I hope everyone found them informative and useful. The aim of the programme is to: reduce bullying; prevent new bullying incidents from occurring and minimize the negative effects caused by bullying. Classes 3 – 8 will be having a weekly KiVa session, teaching valuable skills and knowledge, enhancing their social skills and empowering them to make good choices. Teachers will be informing you of the lesson content so that you can have follow up discussions at home to reinforce the work we are doing. The KiVa team will be dealing with individual cases of bullying and parents will be informed of the cases which have been addressed by the team. If need be, the parents can be invited to the school to discuss the case. However, that is not the standard procedure as the students are first given the chance to change their behavior. If you become aware of any bullying incidents it is important that you feed this back to the school. We will be reviewing the progress of this new initiative as we go and welcome any feedback. During the summer break teachers went to a three day maths training workshop run by Jamie York at Michael Park Steiner School in Auckland. Jamie York is an internationally respected Waldorf maths consultant who has taught in Waldorf schools for many years and written a number of Waldorf maths books. The essence of maths is a process of discovery, helping to develop higher thinking that is creative as well as analytical. Maths should teach us life lessons, strengthening character, perseverance, fostering discipline and organisation and learning through mistakes. Maths can be seen as an art and can help to teach us what it is to be human. The teachers had an inspiring three days and we came away with many rich experiences and ideas for future development for our maths teaching in school. As maths remains a focus for us, we are looking at not only further developing maths skills across the school but, importantly, mathematical thinking and an interest and enthusiasm for math- ematics whatever the ability of the child. We are also focusing on our Parent Enrichment Programme this year with a termly evening workshop run by Elizabeth Swanepoel. The first meeting will be “The Essentials of Waldorf Education” which will now be held on Tuesday 27 th March at 7pm. (Please note the change in date from last week’s flier). I would like to bring to your attention another demonstration of environmentally friendly Enjo cleaning products in our hall on Wednesday 21 st February at 3.10pm. We held one at the end of last year which was extremely successful and the school received a set of cleaning cloths for each class and a window cleaning set. As these products require no chemicals or other cleaning products, this fits in with our philosophy of caring for our envi- ronment. Finally I hope all the students that took part in “The Hamilton Weet-bix Kids Tryathlon” enjoyed the event. It was great to see them proudly wearing their t shirts and medals for the day. THE Friday FLIER

KOTAHITANGA

Waikato Waldorf School, Kindergartens and Playcircle

Dear Waikato Waldorf Community

It was wonderful that so many people turned up to our KiVa meetings last week. I hope everyone found them

informative and useful. The aim of the programme is to: reduce bullying; prevent new bullying incidents from

occurring and minimize the negative effects caused by bullying. Classes 3 – 8 will be having a weekly KiVa

session, teaching valuable skills and knowledge, enhancing their social skills and empowering them to make

good choices. Teachers will be informing you of the lesson content so that you can have follow up discussions

at home to reinforce the work we are doing. The KiVa team will be dealing with individual cases of bullying and

parents will be informed of the cases which have been addressed by the team. If need be, the parents can be

invited to the school to discuss the case. However, that is not the standard procedure as the students are first

given the chance to change their behavior. If you become aware of any bullying incidents it is important that

you feed this back to the school. We will be reviewing the progress of this new initiative as we go and welcome

any feedback.

During the summer break teachers went to a three day maths training workshop run by Jamie York at Michael

Park Steiner School in Auckland. Jamie York is an internationally respected Waldorf maths consultant who has

taught in Waldorf schools for many years and written a number of Waldorf maths books. The essence of maths

is a process of discovery, helping to develop higher thinking that is creative as well as analytical. Maths should

teach us life lessons, strengthening character, perseverance, fostering discipline and organisation and learning

through mistakes. Maths can be seen as an art and can help to teach us what it is to be human. The teachers

had an inspiring three days and we came away with many rich experiences and ideas for future development

for our maths teaching in school. As maths remains a focus for us, we are looking at not only further developing

maths skills across the school but, importantly, mathematical thinking and an interest and enthusiasm for math-

ematics whatever the ability of the child.

We are also focusing on our Parent Enrichment Programme this year with a termly evening workshop

run by Elizabeth Swanepoel. The first meeting will be “The Essentials of Waldorf Education” which will

now be held on Tuesday 27th March at 7pm. (Please note the change in date from last week’s flier).

I would like to bring to your attention another demonstration of environmentally friendly Enjo cleaning products

in our hall on Wednesday 21st February at 3.10pm. We held one at the end of last year which was extremely

successful and the school received a set of cleaning cloths for each class and a window cleaning set. As these

products require no chemicals or other cleaning products, this fits in with our philosophy of caring for our envi-

ronment.

Finally I hope all the students that took part in “The Hamilton Weet-bix Kids Tryathlon” enjoyed the event. It

was great to see them proudly wearing their t shirts and medals for the day.

Sunday 11th March 2018, 10am-3pm

Only 4 weeks to go!!

Please like and share our Facebook page. Medieval Carnival – Waikato Waldorf School

Class Stall –

Can you come to school on Saturday to help set up the stall and surrounding area from 10am and/or pack it down at the conclusion of the carnival on Sunday? Let your Class Liaison know.

Are all the time slots in the roster for your class stall(s) filled?

We are working towards making this event ZEROWASTE, we are currently investigating how much of our food re-

lated products we are able to compost, however the first step to dealing with waste is not to make it in the first

place. We ask that our community remember to BYO reusable plates, cutlery, water bottles and keep cups. This is

a timely reminder to us all: What am I currently using for a drink bottle? Is it a plastic bottle designed for single use

or is it time to invest in a long lasting one?

If you’d like to get involved in supporting our Zerowaste initiative contact Claire

on 021 670 017.

We will also have our reusable takeaway coffee cups for sale again at the Carnival, $20 each, however, if

you’d like to order one in advance, please contact Vanessa on [email protected]

Raffle Items – Drop your raffle item donation to one of the collection boxes located at the school & kindergarten offices, at Rimu Cottage, and at Kowhai and Tui Whare. Do you have (or have connections to) a business that is able to donate something for our raffles? Please contact Kiri on 021 225 4742

Entertainment – would you like to perform at the Carnival? Please call or text Greg on 027 459 6275

Food stalls: a) we need helpers for our new Vegan Food stall. Please contact Samantha on 027 449 0422 or email [email protected]

b) if you would be keen to run our new Smoothie Stall please contact Laurene on 021 733 282

c) make your Bakehouse item now and freeze – in order to meet our Zerowaste goals please deliver baked goods to the Bakehouse stall on Sunday morning in named reuseable containers

Do you have a gazebo, trestle table or crock pot that can be borrowed for the day? Please email the PA on [email protected]

Let Vanessa know if you can’t come on Carnival day and need a pre or post Carnival job/task instead!

You can contact the PA via email: [email protected] or you can call/text: Regarding food stalls: Laurene Merritt 021 733 282

FUNDRAISER DEMO

Do you want to eliminate or reduce chemicals in your home? Do you want to spend less time cleaning? Do you want to try something new for allergies, asthma or skin irritations? Do you want to make a difference to the environment? …..and raise some money for

our school at the same time! ENJO is the world leader in chemical-free cleaning technology. Reduce the use of harmful chemicals, protecting your health, the environment for our children and grandchildren and in the process saving time and money. We are currently looking into changing the way we clean at Waikato Waldorf School. We invite you to come and see how this cleaning system works and give you an opportunity to buy some cloths for your own home. 10% of all products purchased will be donated to the school

On Wednesday 21st February at 3.10pm there will be a short demo in the school hall and an opportunity to pur-chase products. This could be a great opportunity to buy those last minute Christmas presents!

Anthroposophical reading group – A warm welcome to all

The reading group will meet this coming Tuesday 13th February to read to the fourth and final chap-ter of The Threefold Social Order. As we read we pause and discuss the content to clarify and identi-fy its meaning and relevance today in our lives and workplaces, and how we can integrate different aspects.

On 27th February we will commence with the first of our three Easter readings from “The Festivals and Their Meaning”.

If you can take time, please join us. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of the month, 7pm at Waikato Waldorf School. If there is a topic of interest for reading please suggest this.

Library of the Anthroposophical Society (Waikato Branch)

Dear school community and friends,

We have a small library of anthroposophical books and other publications held by the Waikato Branch of the Anthroposophical Society. I am the current caretaker and have these publications in a bookshelf at my home in Huntington (two minutes from school). The books include a range of medical, social, spiritual, agricul-tural, educational and human/personal development topics to name a few. There are some Golden Blade jour-nals, some recent publications (such as Taking Charge – Your Life Patterns and Their Meanings, G Burkhard) and a number of classic Steiner texts.

Please drop by and browse and borrow, or contact me to ensure someone is home if you are making a special trip. Members and non-members alike are welcome to use the library. Visits during business hours are prefera-ble, but please phone me if you need to visit earlier or later.
