Tunesmith Night, Saturday, February 10, 2018 – 7PM Sugar Time Bakery, 107 North River Street, Ste. A, Enterprise, Oregon The Wallowa Valley Music Alliance presents another edition of Tunesmith Night, a monthly showcase of original music. The Saturday, February 10 show features songwriters Mike Mallory, May Arden and Eric Sinclair. The program moves to a new location this month—Sugar Time Bakery in Enterprise. They have just reopened in the newly renovated Burnaugh Building on North River Street and will provide the perfect atmosphere for our listening audience.

For Mike Mallory, the song is the thing. Mallory has been playing music professionally since age 15 (since 1968). Early on, he discovered the songs of Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Mississippi John Hurt and realized the songs were what spoke to him. He is comfortable strapping on his Telecaster and turning up to 11 or finger picking his acoustic trying to imitate Mississippi John. "That is the beauty of the players my age, we did not realize there was a division between acoustic and electric music," says Mallory, who is a member of the La Grande alt-country/Americana band The Wasteland Kings, along with son Kris Mallory who is lead vocalist and main songwriter for the group. This is Mallory’s fourth appearance at Tunesmith Night.

May Arden was born and raised in Hood River, Oregon, and comes from a family where traditional music of the working people has been handed down for generations. She learned songs growing up that were so old that their authors are unknown. May is also a highly accomplished opera singer who, last summer, sang a lead in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute in New York City. Her passion is to bring operatic music, which is rooted in the minds and hearts of working people, back to the people who gave birth to it. In her original, beat driven music, she combines a humming technique from her operatic training that creates a gateway between a form that takes decades of training and the everyday people that originated it.

Wallowa County folks may know Eric Sinclair as one of the “tree guys” but he is also a talented songwriter and musician. He was part of the band, Saigon County, performing around the region for a few years. Sinclair has an accessible style, quick wit and knows his way around a guitar.

Tunesmith Night is presented in a round-robin format, with each musician playing a song, then the next taking a turn, creating an interesting and varied performance. Admission is $10 at the door or by season pass. Doors open at 6pm, music at 7pm, all ages welcome. Sugar Time will have the kitchen open for soups and sandwiches, in addition to their usual yummy sweet treats (BYO adult beverages).

Applications will be accepted between March 1 and April 30, 2018

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development is seeking applications to support busi-nesses and help create jobs in rural Oregon. Approximately $300,000 may be made available in Oregon under the RBDG Program in 2018, pending the availability of federal funds. The grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. Public bodies, government entities, Indian tribes, and nonprofits are eligible to apply. A Native American set aside that is funded through a national competition is also available.
