Every year about this time, when most people are drink-ing cider and stuffing socks

full of toys, we here at the 11thHour fall into that group of peoplewho the holidays stress out. Notonly do we have three papers toput out, money to try and collect, and year-end stuff to do, but wealso hit the road at Christmas.

Today, right after we get allthe papers delivered, we head toAmelia Island to visit with mybrother’s family and do my side ofthe family’s Christmas, and onTuesday as soon as we return weembark on the 13-hour drive toNorthern Michigan to visit withMeg’s family. We have to hurryback the day after Christmasthough, in order to get yet anotheredition out before the New Year.

Our plans on New Years Eve?Putting out papers. When ourschedule gets back to normal, andthe Ugly Sweater parties are over,we get to relax for a bit. So whatdo we want for Christmas? Just toget through the next couple of

weeks will be fine with me.In January we start planning

again for the 2011 Readers ChoiceAwards. The nomination ballot isnow up online. Check out ourFacebook page to nominate yourfavorite bars, restaurants, bandsand community champions. I real-ly don’t know yet what the awardshow will bring this year. We balkevery year, saying we don’t knowif we can do it again or top lastyear. But we always do, so I’msure that in late January chaos willbegin again.

We hope you all have a MerryChristmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks for reading.

Knuckle, a new documentarynow out on DVD, took twelveyears to make and gives aninside look at the world ofIrish travelers (gypsies), pay-ing close attention to thebare-knuckle fistfights fueledby disputes between rivalclans. That’s for sure on my

watch list this week. Due to my absence at the the-atre over the last several months, I’m also anticipat-ing going to see Mission Impossible, GhostProtocol and the new Sherlock Holmes install-ment as soon as they get here because that’s theonly place they’ll be fun to watch.

Christmas is coming, and if you need some

good stocking stuffers you might want to head overto Rodeo Beach, in Mercer Village. Anyone wholikes to be outside, be it on water or on land, willlove this place. They carry Patagonia now, andMerrell shoes. Also cool watches, sunglasses, bikes, and paddleboards are just a few of theitems I covet when I enter that store, and the listgoes on. Also, it’s owned by JJ Hobbs andChristyanne Gasper, two awesome ladies who weare lucky to have snagged here in Macon. ShopLocal. If you need something a little different foryour stocking stuffer snap up a Rock Candy Tourcertificate while they are available. Led byCapricorn princess Jessica Walden, you really can’tget any closer to what this town used to be likewhen it was home to stars like Otis Redding, and

the Allman Brothers. It’s $15 bucks for a walkingtour and $20 for a Trolley Tour, affordable for any-one and needed by everyone. Reserve your spoton the next Macon Music Walking Stroll, to be heldMonday, Dec. 26 at1 p.m. The group will meet atWashington Park and the cost is $15.

I entered the world of Duck Hunting this pastweekend. My friend, Slade Edwards, and I got upat 4:30 both Saturday and Sunday morning, put inthe Ocmulgee River in Twiggs County and rodeupriver to a blind where we saw plenty of birds fly-ing and shot at several zooming down the river. Ibecame addicted to the sport. Just being out onthe river that early is pretty awesome, even if a littlecold, and seeing his young lab Cash, swim out andretrieve a downed bird was worth the trip, by itself.

Alesson I learned shortly after moving to Macon fromNew York City a year and a half ago was to never missan important show. In New York, I could step back --

take a short hiatus from seeing live music -- and confidentlyassume that I could play catch-up. Here in Macon, the touringbands swing through infrequently, and the local acts need thesupport now -- not next week or next month.

This idea took a little time to get used to, but it has paid offin a number of ways.

I have heard beautiful music in Macon that I would havenever sought out elsewhere. I’ve seen arresting art work on thewalls of The 567, and the Contemporary Arts Exchange, andhave witnessed wonderful theater and dance performances atMacon State College and Mercer.

Granted, I have also seen some performances and worksthat I would just as soon forget, but they are the exception, anda small price to pay to participate in a fledgling, unpredictable, but excitingly diverse artistic scene.

As an 11th Hour reader, you most likely share similarviews on the importance of supporting artists, and the bars, per-formance spaces, galleries, and theaters that host them, and in

this column I will make every effort to avoid preaching to thechoir. Instead, I will report on the performances and exhibits, artists and club owners, fans and -- ocasionally -- detractors inthe hope of inspiring conversation and -- more importantly --participation. In the past two weeks, my efforts to be presenthave been truly tested by a hectic work schedule and the franticlead-up to the holidays, but I was able to catch some great per-formances around town.

On First Friday at Roasted -- the coffee shop by day, barand performance space by night -- I caught ClarkAfterDarka.k.a Clark Bush coaxing jazz and pop loops from a paper-back-sized sampler, patching in beats and fragments of songwith a touch of the finger to perfect a groove. The diverse andappreciative audience took in Clark’s ethereal blend of SunRa, Pharoah Sanders and Joanna Newsom while sipping beerand perusing artist William Dantzler’s mixed-media workshanging on the walls.

DJ Roger Riddle closed out the night with a supremelysoulful set that mixed nineties staples by the Fugees and a sam-ple of an Eminem tune with classic soul strains from JamesBrown and Bill Withers. By the time Withers’ soaring, ecstaticfinal chorus on “Lovely Day” came across the speakers every-one was on their on their feet.

Last week, I also got a chance to hear the David Milligantrio perform an inspired set of jazz and Christmas standards atthe Vineville home of Edward and Priscilla Esser as part of theJazz Association of Macon’s annual Holiday Jam. Since themid-1980’s the Jazz Association has fostered the appreciation ofjazz in middle Georgia through concerts, classes and communi-ty outreach. Their holiday party was low-key -- especially incomparison to their annual Jazz and Arts on Riverdale festival -- but was a great opportunity to hear swinging music and meetsome fellow music lovers.

15DAYS INTERVIEW BY BRAD EVANS

Prolific funny man, actor, author and stand-upcomedian/ranter Lewis Black will be live onstageat The Grand as part of his 'In God We Rust' tour.

His live performances provide a cathartic release ofanger and disillusionment for the audience. He is a pas-sionate performer and enraged optimist. Lewis is therare comic who can cause an audience to laugh them-selves into incontinence while making compelling pointsabout the absurdity of our world.

Lewis Black rose to national prominence throughappearances on 'The Daily Show' and subsequent spe-cials on Comedy Central. In 2001 he won the Best MaleStand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has alsoproduced six comedy CD albums including the 2007Grammy Award-winning 'The Carnegie HallPerformance.'

I know you probably get asked this at the onset ofevery interview, but what are you angry about today?Yeah, well uh, I tell you. I’m angry with a lot. It’s notlike it gets better every day like it used to. But today, Iguess, I’m angry about the fact that if we’re goingnowhere as a country, how come it’s taking us so long toget there.

Have you ever played Macon GA, What do youknow about Macon? I have played Macon at a corpo-rate event at a comedy club there. It must have been 15years ago. I of course know about the music that comesout of there. I know that the Allman Brothers Band camefrom there. I actually saw them when they were allintact, the original, with Duane.

Yeah I saw you onstage with Warren Haynes atBonaroo a few years back. I wondered if you were afan or if you were just there. No I’m a huge fan. Ireally am.

Any thoughts on how your act goes over in a south-ern town? Do you play it any differently?Well I don’t change much, and that probably explainswhy ticket sales are always slow. My act becomes a littleslower sometimes, because my timing is really fast or atleast it used to be so I may slow down how fast I talksome. When I talk about religion I pull my foot off thethrottle, but I still say the same shit.

You went on a USO tour not long ago. How was that?I did three USO tours at Christmas and it was awesome.

Really life changing. The only thing it can compare to,and I’m sure some of your readers will understand this, the only thing it can compare to would be an LSD trip. Our military is an extraordinary group of people. Andour politicians only give them a bunch of lip servicewith all their dancing around. I find it ridiculous thatpoliticians talk about how great of a sacrifice it is to jointhe military and then put on the brakes when you ask arich person to put a few more dollars in the coffers. That’s way too much of a sacrifice. It’s bullshit.

Any presidential candidates out there right now thatdisgusts you more than the others?Uh. Yeah. I mean sure. Whoever told Rick Perry to runshould all be sent to counseling. It’s insulting. The factthat we allowed Donald Trump to pretend he was goingto run is insulting. Herman Cain was insulting. It wasn’tthe fact that he wasn’t prepared to be president thatderailed his campaign, but the fact that he was involvedin some sort of sexual harassment. The guy was a jokefrom the beginning. And that we can’t hold him to thatshows me that we’ve lost any sense of reality that Iknow about. I can get Bachman, I get Gingrich. I maynot like it but I get it. I get Ron Paul. But Santorum? No,I don’t get that. What he has said at times about gaypeople is beyond ignorance. It’s ignorance shadowedunder the cloak of religion.

After writing “I’m dreaming of a Black Xmas,” wereyou afraid that you’d get a bag of switches?Nah not really. It just came out in paperback actually sothat’s a good thing, right. It’s actually a book aboutbeing single, disguised as a Christmas book. A lot ofpeople get depressed around the holidays. That book isfor those people.

What are some of the things you’ll be discussing atyour upcoming show here? The Economy. The economy right now is really funnystuff. The Health Care System, riotous. I’ll be talkingabout legalizing pot, because enough is enough. I’ll alsobe talking about starting a new TV network where it justshows a steaming pile of shit 24 hours a day. This ismostly because I can’t get my own show.

Besides touring what’s next for you? Any books oranything you’ve been working on? I’m gonna startrunning guns. Maybe join a motorcycle gang. No, I havea new special coming out in January 2012, called In GodWe Rust. It’s on a channel nobody knows called EPIX,and will also be on Comedy Central as well.

How is your daily routine different from when youfirst started doing comedy? We do a lot more press these days. A lot of differentpress. When we come to town these days, we’re all overthe place. Now there is all this twitter nonsense. Myfriend, Katherine Madigan, got me drunk and I woke upthe next day and I was on twitter. It’s just harder to getpeople in. You’re competing with so much with every-thing going on. Now days, to let the people of Maconknow I’m coming, I have to barrage them and hope theyhear it.

What are you reading or watching or listening to? I’m reading a book on the Civil War, called “1861” ,andit’s not to prepare for my trip to the South. I’ve been lis-tening to Florence and the Machine and I’ve beenwatching Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, Hung, andDexter.

Cindy Baxter is Founder and President of e 3/50 Project, LLC. What started out as a “happy accident” in 2009 spawned from a simple blog post has now changed the way many consumers shop, especially during the holiday season. e premise is quite simple. Ask yourself, “What three independently owned businesses would you miss if they disappeared? en make an eort to spend $50 in those businesses every month.

It could be as simple as a $12 bottle of wine from Winestyles, and a hip, new Kavu bag from Karats & Keepsakes ($38). e thing is, if 50% of the employed population spent $50 a month at their favorite indie stores, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. For every $100 spent in independently owned businesses, $68 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll and other

expenditures. If you spend that same amount in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. So this holiday season, take a moment to explore all the unique items available just around the corner. e Macon Arts Gallery is hosting a trunk show, sales galore at Macon’s indie boutiques on Forsyth and Rodeo Beach is the only place in town where you can purchase a hip YOLO board (check it out below!

We want to see your 3/50 purchases! Send us a pic of your purchased items with a quick description of what you bought and where - for a chance to win a rockin’ stocking filled with local gift certificates.

The problem is several of the reasons that Savagecites are just not true. According to Savage:

•WHEN HE WAS SPEAKER OF THEHOUSE, GINGRICH FAILED TO DELIVERON HIS SO-CALLED CONTRACT WITHAMERICA. (Granted all of the participles of theContract With America did not get passed, butaccording to the Contract, "within the first 100days of the 104th Congress, we shall bring to theHouse Floor the following bills, each to be givenfull and open debate, each to be given a clear andfair vote and each to be immediately available thisday for public inspection and scrutiny." TheContract did in fact do this even though Congressshot down several of the items in the Contract andPresident Clinton vetoed others.) NON-ISSUE

•HE MADE ADS WITH NANCY PELOSIPROMOTING THE FALSE THEORY OFGLOBAL WARMING. (Ok...He made thecommercial in 2008. Number 1: In 2008 theUnited States was at the height of awarenessabout global warming. EVERYBODY was goinggreen. Number 2: Gingrich had just written abook called "Contract With The Earth". Number3: Like him or hate him, Gingrich always seemsto have his fingers on the pulse of America.Number 4: Gingrich has now calls this event 'thedumbest single thing I've done'. There is noquestion at all that Gingrich and Pelosi don't likeeach other. Gingrich has since called Pelosi "des-picable, dishonest and vicious". He and Pelosi arehardly picking out living room furniture together. As for global climate change, Gingrich sums it upon page 197 of his book, "We strongly believe thatentrepreneurial environmentalism is a superiorapproach to bureaucratic, litigious, unrestrained

regulation." And on page 191 he writes, "Thedevelopment of new technologies is the best wayto achieve significant reductions in carbon load-ing.") NON-ISSUE

•HE’S IN FAVOR OF AMNESTY FOR ILLE-GAL ALIENS. (This makes it sound likeGingrich wants to just hand over citizenship toanyone who floats in a boat from Haiti or swimsthe Rio Grande. On his website, Gingrich writes,"We need a system that enforces the rule of law, ensures that those who broke the law pay a stiffpenalty, but also acknowledges that it is neitheroptimal nor feasible nor humane to deport everysingle illegal immigrant....We need a path to legal-ity, but not citizenship, for some of these individ-uals who have deep ties to America, includingfamily, church and community ties. We also needa path to swift but dignified repatriation for thosewho are transient and have no roots in America....Applicants must first pass a criminal backgroundcheck, and then the local committees will assessapplications based on family and community ties, and ability to support oneself via employmentwithout the assistance of Social Security,Medicare, Medicaid, and other entitlement pro-grams....Once an applicant has been granted theright to obtain legal status, he or she will have topay a penalty of at least $5,000...Moving forward, those who receive this status will have to prove ona regular basis that they can support themselveswithout entitlement programs and pay for healthinsurance or else risk the ability to stay in theUnited States.") Please go to Newt.org to readhis entire stance on immigration. I'm trying tonot knock another candidate, but in contrastGovernor Romney doesn't even have an immi-gration proposal on his site. NON-ISSUE•HE’S TAKEN HUNDREDS OF THOU-SANDS OF DOLLARS FROM FANNIE MAEAND FREDDIE MAC, TWO OF THE MOSTCORRUPT FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS

IN HISTORY. (While it is true he did acceptmoney from both institutions, GovernorRomney has the same type of skeletons in hiscloset. When confronted about it on the cam-paign trail yesterday Gingrich shot back, "IfGovernor Romney would like to give back all themoney he’s earned from bankrupting companiesand laying off employees over his years at Bain, then I would be glad to then listen to him. And Iwill bet you $10, not $10,000, that he won’t takethe offer.”) POSSIBLE ISSUE but equal withRomney and still light years behind Obama's realestate deal with Tony Rezko.

•HE’S CHEATED ON TWO WIVES ANDLEFT BOTH OF THEM WHILE THEYWERE BOTH SERIOUSLY ILL, WHICHWILL DESTROY HIS CHANCES AMONGFEMALE VOTERS. (The story regarding thefirst wife is completely false as Gingrich’s daugh-ter Jackie has denied that her father did anythingwrong and that her mother wanted their divorce.Further the first Mrs. Gingrich is alive and well asshe was only having a benign tumor removedwhen Gingrich was discussing their divorce in thehospital. As for the events surroundingGingrich's second wife it is true he left her for hiscurrent wife.) POSSIBLE ISSUE but everyonehas a private life. See my previous columns aboutwhat I think of the medias’ scrutiny of candidates.

•HE CALLED THE REPUBLICAN PLANTO REFORM MEDICARE “RIGHT WINGSOCIAL ENGINEERING.” (Since he utteredthis, Gingrich backed off significantly. He per-sonally called Congressman Ryan and apologizedfor making the comment.) Possible Issue butRomneycare will be a much bigger albatross.WeArePolitics contributor Holly Robichaud, aresident of Massachusetts and writer for theBoston Globe wrote in April, ..."no party com-memorating the day or liberal praise from DevalPatrick is needed to derail former Gov. Mitt

Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. (Writingabout the celebration Patrick had on the 5thanniversary of the signing of Romneycare.)The damage was done five years ago when Mittorchestrated the bill-signing photo-op for theMassachusetts health-care mandate with thelate U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy and then-HouseSpeaker Sal DiMasi, who’s now facing a federaltrial on bribery charges."

•IN A PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AGAINSTOBAMA, REGARDLESS OF HOW WELL HEDOES, ON TELEVISION, HE WILL COMEOFF BADLY COMPARED TO OBAMA ANDLOOK LIKE NOTHING MORE THANWHAT HE IS: A FAT, OLD, WHITE MAN.And that folks should sum up the credibility thatMichael Savage has. There is no doubt thatPresident Obama comes off looking very sharpon television, but to blatantly say that SpeakerGingrich is an "fat, old, white man" is as racist anddegrading as now Vice-President Biden’s remarksthat Obama was "clean". NON ISSUE

I hate to break it to Mr. Savage, but the Americanpeople could care less what the GOP candidateactually looks like. They do, however, care aboutwhat that candidate can do to get this countryback on track. Any of the GOP candidates makeObama look like a wall-flower on that front. Ohyeah...keep in mind that Michael Savageendorsed Jerry Brown for Governor of Californiaover Republican Meg Whitman. He's hardly astalwart of Conservatism. Another talk show hostMark Levin has offered Michael Savage $10,000to quit radio. In your own words Savage, take themoney and run.

Oh yeah, and if you haven’t figured it outsince Herman Cain has left the presidential racefor good, I am endorsing Georgia’s other favoriteson former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

Controversial radio talk show host Michael Savage, citing several reasons why

he can't defeat President Obama, has offered presidential candidate and former

Speaker of The House Newt Gingrich $1 million dollars to drop his bid for the

GOP nomination. Savage goes on to tell Gingrich to 'put his ego aside' and 'if

he really loves the country as much as he says' to do what's right for America'

and 'take the money'.

Ibegan working in political campaignswhen I was in high school and I’m now abattle-scarred veteran of many on the

national, state, and local levels. In all thoseyears, I’ve never encountered a better tacti-cian and vote-counter than Robert Brown. When I first met him, he was leading a suc-cessful effort to save the Douglass Theatre, having already saved two historic schoolbuildings when he was an elected member ofthe school board. As an arts advocate and astudent of history, I was impressed by hisactions and we became friends – or as much afriend as Robert would allow. He was alwaysreserved and held his cards close to his vest, atrait which caused some to regard him asaloof. The truth was, if he had something tosay, he would shout it from the rooftops (justask Edwina Barnes how he signed on to heranimal protection campaign when no otherelected official thought it worthy of time andeffort). But most of the time, he learned farmore by listening not only to words but toinflections and nuances that many otherswould have missed. Perhaps it was a trait hemastered while he was a member of one ofMercer University’s first integrated classes.

On election day at 7:00 a.m. he was at atable laden with telephones and, except forquick bathroom visits, he never left it until thepolls closed that evening. I’ve watched himcall a poll watcher mid-day to learn voterturnout in a particular precinct then, hearingthe response, immediately order reinforce-

ments to knock on doors and drive voters totheir precinct. To this day I don’t know howhe knew who and when to call but it alwaysworked. At least it worked until his mostrecent humiliating loss in the mayor’s pri-mary race. By that point his bag of magictricks was depleted.

When Robert’s health took such a publicdecline a few years ago (his walk was notice-ably affected), everyone wanted to know thecause. The closest he would come to ananswer was that it was “a little stomach prob-lem but I’m fine.” That was never enough tostop the whispers of those who thought theyhad some kind of personal right to know hismost intimate secrets. Those vicious soulsseem to think elected officials are insensitiveto callous and hurtful comments. On the dayafter Robert’s death, a reader posted on theTelegraph’s comments page about the story afervent wish that two other named electedofficials should follow Robert’s example. Thecomment was allowed to remain online foreveryone to see.

In light of Robert Brown’s suicide andthat of Warner Robins Mayor Donald Walker, can’t journalists and media hosts at least agreeto be civil when discussing elected officialsand not stoop to personal attacks and invec-tive remarks? Perhaps their readers and listen-ers would follow their example. As AbrahamLincoln taught us, “He has the right to criti-cize who has a heart to help.” Most of thesenaysayers have no intention of helping andsome appear to have hardened their heartslong ago.

Some have said that Robert’s death wasattributable to his financial challenges and

money owed, citing the expense of his mostrecent mayoral campaign. I don’t know any-one in the real estate business whose incomehasn’t been negatively affected by the econ-omy, and Robert’s last financial disclosurefor his mayoral campaign shows a bit morethan $10,000 still on hand. The truth is thathis colon cancer was back. It almost killedhim the last time and he still wore a colosto-my bag from that experience. He was toldonly recently that the cancer had returnedand there were few treatment options left. Iwas assured by someone very close toRobert that the medicine he was takingclearly warned that it could cause depressionand suicidal tendencies.

I was told the night of Robert’s deaththat I had made a great error in endorsing himfor mayor. The truth is that, while I was mis-taken about the likelihood of his victory, Idon’t regret my endorsement for a moment.Robert’s many successes in looking after

Macon’s interests were better known inAtlanta than they were here (when the stateproposed building a highway directly throughmy neighborhood, it was Robert who stoppedit in its tracks). In a state senate full of power-ful and effective legislators with super-sizedegos, his peers elected him as MajorityLeader then kept him as Minority Leaderwhen the Senate changed hands. Unlike otherpoliticians, it wasn’t in his nature to boast ofhis accomplishments. Perhaps if he had, theresults in Macon’s mayoral primary wouldhave been different.

As for my friend Robert Brown, I wishfor him the peace he could not find in thoselast dark hours when he must have felt all

alone. I cannot imagine the utter despair thatled him to such an end, but I do know hedeserved much better. As the Old Testamentteaches us in Isaiah 57:2, Let peace come, lethim rest in his bed that hath walked in hisuprightness.

You worked for the CherryBlossom Festival before cominghere right? I did. I was the eventscoordinator for the CherryBlossom Festival, which includedthe Street Party. A tornado kind ofruined that this year, but we didhave some good talent lined up soit was a lot of fun putting together.

How you liking it so far? This is a fantastic opportunity. Iwas very fortunate. I’d be remissnot to mention those that werehere before me. Peggy did a greatjob overseeing the renovations aswell as Greg Potter and EJ is awalking book of knowledge on theABB. I walked into a great spot, because of those people who didsome fantastic work ahead of me.

What’s your main goal at themuseum? Fundraising is obvious-ly a big goal. We rely heavily ondonors to keep our doors open. Sowe depend on Citizens in Macon,as well as citizens throughout thecountry and the world to help uskeep this thing going. What’s your favorite item in themuseum? It sounds a little weird, but probably one of the tablesfrom H&H from back in the daywhen the Brothers used to eat

there every day. It just representsthe community that their musichelp inspire. I mean they wouldhave starved if it weren’t forMama. And to have that table inhere, just makes me smile.

Do you see that type of commu-nity in Macon Music today? Yesand No. Being from here I remem-ber when the brothers were herewalking around downtown. It was-n’t uncommon to see big stars justwalking around. And you still seea strong support for our localmusic. And we’ve progressed withHip-Hop and Country, though backthen it was primarily SouthernRock. In that sense it’s better, evenmore diverse. Are we the Meccathat we were back then? No. Butcan we get there again? Absolutely.

Where do you see the Museumin 10 years? I want this to be sort of a mini-Graceland. A real destination formusic fans around the world. Iwas just talking to QuickBookscustomer support. This guy was inthe Philippines, and he was a hugeAllman Brothers fan. People allover the world feel that way. Ireally think it has the potential tobe a crown jewel of Macon.

Trendlenberg @ The RookeryCutway writes hushed, subtle songs that pro-vide lush illustrations of the world with asense of wonder and humor. Cutway’s lyricsare filled with imagery taken from nature andsentiments borrowed from simpler times. Hissongs bypass the common singer/songwriterhabit of naked introspection. The songs arepersonal, yes, but a far cry from the girl, drugs, and heartbreak route favored by hispeers. The music Cutway adds to these lyricscan range from a few notes gently plucked onnylon strings with sparse arrangements offound sounds to a full on guitar rock explosionpowered by multiple riffs and thunderousrhythms. At the Rookery This night, he’s goingto be going with the Thunderous Rhythms sopay attention. Seriously, he’s been our favoritesongwriter in Macon for years.

Your current album "Between the Living and the Dying" is available atGolden Bough books here in Macon, tell us about the album?Yes, it is! Thanks to GB for hosting it - it's also available on iTunes andAmazon. I recorded the song at the Smoakstack and Wide studios in EastNashville with Andy Hunt. It was amazing to have musicians who playwith some of my favorite artists (Dave Barnes, Matt Kearney, etc.) comingin to play on my record! The songs are autobiographical. In songwriting,I'm honestly just trying to make sense of my life. Hopefully that helps oth-ers make a little sense of their own lives as well. In that way, I hope itreminds us that we're all in this thing together. Favorite song? "BetterThan Me." It's a song I wrote for Emma James (my daughter) before shewas born.

Georgia musicians are taking over the radio airwaves and seem to begiving each other a helping hand. Sugarland asks Zac Brown to tour,he makes it. Jason Aldean gets Luke Bryan on tour, Brown touringwith one of our faves Sonia Leigh this summer, etc... Who would youlove to tour with? Georgia is definitely making it's mark on music, andhas been for some time. These days, a lot of GA artists are making a goodrun in the Country Music Market. 10 years ago it was John Mayer redefin-

ing the singer/ songwriter. 15 years agoit was the Indigo Girls, and 20 years agoyou had the B-52's and REM making arun at Rock/Pop. You can go back as faras you'd like to, GA has been well-repre-sented for sure. As for me, I'd love totour with John or with Sugarland. We allcame up playing at Eddie's Attic togetherand they're actually really nice people.I'd be happy to ride in on their coat-tails!

How have you personally seen theATL music scene change over the lastfew years? I would say there are a lotmore white boys with acoustic guitarsnow than there where when I first start-ed. Which makes finding your niche andstanding out a bit more difficult, but italso raises the bar. I'd also say people area lot more picky (or intentional) aboutthe shows they attend. I don't think thatis the ATL music scene so much as it isthe economy and people generally beingmore mindful of how they spend theirmoney.

Name a song you've listened to in thepast 24 hours? Honestly? Fine. "Whereare You Christmas" from the movie,"The Grinch." as sung by Cindy-LouWho I'm watching it w/ my 20 monthold girl...and...I like it too!

Whose band t-shirt do you wearproudly? Josh Ritter. Amazing lyricist.

Who would we be surprised to learn isin your music collection? Lionel Richie

Recommend a band our readers musthear now? Darrell Scott. Darrell haswritten many country songs that peopleknow ("Great Day to Be Alive" by TravisTritt, "Long Time Gone" by DixieChicks, etc.) But I have never seensomeone that can write, sing, and play(Lord, can he play!) like Darrell Scott.Do yourself a favor and check him out.LIVE is the best listening experience andhe plays in GA a couple times a year. You can also get him on iTunes or atdarrellscott.com

Seems you'll be making 3 appearancesnext week in Macon. What is yourfavorite indie restaurant or landmark? My favorite restaurants in Macon areFountain of Juice and Natalia's. I lovethe food, and the people there treat youlike family, which i appreciate as much asthe food. My favorite Macon landmarksare the Riverwalk (great place for a run!)and The Capitol Theatre where I'll beperforming my Christmas concertSaturday night!

With only one last column to write in 2011, I'd like to first take the opportunityto extend thanks to the group of people that have worked so hard that past 12months to continue to make this city a comfortable place to be, despite any

statistics that may have been published about our town. Macon will not be changingovernight, at least any time soon. The sooner that we understand that and combine ourefforts, the better we will be. So, to Brad & Meagan Evans, Gateway Macon, NewTown,Keith Watson, New City & The 567 Center, everyone involved with Cherry Blossom,Bragg Jam, the Film Festival and all the other citywide events, Main Street Macon,Macon Noise, all of the local business owners, operators, and staff, The 11th Hour Staff,College Corridor, our cities employee's, and most importantly, all of you who want thebest for Macon, whether you live Downtown or North Macon, whether you read thispaper or strictly the AJC, as long as you're doing what you can to improve your life andyour neighbor's than you're alright by me. No one agrees on everything and they neverwill, but we owe it to one another to at least hear our respective opinions out before wemake assumptions or criticize each other. If I forgot to mention you, please excuse me.I'm still coming down from anesthesia, but I mean every word. Now to what you actu-ally read this article for…

This Friday (16th), Justin Cutway brings his project Trendlenberg to TheRookery for both an acoustic opening set followed by a full band. Justin is a talented

songwriter who occasionally tosses in covers from both American classics and fromlocal artists as well. It's sure to be a good time and you can show up early and get oneof the Rookery's signature burgers.

Speaking of burgers and live music, The 11th Hour Reader's Choice Awardnominations are now online so head over to either the 11th Hour Facebook or theirwebsite and nominate the things you love about Macon. Categories range from"Hottest Wait Staff" to "Favorite Street Personality". The event is always an amazingtime with big surprises each year.

The next night (Saturday 17th) brings what promises to be the biggest hardcoreshow of the year to Macon's Downtown. Atlanta, Georgia based group HeartcakeParty bring their rapid-hitting, sample based melodic hardcore to The 567 Center, alongside Warner Robins bands Death Came For The Archbishop and Alert TheMessenger, plus two other out of town bands. Heartcake Party hasn't played Maconsince the Summer of 2009 and they we're a hit then. Things have only improved forthem since, so I'm looking forward to the crowd that they'll bring out.

To keep things rolling, Xavii and brother-band Tanosweg are bringing their pro-gressive noise to Warner Robins for a free show at The Hanger on Tuesday the 20th.I have never, ever been to a show in Warner Robins, so this might be an opportunity Ishould take advantage of. I also hear that they've opened up a new venue down theircalled Rock Bottom and that it's worth checking out. The very next night is a show thatI've been looking forward to for quite some time. The deal was sealed for me when I wassitting at The Hummingbird one night and Al King was sitting down with a ring ofdrinks around him playing Goldeneye for N64 on his Droid. That alone was reason forme to get behind his work (not to mention he's one hell of an artist). King, Te Treebay(Jowin & Sabir), Elhae and a variety of artists dubbed under King's performancemoniker "Universal Kingdom" will be taking the stage for what might be the only hip-hop showcase Macon has seen this year. Best part of all, these cool cats want you tocome hang out and save your money so they've made it a FREE show. You can't beatthat. This all goes down at The 567 Gallery Stage.

Make sure you get your Christmas shopping done before everyone gets crazy withconsumer fury ("men be all like zombies at the mall when women be shopping.."). Tryyour best to do your shopping at locally owned businesses. I promise that it's possibleto get just about all of your Christmas needs taken care of at places throughout the city.Yes, it does require you to drive a bit and you don't get to spend all day making yourwish lists on Amazon, J Crew, or Urban Outfitters, but you do get to have the interac-tion with people that are very well your neighbors. They'll appreciate it much more, you'll hopefully feel good about supporting your community.. A win/win sort of thing.

And now, for a list of happenings on my favorite day of the year. There's someamazing shows going on all around Georgia this New Years Eve, but no matter whereyou spend your evening, it's sure to be a party. • B.B. KING @ The Macon City Auditorium• The Cherry Blossom Festival Ball Drop @ Terminal Station (Macon)• Cake @ Fox Theatre (Atlanta)• The Constellations @ Smith's Old Bar (Atlanta)• The Whigs @ 40 Watt (Athens)• Noot d' Noot @ Star Bar (Atlanta)• Perpetual Groove @ Center Stage (Atlanta)• Peach Drop Celebration @ Underground Atlanta• Reptar @ Georgia Theatre (Athens)

2011 has been an eventful year. We've improved onwhat we needed to from the last few years and we'renow aware of what we can do better the next 366days. Remember to make your resolutions, stickwith them, and stock up on black-eye pea's and col-lard greens. After all, we are in Macon.

CHRIS HORNE

Ionly met former state Senator RobertBrown a couple of times. We never hadany real conversation. I never could tell

if he knew me, and frankly I figured if hedid, he probably didn’t like me much. After all, his friend and supporter was mypolitical opponent in the July primary, andthings had gotten bitter. On Thursday,December 8, I found myself—like manyMaconites—remembering that there are somany things that matter more than politics.I hate to admit this, but that understandingcame on like an epiphany, perhaps becausepolitics have polarized us so much (onevery level) that mudslinging has becomethe de facto language of our exchanges. Though I never said much more than helloto Senator Brown, I didn’t think twice togloat about his defeat in the primary formayor. I’m ashamed of myself for it, andfurther, I’m ashamed it took this to wakeme up. I may have avoided slander—neverstooping so low as to call him names oranything—but I took too much joy in hisloss. I did the same thing, repeatedly, withformer state Representative David Lucas.Maybe I was bitter about my own defeat ormaybe I regressed to childhood where suchtaunts are supposed to stay. Regardless, itwas wrong and I regret it.

It is hypocritical of me to decry thevenomous nature of our present politicalsituation and then contribute to it myself. An eye for an eye makes the world blind. The greatest disservice, however, is that itrepresents my failure to recognize whatSenator Brown has done for our communi-ty. The evidence of his service is not hardto find, and if there is anything good tocome of his passing, it is that his work hasbeen brought to the forefront.

There is one thing he did that may beoverlooked for a long time because itsimpact is still being felt. If we achieveconsolidation of Macon and Bibb County,Senator Brown will have helped make thathappen. I can freely admit that I did notalways appreciate the positions he took orthe way he tried to enforce his will, andduring last year’s drive closer to consolida-tion, I often thought he was an obstruction-ist. But what has become clear since bothhis proposal and state Representative AllenPeake’s proposal failed is that whetherintentionally or not, Senator Brown createda long-needed community dialogue aboutwhat we want to see happen.

My belief on this goes beyond simplyagreeing with some parts (having a policechief) and disagreeing with others (contin-uing to have partisan elections). It comesout of the fact that for all the talk aboutconsolidation, this community has rarely—if ever—had enough tangibles to actuallydiscuss the matter intelligently. Thatprocess began with the counter proposalSenator Brown and Senator Cecil Statonmade through their compromise, which

itself was somewhat surprising but alsotelling of the late senator’s strengths.

That, though, was just the seed. Thisyear we’ve seen it blossom in the hands ofour largely new Bibb County Delegation, who have carried on the service thatSenator Brown made his trademark. In thewake of last year’s efforts, we have seenthe local delegation host communityforums to get feedback from residents andto share information that clarifies theprocess and some of the particulars. We’veseen the same bipartisan efforts that typi-fied the work Senators Brown and Statondid for consolidation continued both behindclosed doors and out in the public eye. We’ve seen our fragmented communitycome together in surprising ways, like thegroup of local business leaders—half blackand half white—who have weighed in withtheir recommendations for consolidation.

At the end of the day, you don’t haveto agree with Robert Brown’s message, hispolitics or his method, but you should givehim the respect he is due. There are tons ofpersonal stories that tell the little things hedid for people and their families. There arestacks of news clippings that recall thebills he sponsored and causes he champi-oned. But as we stand here now lookingback, the measure of this man is evident inhow many lives he continues to effect.

Is there anything Republicans andDemocrats can agree on?A: I’m really starting to doubt it, and ifthey keep that up, the one thing mostAmericans will find themselves agreeing

about is that it’s a waste of time andmoney to vote with either the Republicanor Democratic Party.

Here’s a golden opportunity to fixthat: Criminal Justice reform. The state ofGeorgia is examining a serious and long-needed reform of our criminal justice sys-tem. And it’s being led by Republicans, including Governor Nathan Deal whoseson is a judge that has been quite vocalabout the need. Let me say that again: con-servatives are advocating alternative sen-tencing, new sentencing guidelines fordrug offenders and giving judges more dis-cretion instead of tying their hands withmandatory minimum sentencing.

Today, one in every 70 adults inGeorgia is under state supervision, and as aresult, the state budget for “corrections” isabout $1 billion annually. We incarcerate ata clip higher than all but three other states. And the reason why? Democrats in the1990’s, led by then-Governor Zell Miller(and helped by Democrats like our now-Mayor, then-Representative RobertReichert), ushered in an era of “gettingtough on crime” that included the two-strikes laws and imprisonment without thepossibility of parole that have filled ourprisons and is starting to return many felonsback to the streets without supervision orassistance. What have we gotten for that? Our recidivism rate hasn’t changed a bit sopeople are still getting out of prison andcommitting crimes and going back.

There has to be a better way and I’mcrossing my fingers the state’s Republicansand Democrats can agree on that.

In the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggledliving in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially with-drawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution forschizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought thatHoward could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband,Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howardcontinued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip tothe family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found thebodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15,2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred hadbeen beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained:

Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugi-tive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I amcrossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.Only yourselves to blame.

For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camphe constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He wasfeatured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend ofthe 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In itthree journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a seriesof pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
