wisdomandvitalityofyouth,thetorchbearersofthefutureofmankind.Thereareespeciallywide-rangingmissions

for agricultural students, as agricultural scienceplays akey role in the solution of fundamental problems in food

productionandsafety,environmentalconservation,energy,andhumanhealth.Thesystemof foodproductionand

consumption iswithoutadoubtcloselyrelatedtotheconditionofthenaturalenvironment,thestageofeconomic

development,andfoodcultureineachcountry,andtheirpatternsandproblemsreflectregionalcharacteristics.Itis

thusimportanttounderstandhowagricultureandfoodsystemsshouldbeorganizedandmaintainedineachsociety.

TokyoUniversityofAgriculture(TokyoNODAI)organizedthe“InternationalStudentsSummit(ISS)onFood,

AgricultureandEnvironment”toprovidestudentsfromourglobalpartneruniversitieswithanopportunitytogather

andexchangeviewsandideasonglobalfood,agricultural,andenvironmentalissues,andalsotodiscusstheirown

rolesinsustainabledevelopment.

Thisyear,the19thISSwillbeheldonSeptember16-22,2019atTokyoNODAI(Setagayacampus).Thetheme

forthissummitis“YouthTransformingThoughtsonSustainableAgricultureandResourceManagementtoConnect

LocalandGlobalCommunity”,whichwasadoptedatthe18thISS.Wehopetheparticipatingstudentstofocuson

their activities undertaken at each university in their presentations and discussions. The framework of student

activityastotherationale,methods,implications(economic,socialandcultural),andconstraintsshouldbeclarified

inordertofostertheircontributionstothesolutionofglobalproblemsforthesustainabilityofthisworld.

Rethinking the Rural Economic Development

Therealthing isthatthis isnotatinyproblem, itcoversmanyareasofthesociety’senvironment.Ruraldevelopmentpoliciesarenotbeingaseffectiveassocietydemands,that’swhy it is pertinent to rethink rural development models as well as their effectiveimplementation.Itmustbeensuredaminimumlevelofopportunitiesforallthepeople. Iwilltalkaboutruraldevelopmentunderacomprehensiveperspective,inonewherewecantalkaboutthematchofdigitalizationofagriculture,theimpactsofsexisminruralareas,theurgencytochangetheparadigmofthepublicbudgettobegintogivegreaterweighttoinvestmentinpublicgoodsandnotsomuchinprivateones,therelayofoldergenerationsinthefoodproductionchains,etcetera. Thenumberofpeoplelivinginextremepovertystandsat836million.(WorldBank,2018) Wemuststopthinkingaboutthemicroandmovealsotothemacro issues,theIFADestimates that three-quarters of the extremely poor and food-insecure people live in ruralregions,thistopicwillbedevelopedundertheideaoftherelevanceofre-encouragingasystemofacooperativeeconomyasanalternativeforsocialcoercion inruralregionsandatool foreconomicstrengtheningofthesecommunitiesagainstsomevoraciousmarketagents,butalsowillbeatalkaboutwhatcancooperativesdowithtradeandtheirbuying-suppliesissuesandhowcanthisimproveruralcommunities. Forthistalk,Iwillusemyexperienceinthesefields,Iwillgetindetailsaboutthe4Smodelweimplementedduringayearwithruralfamiliesinthreedifferentmexicanregionsandabouthowourparadigmchangedwhenwemeasuredtheimpactsgeneratedspecificallywithchildren;whichweremuchmoresignificantthanthoseobtainedwithadults. Youthcan(andshould)beinvolvedintheprogressoftheruraleconomy,Iamconvincedthat the best way to do this is through the transfer of knowledge; agriculture has beenabandonedformanyyearsandtheknowledgegeneratedintheuniversityclassroomshasnotreachedthepeoplelivingintheagri-foodsectorsuccessfully. Therearelargeareasofopportunityforentrepreneurshipandtheapplicationoftalentintheworld’s foodproduction; from the applications of data analysis, such as the creation andreproductionof technology,andsoon.That iswhyIwill talkaboutsomesuccessstoriesofventuresthathavehelpedtheprogressoftheruraleconomyinMexico. Iwillfocusduringthispresentationontheimpactswecanobtaininthestruggleforthefightagainstpoverty,understandingitasastructuralproblemthatneedsstructuralandcross-cuttingsolutionsnotonlytotheproductionissues,butalsointherelevanceofapoliticalagendathatattacksareaslikeeducation,inequality,gendergapandprogressivepolicies.

About30%ofJapanesefarmersareover65-year-old,andin2018theaverageoffarmersage was over 66-year-old.the farming population is decreasing and aging of farmers willcontinue.Thus,farmeragingisoneofthemostimportantprobleminJapaneseagriculture. ToaddressthisproblemISF-japanstudentsstartedStudentTakingActionthatwecallSTA in Ikumi area. Ikumi area is in ShimadaCity,which is located in ShizuokaPrefecture.Mainproductionintheareaisagricultureandforestry.Thisareaisanexampleoftheproblemofdecreasingpopulationandagingoffarmers.Toraiseawarenesstoincreasemigrationtothearea,aprojectdevelopingnewproductmighthelptomakeIkumibetterknown. Whenwedecidedtointroduceanewproduct,webyshareinformationobtainedatourschoolfestival.Westartedtosaleproductsince2010.Theseproductsarepopularatourschoolfestival;thereforewecanprovideadvice,thatwehavereceivedfromourconsumers.Toshareconsumer’sopiniontofarmersinIkumi, itasdecidedto incorporatetheconsumeropiniontocreateanewproduct. Ikumiisfamousforgreentea.Wedecidedtodevelopanewproductofgreentea.Wetalkedwithfarmersandnewproductwasborn.Wenamedit“Ikuminchi-cha”.Greenteacanharvest4 timesayear.Thepricedependsonwhen it isharvested.The lowestprice tea isharvested inautumn. Ikuminchi-chausesautumngreen tea to raise farmer’s income. ItwasdecidedtosellIkuminchi-chainteapacksinsteadoftealeaves,asmanycustomersinformedus“teapacksareeasytodrinkbetterthantealeaves.”Ournewproducthasbeensoldouteveryyear. Ikuminchi-chahastwoproblems.ThefirstproblemisproductionofIkuminchi-chacan’tcatchuptodemand.Thesecondproblemiswecansellonlythreedaysonceayear.So,itwasdecidedtoincreaseeffectiveinraisingawareness. Andtoputemphasisonmarketing.WecreatedanInstagramaccountforpublicrelationsin2018.Andwewilldistributeleafletsatnextourschoolfestival. Gettinginterestedintheareathroughourproductsandknowingtheareathroughtheleafletisimportantinrisingawareness.Wethinkitisincreasingimmigrationanddecreasingtheagingtrend.AsmanypeoplevisitIkumi.

Contribution of Scholars and Students from CAU in Practicing Sustainable “Nested Market”

Nowadays, how to guarantee food safety from the source meanwhile ensuring theprofitabilityofproducershasbecomeoneofthemostimportantproblemsinthefoodindustrythroughouttheworld.Toaddressthis,scholarsandstudentsinChinahavethoughtofhowtocombine predominant form of smallholder farming with utilizing resources sustainably tosupplybetter food,whilemakingsmallholdersbecomemorecompetitive in the foodmarket.ProfessorJingZhongYeinChinaAgriculturalUniversity(CAU)hascomeupwithaconceptcalled“NestedMarket”whichprovidesanopportunitytobridgesmallholdersandconsumersinthe supply chain. Nested Market focuses on producing food sustainably by using existingtechniquesavailablefarmingresourcesbasedontherawmaterialsandfarmingtechniquestheyhave in small and variable scales. In 2010, 12 students from College of Humanities andDevelopment Studies ofCAUhave discussed about a plan of experimentingNestedMarketbefore they implemented it in SangGang, a remote village in HeBei Province. They theninstructedfarmerstopromotetheirproductsthroughE-commercemeanwhilealsousedtheirown social networks in the city tohelpgather over 1000 consumers into thenest. Studentsbridged both sides also by letting them meet in person. Producers could get hands-onknowledgetoimprovethequalitiestomeettheneedfromconsumers,andover80%producershavereducedusingpesticideinfarmingtoprovidesaferproductsaccordingtojournalistMaYuPingfromChinaYouthNews.Until2018,96.2%ofsmallholdersinSangGanghavegotridofpovertybyearningmorethan10thousandRMBannually.Astheprogramexpands,studentsfromCollegeofFoodScienceandNutritionalEngineeringwilljointhenestandhelpproducersto enhance the traditional food process techniques with modern technology, also providenutritionalvalueevaluationandhazardousmaterialssuchaspesticidestestingonagri-productsforconsumers.As thepriceofagri-productsare30%-60%higher than invillagemarketandmuchlowerthaninthecity,farmerscouldprofitmoreandconsumerscouldgethigherqualityproduces with lower prices. The success in alleviating poverty attracted the attention ofgovernmentwhichgavemore technical andfinancial supports.Thismodelhasalreadybeenappliedsuccessfully inothervillages inChina.It issustainableandcanbeadoptedwidely indifferentregionsintheworld.

Thepurpose of this study is to inspire local youths, herders, and slaughter houses inrecyclingofanimalby-productinordertopreventfurtherenvironmentalpollutionbycreatinganewopportunityofbusinessandemploymenttotheunemployedlocals. Accordingtostatisticsfrom2018,Dornodprovincehad2.3millionlivestockanditconsistsof Sheep(48.2%), Goat(28.2%), Cow(10.2%), Horse(13.1%) and Camel(0.3%). Dornodprovinceslaughtersaround300thousandlivestockannually.Around43% -50%ofliveweightoflivestockarebeingabandonedasanimalby-product. TherearefourmainslaughterhousesintheProvince.Daily6.1tonnes(annually1685.6tonnes)ofbonesarebeingwastedattheslaughterhousesandsentdirectlytothelocallandfill.Thereisnorenderingfacilitytorecyclethebones.Therefore,thiscausesthebonestodecay,whichprovidesafavorableenvironmenttoharmfuldiseasesandpollutestheenvironment. Inordertomakethisprojecteffective,wehaveeducatedthelocalunemployedyouthsandformedagroupofyouthtoworkonthisproject.Thepurposeofthegroupistoinformthelocalresidencesabouttheopportunitiesofrenderingbusinessintheprovinceandthethreattothepublichealth. The agreement between the group and local government has been made tosupportthelocalswhomareinspiredtostartarenderingbusiness. In Mongolian rural areas, local people’s quality of life is lower and have higherunemployment rate. Because of these problems numerous young people leave countryside.Consequently, it leaves the countrysideuninhabited andbecomes a serious consideration forextinctionoftraditionalnomadiccultureofMongolia.Byfulfillingthisproject,avastnumberoftraditionalnomadicherderswillhaveanideaofanewprofitableopportunitybysellingtheirwasteandprotectingtheenvironmentfrompollutionatthesametime.Furthermore,youth’smovementtowardurbanareaswilldecreasebyensuringtheirqualityoflife. Whentheprojectisputintoeffect,environmentalpollutionandpublichealthproblemswilldecreaseduetorenderinganimalwastebones.Becauserenderedbonemealcanconstitutemixed ration feed to livestock, herderswill get access to ahealthier andnutritious feed fortheir livestock, thus decreasing the loss of livestock in the harshwinters.This has a directimpactonmeatpricesandtheherder’squalityoflife. Byadaptingrenderingtechnologythatiscommongloballybuthasnotyetbeendevelopedin Mongolia, we are confident that it will bring a positive impact to our agriculturalsustainability.

Farming is aprofessionofhopeand reflects thedoubtofuncertainties in agriculture.Theseuncertaintiesarebothnaturalvis-à-vismanmade.InIndia,Agricultureemploysabout50percentofnationworkforceandprovidelivelihoodformajorityofpopulation.Inaddition,foodaccountsalmosthalfofhouseholdexpenditure,whichactsasvitalcomponentofinflation.India is caught between national demand of food at an affordable price and generatingnecessaryincometoprovidebasicamenitiesformajorityofitspopulation.Keepingthisinview,sustainability in agriculture through resource conservation technology is the most pertinentsolutiontosubduethisstint[1].Globally,theemergingchallengesinagriculturearealsoduetoexcessiveexploitationoffreshwaterinagricultureasirrigation,impoverishedsoil,reductioninlandholdings,climateetc.Spearheadingforsmartfarmingthroughwatermanagement,soilmanagement,integratedfarmingsystem(IFS),smallfarmmechanization,integratednutrientmanagement(INM),climatesmartcropping is the immediateneedof thehour.Besides, thedisposal of paddy residue is the major challenge among agrarians. Hence, paddy residuemanagementisofanotherutmostimportanceasitcontainsnutrientsandimprovessoil-plant-atmospheric continuum.Theamount of residuegeneration shouldbe accessed, itsutilizationin-situandex-situ,emphasizeharmfuleffectsofresidueburningonhumanhealth,soilhealthand environment. The agricultural waste opens vivid options for its versatile usage and ispossibleifresidueiscollectedandmanagedproperly[2].Integratedfarmingsystemshouldbefollowedwithproperplanningandconservationagricultureneedstobepracticed,asthroughzero tillage,mulching, stubblemanagement,whichwill increase theyieldwith sustainability.Farmershavetoadoptclimatesmartcropping.Smartfarmingtechniqueswillpavethewayofdevelopmentwithinfarmunit.Youthaspivot,enticesustainabilityvis-à-visfoodsecurity.Theeducation system of agriculture in India includes the program of rural agricultural workexperience(RAWE)andexperimental learningprogrammesduringundergraduation,whichhelptheyouthstorendertheirservicestofarmersandgetacquaintedwiththeirchallenges.The various startups initiated by the youth that gives direct connectivity of farmers toconsumers,ensurebetter incomefor famers,employmentgenerationandconsumersatiation.Thelevelofsustainabilitythuscanbeenhancedwithinclusiveefforts.

Solar Pump Monitor to Improve Sustainability of Renewable Energy for Smallholder Farmers in Nicaragua

Climate change exacerbates poverty and natural resource degradation globally. Sincesmallholder farmers are among the most susceptible to the effects of climate change, it isessential to support the adaptive capacity of their communities and livelihoods. 90% ofNicaraguanfarmersrelysolelyonraintowatercrops,butdroughts,floods,andunpredictableweather are becoming/increasingly common due to climate change, which is directlydetrimentaltothecropyieldsandlivelihoodsofNicaraguanfarmers. ENICALSAisanorganizationthatprovidessolarpumpirrigationsystemstosmallholderfarmersinNicaragua.ENICALSAhasidentifiedthatamonitoringdevicewith3Gconnectionattached to farmers’ irrigation systems would expedite repairs and thereby reduce pumpdowntime, which is beneficial for farmers. UBC Sustaingineering has partnered withENICALSAtodevelopareliable,low-costmonitoringdevicethatcanbeeasilyretrofittedontoexistingfarmers’solarpumpirrigationsystems.Thedevicealsohasthepotentialtomonitorfactorsincludingtemperatureandhumiditywhichcaninformfarmers’managementdecisionssuch as planting dates and irrigation regimes. Whereas the retail price of an equivalentmonitoringdeviceexceedsC$915,thedevicedesignedbyUBCSustaingineeringcostslessthan$30toproduce. ENICALSAandUBCSustaingineeringhaveconductedan impactanalysis, taking intoaccount environmental, social, and economic sustainability metrics to determine if the solarpumpmonitoringdevicewillenhancethesustainabilityofNicaraguanagriculture.Qualitativeandquantitativedatawerecollectedin2016/2017throughon-farminterviewswith30farmerswho received solar pump irrigation systems. Overall, solar pump installation improvedhouseholdincome,thoughtheeconomicbenefitvariedbetweenhouseholds.

Community Farm Park in China

Sincethereformandopeningup,China’seconomyhasdevelopedrapidly,urbanizationisaccelerating,andthe levelofurbanization isconstantly improving.However,it isbecausetheexcessivedevelopmentofurbanizationandthehighdensityofcitydwellersthathaveledtoasharpeningcontradictionbetweenconstructionlandandgreenland.Thereductionofgreenlandhasmadethe livingenvironmentof theresidentsworse.What ismore,high-levelurbanizationdevelopmenthasledtotheadjustmentofthefoodconsumptionpatternsofresidents,andthequalityrequirementsforfoodhavegraduallyimproved. In order to gradually improve the current situation,many communities havebegun tocreatecommunityfarmpark,whichmeansbringingagriculturetocities.Communityfarmparkcanbeusedtocultivateflowers,vegetables,andsoontopromotecommunitydevelopment.Itcanalsobeaspacesharedbycommunityresidents. Ontheecologicallevel,the“sustainable”designconceptandsomeecologicaltechnologiesused in community farms, such as garbage sorting and recycling, rainwater harvesting andutilization,andkitchenwastecomposting,havestrongpracticaloperability. Asfarasthesociallevelisconcerned,thelocationofsharedcommunityfarmsismostlyurban idle land,and it isoftenneglected inmanagementandtheenvironment isdirty.Intheprocess, the land vitality of these idle plots can be restored, providing an environment fornearby residents to communicate, learn from each other and share together, improve theenvironmentalqualityofnearbycommunitiesandenhancecommunitycohesion. Teenagers are also willing to participate in community farm park because of theircuriosity. College studentswill form small teams and come to the community to popularizeknowledgeaboutplantsandcrops, especially students fromBeijingForestryUniversity,willusetheirprofessionalknowledgetoeducatepeopleinthecommunityaboutfarmplantscience.In addition, teenagerswill also help the community to organize someexhibitionsduring theholidays,andplantplantsorcropsinthefarms,whichcanbedisplayedmorevividly.Whatismore, the community also organizes a variety of parent-child activities, so that children canexperience the joy of planting flowers and trees ,which they can be closer to nature.Thecreationofcommunityfarmparkallowsteenagerstoexperienceself-sufficiencyandapreciouspastoralfarmingexperience.Itistogotoworkinpersontounderstandthatfoodisnoteasytoget and teenagers can also develop the ability to innovate in labor.In addition,by planting,maintainingflowersandplants,italsoenablesteenagerstoraiseawarenessofresponsibilityandenvironmentalprotection.Asa result, theycangradually cultivate thegreat faithofbuildingbeautifulChinafromtheconstructionofsmallhomes. VNUA Youth Embark on Finding the Potential Application of Bioactive Compounds Derived from Streptomyces as Bactericidal Agents against Pathogenic Bacteria

Pleurotus ostreatusbelongstothegenusPleurotuswhichiswidelyconsumedall over the worldbecauseofitsflavor,tasteandhighnutritionalvalue(NguyenHuuDongetal.,2002)andsome medicinal properties used in cardiovascular treatment(Cao Xuan Thu, 2000). Thismushroom was reported to have the Mevinolin- anti-cancer(Demain AL, Sanchez S., 2009).Currently, Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the main sources of income for many regions inVietnam, accounting for about 70% of the country’s output and enhancing the sustainableagriculturaldevelopment(NguyenNhuHien&PhamVanDu,2013). However,P. ostreatushassufferredthediseasecausebyH10strainfromBacillusgenus,withthesymptomsofyellowmucusbeneaththefruitingbodyandthenspreadingtotheupperbodyleadtoshrunkanddry.Fruitingbodiescontainalotofyellowbrownspotsthenbeingrot

(Nguyen Huu Dong et al.,2002). It has detrimental impact on their quality and yield of P.ostreatus.Currently, using chemical drugs as a treatment make endanger for global people health, lead to environmental pollution and reduce significantly sustainable development in Agriculture. Streptomycesisknownasagroupofprokaryotesdistributedwidelyinnatureandcapableofantibiotics production(NgoDinhQuangBinh, 2005).The use of Streptomyces to inhibitpathogenic bacteria is considered as an effective and eco-friendly method of environment.Understanding this issue, we carried out the experiment “Vietnamese Youth embark on finding the potential application of bioactive compounds derived from Streptomyces as bactericidal agents against pathogenic bacteria on Pleurotus ostreatus”. The purpose of this experiment is 1. Student launch the research activities usingStreptomyces to create bio-active compounds to prevent pathogenic disease, 2. Assess theimpact of the product on the environment, 3. Select households to grow P. ostreatus toimplement the project, 4. Students action on direct instruction of households, 5. Developorientationandfuturesustainabilityandaactionplanfortheshortandlongterm. This project is participated by different organizations(Bio-scientific research club- anofficialclubofVietnamNationalUniversityofAgriculture,MushroomResearchInstituteand2studentresearchgroupsandover20peoplerelated.

Soil Fertility and Soil Organic Carbon in Cassava-based Cropping System under Conservation Agriculture

InCambodia, 43%of total land area is degraded causing the reduction of arable landproductivityanddisruptsustainedagriculturalproductivityandfoodsecurity(Baietal.,2008).Conventional tillage(CT)causes soil degradation, the loss of soil organic carbon(SOC), thedecrease in soil fertility, the loss of biodiversity and leads to the decrease in crop yield

(Akowuah,2012),whereasconservationagriculture(CA), includingminimumorzero-tillage,croprotationorintercroppingandpermanentsoilcover, isasetofmanagementpracticestoreversethosenegativeimpactsfromCT(Naabetal.,2017).Thus,theaimofthisstudywastoassess the impactsofconservationagriculturepracticesonsoil fertilityandSOC incassava-based cropping system. The experiment was conducted in Mollisols soil in BattambangProvince and initiated in 2010.This experiment consisted of 4 treatments including(i)CA1

(Millet+Crotalaria Juncearotatedwithmaize+mungbeanwithno-till),(ii)CA2(Cassavawithchiselplow)rotatedincroppatternannually,(iii)CT1cultivatedcassavaunderplowandridgeand(iv)CT2farmer’splotcultivatedcassavatraditionally.Soilsampleswerecollectedin2017at three depths(0-5, 5-10 and 10-20cm). At the depth 0-5 cm, the result indicated thatpermanganateoxidizablecarbon(POXC)andSOCwerehigherinbothCAtreatmentsat1.28gkg-1and28.85gkg-1respectively.CationExchangeCapacity(CEC)wasincreasedinCA1andCT1 but decreased in CA2 and CT4. At depth 5-10 cm, the least amount of POXC wasrecordedinCTtreatmentsby1.03gkg-1incontrasttotheCAwherethetopnumberwereshownby1.15gkg-1.SoilStableAggregate(SSA)of5-10cmdepthwereatthehighestnumberof771.77gkg -1 inCA1,whereas theother treatmentswerestatistically lower.ThehighesttotalN(TN)wereshowninCA2at5-20cmdepthby1.32gNkg -1,bycontrast,thelowestnumberwere fromCT2by0.63gkg -1.AvailableP(AP)were foundnon-significantat0-10depth, while higher numbers were from CA2 and CT2. In conclusion, CA increased POXC,SOC,CEC,SSA,TNandAPhigherascomparedwithCTsinceCApracticesremainresidueonsoildecreasingsoilerosionandaccumulatingsoilorganiccarbonandincreasenitrogenfixationfromlegumecroprotation.

The Carajás National Forest(CNF)is a Brazilian Amazon protected area created toprotectanextremelyendemicenvironmentofAmazonecosystems.Theoccurrenceofinvasivespecies shows a great socioeconomic and environmental impact as the damages caused byglobal climate change(LEVINE & D’ANTONIO, 1999). Biological invasions threatenbiodiversityconservationandnaturalecosystems,astheycompetewithnativespecies,modifycommunitydynamicsandchangehabitats(VITOUSEKetal., 1997).Several countriesadoptinvasiveexoticplantcontrol.ThereislittleinformationaboutexoticplantcontroltechniquesinAmazonregion.ThisworkaimedtoevaluateintegratedcontrolofexoticinvasivegrassintheCNF.Theexperimentwasinstalledinanareaof800m2insideCNF,showingahighinfestationofinvasivegrassUrochloa decumbens.Theareawasdividedintoeightblocks(10x10meach):1. Mechanical weeding(MW); 2. MW + seed mix(SM); 3. MW + SM + planting of treeseedlings(PTS);4.Herbicide(H);5.H+SM;6.H+SM+PTS;7.MW+H+SM+PTS;and,8 . Control. SM was composed by: Crotalaria spectabilis, Cassia fastuosa, Bauhinia longipedicellata, Mimosa acutistipulaandSolanum crinitum.Seedlingswereplantedeach2mand were constituted by Anadenanthera colubrina, Swietenia macrophylla, Inga edulis, Dalbergia latifolia and Bixa orellana. Twelve months after installation of the experiment, asquareinventoryof0.5x0.5mwasrecordedfor10timesineachblock.Densityanddrymassofexoticplantsweremeasured.Thelowestexoticgrassdensityanddrymasswereobservedontreatments6and7,differingfromalltreatments.Itmaybeduetothelesserresurgenceofinvasive species by the action of mechanical weeding, shade and herbicide application.Mechanical weeding and herbicide application may reduce the reserves of exotic grasspropagules.Shadeandnativeplantcompetitionmayreduceexoticinvasivegrassgrowing.Theintegrated control may decrease the amounts and ecological impacts of herbicide in theenvironment.Besides,treeseedlingsandseedmixstrategieshelpedtorepopulatetheareawithnativeplantspecies.Thesetwotypesofmanagementsmaybeappliedinanypartoftheworld;however, it is necessary to use local native plants species as a component to integratedmanagement of exotic plants.Theymay also be used for both degraded area recovery andagriculture.

During the event, we visited several benchmarkenterprisestoconducton-sitefieldvisitsexploringsustainabilitydimensionsandalsoourownselectedsitestoexploreTaiwan’ssustainabilitydimensions.Iwasresponsibleforconstructingideas, contacting local people, making video and final presentation. It was a great eventassociated with sustainability and connect global and local community that I would like toshare.Werealizedhowimportantitistoconnectlocalandglobalcommunityinthisevent.Iguided the international students to explore Taiwan’s sustainability dimensions. They wereamazed and convinced these ideaswould be great to implement in their countries. In total,therewerestudents frommorethan10differentcountries intheeventandvisiteddifferentcitiesandvillagesinTaiwaninthisprogram.Internationalstudentsandlocalswereconnectedtoinspirecreativityandthoughts.Wevisitedfoodsurpluskitchen,1919foodbank,Wen-Xiancommunity and Trash amusement park, which are related to sustainable agriculture, foodsecurity,wastemanagement and rural development.Mr.Lin at 1919 foodbank collaboratedwithaNGOinJordanthroughusingblacksoliderflyasfoodwastemanagementsystem,whichsupportedtheSDGsofnopovertyandzerohunger.Alocalpetstoreownerinfluencedothercatownerstocompostthecatsandaspartofno-wastevegetableproductionsystem,whichisagreatstoryabouttheSDGsofresponsibleconsumptionandproduction.EdiblefoodthatwouldbeawasteafterthemarketclosedwerecollectedbyHuameisurplusrestaurantfromvenderstoprovidefoodforpeopleinneedinthecommunity,whichimprovedthesustainabilityofthecommunityandreducehunger.Trashamusementparknotonlymakesorganiccompostfromfoodwaste for the farmers,butalsoprovidesenvironmentaleducation to thecitizens,whichhelpedmakeTaichungcitysustainable.WecanexpandtheseideasofsustainabilityinfoodandagriculturenotonlyinTaiwan,butalsoothercountries.

TheIndianagriculturalsectorcontributiontoGDPhasdwindledto15.4%(2017),whichis still higher than world’s average(6.4%)[1]. India is the second largest producer ofagricultural production, amounting to 12% of world’s agricultural production. Severalconstraints viz. dominance of small and marginal land holdings(85%), limited land andinfrastructure, improper credit facilities, lack of timely supply of agricultural inputs besidesresearch and marketing facilities, absence of desired extension activities, lack of improperimplementationofpoliciesandprograms,evergrowingIndianpopulation,erraticandunevendistributionofrainfallanduncertaintyinagricultureadverselyaffectfarmer’sincome.By2050,with the global population expected to reach 9.8 billion, our food supplieswill be under fargreaterstressandwillneed60-70%moreagriculturalproducetomeetfooddemands[2].Foodsecurity in Indiacouldbeensuredby increasingproductivity,decreasingpost-harvest losses,reliablebulkandcoldchainstoragesystem,foodprocessingandopportunitiesforvalueaddedproducts.ResourceConservationTechnology,resourcerecycling,integratedpestandnutrientmanagement, integratedfarmingsystemandtheirmanagementisanurgentneedtoachievesustainabledevelopmentgoals.Suchmoderndayconceptsaretheeffectivewaysforgeneratingincomeasthesetechniquesledtomaintenanceofsoilfertilityandplantnutrientsupplytoanoptimumlevelwhichcaneasilybeadoptedbytheyouth.Urbanization,industrialization,climatechangeandstubbleburninghaveledtoenvironmentaldegradation issues.Insects,pathogensand weeds have made chemical pesticides an integral part of crop production. Youths areaware of the fact that to safeguard their own future, these hazardous pesticides should bereplacedby integratedpestmanagement.Theyoung Indian farmers are indigitizingphase,whichareactivelyforminggroupsonsocialnetworkingsitestoexchangethelatestavailabletechnology and are adopting smart and profitable agriculture. Innopreneurship(innovation+entrepreneurship)abilities are gradually being inculcated in Indian farmers to promotesustainable agriculture. The challenges could be overcome by educating youth, improvingextension activities and adding agriculture in high school course curriculum. VariousExperientialLearningProgramsandAgriBusinessIncubationCentresarealsoneededtobesetuptoencouragethestudentstoexploreinnovativeideas.DuetothesincereeffortsofGovt.through Public Private Partnership and skill development entrepreneurship have paced up.Youth have the capability to think of agriculture as a business and profession. Agricultureasthekeyeconomicactivityinruralareasaccountsformorethanhalfofthecountry’s incomegeneration, supports livelihoods ofmore than 80 percent of the population,contributesabout29percentofGDP,30percentofexportearnings,65percentofinputstotheindustrialsectorandemploysabout75percentofthetotallabourforce.Notwithstandingitsmajorcontributiontothesocio-economicdevelopmentofTanzania,itishighlydominatedbytheagingpopulation,whileaccordingtotheTanzanianpopulationandhousingcensusof2012about67%(15,587,621individuals)oflabourforcecomprisesyouthsagedbetween15and35years1andmostlyunemployed.TheGovernmentoftheUnitedRepublicofTanzaniahavingrealizedthelow involvement of youths in agriculture for various reasons, has come up with differentinitiatives(e.g.NationalStrategyforYouthInvolvementinAgriculture2016-2021andNationalEmployment Creation Programme 2006 – 2010)in order to promote youth involvement insustainableagricultureincludingresourcemanagement. In order to complement efforts made by the Government of the United Republic ofTanzania, Sokoine University of Agriculture students have been involving themselves insustainable agriculture activities in collaboration with the NGO known as SustainableAgricultureTanzaniaanorganizationthatwasregisteredinJune2011.SATemergedfromasister NGO known as “BUSTANI YA TUSHIKAMANE” that had practiced sustainableagriculture foracoupleofyears inMorogoro.Additionally, thereareabout74similarNGOsunderTanzaniaNationalNGOCoordinationsuchasMorogoroYouthAgribusinessFoundation,ANSAF, AMSHA Institute, TOMOKO Farms and the Sokoine University GraduateEntrepreneursCooperative(SUGECO).SATlikeotherNGOsthattargetyouthhasprovidedSUAstudentswithaplatformforrenewed interest inagriculture throughdialogue,debates,action-researchanddisseminationthathaveprovidedthemwithanopportunitytoreflecttheirthoughts and carry out their activities hovered around sustainable agriculture and resourcemanagement. Readiness and Level of Implementation of Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil(MSPO)among Palm Oil Smallholders

Palm oil is a major agricultural commodity and the biggest contributor to Malaysianagriculture’sGrossDomesticProduct(GDP).Around3.6%outof7.8%ofagricultureGDP iscontributedbypalmoil.Malaysia is the second largest palmoil exporter in theworld afterIndonesia,andfulfilledalmost40%oftheworld’soilconsumption.TheEuropeanUnion(EU)countries are the second significant importer of Malaysian palm oil after India. However,Amsterdam declaration in 2015 that the EU will ban unsustainable palm oil by 2020. TheAmsterdamdeclarationposedthreattotheMalaysianpalmoilindustry.Thereasongiveninbanningunsustainable palmoil is becauseEUclaimed that palmoil is causingdeforestationwhichleadstoclimatechangeandcreatingalotofenvironmentalissues.Thisdecisionnotonlywillaffectthecountry’sincomebutalsowillaffectthepalmoilsectorsalongthesupplychainespeciallythesmallholderpalmoilestates.Nevertheless,MalaysianPrimeMinisterpromisedthat“everysingledropofourpalmoilwillbesustainable”indicatingthatthegovernmenthaspledgedtoproduce100%sustainablepalmoilbytheyear2019throughMalaysianSustainablePalmOil(MSPO)CertificationScheme.MSPOCertificationSchemeistoensurethatallpalmoilproducersaretofollowcertainproceduresandstandardsinpalmoilplantingmanagementandoilpalmproduction.Otherwise,EUwillbanunsustainablepalmoilandconsumeothertypesofoils suchas soybeanandrapeseedoil.Thus inorder toensure that theoilpalm industry isreadytoimplementMSPO,UniversitiPutraMalaysiaisembarkinginastudytomeasurethesmallholders’ intention to fully implementMSPO. Inorder tounderstandand to capture thereadinessofoilpalmsmallholders’ involvement inMSPOscheme,UniversitiPutraMalaysia’s

(UPM)students carried out a survey among the smallholders to gauge their intention toparticipate intheMSPOprogramtoensureallpalmoilproducedbyMalaysia issustainable.The involved students are from the Faculty of Agriculture. Structured questionnaire wasdevelopedunderthesupervisionofoneofthelecturers.Tengroupsofstudentsconsistingfivepeoplepergroupwasassignedto20smallholderstofindoutthecurrentmanagementpracticesby the oil palm smallholders and a concurrent advisory service will be rendered by thestudentsifthepracticeswerenotinlinewiththeMSPOprocedureorguidelines.Someofthefindingsthatwereverypertinentregardingtheoilpalmmanagementbythesmallholdersweretheopenburningandexcessiveuseofpesticides andherbicides.Thusademonstrationwasconductedby agriculture students the next day to all smallholders on how tomanage theirfarm in a proper way so as to reflect the sustainability of palm oil production. Thedemonstrations conducted were to do proper pruning of old frond and on how to useinsecticidesandpesticidesaccordinglyinordertoproducesustainableoilpalmproduction.

Status of GAP in Myanmar Sustainable Agriculture

SustainableagricultureinMyanmarispioneeredbyalargepopulationofsmall-scaleruralfarmers.Approximately70percentofthecountry’spopulationdependsonagricultureforfoodandincome(ADB,2013).AccordingtoMyanmarisdiverseintopographyanddifferentclimaticconditions; it is favorable for growing over 100 varieties of vegetables in Myanmar(MoAI,2012). Nowadays, Myanmar people will face a problem of unsafely vegetables in the localmarketandgoodagriculturalpractice(GAP)isoneofthesolutionsforsustainableagriculturedevelopmentinMyanmar.ThemainlypurposeofGAPistoimprovethequalityofagriculturalproduces and safety aspects. The objective of this study is to observe status of GAP invegetable production with safety aspect and nutrition of consumers. The study site wasoutskirt of Yangon region and value chain through producers, brokers, sellers from localmarkets, consumers nearby production places. Review of literature and other relevantdocumentstogetanoverviewoffoodsafetyissuesinvegetablesproductioninstudyareasofMyanmar, that were not directly covered by methodology. Collecting information werefarmpractices,utilizingofagro-chemicalaccordingtotheinstructionofDoA,useofcompost,harvesttimeofvegetableswithGAPguideline,harvest system,post-harvesthandlingpreparation tomarket, grading, washing, use of good water, packaging practices, transportation system,traditionalsellingsystemandtemporarystoragesystem.Inthisstudy,threetypesofmarketsystemwereobservedbydirectlyproducers toconsumers, throughbrokersandretailers toconsumers and throughbrokers,wholesalers and retailers toconsumers. It is suggested thatsmallfarmholdersshouldfollowGAPguidelinewithsafetyaspectsforsustainablevegetableproduction.Allfarmersusedchemicalfertilizersandpesticidesexcessivelybutmostofthemhave lack of knowledge on the systematic use. The 80% of farmers were not using withsuitableprotectiveclothingandequipmentforusingpesticides.Therehadnotbeentrainedfortheuseof sprayers andpesticide,andpersonalhygienepractices.Thepossible activities andmotivationonsustainableagricultureinMyanmarshouldbeperformedbyawarenessprogramsfor food and environmental safety, trainings by highlighting the misuse of agrochemicals incurrent vegetable production, to protect hazards for farmers and consumers, basic andvocationaleducationforyoungadults,todevelopresearchandtoestablishreasonablemarket.

Globally,140billionmetrictonsofbiomassisgeneratedeveryyearfromagriculture.InMongolia estimated that about 1.7Mt of agriculturalwaste is generated every year. Thesewastes are not utilized properly by farmers due to lack of interest, unavailability of propertechnologyand ignoranceof the farmersof itsvalueaswellaspracticeandexperiences forutilizeagriculturalwaste for incorporationofwaste.Ouraimistomakefarmersunderstandthese wastes are valuable raw material for produce number of useful product and there isnothingwaste inagriculture,everythingcanbeconverted intosomethinguseful thatcanbeadditionalincomefortheirlivelihood.Thus,thisreportillustratestheawarenessandutilizationofagriculturalwastebythefarmers inMongolia.Agriculturalwastestakenunderstudyarewheatwaste,horticulturalwaste,livestockwaste,poultrywasteandbiogaswaste. The result revealed there was huge difference between awareness and utilization ofagricultural waste. The Indigo Food Coloring Extracted from Hydrobionts

Bivalvemolluscsareimportantmarineharvestspecies.ThedelicacyproductionmadeofAnadara broughtoniandSpisula sachalinensishasahighbiologicalandnutritionalvalue.Today’s manufacturing technologies of food production include the use only molluscs’ «feet» and,actually, other parts are simply thrown away into the trash. Nowadays, one-third of foodproducedforhumanconsumptionislostorwasted,whichamountstoabout1.3billiontonnesper year. Food is lost and wasted throughout the supply chain from initial agriculturalproduction all the way to final household consumption. Food that never gets eaten alsorepresents a waste of resources. So, this situation of food waste must be controlled by thepeoplethemselvesandbyspecialorganizationsboth. Themostofpreciouswasteofmolluscsisthebloodandintracavitaryfluidwhichconsistsalargeamountofpreciouswater-soluble(B1,B2,B6,B12,PP,Cetc.)andfat-soluble(A,E,D,K)vitamins.Despitethisfact,thebloodconsistspolyunsaturatedfattyacids(especiallycontainsalotofomega-3fattyacids)thatareincrediblyimportantforhealth.Nowadays,mostpeopledon’tgetenoughomega-3fattyacids.Bloodofmolluscsisbluethatbecauseconsistshemocyanin

(equaltohumanhemoglobin).That’swhyIwouldliketorecommendusingthehemocyaninfordyingandfortificationdairyfoodproducts,inparticular–yoghurts,ice-creams,probablysomemargarine and non-alcohol fizzy beverages.Our latest research has shown that hemocyaningivesabluecoloronlyatpHbelow6.5.Bluefoodwillbeprettyattractiveforconsumers.Bluecolorhelpsreduceappetite,andinthefuture,weightalsocalmsthehumanpsyche. Technically,thenaturalbluefoodcoloringhasn’tdevelopedandformulatedsofar.Thereis only synthetic blue food coloring in food systems that could harm a human organism

(synthetic food coloring has a potential carcinogenic effect), also these substances have nonutritionandbiologicalvalue. I faced some challenges with extraction and purification of hemocyanin from bloodmolluscs.The thing is, blood can be easily contaminated by somebiological toxins, bacteria,viruses.Basically,hemocyaninisabreathingproteinwhichс aneasilydenaturatedbyheating,acidification,ionizingradiation,usingwashingagents(detergents),thereforethesepurificationprocessesshouldbeeliminated.Theomega-3fattyacidalsomaybedestroyedbyheating,butbyaddinganantioxidanttofoodsystems,suchasgamma-tocopherol,itispossibletoreducetheomega-3destruction. However,eventhoughthehemocyaninistoosensitivetodamage,thissubstanceisnotthatexpensiveatall.LikeIsaid,bloodisservingasawasteofmanufacturingprocesses;usesuchmaterial likeahemocyanininfoodindustryischeapandcost-effective.Moreover,usingmolluscs’bloodletpeoplemakerecycling.

TheglobalmarketofprobioticisanticipatedtoachieveUSD31.1billionby2025aswellasa compound annual growth rate(CAGR)of 7.6% over the next 5year period. It will bepredictabletoreachUSD44.9billionin2050.Asia-PacificandEuropeleadtheglobalprobioticsmarketowningtoitsdemand,whereasAsia-Pacificisalsoexpectedtobethemostpromisingmarketinthenearfuture.MostoftheavailabledataonqualityfocusesonprobioticproductscontainingLactobacilliandBifidobacteria,whileveryfewdataareavailableonspore-formingprobiotics.ThepresentstudyevaluatestheprobioticefficiencyandstabilityofBacillus clausii.TheBacillus clausii wereanalyzedforviabilityinsimulatedgastrointestinalconditionsreveledhighresistancetopepsin(58%),bilesaltsandpancreatin(70%),andlowpH(41%).Inaddition,Bacillus clausiishowed42.87%moderateauto-aggregationefficiencyandhigherco-aggregationability with Escherichia coli ATCC 35150, Bacillus cereus ATCC 13061, and Staphlyococcus aureus ATCC 13150 which were 44.6%, 59.7% and 30.9%, respectively. Bacillus clausii wassensitivetoampicillin,tetracycline,vancomycin,clindamycin,penicillin,kanamycin,gentamycinand imipenem but resistant to trimethoprim, chlorophemical, erythromycin, norobiocin andmethicillin,thesafetyassessmentwereevaluatedbasedfoodapplication.TheresultsfromthisstudyindicateBacillus clausiiwereconsideredtobepromisingprobioticcandidates.TheheatandpHstabilityofBacillus clausiiwasextremelyheatstable(90and100℃for60min).Thesurvivalratewas96.31%at90℃for30min,84.37%at90℃for60min),93.75%at100℃for30minutesand82.76%at60℃for60minutes.ThestabilityforthechangeofpHwas41%,87%,84.7%,88.1%,99.7%and84%survivalratefor4hoursatpH2,4,6,8,10and12,respectively.Inaddition the safety assessment ofB. clausii were confirmed based on absence of hemolysis,gelatinase,biogenicamine(BA)productionandfurtherthetoxicitywereestimatedtoabsentinCaenorhabditis elegansmodel.Inconclusion,thecurrentanalysisclearlydemonstratesthatoftheprobioticefficiencyandheatstabilityofB. clausiitowardsthedevelopmentofvalueaddedready toeatvalueadded foodproductdevelopment.Suchasdairy,non-dairy, cereals,bakedproducts, fermented meat products, dry foods and others. Dairy products are the largestapplicationmarket forprobiotic foods.Probioticshavealsoemergedasacriticalpartof theanimalfeedindustrywithademandforestimatedtocrossUSD32.2billionby2030.

During the summer of 2 0 1 8 , I was an intern with an organization cal ledThink&EatGreen@School(TEGS).TEGSconductsresearchonfoodliteracyinBritishColumbiaand provides small school and community grants that support food literacy projects inVancouver.TheTEGS’definitionoffoodliteracyis“theabilitytomakedecisionstosupporttheachievementofpersonalhealthandasustainablefoodsystemconsideringenvironmental,social,economic,cultural,andpoliticalcomponents”(Cullenetal,2015).Asanintern,Iwasabletoseehowtheseconceptscouldbetaughttoyoungstudentsusingexperientiallearning,aprocessofactionfollowedbyreflection. Mymainrolewastoliasewithteachersfrom7elementaryschoolswhoreceivedaTEGSgrant,visitingtheirclassroomsandassistingwithfinalreportsontheprojectstheyconducted.Most of the initiatives centered around developing school gardens and getting the studentsinvolvedwithProjectChef,acookingprogramthatfocussesonhealthyfood,whereitcomesfrom, and its connection to community. The value of these various activities was apparent.EveryteacherIspoketodescribedhowtheycouldseeresultingdifferencesintheirstudents’behaviour. One teacher described how her students’ initial hesitation turned into passionateenthusiasmasthey learnedtotakeownershipofthegardentheywerebuildingandtendingtoo,whileanotherrelatedhowsheobservedherstudents’interestin,andconsumptionof,fruitsandvegetablesincreaseafterherclassparticipatedinProjectChef.Oneofthehighlightsofmyinternshipwasattendingthe“HarvestCelebration”ofoneelementaryschool,wherestudentsenjoyedfreshsaladsandpotatognocchimadefromingredientstheygrewthemselves. Intotal,TEGSdistrubuted$25000insmallgrantsamongtwenty-threeVancouverschoolsinthe2017/2018schoolyear.Asaresult,over3200studentsdirectlyengagedinfoodliteracyactivities,withthehelpofover300teachers,schoolstaff,communitymembers,andparents. Throughtheseprojects,thestudentsweregainingfoodliteracyskillsnotinatraditionalclassroom setting, but with hands-on, experiential learning. More research is needed todeterminetheimpactoftheseinitiativesonbehaviourslaterinlife.Frommyobservations,myopinion is thatthisexposureto foodandagriculture fromayoungagehasrealpotential forcreatingagenerationoffoodcitizenswhoengagewith,andadvocatefor,theirfoodsystem.

A More Sustainable Future Requires Micro-Interventions at the Local level: Reducing Exposure to Harmful Agrochemicals

Anincreasingworldpopulationdemandsmorefoodbut,whatkindoffooddoweeat?Industrial agriculture is responsible for the massive production of crops, generally fullydependentonagrochemicalsandwithaveryseriousenvironmental footprint.Agrochemicalsandtheirwastearedangerousfortheenvironmentandhumanhealth,forexample,whentheypollutewaterandweuseitforconsumptioninourdailyactivitiesorforirrigation,whentheyaredraggedbytheairtheycanreachnearbytownsorothercrops.Riskofdirectexposuretoagrochemicalsisgreatestarefarmers,farmworkersandtheirfamilies:arecentexampletookplace in the Andean rural region of Ayacucho, Peru, where a massive intoxication withagrochemicals poisoned 103 people and caused 9 deaths(El Comercio, 2018). Investigationsshowedthatagrochemicalsandtheircontainerswereaccidentallymixedwithfood,asituationnotunusualwithsmallholdersinremoteruralareasworldwide.Changesatagloballevelneedtostartatthe local level,assistingfarmersandbusinesses intheirtransformationtoamoresustainablesituation.Studentsofagriculturalsciencesareparticipatinginvariousinitiativestoimprove knowledge transfer in relation to the best use of agrochemicals, minimizing theproblemsfortheenvironmentandhumanhealth.Ihavebeenparticipatinginaninitiativetocollectagrochemicalcontainers,trainingforthecorrectapplication,talkswithstudents,farmersand companies about the importance of the proper handling of agrochemicals and theirresidues.Inmyfirstexperienceagroupofstudentscollectedmorethanhalfatonofpesticidecontainersin3hoursinavillagelocatedintheoutskirtsofthecityofLima.Theseresiduesgototemporarycollectionsitesandthenaretakentoarecyclingplant.Atthebeginningoftheseinitiatives, first they only occurred in Lima but now they are in the departments of higheragriculturalproductionand it isexpected that in the future itwill reach thewholecountry.SyntheticpesticidesinPeruaremorethan95%ofallpesticidesused,whilebiologicalpesticidesstillaccountforlessthan5%(Cruz,2017).Theuseofbiologicalpesticidesisincreasingbutevenfew people realize how dangerous chemical pesticide residues can be, this is the biggestobstacle. Sustainable food systems based on agroecology, acknowledging the importance ofsmallholdersandfamilyfarmingintheconservationofbiodiversityandruraltraditionsrequireastrongerparticipationofuniversitystudentslikeus.

In the developed world, food scarcity is primarily a problem with food management,rather than production. There is food abundance, but in countries like the UK food bankreliance has risen, while simultaneously restaurants and supermarkets dispose of good“expired”food.Somebusinessesdonatethisfoodtofoodbanks,butinsufficientclearfinancialvalueofwaste tosocietyandtheenvironmenthasmeant thatgood food iswasted inretail.Cleareconomicsystemsofreroutingunnecessarywasteontoplatesisneeded. Retailownersknowhowmuchexpiredfoodcoststhemandincludethisintheirprices.However,thesepricesdonotreflecttheoriginalenvironmentalcostorhowmuchsocietyandthehungryvaluethis“expired”food.Arecentmovementofsmallcompanies,thatcollectwastefood for delivery to either food banks or “eat cheap” restaurants, positively addresses this.Companieslike“TooGoodtoGo”havecreatedmobilephoneappswherecustomerstrackwhatfood is being discarded and buy it at discounted prices before it iswasted(“Join ourFoodWasteRevolution”,2019).Currently,“TooGoodtoGo”havelittlestudentinvolvementbutseekstudentsupportandhaverecentlylaunchedawebsitewhichpromotesactionaroundthisissue,includinginschoolsanduniversities. Anotherrecentsuccessis“TheRealJunkFoodProject”,whichcollectsgood“expired”foodfromlocalbusinesses,thenservesittotheirguestsina“paywhatyouwant”mannerandhas already fed over 250,000 people(“The Real Junk Food Project - Let’s Really Feed TheWorld”,2019).Theyrelyondonationsandvolunteerstosustaintheirbusiness,butarecrucialfor their communities, providing affordable good food for the poorest. These projects servestudentsandprovidevoluntaryandpaidpositionstostudents. Companieslikethesehavepositivelyreintegrated“expired”foodintothefooddistributionchain, assisting waste reduction and giving financial value to said food. However, there areinsufficientfinancial incentives forallbusinesses to rerouteexpired food to theplatesof thehungry.Therefore,morework isneededtonurtureactionsthataccuratelyreflect thesocio-economicandenvironmentalcostoffoodproductionandwaste,anareawherestudentresearchandtalentinvestmentiskey. Although not working with these projects, I am passionate about this topic, havingpreviouslyfeltconflictedwhendisposingofgoodfoodwhilstworkinginretail.ThisisatopicIaminterestedinexploringfurtherinthefuture.

InrelationtoSustainableAgricultureandResourcemanagementinSriLankancontext,thedegreeofusinginformationandcommunicationtechnology(ICT)isinaverylowerlevel.Ithas been identified that, this has become a huge barrier to connect the Local and Globalcommunity.Thus,Itisatimelyneedtomakethecitizensaware,aboutthepossibilitiesofusingICTinSustainableAgricultureandResourceManagement.Toachievetheexpectedchangeintheawareness,farmers,schoolstudents,teachersandcommonconsumersfromselectedareasinSriLankawereselectedtocarrythemessagetothesociety.Alltheawarenessprogramswerebasedonalltheoperationsrelatedtofarmtoforkfoodsupplychain. Asthefirstphase,asurveywasconductedtogainanunderstandingabouttheextenttowhich ICT is used on Sustainable Agriculture and resource management by giving aquestionnaire covering the farm to fork food supply chain. Schools students, teachers andfarmers from different age groups were selected from regions where digital literacy ismoderate.AfterthesurveyafriendlydiscussionwasconductedtomakethemknowledgeabletouseICTntheabovepurpose. The second phase of the project linkedwith phase 1 since the educational session insecondphasewasdesignedbasedontheresultsofphase1.FarmerorganizationswhichICTisnotfrequentlyusedintheiroperations,schoolstudentsandteachers,astheagentstocarryamassagetothesocietywerethetargetinggroupsofsecondphase. ForthethirdphaseasetofcommonconsumerswereselectedtoconductasurveytogainanunderstandingabouttheextenttowhichICTisusedbytheconsumerswhentheyaretoplanahealthymeal.Dependingontheirstandpointfourthphasewasconductedasawarenessprogram touse ICT inplanningahealthydietwith the support ofmobile applications.Thesixthphasewasorientedtomaketheconnectionbetweenconsumersandthefarmers.Farmersweregiventheknowledgetosupplytheirproductsinawaythatsupportingtheconsumerstoplanahealthydiet. Insummary,itissuggestedtousetheconnectionexplainedinthesixthphasetomakeaconnectionbetweenLocalandGlobalcommunity.

Sustainable Livestock in Brazil

Brazilcontainsthesecondlargestcattleherdandthesecondlargestbeefproductionintheworld(USDA,2019).And,itisestimatedthatBrazilwillberesponsibleforaround40%oftheworld’sfoodproductionincreaseuntil2050 Approximately50%ofthegrasslandsusedforcattleproductioninBrazilareinaseveredegradationlevel(Dias,2014).Thoseareashavelimitedcapacitytocontributeforhighyieldlivestockproductionnorareable tohelp forenvironmentalpreservation.Amajorchallenge,then,howtoproduceavaluablefood–animalprotein–withoutincreasingtheuseofnaturalresources,includingnativeareas. Toachieveasustainablelivestockproduction,itwouldbedesirableto“Feedanimalslesshuman food”, “Raise regionally appropriate animals”, “Keep animals healthy”, “Adopt smartsupplements”, “Eatqualitynotquantity”, “Tailorpractices to localculture”, “Trackcostsandbenefits” and “Study best practice”(Nature, 2014). It is necessary to develop an intensifiedproduction,takingintoaccountlocalenvironmentandinputavailability. Usingbioeconomicsystem,manyresearchersinBrazilarelookingforadaptedplantsandcoproducts, recycled fromthe industries, thatdonotcompetewithhuman food.By-productsfromcitrusandsoyprocessing industries,manioc leaves, titôniaandcoffee-hullsaresomeofalternativesstudied. Atmycurrentinternship,attheAnimalNutritionLaboratory-LANA,intheCenterforNuclear Energy in Agriculture-CENA, University of São Paulo, I am involved with severalresearcheslookingintomethodstofeedingcattlewithsustainablealternativessuchasTitônia

(averyadaptableplantinBrazil’sclimate)andsoycrust(aresidualproductfromindustries).Welooktofindabalancebetweenthefivestepstoachieveasustainablelivestock,proposedbyNature, and “Reduce losses, encourage reuse and recycling, and promote sustainableconsumption”asproposedbyFAO(2018). Other extension groups at ESALQ follow the same path, such as NutriBov(BovineNutrition Group), GPP(Pasture Research Group)and CPZ(Zoo-technical Practice Club).Together, theytrytocontributetodevelopaneffectiveprogress inthesustainable livestockchain.Theconnectionbetweenyouthmembersfromallthesegroups,lookingintoasustainableagricultureareessentialtoimproveinsightfulactionsandconnectglobalandlocalcommunities.

Kamikatsu town is aging population in Tokushima pref. It’s necessary to increasepopulation.Wehavebeen to this townonfieldpractices in springandsummerand learnedKamikatu’s agriculture(the past 5 times). To advertise agricultural products of Kamikatsutown,Weconstantlyhavesold thoseonmarket inTokyo(Ginza), insteadof farmers(since2016,2-6times/month).By such connections, these sales are carried out byNODAI students.Fromsuchreason,toachievesustainableagriculture,it’simportanttosellproductstoinformgoodnessoflocalingredients(here,Idescribebelowasregionalresourcetomatchthethemeofthissummit)andthatstudentsbecometobeabletosellregionalresource.However,Itisneededanythingtopersuadeconsumersonsalesbystudentsbecausetheydon’ttrustusverymuch. For the above reason, I think it is important to show goodness of them based onevidence. Then, we constructed sales strategy by extracting sales point from evaluation ofingredientandanalysis.Inthiscase,wefocusedonYUKO(Oneofacitrus,whichisaroundkamikatutownonly)KamikatsuproducethemostitinJapan(morethan80%).Itisn’tsoldwellandtheproductionnumberisdecreasingbecauseit’snotwell-knownandischeapunitprice.Fromabovereason,IpickedupYUKOasarepresentativeofregionalresource.Now,therearemanykindofregionallylimitedcitrusinJapan.Thisactivityismeaningfulfromaviewpointofregionalactivity,too. WeanalyzedfruitjuiceofcitrusincludingYUKO,vinegarandponzu(thecondimentusedsoysourcewithcitrus)andtookevaluationofingredientfromBrix・Acidity・Aminoacidiy・Composition of organic acid・Estimated value of taste compared sensory evaluation test toclarifygoodnessandextractsalespointofYUKO and ponzu usedYUKO whichareKamikatsu speciallyproducts. Asaresolute,weknewthattheyarelowunfavorableandcleartasteanddon’tinhibitothersensitivetasteofmaterialswhenitusesdishes.WhentheseevaluationintroducedsalesonourmarketinGinza(Tokyo),butitisn’tlong,itshowedtendencyofsalesamountsomuch.Thesearethoughtforourachievementofmakingdifferentiationfromothersimilaritemsandsalescorrespondconsumer’spalatabilityandimprovingseller’scomprehension. Toconclude,nowadays,thefoodshortageisceasing.We,people indevelopedcountry,havetothinkthattheagriculturalproductsareluxurygoodsandknowgoodnessofregionalresource.Fromthis,weadvertisegoodnessofYUKOasregionalresourcetoincreasefollowerofKamikatsu town.Toachievethat,weapplythismethodtootherproducts(forexample,Awabantya tea) and make sales strategies from different angle. Agroforestcape: A New Paradigm of Indonesia’s Agroforestry Based on Blockchain Technology for Food Sovereignty and

ThegrowingnumberofIndonesia’spopulationisstillfacinghungerproblemwhichledtoserious challenges of food sovereignty. Food sovereignty is dependent on the availability ofproductive agricultural land. Nevertheless, Indonesia’s agricultural land will decreasesignificantly by 291,922 ha in 2050due to land conversion and climate change(BAPPENAS,2010).Meanwhile,therearemorethan35.75millionhectaresofex-concessionforestareasinIndonesia,whichwithoutpropermanagementwillleadtoenvironmentalsustainabilitymenace

(APHI, 2016). Agroforestry is an alternative solution to overcome the problems of foodsovereignty and degradation of agricultural land. However, agroforestry systems that arecurrentlyimplementedinIndonesiastillfacevariousproblemsrelatedtotheirineffectiveandinefficientsupplychains.Therefore,thedevelopmentofanewparadigmcalledAgroforestcape

(Agroforestry Landscape)for Indonesia’s agroforestry based on blockchain technology isessentialtoaddressfoodsovereigntyandenvironmentalsustainabilitytargets.ThisstudywasconductedbyusingmarketgapanalysisincomparisonbetweenexistingagroforestrysystemsinIndonesiaandtheroleoftechnology.Agroforestcapecanbeimplementedbyusingtheplantcompositionof sengon buto, teak, lamtoro,mangrove,pepper, rice, sago,andcassava throughthreeplantingmodels,namely2D,3D,and4Dagroforestry.Anagroforestrymodelof1millionhaispredictedtoincreasefoodproductionsignificantlytofeed50millionpeopleandprovideadditional income through timber commodity. Converting agricultural land to agroforestryintensified carbon absorption three times higher for the 20 years ahead(Sanzech, 2000).Blockchain technology enables various stakeholders to directly exchange agroforestry dataamong themselveswithoutanyassistance froma thirdparty.Blockchaincanalsoguaranteeefficiency and accountability of agroforestry institutions. The use of blockchain technologythroughwebandmobileapplicationswillbepromotedbyforestryextensionofficersandheadof farmers group. Youth will participate as field facilitators for the implementation ofAgroforestcapeprogram.TheywillguidethefarmersthroughAgroforestcapeworkshopandcreate a survey tool for community mapping on agroforestry enterprises together withInstitute for Research and Community Services of Bogor Agricultural University. Theimplementation of Agroforestcape has several obstacles such as financial requirements andfeasibledigitalecosystemfor localcommunity.HenceAgroforestcapewillbe integratedwithgovernmentprojects, such asOneMapPolicy, SocialForestry, andSmartVillage to ensureprogram sustainability. Agroforestcape based on blockchain technology is expected toencourage the growth of agroforestry system in Indonesia towards food sovereignty andenvironmentalsustainabilitytargetsinthefuture.

Promotion and Making an International Platform for Agro-Tourism Focused on Sustainable Agriculture

SriLankaisrecognizedasanagriculturalcountryeventhoughitscontributiontotheGDPis around 6.9% in 2018(Ministry of Agriculture, 2018)as 27% of the population representsagriculturesector(DepartmentofCensusandStatistics,2017).However,up todate,world’sagriculturesectorincludinginSriLankafacesmanyproblemssuchasreductionofcropandlivestockproductionduetoseveralfactorsincludingclimatechange.Withthereducedprofitsfrom farming and with the availability of diverse biodiversity in different farming systemsworldwide including in Sri Lanka, my intention is to promote agricultural tourism which isfocused on sustainable agriculture(SUSAG tourism). A survey conducted at the beginningusingaquestionnaire,evidentfullyrevealedthatmostofthecommunitieslackdirectaccesstofindoutspecificfarmingsystemswhicharefocusedonenvironmentalfriendlyagriculture.Inordertoimplementthisidea,asaninitiation,onlineplatformswillbedevelopedinFacebook.Aspromotions throughFacebook linking localand international farmingcommunitiesproceed,awebsitewillbedevelopedtofacilitatethisfurther.Thus,connectionswillbuildupamonglocaland international experts, farmers, and students via knowledge sharing, technology transfer,andsitevisits.Thisenablesglobalcommunitiestosharetheindigenousknowledge,exposureand constructive thoughts on products and practices. As this concept promotes sustainableagriculture, as a long term point of view, youth also will engage in sustainable agriculturefocusing tourism as itwill be an ideal income source for themwith technological advances.Recently, youth involvement in tourism industry has increased in Sri Lanka. Youth as thetorchbearers of the future generation, they aspire to do a change with more energy andattitudes.Since,theyalreadyhavedevelopedan interest incontributingtotourism,theycanlinkthefarmerswithonlineplatforms,awarethefarmingcommunitiesandfurthertheywillbeguiding the rural farmers to develop their farms to match the tourism requirements. Inaddition, youth with innovative ideas could implement their own novel concepts along withSUSAGtourism.Asthisprogress,weexpecttoaddresstheissuessuchasattractingtouristsduringoffseasonsandproperplanningofavailablesitestobeavailablethroughouttheyearasmostofagro landsareseasonallycultivated.Consideringthenoveltyofthisconceptandthepossibility tocontribute formanysustainabledevelopmentgoals(decentworkandeconomicgrowth, partnerships for the goals, climate action, zero hunger and no poverty)with theinvolvementofyouth,thiscouldleadtoasustainablefuture.

In general,knowledge about food production and processing decreases. A growing misunderstandingbetweenthetwosidesistobenoted.Especially,youngerpeoplewhohavespenttheirwholechildhood in a big city never had the chance to get into agricultural production or had theresponsibilityfortheirownfoodproduction. One possibility to get the city population back into contact with the agriculturalproductionandtheoriginoftheirgroceriesagainissolidarityagriculture.Amethodwhichisattractive to youngpeople and students.The concept of solidarity agriculture is on the onehand based on a group of consumers and on the other based on a cooperative farmer oragriculturalproducer.Thegrocerieswillnotbesoldonaclassicmarketorprocessingindustrybutrunthroughanownorganisedcircleof“producing-selling-consumption”. In this concept, participating consumers have a contractwith a farmer.Theypay anannuallydeterminedfeetotheproducerofwhichhecancoverhiscostsandgainshisprofit.Mostly, this fee is paid on a monthly basis. Frequently the consumers have the chance toparticipate in simple labour issues, such as weeding or harvesting by hand. In return, theconsumers get the agreed amount of the harvest or, if the producer is processing food, theprocessedproducts. In summary, solidarity agriculture shows a high potential to close the growinggap –regardingtourbanization–betweenproducersandconsumers.InGermanyarisingnumberofconsumers andproducers in or close to urban areas take the opportunity to get benefits ofsolidarityagriculture.Meanwhile,therearedifferentvarietiesofthisconcepttofind.Imyselfworked on a farm at the suburban of Darmstadt who leases a part of their farmland tostudents and other interested people on a yearly basis. To begin with, the farmer plantsvegetablesandafterwardsthestudentsandothershavetheresponsibilityforcultivationandharvesting.Also,attheuniversitywhereIstudyfarmersintheneighbourhoodsellvegetableboxes to students. We can buy them weekly for a fixed price and get what is seasonallyproducedonthefield. Thisvarioustypesof“SolidarityAgriculture”couldbeagreatchanceforstudentsandinterestedpeoplefromurbanandruralareastocombineknowledgetransfer,socialcooperationandtogetthemselvesbackintoagriculturalproductionandprocessing.

Foodproduction and agricultureproductionproduce large amount ofwastedmaterialsuchasricehulls,cullfruitsandvegetables.Managementofplantwastematerialproducedinagricultural production system during pre-harvest and post-harvest are increasing concernswhichhavebeenaddressedworld-wide.Blacksoldierfly(Hermetia illucens)isaninsectwhichhashighefficiencyinbioconversionbydigestinganddegradingalmostanykindofwaste.Forexample, manure, food waste, and agricultural by-products can be digested in a very shortperiodoftime(Manurung,2016).Moreover,ithasbeenreportedthatblacksoldierfly(BSF)canaccelerate the speed of degradation, eliminate the smell of waste and reduce the E-coli inmanure(Erickson,2009). Itwasdiscovered that from10 tonsof food-waste,300kgofdriedlarvaeand3,346kgofcompostareproduced(Salomone,2017).Furthermore,prepupaearerichinprotein, andmany studieshave shown that it canbe an alternative source of protein forlivestockanimalsandperformasagoodsupplement(Bondari,1987)(Sealey,W.M.,2011).BSFcouldbearisingstarofacirculareconomythatcreatesazero-wastefoodproductioncycle.InTaiwan, the use of larvae as composting agent and prepupae as animal feed were adaptedamongasmallgroupofenvironmentalconsciousproducers.IexploredtheuseofBSFcompostasavegetablefertilizerasanoptiontoincreasetheuseofBSFinzero-wastesfoodproductioncycle.Inmystudy,largerleafareawasrecordedinBSFcomposttreatmentwiththeratioofnitrogen contentwasnot affected.BSFdigestedmaterial providedagood source of organicmatterasafertilizerandmayeffectivelyimprovesoilconditions,suchassoilacidification.Thebiggest global challenge of adapting BSF as a composting agent, animale feed or use asfertilizeristocomplywithcurrentfoodsafetyandotherregulationsofusingblacksoldierfly.Morescientificresearchandpublicawarenessisneededtoprovidethepracticalityandsafetydatatothepublicoftheblacksoldierflyinordertoestablishrelatedregulations.

Agriculturesectorisalwaysgivenspecialtreatmentandforthatreason,itisoneofthelargestcontributortoMalaysiaGrossDomesticProduct(GDP).Nevertheless,theagriculturecontribution was basically coming from commodity crop such as oil palm meanwhile thecontributionofcashcropssuchasvegetables,fruits,paddyandlivestockaresmall.Inspiteofthat,thesecashcropsandlivestockareveryimportantbecausetheysupplyfoodtothepeople.Theconcernedaboutfoodsafetyhasbeendiscussedforyearsmainlyintheincidenceoffoodpoisoning and the amount of chemical residual especially in vegetables were above thepermissiblelevel.Inthesametoken,theprocessedfoodalsogivingathreattofoodsafetyinthesensethatmostoftheprocessedfoodusingchemicalandadditivetoaddthetimeutilitytothe products. Along these lines, engaging youth especially those who have agriculturebackground is important because these youths have been exposed to the importance ofsustainable agriculture practices and the importance of conserving bio-diversity andenvironmentintheirrespectiveclassesandpracticaltrainings.Theseyouthswerealsobeingexposedtotheimportanceoforganicfarming,MalaysiaGoodAgriculturalPractices(MyGAP)and also sustainable procedures for crops likes paddy, oil palm and others cash crops andcommoditycrops.Inadditiontothese,involvementfromgovernmentsectorsuchasMinistryofPrimary Industry and non-government sectors are very encouraging. In doing so, UPMstudentswere introduced to themodern and high tech agriculture that are sustainable andenvironmentally friendly.Thiswill encouragemore youth to engage in agriculturewhich isseenashardwork,toilingthelandandworkingunderthescorchingsun.Thiswillensurethefood that being produced are safe and free form the excessive use of chemical and othersunwantedchemicals.

This ISS theme has 2 tasks: sustainable agriculture, and resource managements toconnectbetweenglobalandlocalcommunities.Eachtaskisserioustopicintheworld.IintroduceNodaiproject(APC:AgriculturalPublicCorporation)throughthisISS,becauseAPChasmuchpossibilitytosolvethose2tasks.Asapremise,APChasnotstartedcompletelyyet.But it must be going to start in 2020. Besides it is carried out in Kitashiobara village,Fukushiamapref.Nodaicooperateswiththevillagefrom2013,thenstudentsvisitandactsomeeventstheretwiceayear. Aboveall,thereare2purposesofAPC.①Establishagriculturalcompanyandpromotetoaccomplish sixth-order industrialization. ② Increase various populations through integratedagriculture and tourism. Now,1activityiscarriedout.Itisfeedingemuinabandonedfarms.Thisactivityisbasedon2programs,agriculturaldemonstration,andrestoringabandonedfarms.Emuissecondlythebiggestbirdandtheiroilareappliedtocosmetics.Thisactivitystarted2yearsago,thenabout20babieswerebornthisyear.Inthefuture,thenumberofemuswillincreasemorethan400,andmakingproductsappliedtotheiroil,meat,andeggs. Empowering Youth Through Community Gardening Education

Community after community, our world faces childhood hunger, food insecurity, andwidespreadobesity.Over821millionpeoplearoundtheglobeendurefooddeprivation,with112millionintheUnitedStatesalone.TheseissuescanbemorepronouncedinunderservedareasasitisinsomepartsofthegreaterMSUcommunity.Involvingyouthincommunitygardeningeducation,suchastheJuniorMasterGardenerProgram(JMG),canhelpresolvetheseissues.Communitygardeningcanbedefinedasasharedpieceoflandgardenedbyagroupofpeopleonprivateorpublicland.Thesegardenscanbefoundinresidencesaswellasinstitutions. ThroughMSUExtension, Iworkedasan interdisciplinaryFood,Health,andNutritionEducationSupportIntern.OneofmyprimaryprojectswasleadingandimplementingtheJMGprogramattwounderrepresentedareassurroundingMSU.Approximately20elementaryagedyouth enjoyed the benefits of cultivating nourishment from their communities’ own soil.Additionally, this programeducated the children regarding the origin of freshproduce, howfood aids their bodies, and how to build community through shared gardens all the whilecombatingfoodinsecurity. JMG is a hands-on gardening experience that involves cultivating the land, educatingaboutnutrition,anddevelopingarespectfortheenvironment.Besidesthelearningexperienceofgrowingfreshproduce,other lifeskillsareobtained—leadership,cooperation,commitment,andempowerment. Inmyinternship,IexpandedtheJMGcriteriaandaddedelementscreatingapersonalizedversionoftheprogram.Atypicalsessionlastedtwohoursinthegardenwherethestudentsbeganwithgardeningactivitiesofplanting,watering,andweedingwhile learningbasicplantbiologyandenvironmentalaspects.Next,anactivityfocusingonnutritioneducation,cooking,orphysicalactivitytookplace.Throughout12weeks,theparticipantsalsoworkedoncommunityserviceprojectssuchasdonatingtheirproduceandcreatingflyersaboutnutrition. Educating the youth using community gardens, especially those in underserved areaswhereaccesstohealthyfoodischallenging,createssustainablechangeinglobalissuesoffoodinsecurity,environmentalproblems,andobesityrisk.Thisprogram’sresearchilluminesthattheempowerment of youth through nutrition leads to higher test scores in school and greateroverallrespectforthemselves. Creatingcommunitygardensimprovesaccesstofreshfoods,whichcreatesincreasedfoodsecurity, improved dietary habits, and lower risk of health related diseases. Out of theseventeensustainabledevelopmentgoals,thisprogramfallsintothegoalsofZeroHunger,GoodHealthandWellBeing,andResponsibleConsumptionandProduction.Incorporatingchildreninagardeningeducationempowersthemtomakehealthydecisionsabouttheirlivesandcreatesawarenessfortheenvironmentintheircommunity.

Youth Transforming Thoughts into Practice to Make the Brazilian Sugar-Energy Sector Even Greener

Rapidhumanpopulationand incomegrowthsresult inhigherdemand for food,water,energyandotherproducts.Agricultureisakeysourceofmanyoftheseresourcesandithasreceived pressure to increase production, particularly in Brazil. Unfortunately, in manysituation,higherproductionscauseenvironmentalproblemssuchastheproductionofwastesthatresultinwaterandsoilpollution. Sugarcane,animportantsourceoffood(sugar)andbioenergy(ethanolandelectricity)is a good example of this duality. Brazil is the world’s top sugarcane producer, with anestimated29x106tofsugarand33x109litersofethanolproducedin2018/2019(CONAB,2019),boostedbyagovernment’sprogramcalledRenovaBio.However,theproductionofethanolfromsugar cane generates a large quantity of a corrosive, liquid byproduct called vinasse. Thisbyproductisexpectedonceonlythesugar,whichrepresentslessthan20%ofsugarcanejuicecomposition, can be turned into alcohol by the yeast. All other suspended solids, organiccompoundsandmoisturebecomethisconcentratedresidue. Theproportionvinassetoethanolproductionis14:1,whichresultsinmorethan450billionliters of vinasse per year. If improperly managed, it has the potential to become a hugepollution problem. Historically, vinasse has been thrown back at sugarcane fields forfertirrigation, which is the cheapest way to dispose of it, causing soil exhaustion andsalinization.ItstartedtobecomeanimportantissueafterstrongincentivesfromtheBraziliangovernmentincreasedexponentiallythenationalethanolproductionduringtheOilCrisisinthe‘70s.Sincethen,severalalternativesolutionshavebeenstudied. Ourcollegehasbeenactiveontacklingthevinasseissue.AsearchonourGraduatethesisdatabaserevealedover30entriesrelatedtothisprobleminthelastdecadealone.Thisisanindicationoftheyouthengagedonsustainability,withpositiveoutcomes.SomeofthesolutionsproposedaretheuseofvinasseasrawmaterialforBiogasproduction,generatingenergyfromwasteandconcentratedfermentationtechnique,whichlowerstheamountofvinasseproducedperliterofethanol. Icurrentlyparticipateonthestudiesforconcentrationofvinassesolids,whichseparatessaltsandorganicmatterofknownconcentrationswithpotentialuseas.Itwouldalsoincreasethepumpabilityofthe liquid,allowingmillsto fertirrigate largerareas,reducing itsnegativeimpact of salinization and water-soil pollution. Although not ideal, this alternative is animportantimprovementanditwasamajorcontributionfromESALQ’sresearch. Theseresearchshowsthatsuchactivitiesatuniversitiescanhelpimprovesustainabilityand resource management in the agricultural chain. It also engages youth into building asystem that ensures production of resources demanded by the population, minimizes theenvironmental impact and, therefore, improves local conditions – mitigating impacts ofpollutants–andgeneratesglobalbenefitsbymakingtheseresourcesavailableworldwide.

Youth involvement is an important weapon in our journey to sustainability. In thePhilippines,theyouthhelpthroughsimplewayslikesharingnewsarticles,andexperiencesonsocialmediaandmakesglobaleffortseasiertomobilize.TheUniversityofthePhilippinesLosBaños(UPLB)engage in academic partnerships to further students’ knowledge on globalstrategies in attaining sustainable agriculture and incorporating it into the country’s localconditions.Moreover,studentsofUPLBarerequiredtoconducttheirownresearchandstrivetomakeimpactwithit.Agriculturalbio-technologystudentsworkontheimprovementofcropvarietiestoadaptwithclimatechanges.Likewise,agriculturaleconomicsstudentsresearchontheefficiency,productivityandmarketingofagriculturalproductstohelpincreaseincomeandlessenthecostsofFilipinofarmers.Thesestudentsalsoorganizeseminarsthatgivelightonthedifferentagriculturalissues,aswellasspreadknowledgeonwaysthestudentscanhelporinvestinagriculturethroughspeakersworkingintheagriculturesector. Student organizations like AIESEC engage in different projects targeting the UnitedNation’s Sustainable Development Goals. They help develop a community through theirmembers,partnersandexchangeparticipants.TheyalsoraiseawarenessonagribusinesseslikeSierreza,acommunityofindigenousfarmers,thatmakedemandforthefarmers’produceandkeepthemfromdoing illegalanddangerous livelihoodstoearnfastcash.Another is theUPGeneticResearchersandAgriculturalInnovatorsSociety.Theyhostbootcampinhighschoolcampuses to raise interest in youth to agriculture. Through this activity, the number offreshmen students who signed up for agriculture-related degrees seemed to increase.Additionally,theyconductcommunityvisitstohavedeeperunderstandingofwhatthefarmersneedanddeliverit. AgenciesliketheFoodandAgricultureOrganizationpartnerswithstudentorganizationssuch as the Young Entrepreneurs Society to organize projects in local communitiesencouragingyouth involvement insustainabledevelopment.Under thisproject,youthgroupscultivatevegetablesandherbs intheirbackyardsandschoolyardsusingrecyclablematerialsincluding plastic bottles, worn out jeans, shoes, and tyres. Schools like the Paciano RizalElementarySchoolandKapayapaanIntegratedSchoolorganizesfeedingprogramandadaptsthisprogramintotheircurriculum.Programslikethesemaketheyouthrealizetheeffectsoftheirlocalactionsintotheglobalcommunityandresultintoamoreresponsibleyouth.Asournationalherooncesaid,“theyouthisthefutureofourmotherland”andtheywillnot lettheworlddie.

First, to enhance understanding of oral presentation, I show some pictures of socialfarming. Starting the Conversation: How Engaged Students are Shaping College Campuses Through Sustainable Thought

In the face of a global catastrophe, lack of education, hands-on experience, andencouragement take the form of environmental apathy within college campuses. At manyuniversitieslikeMichiganStateUniversity(MSU),it’seasyforstudentstoignoretheindividualandcollectiveenvironmental impacts students enactupona changingecosystem.Likemanyschools,MSUstruggleswithcommonissueslikefoodwaste,witharound1,129poundsoffoodwastedeverydaywithinMSU’sculinaryanddiningservices(MSUResidentialandHospitalityServices,2018).Otherissuesincluderecycling,withrecyclablesmakingup37%ofMSUtrashcollection(MSU Recycling Center, 2018). These issues are often a result of lack of youtheducationprogramsontopicsrelatedtoresourcemanagementandsustainableagriculture. TheResidentialInitiativeontheStudyoftheEnvironmentprogram,orRISE,isaimingtoreinvent how sustainability is implemented on college campuses by engaging students inworkshops,resources,andhands-onexperiencesinordertotransformtheircollegeexperienceforthemselvesandtheirpeers.StudentswithinRISEjoinco-curricularteamsinwhichstudentsare given unique and valuable experiences in community engagement through studentgovernment,organicfarming,compostingandvermicomposting,healthandwellness,andmanymore.TheRISEprogramallowsstudentstogainskillssuchascreatingmeaningfuldialoguesaround the impact of agriculture on a local and global scale. RISE students encouragesustainable actions on campus by pursuing majors and minors within the Department ofCommunitySustainability,bringingsustainablepracticestodifferentfields,orjoiningclubsandgroups on campus that encourage sustainable activism. RISE gives students the ability tobecome leaders in sustainability who help influence youth to become aware of resourcemanagementwithinlocalandglobalcommunities. RISE is beneficial to the studentswithin theMSUcampus because of the knowledgegained, which is then transferred through learning programs for the youth. When studentscome to campus, they are exposed to many sustainable initiatives like the RISE pollinatorgarden, greenhouses, clean plate initiative meals, and recycling initiatives. Youth workshoptraining programs focusing on sustainability and improved environmental resourcemanagementarewaysthatMSUishelpingtotransformyouthworldviews.Ifthesetypesofeducationalprogramswereimplementedintomiddleschoolsandhighschoolsacrosstheglobe,young studentswould learnhow tobecomeengaged in their own community.These living-learningprogramstransformyouthworldviewsbyexposingthemtobestpracticeswithinlocalandglobalsustainablecommunities.

Traditionalmedicineisconsideredasthefirsthealthcaresystemresourcetotreatailmentsinseveralcountries(Fidelisetal.,2018;Mezragetal.,2017)andabout80%ofpeopleintheworlddependontraditionalmedicineaccordingtotheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)(Yabeshetal.2014). Traditionalmedicinestudiesincludeethnomedicine,themostusedpracticesbypeoplethatliveinruralareasandindigenouscommunitiesanditiseasilyaffectedbyfactorssuchaseconomicactivity,socio-economic level, migration, access to new health care systems, new herbal products, etcetera

(Pérez-Nicolásetal.,2017).ThediversityofmedicinalplantsisveryhighinacountrysuchasMexico,inwhichmorethan50indigenouslanguagesarespokenandwhichisverywellknownforitsbiologicaldiversity. Atthenationallevel,themostoftheMexicanindigenouspopulationsliveinruralareas(61.1%incommunitieswithlessthan2,500inhabitants)(Coneval,2012).Thecountrycontainsawidevarietyofhigherplants(30,000)whicharenotexploredintheirtotalityandahighnumberareendemicspecies

(Byeetal.,1995). InfactinMexicothetraditionalmedicineisthefirstalternativetotreatailmentsbecausemanydrugsareexpensiveornotalwaysavailablelocally(Hernándezetal.2003). Veracruzisoneofthericheststateswithregardtobiologicalandculturaldiversity.(Rzedowski,1981). The medicinal flora of Veracruz was used as remedy to treat several diseases, includingdigestivesystem,skin,reproductivesystem,orreligious-culturalpractices(Gheno-Herediaetal.,2011).Inthestudyareaasinotherregions,therecordingoftraditionalknowledgeisnotwidelypromoted.Moreover,thepreservationofknowledgeisstillcarriedoutinoralformfromgenerationtogeneration

(Cussy-Pomaetal.,2017). 77outof212municipalitiesinthestatehavemoderatepoverty(RiveraandRamírez(2014).Itis therefore important to consider ethnobotany as an alternative and sustainable way of treatingcertaindiseases. The study area, geographically known as Totonacapan, is located in the northern part ofVeracruz.Thisregionrepresentsabout5.97%ofthetotalareaofthestateofVeracruz.Tothestudyitcollectedinformationontheuseofmedicinalplantsin16communitiesinPapantla,Veracruz. Themunicipalterritoryismainlydevotedtoagriculture(68%).Totonacapanhasapopulationof622846inhabitants.32.5%ofTotonacpopulationworksintheprimarysectorandaround66,000peopleinPapantlahaveindigenousroots. Thestudyaimstoidentifythecurrentmedicinalplantsused,registerthetraditionalknowledge,andanalyzehowthisknowledgeimpactsinthetotonacascommunities. In this study, a number of 85 informants have recognized a total of 101 medicinal plantsbelongingto51families.Asteraceaewasthefamilywiththehighestnumberofplantspeciesthattheinformantsknew.Plantpartswereusedtotreatseveralailmentsaspoisonousbites,cancer,gastro-intestinaldisorders,infectivediseasesandotherdisorders.Informantsreportedthatthemostcommonplantpartusedwasleaftissue(55%);anddecoction(38%)andinfusion(29%)weretheformsusedtopreparenaturalremedies.InVeracruzarea,localpopulationstaketheherbalremediesorally(72%). The most represented family were Asteraceae and Rutaceae with both having 8 species,followed by Fabaceae(6 species), Myrtaceae, Malvaceae and Apocynaceae(4 species), andEuphorbiaceae,Lamiaceae,MeliaceaeandPoaceaewith3species.

Effects of Ecosystems Services on Crop Farming and on Land Fisheries

In my research I linked ecosystem services(ESS)in the Netherlands to both cropfarmingandonlandfisheries.ESSsummarizethebenefitssocietyreceivesfromcertainpartsof nature or environment(World Resources Institute, 2005). The Millennium EcosystemAssessment(World Resources Institute, 2005)identifies four types of ecosystem service: 1. Provisioning services:Timber, fuel, freshwaterandothers2. Regulating services:Climate-and flood regulation 3. Supporting services: Nutrient cycle and soil formation 4. Cultural services:Aestheticandspiritualvalues.TheprovisioningofESSservicesbynaturethusplaysaholisticroleintheworld’ssociety.

ESS in Potato Crop Production and Fish Production FarmersandfishermenarebarelyawarethatESScanhavea(n)(in)directeffectontheirproduction(Smith&Sullivan,2014).WhatItriedtoaccomplishinmyresearchislinkingESStothesetwotypesofbusinessesinordertoevaluatetheroleoftheESSintheiroperations.Waterisneededtocultivatepotatoes,socleanwateravailabilitycanbeconsideredaninputinpotatocropproduction.Afertilesoilisneededforpotatoestogrownsufficiently,sosoilfertilityisalsoconsidered an input in the potato sector(Ridgway, 2018). For the production of fish, bothhabitat for species(fish need a clean and livable place in the wild to sufficiently grow andreproduce)anddiseaseregulation(illfishcannotreproduceandcannotbeeaten)areinputsinthefisherysector(Toddetal.,2010).

Substitutability Possibilities of ESS AfterassessingwhichESScouldpossiblyhaveaneffectonproduction,IassessedwhatcouldbeexpectedtohappenwithESSinthefuture.AllfourESScanbeexpectedtodecreaseinthecoming50years,wherediseaseregulationandwateravailabilityareprobablygoingtodecrease. Afterthis,IassessedtheseverityofthedecreaseofESSforbusinesses.Wateravailabilityanddiseaseregulationareratherimportantforpotatofarmersoronlandfisheries,theotherESSarealsoimportantbuttoasmallerextend.ThishighreliabilityanddecreaseinESScouldbeagreatburdenandthusthedegreetowhichanESScanbesubstitutedbyotherinputshadto be assessed. I found that all fourESSwere either hard or very costly to substitute.AnimportantanddecliningESSthatishardorcostlytosubstitutewillprobablybeagreatburdenontheprofitandfutureviabilityofabusiness.

Conclusion Thisobtainedfactcouldbeusedinpolicymaking.Abusinessthat(indirectly)advantagesfromanESScouldalsobeheldmoreresponsible forpreservingorconserving theESS.Forexample,acropfarmercouldbedesignatedtobemoreresponsibleforpreservingcleanwateravailability(eithermonetaryorintermsofpreservingpractices). Thisresearchprovidesasimplebutclearframeworktoassessmoresectors.Therefore,itisimportantthatthesefindingarepresentedhere,toinspireotherstoassessothersectorsinordertocompletelymapthecurrentsituation.AmorecompletepictureofexistingESSandtheireffectswouldhelptocreateappropriatepoliciesregardingtheenvironment,ecosystemsanditsservices.

Learning and Activities in UniversityLead to Sustainable Agriculture and Resource Management

Thisstudywouldintroduceandencouragethenewgenerationtolearnandunderstandhow to work on sustainable agriculture and resources management with the philosophy ofsufficiency economy. The philosophy has been initiated by His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej,andproposedtopeopleofThailand.AtKasetsartUniversity,thereisthephilosophyofsufficiencyeconomycourse,whichitsphilosophyisconsistedofmoderation,prudence,andsocial immunity. The students learned and applied the knowledge from the course to theiragricultural activities. They had a chance to visit the communities that have successfullyappliedthephilosophyofsufficiencyeconomy.OneofthecasestudieswasatBanPlakMaiLaicommunitythatpeopletherewereconsideringthephilosophyofsufficiencyeconomytosolvetheirproblemssuchasdebt,soildeterioration,highexploitationofresourceswithlessreturn,etc.After learning about thephilosophy of sufficiency economy,members of the communitychangedtheirmindsetonallactivitiestheyhave,theyshouldconsidercosts,returns,consumerdemand,andproductivity.Finally,thecommunityhassucceededtosolvemostproblems.Thecommunity was established as an organic agriculture learning center by using recycle andup-cycle of agricultural products in the community to promote sustainable agriculture andresourcemanagement.At present, the learning centerwork on integrated farmingwith anemphasis on organic agriculture. They plant 9 types of plants in the same plot. They dorotation cropping that the produces could harvest throughout the year. They grow pest-repellingplantsnexttootherkindsofvegetablesandalsouseherbsandbioextracttoreducethe usage of pesticides. Students applied the knowledge they have learned both inside andoutside of the classroomon their activities of growingvegetables to earn income.Theyusecompostandmanurefromanimalfarmsoncampustoreducetheusageofchemicalfertilizers,andpesticides for the safetyofproducersandconsumers. Inaddition, students also realizedthatrecycleandup-cycleorusingresourcesefficientlycanreduceproductioncostsandearnmoreincome.Thisactivityencouragesthestudentstolearnaboutfarmingthatdecreasesthebad impact on the environment. In conclusion, these activities will continue to encourageawarenessof sustainableagricultureand resourcemanagement to studentseveryyear.Thephilosophy of sufficiency economy could make the new generation aware of sustainableagriculture and resource management. Moreover, the students can apply this philosophy todeveloptheircommunityandcountryinthefuture.

Students in the Field of Dry Land Salinity in Western Australia

Soilsalinityisthegradualriseofwatertablebringingsalttothesurfaceandcurrentlyaffects 4.5 million hectares of highly productive low lying farm land in Western Australia

(DepartmentofPrimaryIndustriesandRegionalDevelopment,2018).ThisoccurredwheninWestern Australia in response to the clearing of native plants and the subsequent rise ingroundwatercontainingsaltsformerlystoredlowerinthesoilprofile(Bennett&Macpherson,2003).When leftuncheckeddry landsalinitycausescrystallisedsalt tocometo thesurface,making the soil unfertile and unable to grow traditional crops or native plants(Taylor &Hoxley,2003). FromworkinginthewheatbelttownofHarrismithinregionalWesternAustraliaIhaveobserved the effects of dry land salinity on crop production, as well as assessed theeffectivenessof remediationpractisesused tocombat therisingwater table.Farmers in theregionhaveportionsoftheirpropertythatareeithernolongersuitableforbroadacreorareaswhere yield is being negatively affected by salinity. Individual farmers and institutions inWesternAustralia havebeenworking to develop technologies tomitigate the effects of soilsalinity,includingdiggingdeepdrainsandplantingspecieswithdeeprootsystemstoprotectagainsttherisingwatertable(Taylor&Hoxley,2003).Thesetwoprocesseshaveindividualissues,andbothsuffer fromgrowersnotseeing immediatereturnon investmentandhavinghighopportunitycosts(Clarke,2019). StudentsatTheUniversityofWesternAustraliahaveexpressedan interest inbeingbetterequippedtoadvisegrowersonhowtomanagesalinesoils.Furthermore,“studentsdon’tlearnenoughaboutthelimitationssurroundingcropping”(J.Howard,localfarmerfromSouthStirling). I will present findings from a student survey investigating how undergraduatestudents’bestengagewiththetopic,andhowgrowersfeelregardingtheconnectionbetweenUniversity course content and current salinity issues. Developing innovative solution toaddressing soil salinitywill be strengthened by establishing the views of both students andgrowers.Furthermore,findingswillbeofvaluetootherstudentsbasedincountries,suchasSub Sahara Africa and the Middle East(Qureshi, 2015), that face similar environmentalchallenges.

Forestry and Capercaille Management in Scottish Stronghold Areas

WithincertainareastheCairngormsNationalPark,thereiscontinuingmanagementofthe endangered Capercaillie(Tetrao urogallus)and existing native and commercial forestryplantation. There are a variety of factors which may result in decreasing numbers of thespecies, currently1,100remaining.Factors include;deer fencing,predators,disturbance fromrecreationaluseandadecreaseinfoodsourcesandhabitat.Thecontinuingdemandfortimbersuppliesandtheneedforpreservationpresentconflictinglanduses(RSPB,2019;CairngormsNationalPark,2019). Severalactionplanshavebeenimplementedinpreviousdecades,withnopositiveeffectsonincreasingCapercaillienumbers.Onetheory,whichisparticularlyimportantforcommercialforestry,isthatduetothecreationofcommercialforestryblocks,theoveralllightlevelsontheforest floor decrease. This, in turn, reduces natural light, which allows species such asBlaeberryandothershrubstothrive,providingfoodandhabitat.Inaddition,thebirdsareoftenfatally injured when colliding with deer fencing, as a result of this, the number of fences,introducedalongwithcommercialforestryinthe1970switharesultingdeclineinCapercaillienumbers,hasnowbeenreduceddramaticallywithintheCairngormsNationalPark(BBC,2019;GameandWildlifeConservationTrust,2019;SNH,2019). Withoutcurrent intervention,Capercaillewould likelyhavebecomeextinct.Thesocialeffectswouldbethedecreaseintouristnumbersinthearea,duetothelossofafocalspecies.Thiswouldreduceincomeandculturalaspectsofthelocalarea,resultingindecreasingqualityoflife.Theenvironmentalbenefitsproposedbyexistingmanagementplansarelargelypositive,byreducingintensiveforestrywithopenwoodlands,thiswouldprovebeneficialforCapercaillieandoverallbiodiversity.(GameandWildlifeConservationTrust,2019) Several organisations are actively involved with conservation of Capercaille such as;IntegratedLandUseConference(ILUC),RSPB,CairngormsNationalParkandScottishNaturalHeritage. The ILUC is an annual UHI student conference, which promotes breaking downbarrierswithinthelandmanagementsectors,inordertopromoteintegration.Theconferenceactively encourages students to design plans and initiatives which can help to improveintegration of land uses and promote sustainability. At the end of the conference studentsincludingtheauthorleavewiththeirgroupparticipationdesignedinitiatives/objectives,whichcan then be presented to employers and industry leaders, in order to promote greatermanagementstabilityandintegration,thisensurescontinuingparticipation.(UniversityoftheHighlandsandIslands,2019)

Characterization of the Urbanization Process of the Amazon, Dispersion and Urban Fragmentation

InBrazil,theAmazonhasthelargestareaofcontinuousandpreservedtropicalforestsintheworld.Recentdata indicatethatdeforestationratesarereaching levelsthatexceed15%.These values warn of frequent changes in land use and land cover leading to seriousenvironmentalproblems,suchastheconservationoftheregion’sbiodiversity,changes inthecarbonandhydrologicalcycle,anddirectlyaffectinglocalandglobalclimatechange.Issuessuchas these are objects of study of the scientific community, drawing attention to preservationorganizations and international opinion. In addition to the environmental issue, we haveobservedinrecentdecadesthattheregionhasexperiencedthehighestratesofurbangrowthin Brazil. The diversification of economic activities and resulting population changes haverestructuredandreorganizedthenetworkofhumansettlementsintheregion.Theperceptionof the Amazon in the early 21st century presents patterns and spatial arrangements of adifferentAmazon:inthemiddleofthetropicalforestacomplexurbanfabricwasstructured,leadingtothecreationanduseoftheterm“urbanizedforest”bytheresearcherswhostudyandfollowtheoccupationoftheregion(Becker,1995).However,theurbanpopulationgrowthwasnotaccompaniedbytheimplementationofinfrastructuretoguaranteeminimumconditionsofqualityof life.LivingconditionsincitiesandurbansettlementsareoneofthebiggestandworstenvironmentalproblemsintheAmazon.Theurbanizationoftheregionisundergoingastructuringphase,characterizingitselfasa“frontier”region,wherethedynamicsofcitiesarestillveryintenseandstable,includingtheemergenceofnewurbansettlements. Humanandcapitalmigrationfromtherestofthecountry,withorwithoutofficialsupport,hasputpressureonindigenouspeoplesandtraditionalcommunities,whoincreasinglyaspiretothebenefits ofdevelopment that canmeet theirneedswithoutundermining their traditions.Therefore, it is important to study the socio-environmental and economic aspects related tourbanizationandurbanexpansion,particularlytheemergenceofprecarioussettlements,newoccupationareasandterritorialdiscontinuities. In thisway, through frequentparticipation inthelocalities,doingaworkofawarenessandclarificationintheareasinvolvedintheprocess,we verified the importance of involving in the context young people, mainly children ofmembersoftheseoccupiedareas,promotinginformationanddiscussionsthatcanbeusedtocharacterizeandtrytosolvetheprocessofurbanexpansionoftheAmazon.

ThepopulationinIndonesiaisinthefourthlargestintheworld.In2010,populationdatainIndonesiaaccordingtotheCentralStatisticsAgency(BPS)reached237.5million.Thislargenumber has consequences for the magnitude of energy needs, one of which is energy ofelectricity(MinistryofEnergyandMineralResources,2015).Moreover,withtheconditionofconventionalelectricitynetworks thatarenotoptimal,have lowefficiency,andhavea lotofpowershortages(losses)duringdistribution.ThishasanimpactonIndonesia’selectrificationratiothathasnotbeenevenlydistributed,suchasruralandOuterIslands.In2018,theaverageof Indonesia electrification ratio is 97.78%. However, there are still some regions that havebelow-averageelectrificationratios,namelyEastNusaTenggara(59.85%)andPapua(61.42%)which are dominated by the outermost rural areas. This is caused by the region andtopographicconditionsthatmakeitdifficultfortheelectricitydistributionprocess.Meanwhile,theruralandouterregionsofIndonesiahaverenewableenergypotentialthatcanbedevelopedaccording to user / customer needs. SINERGY present by uses renewable energy in itsoperationsthatintegratedwithsmartgrid,whereisabletointegratetheactionsoractivitiesofallusersfromthegeneratortotheconsumerstobemoreefficient,sustainable,economicalandsafe(Weedal,2010).Wecancontroluseofelectricalenergythroughinformationobtainedinrealtimeandalsoabletoconductelectricitysalestransactionstothegovernmenttocreateanenergy-independent society. Smart grid has the ability to detect, anticipate, and respond toproblemsthatoccuronthenetworksystemthroughinteractionofcensor-basecontrolinrealtime.Therefore, if there is adistributiondisruption inanarea, thebasecontrolwill quicklyback up conditions with allocate electricity sources from closest power supply by reroutesystem. In its implementation, SINERGY requires considerable operational costs to make arenewable energy power plant as the main source of energy for the community. This alsorequires challenges in terms of regional topography that is not easy. However, SINERGYteachesusasayounggenerationtobeabletocontributetoanequaldistributionofenergyinsocietybyeducatingtheimportanceofpreservingtheenvironmentasalternativeenergyforthefuture.So,thisprogramisabletocreateasocietythatisindependentofenergyandloveinmaintainingtheenvironmentalsustainability.

In commemorationof 110thAnniversaryof theFoundingofTokyoUniversity ofAgriculture, an InternationalStudents Summit on Food, Agriculture and Environment in the New Century is held. Students from twelvecountriesandareaintheworldparticipatedanddiscussedaboutpresentconditionsandfutureissuesonfood,agriculture and environment. With this opportunity, we air our opinions and views raised in this SummitdocumentedinthisTokyoDeclaration,whichweproposetotheworld.

1.Agriculture carries an important role of producing food for mankind to live. With the remarkablepopulation increase since the 1950s, food production has been greatly increased through the GreenRevolution, but negative effects to the environment and health occurred due to the intensive use ofchemical fertilizers and agricultural pesticides. For now and the coming years, global food productionincreaseandpovertyalleviationarevitalandagricultureplaysanimportantrole.“Therefore,weaimatsustainabledevelopmentintheNewCenturythroughtherecognitionofthevalueofagricultureasalifeindustry,andtherespectoftheuniqueecosystemandwisdomofeachregion.Throughthecollaborationbetweentraditionalagricultureknowledgeandwisdom,andmodernscienceandtechnology,weendeavortodevelopenvironment-friendlytechnologiesandproductionsystems.Eventually,wehopetodevelopandpromote a new form of organic agriculture which will meet social, economic and environmentalrequirements.”

2.Basedonscienceandtechnologydevelopment,variousnewtechnologiesarebeingdevelopedandspreadinthe agricultural field.Among them, biotechnology, especiallyGeneticallyModifiedOrganisms(GMO) isconsidered the mainstream technology. Consumers also have strong concerns regarding GM crops andfoods. “Therefore,we recognize thepotentials ofbiotechnology includingGMObasedon judgmentwithrightknowledge.Atthesametime,we,asagriculturalstudents,needtostudyandresearchmoreaboutthesafetyofbiotechnologyespeciallyGMOinrelationtohumanhealthandenvironment,andwehavearoleofdisseminatingresult-relatedinformationtoconsumers.”

3. In each region, history gave birth to food culture and molded people. By definition, food should beconsistently safe fromproduction to consumption. “Therefore,we create anewsystemwhereinwe cancontinuouslybesuppliedandbeabletoconsumesafefoods.Eachactorinthesystem,basedonthesocialinfrastructureprovidedandimprovedbythegovernment,shouldconsidertheimportanceofsafetyissuessuchaspesticideresiduesattheproductionlevel,andpostharvestandfoodadditiveusageproblemsattheprocessing and distribution levels. At the same time, we, as consumers, must think better of healthyregionalfoodcultureandareurgedtocooperateandunderstandtheaddedcostsforcommoditiesthatareproducedinasafeandenvironmentallyfriendlyway.”

4.Nowadays,althoughtradeliberalizationisprogressingundertheWTOsystem,allcountriesandareasdonothaveaccesstofairfooddistributionbecauseeconomicinfrastructureandsocialinfrastructuregapsstillexist.“Therefore,wepromoteRegionalSelf-sufficiencymainlyforstaplefoodsbymakinguseoftheuniqueecosystemsandregionalindividualityfromthelocalpointofview.Then,intheglobalpointofview,foodself-sufficiencyinthewholeofAsiacanbeachievediffoodself-sufficiencyispromotedineacharea.”

5. In the years to come, we, the students have a huge role to play. More international cooperation isencouraged through human resource exchange and sharing knowledge to overcome barriers such asacademicdisciplinesandgeographicborders.“Therefore,we,asthecoregroupconsistingofstudentsfromthirteen(13)countriesandareas,aimtocreateanInternationalStudentsNetwork.Also,weshareanewandsamevalue,whereinweneedtocreateanewsocialsystemwhereanenvironmentallybenefitingandsafefoodproduction,distribution,processingandconsumptionexist.”

Food Safety Weshallreviewourrespectivedietarylife,conductsurveysandresearchonfoodfromfarmtotable,

andupdatethepublicaboutrecentfindings. Weshallencouragestrict labelingof food.Weshallchargeappropriatesocialresponsibilitiestoany

companyfoundtohavecommittedfoodsafetyviolation.

Food Security We shall reduce foodwastes.We shall avoid over consumption to conserve resources andpromote

health. Weshallconsumewhatisneededratherthanwhatisdemanded,onthebasisofenergy-savinglocal

productionandlocalconsumptionframework. Weshallpromotehomeproductionoffoodusinganyavailablespace.

Students Network Weshallestablishthe“InternationalStudentsForum,”onfood,agricultureandenvironment. Asabody,weshallactivelylobbyandtakeactionsonrelevantissues,andrepresentyouthinnational

andinternationalconferences.

Theaboveactionplanshallserveasthebasisforthecountryorarealevelactionplanstobemadeby students of the respective participating university. Thus, we urge the participating universities tomaketheirrespectiveactionplanassoonaspossible.

Agricultural science plays a vital role in solving the fundamental problems of human beings in relation to food, environment, human health, and natural resources and energy. Because food production and consumption systems are closely related to the condition of the natural environment, the stage of economic development and food culture in each country and area, their patterns and problems reflect regional characteristics, requiring a multiple region-oriented approach. Tokyo University of Agriculture organized the International Students Summit on Food, Agriculture and Environment in the New Century in 2001 and adopted the “Tokyo Declaration”. In line with the action plan adopted at the 2nd International Students Summit in 2002, we hereby agree to organize the International Students Forum (ISF), a students’ network for the betterment of food, agriculture, and environment problems.

1. ObjectiveInternational Students Forum(ISF) promotes information exchange and discussion among the students ofagricultural and other related sciences, in order to solve the problems common to human beings, such asenvironmentalconservation,developmentofharmoniousfoodproductionandestablishmentoffoodsafety.

2. Organization・ ISFconsistsofCommitteesofInternationalStudentsForumsetupintheparticipatinguniversities.・ Members of the respective ISF Committees play an active part while in school and resign from ISF

automaticallyattheirgraduation.・ EachISFCommitteedecidesthemattersonthemanagementrespectivelyineachcountryandarea.

3. Role・ ISFMembersconstantlymakeefforttowardsolutionsoftheproblemscommontohumanbeingssuchas

Since2001,theInternationalStudentsSummit(ISS)hasbeenthevenueforstudentdiscussionsonrelevantglobal issueson food,agricultureandenvironment.Duetothecallfor a students’ network as documented in the adopted “Tokyo Declaration” and “ActionPlan”,theInternationalStudentsForum(ISF)wasestablishedin2002.Intotal,therehavebeenmore than 400 student-participants fromaround theworld.Most of ushave alreadygraduatedandarenowpartoftheworkingsociety.UsingtheknowledgeandexperiencewegainedintheISS,wearenowplayinganactiveroleindifferentfieldsinvariouscountries.However, therehavebeen limitedopportunities tomeetandexchange informationamongourselves.Therefore,wehaveestablishedthe“GlobalNetworkforEnvironment,FoodandAgriculture(GlobalNEFA)”asanalumniassociationofISS/ISF.

Objective Basedontheadopted“TokyoDeclaration”and“ActionPlan”,theorganizationaimstocontributetothesustainabledevelopmentoftheinternationalsociety.

themembersofISF,inthelanguageoftheparticipant’scountriesoforigin.4.Anewsletter shouldbedelivered regularly topast andpresent ISSparticipants.This

newsletterwouldincludeupdatesfromalumniandtheISF.

We have recognized that in order to improve the current structure of the ISS, thefollowingideasmustbeimplemented:

1.EstablishtheISFineachpartneruniversity.2.Support of the ISS student presenters must be maintained, both through the partner

universitiesandISF-Japan.3.Createnewpartnershipswithuniversities,inordertorepresentpopulationdistribution

aroundtheworld.4.PromoteISSearlierintheschoolyear,inordertogenerateanewparticipantbase.

Throughtheimplementationofthesesuggestions,webelievethatthepromotionofthesustainabilityoffood,agricultureandenvironmentwillbeimproved.
