The Senior Center of West Seattle infuses warm friendships, healthy activities and joyful experiences into life as people age. We are a welcoming, inclusive place to laugh and learn while finding support for basic needs that foster both independence and engagement with others — a place where seniors, their families and their neighbors can celebrate life and participate meaningfully in our community.

Thank You, Volunteers! On October 9th, SCWS held our annual volunteer appreciation party to show our enormous love and gratitude to the over 200 volunteers who donate their time, skill, and care who make it possible to do all that we do. Receptionists, Stop ‘N Shop, Meals on Wheels, Special Events, Kitchen, Cafe, Data Entry, Decorations, Rainbow Bingo, Repairs, Outreach, Newsletter, Bartenders, Board Members, Photographers, Class Instructors...So, so many volunteers!

This year’s celebration was extra special in that we honored long-term volunteer Jean Carroll with the first annual Jean Carroll Extraordinary Volunteer Service Award. Jean’s incredible ded-ication and commitment inspired us to create this award to recognize her 20+ years of volun-teer service. Not only are we honoring her this year, but this award will be given to a different volunteer each year who demonstrates these characteristics. Thank you, Jean, for the tens of thousands of hours of your time and expertise you have so generously given to the Center!

Again, so very many thanks to all of our wonder-ful volunteers! We couldn’t do any of this without you.

Thank you to all those who donated to our Volunteer Appreciation Party! Your contributions made the celebration extra special!

Greetings from the Executive Director

Margie’s Café Remodel to Begin October 29 Here we grow again! Thanks to the Veterans, Seniors, and Hu-

man Services Levy and donations from caring Center sup-porters, this hub of dining activity is getting a much-needed facelift. We’re remodeling and upgrading the Café so that it can accommodate more diners in an even more engaging atmosphere. However, this means that the Café will be closed for approximately four weeks from October 29 through

November 23 in order to complete the upgrades. As with any change, we’ll have challenges, but don’t worry-soup, hot coffee,

and basic sandwiches will still be available in the Junction Diner in Hatten Hall. Just step on over and place your order as usual.

Lifelong Learning Thrives at The Center Learning new things exercises your brain and keeps you young no matter what the years on the calendar may say. We are able to offer literally hundreds of classes every year - from computer literacy to Spanish to ukelele to watercolor painting. A big shout out to Cherie Schumacher, our extraordinary Program Coordinator who makes all of these classes and activities possible. We are so lucky to have her! Have you signed up for the Entomology class? Extremely exciting and popular! Be sure to check out all we have to offer throughout these pages.

Westside Friends Program Continues to Grow We are pleased to welcome Michele Fawcett-Long to our Social Work Department. Michele is a West Seattle resi-dent who worked as a hospice volunteer coordinator for over 11 years. She has extensive experience in training and supporting volunteers and staff, as well as skills in program development. We are delighted to have her join our so-cial work team here. She will be working eight hours a week to assist in enhancing our Westside Friends program, where we match a volunteer with a person in the community who has requested increased support at home.

We are confident that with the additional focus and support Michele provides, we will be able to increase the numbers of people in the community we can serve. The funds for this position are also coming from the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy, which we received this year.

The Holidays are Here and We are Ready for Cheer! Please come kick off your holiday season by joining us for one of two holiday lun-cheon celebrations on December 4 or December 11. We have a fantastic holiday feast prepared for you with all the trimmings, live entertainment, as well as a visit from Santa and his elves. These fill up quickly so be sure to sign up at the front desk. See page 8 for details.

Legacy GivingWhat is a Legacy Gift?A legacy gift is a bequest, i.e., a gift included in your last will and testament. A bequest can be for a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, and/or a specific piece of property. This includes donations of stocks, property, life insurance or retirement plans, charitable remainder trusts, and/or charita-ble lead trusts.

Leaving a legacy gift to the Senior Center is one way you can help bring love, care, and meaning to thousands of seniors’ lives. The Senior Center of West Seattle is a non-profit organi-zation that relies upon donations from individuals to thrive. Leaving a legacy gift is a great way to show your appreciation for the Center.

If you include the Senior Center of West Seattle in your will, please let us know and join the Legacy Giving Circle. Please contact our Executive Director Lyle Evans at 206-932-4044 ext. 5.

Volunteer extraordinaire - Darnell NelsonIf you noticed a flash of bling down in the Stop ‘N Shop, it was probably Darnell’s cuff links! He’s usually sporting a snazzy shirt with even snazzier cuff links!

Darnell Nelson has been working down in the shop for about a year and a half. He was born in Oklahoma and is the oldest of eight children. His family moved to Seattle in the mid 60’s.

For Darnell, academics came easy and he graduated with honors. He studied law and spent his career working in the Treasury department of the federal government.

When Darnell is not working at the shop, you might find him tending to his roses. He also enjoys geology. He says, “The rocks, they keep me grounded.”

On the flip side, there’s nothing grounding about the fact that he misses the tornados in Oklahoma. Grow-ing up, he liked to watch a good storm come in over the plains.

When talking about volunteering at the Stop ‘N Shop, Darnell says he has seen some interesting characters come in. One of his most memorable moments was

witnessing his first shoplifter. She milled around the store for over an hour, when she finally just walked out with a bunch of clothes. Acting on instinct, Darnell chased her down the street and said, “Don’t you know the law?”

We are lucky to have him on our shop crew, and he feels lucky to be here. What he likes best about working here is the people. “You’re all so interesting” he says.

Be sure to say hello to Darnell when you are shopping at our lovely thrift store soon – make sure you have a few minutes…Darnell LOVES to talk!

Come and visit our Center! Have a bowl of homemade soup…sit down and enjoy the company…and if you enjoy the atmosphere, join our volunteer team! We are always looking for new volunteers to keep our Senior Center running on all cylinders!

Toni’s TipsDo you yearn for the pitter-patter of little paws crossing your living room floor? Before

you say, “Wait a minute, I’m too old or too disabled to have responsibility for a dog or cat,” you should know that living with a pet can be physically and mentally bene-

ficial for people of all ages and for those with disabilities. A study done in 2015 on the benefits of pet ownership for older adults showed that just 15 minutes of bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain that imme-diately leads to lower blood pressure and heart rate and reduced stress and anxiety. According to this study, over the long term pet-human interactions can reduce

depression and may help prevent heart disease and stroke. Pets provide compan-ionship that can reduce loneliness and add mean-

ing to one’s life. The rewards of pet ownership can be life-transforming!

Now that I’ve convinced you of the benefits of pet ownership, let’s discuss some specific issues. Daily dog walking can provide healthy exercise, but if you’re mostly immobile or dealing with chronic pain, a senior dog who’s likely to be calm and quiet would be a better choice than a highly energetic breed like a Jack Russell terrier unless a friend or family member can assist with walking and other tasks. A cat or bird would also be an excellent choice. If you’re active and away from home a lot a kitten would probably not be a good choice, but if you usually stick close to home, an older, calmer cat who would keep you company would be great.

For those who are low-income or concerned about the possibility of pet adop-tion draining the bank account, the Seattle Animal Shelter offers many benefits to those over 60 years of age or disabled who have a Gold Card and want to give a good home to a dog or cat. They give a 50% discount on the pet license, a 50% discount off the adoption price of a dog or cat two years or older, and free adoption for a dog or cat six years or older. They also provide supplemental pet food, toys, leashes, and collars on a first-come first served basis, as well as financial assistance to help with the cost of spay or neuter surgery.

As you can see now, the rewards of pet ownership can be life-transforming! If you’d like to look further into pet adoption, please feel free to contact me at 206.932.4044 x9.

Seattle’s Gold Card for Healthy Aging is a handy resource for Seattle and King County residents age 60 and older. The card

features the toll-free Community Living Connections number — 1(844)348-5464 or (206) 962-8467 — and discounts on goods

and services listed in a Special Discounts Directory.

Discounts include free entrance to the Seattle Aquarium, reduced admission to Woodland Park Zoo, 50% discount on dog and cat

licenses at the Seattle Animal Shelter and so much more!

Pick yours up at the front desk.
