Message From the Chairs
Welcome to the Hope Ball 2015
“Dedicated to the Ones We Love” The Essence of Commitment
It is a pleasure to be with you tonight for Cancer League of Colorado’s premier fundraising event. You personify the commitment Cancer League members and supporters have to our mission of finding a cure or a means to control cancer. Tonight, we celebrate the dedication of our Cancer League community and our persever-ance to continue to fight cancer, we encourage those who are personally fighting the fight with this disease, and we remember those we lost to the battle that live on in our hearts. As has become a Cancer League tradition, we are also taking time to recognize and honor our Champions of Hope, Barb and Gary Reece. Gary, the organization’s current President, and Barb, serving as our Vice President of Fundraising, have given thousands of hours of their time over the past ten years to significantly advance Cancer League’s mission. They have moved Cancer League into a very strong position in our community and are an example of how the positive impact of caring, and then doing, can create change. It is for these reasons that we take pause. Thank you Barb and Gary. A few of the crowning achievements under their leadership include the creation and funding of the Cancer League of Colorado’s Endowed Chair at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. This commitment expands Cancer League’s dedication to Colorado’s only National
Message From the Chairs, cont. Cancer Institute designated cancer center and provides support that will span generations. Thanks to all of you, we also anticipate here tonight breaking our $1,000,000 annual fund-raising goal for the first time in Cancer League’s history. If you have spent any time with a member of Cancer League, you know that it is a unique organization. With no paid staff (meaning 100% volunteer), each dollar raised goes 100% to support cancer research or related patient services within the state of Colorado. Also, we don’t sit on our money, as virtually all monies raised annually are dispersed in accordance with our mission in the same fiscal period it is raised. Further, every $1.00 funded by Cancer League for research has historically resulted in an additional $20.00 in funding from the National Institutes of Health or other national organizations. Cancer League is at the forefront of the battle against cancer, providing essential “seed” money for innovative ideas, methods and technologies in an effort to find a cure for or a means to control cancer. Cancer League will make a difference in your life. Whether it is a friend or a family member, we cannot escape being touched by cancer. Today, we know a cancer diagnosis is no longer terminal. Today, we all know we can fight. It is the advancement of Cancer League’s mission that has contributed to this new reality. We are a team. We are a community against cancer: volunteers, financial supporters, research scientists, service providers and health orga-nizations. Your participation in Cancer League’s efforts brings you into this community as a member, and we thank you for your caring and doing. Enjoy the night! Celebrate our efforts! Take comfort in knowing we will win! Carol Hansen Gayle Rogers 2015 Hope Ball Co-Chairs Cancer League of Colorado

Champions of Hope Award
Barb and Gary Reece
The Champions of Hope Award was established to honor individuals who have exhibited an extraordinary commit-ment to the fight against cancer through their ongoing support of the mission of Cancer League of Colorado (CLC). This year’s theme for the Hope Ball is “Essence of Commitment”. No two people embody this theme better than Barb and Gary Reece, our 2015 Champions of Hope Award recipients. Like many of us, Barb and Gary found Cancer League when friends and family were fighting cancer. They wanted to get involved in an organization where they could make a significant impact in the effort to find a cure. CLC--100% volunteer, no offices, no paid staff—has benefitted from their tireless dedication for over 10 years. As President for the past five years, Gary has streamlined the CLC organization and taken it to new heights in raising funds for the Colorado-based research and service grants CLC supports. Barb has been involved in all areas of CLC, including serving as its President, though her passion is fundraising. Through her persistence and dedication, she has developed long-lasting and fruitful relationships with CLC supporters. Their philanthropy extends further into the community, as they involve themselves in other caring and worthy organizations, most notably, Families First. In their personal lives, commitment is first and foremost. They have been married for 40 years, and they have two wonderful children, Jenny and Jeff, and six beautiful grandchildren. We are both proud and humbled to have them as members of Cancer League of Colorado. Their commitment truly makes a difference!! Carol Hansen, Gayle Rogers Co-Chairs, 2015 Hope Ball
EMCEE
Murphy Huston
Award Winning Radio Host
Murphy Huston is an award winning radio host who has been broadcasting in Denver since 1986. Starting at KHOW, he has worked the last 20 years at KOSI 101.1 doing their morning show, most recently co-hosting with his partner and friend Denise Plante. In addition, for many years, he did the Colorado Lotto drawings on Channel 4. Murphy is recognized as a warm and friendly guy…. like your neighbor next door. This has proven successful over the years, as he has shared his life and family on the air for all of Denver to get to know. Having been married to his wife Carol for over 43 years, they have raised four grown children. So, now he talks about his seven grandchildren. In the last year, Murphy has stepped back from doing the morning show on KOSI. He was diagnosed with male breast cancer a year ago and, having fully recovered, has decided to slow down a bit, but not completely. He continues to work at KOSI and remains very active in the community, as he has over the years, helping many non-profits with emceeing chores and golf tournaments, and even going “over the edge” of buildings to fight cancer. Now, his focus is more on his family, as well as some golf now and then.

Cancer League of Colorado Foundation
Building a foundation for tomorrow.
Ten years ago, the then president of Cancer League of Colorado (CLC), Carol Hansen, asked several members to transform a long dormant investment account, which held just a few thousand dollars, into a vehicle that could someday support CLC. Thus, the Cancer League of Colorado Foundation was re-energized. Under the leadership of Karen White and, subsequently, Glenna Hale, the Foundation has grown to nearly $1,400,000. This growth can be attributed not only to donations, corporate gifts and bequests from loyal CLC members, but also the prudent investment strategies established by the Foundation Board.
When considering the Foundation in one’s estate plan, something to consider is how it is managed. One of the first steps the Foundation Board took in 2006 was to utilize professional asset management rather than manage these funds ourselves. Currently, UBS Financial Services serves as the Foundation’s financial advisor and portfolio manager. The Foundation Board formed an Investment Committee that works closely with the advisor to ensure the Foundations’ funds are managed in accordance with a detailed Investment Policy Statement (IPS) that provides investment and disbursement guidelines. A copy of the IPS can be found on the CLC website.
The Foundation’s funds are invested in a conservative portfolio that includes a combination of equities and income investments. When the stock market goes up, we may not participate equally in the rise, but when the market goes down, we are somewhat protected from as sharp a decline. So, how have we done with our donors’ contributions? From April of 2010 through calendar year 2014, we experienced annualized returns of over 7%.
With this background information, I encourage tonight’s attendees to consider the Cancer League of Colorado Foundation as a component of your estate planning in whatever way works best for you. As a donor to the Foundation, you will be included in the growing list of benefactors of our Endowment of Hope (no specific numbers are ever used and you may choose to participate anonymously). The Endowment of Hope is recognized at various CLC events, such as tonight’s Hope Ball, and is included on the CLC website. For further information on the Cancer League of Colorado Foundation, please contact us. Thank You! David Weisberg, President, and Board of Directors Cancer League of Colorado Foundation

We want to thank all
Cancer League volunteers
for your many years of work
searching to find the ultimate cure for cancer!
Together, we are all Champions of Hope!
Participate in the 19th Annual Race For Research on Sunday August 16th in lovely Washington Park and help us fight cancer. You can run or walk the 5K or walk the Miracle Mile.
Following the race, we will have a Family Festival and Sponsor Expo that will include a pancake breakfast, a beer garden, a live band, a prize drawing, kids fun run, face painting, games for the kids, and food and sports vendor booths. There is fun for everyone! Honor a loved one who has been touched by cancer. Imagine an 18” x 24” poster of your loved one along the path of our Miracle Mile.
How? Make a $150 donation or an equal amount in fundraisings for Race For Research no later than August 1. Go to www.cancerleague.org for registration and information. Questions? Contact Lin McHaley. [email protected]
