GOSPEL: Mark 4:26-34

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

The Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Catholic Parish acknowledges the Jagera and Turrbul people, the Traditional Custodians who have walked upon and cared for this land for thousands of years.

We acknowledge the continued deep spiritual attachment and relationship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to this Country and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of Reconciliation.

THANK YOU You have all been fantastic during our COVID restrictions and we thank

you most sincerely. However, we fear we are becoming a bit complacent when

arriving for Mass. Can we please, please ask you to arrive at least 15

minutes before the start of Mass. Our Ushers will really appreciate it.

Ordinary Time can sound like a such a disappointment or inconsequential, “Oh it’s just ordinary”.

But it really is anything but ordinary in that sense. The title comes from the numbering of the weeks, the Ordinal (1st, 2nd, 3rd) Sundays. While the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter celebrate the mystery of Christ, these numbered (ordinary) weeks celebrate life with Jesus. It is a time for growth, to see God in the day to day of our lives.

This year we read through the Gospel of Mark. Each week the First Reading is chosen to relate to the Gospel passage. The Second Reading is independent and we read (in order) passages from 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, James and finally Hebrews.

The Gospel this weekend contains two parables – “the Kingdom of God is like.” Parables were often used as a way of teaching and their value lay in not explaining them, but rather letting the listener be puzzled by them and search for their meaning. Jesus finishes his parables with the words, ‘Those who have ears to hear, let them hear. You might imagine some in the crowd going away scratching their heads, and talking to each other – ‘What do you think he is talking about? Some political cartoons use a similar technique, not just for amusement, but also offering a social or political commentary.

When considering the parables, it is always worth thinking about why Jesus found this a helpful image for his own ministry, both for himself and for his disciples as well as the crowd. Then consider what the parable might mean for the early Christian community of Mark’s gospel. What might be a comparable image for Churches today?

The First Reading sees “every kind of bird, every winged creature” resting in the branches of the planted tree. God’s kingdom wasn’t just for Israel, but would draw from all, like Jesus’ “birds of the air” sheltering in the mustard shrub. The Lord’s “stunting the tall trees and making low ones grow” is also reflected in the Gospel where the plants grow, not by the farmer’s wish, but “of its own accord” or by the way God planned it.

The Second Reading is the conclusion of a section of Paul’s letter reflecting on the hardships of ministry, life and death. The Corinthians, coming from their Greek philosophical background, think that bodily existence is some sort of obstacle to being united to Christ. For Paul this sort of ‘being at home’ imagery is not helpful. What matters is pleasing the Lord. We glimpse in Paul a real pastor struggling with the difficulties he faces in his ministry. There is misunderstanding within the community, and attacks coming from outside. Through it all Paul tries to find and hold onto the truth of the Gospel.

Holy Thursday at Home

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

ENTRANCE PROCESSION: GATHER US IN

1. Here in this place, new light is streaming, now is the darkness, vanished away. See in this space our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in the lost and forsaken, gather us in the blind and the lame; call to us now and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name.

2. We are the young, our lives are a myst’ry, we are the old who yearn for your face, we have been sung throughout all of hist’ry, called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in the rich and the haughty, gather us in the proud and the strong; give us a heart so meek and so lowly, give us the courage to enter the song.

APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
