing your revenue immediately. • Sell everything you have to offer, not just the cheapest solution. • Price is easier for the customer to argue with. • Price is tangible, value is not. • Once you’re debating price, you cannot start establishing value.
Value is a Honda. Sell your customers the long term advantages of your solutions. They will save money, heartache, and distraction in the long term by preventing business continuity issues. • Discuss the unrealized benefits of your offerings • Brag about yourself (use testimonials). • Focus on the intangible benefits (ex. “peace of mind”) that result from the purchase
