The Modern Empires

•Author Parag Khanna’s book is primarily about the world’s three modern empires and their power over the world’s second world countries.

•The three modern empires Khanna refers to are: China, Europe, and America.

•Khanna believes the power of these countries comes from globalization.

Mexico•Mexico is a country that is considered second world.

•Mexico used to be a leader in the export of oil.

•Mexico also had maquiladoras which were factories that produced manufactured goods.

•China has been able to move into Mexico and set up their own factories and with modern production lines is putting many Mexicans out of jobs.

Argentina•During the 1920’s Argentina went from being one of the poorest countries to being the 7th richest nation in the world.

•The rise of Argentina was due to its thriving production of beef and wheat.

•Argentina came out of WWII unharmed and welcomed the capital talent of Europe.

•Argentina suffered the same fate as many countries that are on top, a recession.

The Four China’s

•Khanna breaks China up into four different nations.

•They way he breaks china up into four parts is the south region, northeast region, and two western regions.

•China’s southern regions contain 60% of China’s wealth and almost equal in development to the U.S.

•The northeast region is no longer part of the third world because of industrialization.
