Our first meeting of the Fall is around the corner… I’d like to thank all the sponsors of our annual golf outing. Without them we would have to charge much more and would not have the selection of prizes that we do each and every year. Thanks for continuing to support the OGS Golf Outing even though times are tough. Thanks to all that came out to play, too. This year was the biggest year yet! The first meeting of the year has been set for Wednesday, November 4. Mark Jones, from the Ohio Division of Geological Survey, will be presenting the work that he has helped lead involving coastal erosion along the shores of Lake Erie. Lunch starts at 11:30 and Mark’s talk is scheduled for a 12:30 start. Please RSVP to Steve Zody.

Our second meeting of the year will be held in conjunction with Ohio-AIPG on Thursday, November 19th. The following announcement is taken from Ohio-AIPG’s Web site:

Our guest speaker will be Mr. Bob Evans. Mr. Evans is best known for his work with the S.S. Central America, a California Gold Rush era steamship that sank in 1857 carrying tons of gold coins, bars, nuggets and dust. In 1983 Bob was recruited to take charge of the historical and scientific research involved in the search for the fabled treasure ship. The shipwreck site was located in 1986 using side-scanning sonar, and its identity was confirmed in 1988 when the first coins and bars were brought to the surface. The gold was recovered from a depth of a mile and a half, from the Atlantic seabed 170 miles off the Carolina coast. If you have not done so already, please mark your calendars for the GSA Annual meeting October 18-21 or the 2009 OOGA Fall Technical Conference on October 20. Please visit the Society Web site for other meetings and events listed for October and November. Chris Gordon

Recession News Isn't Always Bad: Coastal Erosion Mapping in Ohio

D. Mark Jones, CPG Ohio Division of Geological Survey

Ohio’s Coastal Erosion Area (CEA) program was conceived to address erosion problems on Ohio’s Lake Erie coast. The CEA program was a response to decades of land loss, infrastructure damage, and haphazard shore protection structure designs that were ineffective and sometimes worsened erosion problems. The CEA program maps coastline areas likely to be impacted by erosion in the next 30 years, and these areas are subject to certain requirements for building or further development. Map creation starts with aerial photographs, which serve as the base maps onto which historical shorelines are traced. The historical shoreline and the shoreline on the aerial photographs are digitized, and GIS calculates the distance between the shorelines and the yearly rate of recession. The yearly recession rate is multiplied by 30 to arrive at a 30-year anticipated recession distance, which is plotted onto the base map. Landowners can use the maps to determine if their properties are affected. The first CEA maps were finalized in 1998, and an updated set of maps is due to be released soon. The maps will show that the amount of Ohio’s coastline in a 30-year recession zone has declined by about two-thirds since the first maps were finalized. The reduction is most likely due to lower lake levels and increasing amounts of shoreline protection.

October 1, 2009

Greetings Fellow Ohio Geological Society Members,

Last Thursday’s Ohio AIPG Section meeting at La Scala was so well attended that we nearly hit the maximum capacity of the meeting room. Chris Krumm’s informative presentation, Climate Change, a Geological Perspective was very well prepared, delivered, and received by those in attendance. The comprehensive presentation cites many of the references accompanying the Ohio AIPG Section position statement opposing House Bill H.R. 2454. The position statement is posted on the Ohio Section website http://www.aipg-ohio.org/, and is available for download.

Several meeting attendees requested a copy of Chris’s Power Point presentation and Chris has graciously provided them on an individual basis. As a courtesy to both Chris, and to other interested parties who would like to look into this topic further, or who were unable to attend the meeting but would like to review the presentation materials, the Ohio Section will be posting Chris’s presentation on our website http://www.aipg-ohio.org/ , this Monday (October 5) for a limited time. Viewing the Power Point slides is a poor substitute for the live presentation, but it does allow more time to delve into the wealth of information that Chris has assembled. It should be noted that last Thursday’s presentation included only slides 1 through 67; the others were removed from the talk due to time constraints, but were available in the event they were needed for the question and answer session that followed the talk. Thanks again Chris for all of your efforts in sharing with us your specialized knowledge!

Several OGS members were present at Chris’s presentation. Thank you for attending! I hope that all OGS members will consider it an open invitation to attend any and all Ohio AIPG meetings and functions. Amy Lang does a great job of keeping us informed of upcoming events with the OGS Calendar in each monthly newsletter.

Special thanks also to Steve Zody who did the work on an entire committee by authoring the OGS position paper on “Cap and Trade”. Both position papers did a great job of confining our statements to our area of expertise as scientists and avoiding political rhetoric which, unfortunately, is the hallmark of this issue. Nothing in either statement is anti-progress or anti-conservation. Clearly we need both, but we must recognize that the solutions to our dependence on foreign energy sources will have come from innovation not legislation. As a driller friend often says: “If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it”!

I also wish to update you on the status of House Bill H.R. 2454, the Markey-Waxman “cap & trade” bill. This week, Senator Jeff Bingham, chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and Senator Barbara Boxer, chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee, each introduced the bill to their respective committees for debate. On a state level, the Ohio Senate passed Senate Concurrent Resolution (SRC) 15 on June 30, 2009, urging the U.S Congress to oppose the bill. The resolution has not yet passed the Ohio House of Representatives.

Don’t forget to save the date of November 19, 2009 for a joint meeting that will be co-hosted by Ohio AIPG and the Ohio Geological Society as a means of sharing the cost of bringing to both groups a nationally recognized speaker who will be presenting a popular topic that we hope will be entertaining and informative to both geologic organizations and their guests. I’ll be looking forward to seeing you all then.

Best regards,

Frank L. Majchszak, Ohio Geological Society Trustee
