Community News and ProgramsSCENIC REVIEW APRIL 2010

President’s MessageThe time has come for me to step aside and for the association to welcome a new face into the Presidents role. My second term as President

of SACA ends in conjunction with our AGM (March 22, 2010), at which time a new President will be elected. I have really enjoyed my time as President of the Association, and all the people and experiences that come along with the role. Most of all I have enjoyed working with a great group of volunteers and employees that are committed to SACA and what the Association means to our community.

I have lived in Scenic Acres for over 14 years now, and have been associated in one form or another with SACA for more than 10 years. It has been wonderful to witness how the community has matured and the Association has matured along with it. The SACA board, and a long list of volunteers, have made a big difference in who we are, how we interact with the city and the communities around us, and the quality of our life that we all enjoy within the community. My commitment to the group will continue for the next year in the role of Past President, and as your representative on the Calgary North-West Recreation Centre Society (CNRCS) as Vice-Chair. Thank you for supporting me and the Association over the past years, and I wish my successor all the best in what I’m sure will be an interesting journey. SincerelyRay Hillman, Past-President, SACA

Community News and Programs2010 Volunteers of the Year

With National Volunteer Week being celebrated, Scenic Acres Community Association would like to take this opportunity to thank two volunteers who have really stepped forward these past few years. When a request for volunteers goes out, these two are the fi rst to answer. In fact, they even volunteered to volunteer at the volunteer appreciation night! We would like to recognize…

Jeri and Terry OrrJeri and Terry have lived in Scenic Acres since they moved to Calgary from Manitoba 10 years ago. While in Manitoba Jeri kept herself busy working as a teacher, starting up a local chapter of the 4H club, coaching T-ball, spending time as a brownie leader, and taking care of their 3 children. Jeri also found the time while the children were young to be an active member of the Kinette club. Terry spent many years in the Kinsmen club and took his turn as Treasurer and President, and was voted Kinsman of the Year for putting so much time into Kinsmen activities. He volunteered on the Western Development Board, and a local environmental group. Terry also volunteered for several years on the Young Offenders Restitution committee in Selkirk.

Terry and Jeri followed their children to Calgary after Jeri retired from teaching and Terry semi-retired from a communications position. As a way to meet people and keep active they started all over again fi nding new and interesting volunteer opportunities. Jeri got hard at work editing the Scenic Review, and sat on the Board of Directors for 5 years.

She put her teaching skills to work showing others how to quilt and craft. Jeri even won an Alberta Centennial Award for volunteering! Terry signed them up to help at the Stampede breakfast fl ipping pancakes their fi rst year in Scenic Acres and they haven’t missed a breakfast since.

Terry and Jeri do it all, from judging the LEGO competition, to working evenings at the casino fundraiser; if there is a need, you can count on the Orr’s to help.

I’m sure they have contributed to many things that go unnoticed, however SACA would like the entire Scenic Acres community to know how much work these two have contributed to our neighborhood.

So, TERRY and JERI ORR, a HUGE… THANK YOU!

If you see them out in their garden or pass them on the street, be sure to take a minute and thank them for all they do.

Thank you Volunteers!

Pancakes: 6000 Hot air balloon rides: 200 Live band: 4 hours Volunteers: Priceless!

April is a month that brings many things to mind; spring, warmer weather, fl owers, Earth Day, and so much more. One thing the month of April signifi es that isn’t mentioned too often is National Volunteer Week, April 18 to 24th. In recognition of this week, the Scenic Acres Community Association would like to thank all of the volunteers who contributed their time this past year to our various community events and programs. Without the support of our volunteers, our community would not be as spirited and vibrant.

Whether it’s shoveling your neighbours walk, distributing energy effi cient light bulbs, fl ipping pancakes at the Stampede Breakfast, helping to build a community park, or coaching an entire season of soccer or hockey, all acts of volunteerism, big or small, are valued and appreciated by our entire community.

THANK YOU for giving the gift of your time!

Spring is in the air and that means time to begin planning for next year! Grade nine students have met with counsellors from Bowness and William Aberhart to select courses for next year. We have also met our new students from Citadel Park, Scenic Acres, and W.O. Mitchell. New students will attend an orientation on April 20th where they will get to see this year’s drama production and have a tour of the school. We will host an open house on May 13th at 7:00pm for all new students and parents. If you do not attend one of the feeder schools but are hoping to attend Arbour Lake School next year, please come by or call the school to discuss registration.

Students are rehearsing for this year’s drama production “Dude, Where’s My Book”. This production was written by Arbour Lake staff, has music performed by the Senior Band, and involves three hundred students! The play features scenes based around the Wizard of Oz, Diary of Anne Frank, Dr. Seuss, Lord of the Rings, Love You Forever and the Three Little Pigs. Tickets go on sale this month for evening performances on April 21, 22 and 23rd.

Scenic Acres

We have had big changes at Scenic Acres School. Our principal, Dallas Wheeler, has been transferred to Sam Livingston School. In March we welcomed Debbie Ireland to Scenic Acres as our new principal. She brings with her a wealth of experience and is excited about our community and the work we already have underway. Welcome aboard Debbie!

Kindergarten Pre-Registration for the 2010-2011 school year at Scenic Acres School is continuing. If your child will be 4 years old on or before March 1st, 2010 he/she may start Kindergarten in September 2010. Your child’s birth certifi cate and a document showing your home address are needed at the time of registration. Our Kindergarten orientation meeting for registered students will take place on Thursday, May 6th at 6:30 PM in the gym.

March was a busy month for all as we entered into Student led conferences on the 18th and 19th. Students, parents and staff all enjoyed the opportunity the conferences presented for the students to share their learning and understanding with their families over the two days. It was encouraging to see the students “shine” as they celebrated their learning.

March at Monsignor Doyle School has been a month where the students and staff made fi nal preparations for their Lenten journey as the Holy Thursday Celebration takes place on Thursday, April 1st. The morning will start in the classrooms where the students will be involved in a re-enactment of the Last Supper. Following the re-enactment of the Last Supper all students will be invited to the gym to witness the Stations of the Cross as a liturgy beginning at approximately 9:30 am. All parents of Monsignor Doyle students are welcome to join us for this very solemn and meaningful morning.

April begins with the Easter break from April 1st until school reopens on April 12th. Also in April we look forward to the weeklong residency with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks where all students will be involved in learning new dance steps led by the professional facilitators from Decidedly Jazz Danceworks.

Have a blessed month!Monsignor E. L. Doyle Staff

With the coming of spring we are beginning to plan for our upcoming year. W.O. Mitchell School will be accepting Out of Boundary students for the 2010-2011 school year. If you are interested in attending our school please contact us at 403 777-6100. At this time Grade Six students with help from their parents are also making decisions about where they will be attending for Grade Seven. If students are planning to attend a school other than their designated school please contact that school immediately.

Here is an update on the fundraising that was initiated and carried out by our students in their Hearts for Haiti campaign. Students raised funds totaling $1479.55 and with a donation that our School Council added to this, our cheque to Doctors Without Borders amounted to $2479.55. With the government matching our money almost $5000.00 will be contributed for relief efforts in Haiti on our student’s initiative. In addition to the money raised, the benefi ts for the school and for the students were endless. We came together in community which was initiated by the entrepreneurial spirit and the ethical commitment of our school’s students – tomorrow’s leaders. Thank you to all parents, community members, students and staff for your support of this very worthy cause.

SportsMini Basketball

Mini Basketball Boys Team 1 win Gold and Head to Provincials in Edmonton

It’s not the destination; it’s the journey. I’m sure you’ve heard a saying something similar to this before: Cliched but true. This basketball season, for example, our Silver Springs/Scenic Acres Mini Boys 1 “Rebels” team won the gold medal in their playoff tournament. More importantly, this group of ten10-year-old boys took those of us watching their practices and games on quite a journey.

The team started off with a bit of an identity crisis. They went from being called the “Rebelators” to the “Rebels”. Some of the boys were new to basketball while others have been playing community basketball for years. They were almost “seeded out” of the B1 division in the fi rst half of the season only to go on to win all of their games in the second half of the season. Ultimately they captured the

gold medal in their fi nal playoff game with a score of 33 - 27.

The real secret to this team’s coaching success was collaboration. Coach Greg and Assistant coaches Caroline, Sam, and J.P. modeled dedication to player development by having the players practice fundamentals like dribbling, shooting, and defense. Parents helped regularly with drill practices. Grandparents and siblings cheered them on from the sidelines at every game. The boys earned success by staying steadfast to simple but effective plays and gaining insight from previous games’ mistakes.

The city championship win in their division has given the Rebels team another opportunity to play for a provincial championship in Edmonton at the end of March. To fi nd out how the team made out at Provincials please visit www.scenicacresca.ca! Go Rebels Go!

Your feedback is essential to help us ensure proper programming. Make sure to check next month’s issue as well as our web sitewww.scenicacresca.ca for the latest.

The courts will also be available at least 50 percent of the time for community use. Gather some friends and either bring your own ball or borrow one from the SACA offi ce during offi ce hours.

Interim Snow and Ice Control PolicyOn February 18, 2010 City Council decided to establish a sub-committee of Audit Committee to consider the terms of reference for The City of Cal-gary’s Snow and Ice Control Program.

The current Snow and Ice Control Policy identifi es the intent of The City of Calgary winter maintenance operations and establishes the priori-ties, standards and service levels of the snow and ice control program. An effective and effi cient snow and ice control program is necessary to allow the municipality to function under normal winter weather conditions to reduce snow and ice hazards and to provide reasonable winter mobility on city infrastructure including roadways some sidewalks and pathways. The City of Calgary manages snow and ice control operations on city infrastruc-ture within The City of Calgary right of ways in accordance with Council approved policy and priority system and relevant City Bylaws.

The aim of the Interim Snow and Ice Control Policy is to provide reasonable winter driving conditions for vehicles that are:

properly equipped for winter driving; • andare operated in a manner consistent • with good winter driving habits.

The following list is the current priotities of the program: Priority One (Sanding and Salting)

I was fortunate enough this past month to dine at the fabulously chic Vin Room located on 2310-4th St. S.W. at the old Mission Cycle build-ing. John Gilchrist (a published restaurant critic in Calgary) rated this wine bar as the “best new res-taurant of 2009”. I could not agree more! From the friendly hostess, the contemporary design, the walls lined with wine bottles, and the downtown posh feel, there wasn’t a missed step along the way. The main fl oor has a sexy lounge feel, while the upstairs is more secluded. With the roof-top patio covered in snow, I found myself longing for the month of July and picturing my friends gathered around a table enjoying an endless selection of wine. The wine cellar is also available for private parties. The Lobster Salad with smoked pancetta was to die for. The squid was light and refreshing, and the cod cakes were cooked to perfection. The Duck was juicy and savory. Adding to the dining experience was our knowledgeable server who kept us smiling throughout the evening.

If you are looking for a place to wine and dine your clients or business as-sociates, this is the place! Vin Room is also great for couples who want a sensual dinning experience.

A Fascinating Novel in the Le Carré Tradition

Book of the Month

If you haven’t read a recent book by the master of suspense and intrigue, John Le Carré, you cer-tainly won’t be disappointed in A Most Wanted Man (Penguin Group). This is the 21st book by the internationally best-selling novelist and former spy, and the author hasn’t lost any of his edge.

This novel is set in post 9-11 Hamburg, Germany and the focus is on an illegal Muslim “refugee” burdened with a less than honorable inheritance from his Russian father. Issa, the 23-year-old’s young female lawyer, a prominent private banker, and a Muslim spiritual leader all become the focus of an intense, multi-country intelligence operation. The insights in this book will have you shaking your head in disbelief.

What’s Up with the Bunny and Eggs? The original Easter bunny was associated with the Pagan equinox festival. The Saxons celebrated their goddess of spring and fertility in April. She was named Eastre. Eastre's sacred animal was the hare, or rabbit—one of the most common symbols of fertility and rebirth.

The colored eggs have an ancient origin, and are also associated with fertility and springtime festivals. Ancient Romans and Greeks used eggs in celebrating resurrected gods. The egg is also prominent in the Jewish rituals of Passover. The roasted egg on the seder table is a symbol of springtime and rebirth.

It’s Motorcycle Season! With spring in the air and with summer fast approaching, many Calgarians are hauling their motorcycles out of the garage for another fun season of riding. That’s why the Traffi c Section of the Calgary Police Service wants to make sure that bikers of all ages and skill levels are riding safely.

“Starting in May, with the weather and road conditions improving, many motorcyclists are getting their bikes out after having them put away for fi ve or six months,” says Const. Mike O’Connor, co-ordinator of the Selective Traffi c Enforcement Program (STEP). “We want to make sure their skills are sharpened a little, reminding them that it’s not like driving a car which you can do all-year-round. You get on your bike after a period away from it, and some skills might have become rusty.”

The STEP program focuses on issues and/or locations that have been identifi ed as problematic by the Traffi c Section, and works to raise awareness of traffi c safety-related issues. In May, STEP focused on motorcycle safety, but O’Connor says raising awareness

of motorbike safety is an ongoing effort for the CPS.

“At the beginning of the season, we tend to have a few more motorcycle collisions,” he says. “I think we can attribute that to a couple of things. Again, the cyclists are rusty, and they may be a little over-exuberant or enthusiastic and they get out there and maybe go a little too fast and practice some unsafe driving habits.”

But it’s not only the bikers who have to be diligent now that the summer driving season is upon us.“We have hundreds of thousands of motorists out there who haven’t seen the bikes for six months and they forget about them,” says O’Connor. “You have to pay attention, shoulder check, and you need to look around before changing lanes or making turns. Many of our collisions happen because people turn in front of a motorcyclist, or change lanes without shoulder checking.

“And motorcyclists have to remember that they have to be seen, and that can be diffi cult when they’re zipping in and

In Our Cityout of traffi c. They’re a small target and drivers can sometimes misjudge distance and speed because of the size of the bike – they’re smaller and can accelerate like crazy.” O’Connor says often all a motorcyclist needs to brush up his or her skills is to spend a few minutes riding around a parking lot.

“We encourage them to go out and practice,” he says. “Even if it’s just for a half hour or an hour, just to practice some of the manoeuvres they haven’t been doing for awhile.”O’Connor says many driving schools and the Calgary Safety Council can also help motorcyclists brush up their skills.

The STEP program has raised awareness regarding potential trouble areas and trouble spots ever since its inception, and it works. On the Deerfoot Trail, for example, there has been a noticeable improvement in driver habits for months after a campaign, O’Connor says.

STEP considers educating the public about traffi c safety issues is more important than giving tickets or levying fi nes.

Real EstateIs Now the Time to Purchase a Home?

“Should we jump in now or wait to see if the market is still dropping”.

Well, you may have already missed the bottom. People are feeling more confi dent about the economy which means fi xed mortgage rates will increase. The Bank of Canada will also be increasing the prime lending rate soon.

The banks and governments are also encouraging new home buyers to take action. The banks have decided to create quite a few programs to motivate the home purchaser, such as No Down Payment. The banks call it a cash back to mortgage. And Quick Close Specials. These super low rates

are offered to homes that you take possession of within 30 days.

Besides a drop in the prime lending rate to a historic 2.25% the government offered some major incentives to the fi rst time home buyer. The “fi rst – time home buyers” RRSP plan enables you to withdraw up to $25,000 from an RRSP without penalty provide you pay this back to your RRSP within 15 years. There is also a new fi rst-time home buyers’ $750.00 credit towards closing costs. (www.fi n.gc.ca)

Interest rates are on the move once again and house prices are also increasing. So for those waiting for

the bottom...it seems to have come and is sailing away. Now, I’m not saying the deals are gone, just that is there is no bottom to wait for anymore. Get in now as your property will only increase in value and the interest rate you see now will be gone soon.

37SCENIC REVIEW APRIL 2010

Canadians have some impressive fi nancial goals for 2010. Consider the following, taken from a poll conducted on behalf of Edward Jones in Canada:• 48% plan to pay down debt; of this

group, 13% want to pay down their mortgage faster.

• 20% plan to increase their

contributions to an investment account, with 10% saying they will contribute more to their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP).

Paying down your mortgage and saving for retirement are two worthy goals. But can you work toward them at the same time? Ask yourself: Is it a wise move to make extra mortgage payments or should I put that money into my RRSP instead? Let’s consider the pros and cons of making larger-than-necessary mortgage payments. First, the “pro” side:• You’ll pay less in interest over the

long term. Over the course of a few decades, the interest you pay on your mortgage could equal, or exceed, the mortgage amount itself. The sooner you pay off your mortgage, the less you’ll pay in interest.

• You’ll realize more equity when you

sell your home. The less you owe on your house, the greater the equity in your pocket when you sell it.

Financial FocusSpeed Up Mortgage Payments or Contribute to an RRSP?

• You could get a psychological benefi t. If you can pay off your mortgage, you may feel as though a burden has been lifted.

Now, let’s examine the “cons” of paying down your mortgage early:• You might sacrifi ce investment

returns. If you paid off a fi xed-rate mortgage of 5%, you are essentially “earning” a 5% return. But if you could fi nd an investment — such as the securities held inside your RRSP — that earned more than 5%, you might be better off putting your money there. Of course, there’s no guarantee on the earnings you’ll get from your RRSP, but your returns will, in effect, be boosted by the RRSP’s tax-deferred environment. Furthermore, you get an immediate tax break on your annual contributions.

• You’ll tie up cash in an illiquid

investment. If your employment should be threatened or you face some large, unexpected expenses, you may need quick access to a large amount of cash — and it’s harder to get money out of your home than it is from your savings and investments.

• You’ll risk being under-diversifi ed.

If you put all your money in your

house, and the housing market slumps, your net worth might suffer more than if you had spread your money among a variety of assets, such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds. While diversifi cation, by itself, cannot guarantee a profi t or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility.

Clearly, paying down your mortgage early offers some signifi cant benefi ts — but it could also incur some signifi cant costs, particularly in the area of saving for retirement. And since you could be retired for two or three decades, you may want to take full advantage of your RRSP, your Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) and other retirement savings vehicles. Ultimately, the mortgage-versus-retirement question is a highly personal one and does not lend itself to easy solutions. But it’s not necessarily an either-or situation. You could, for example, increase your RRSP contribution and use your tax refund to make an extra mortgage payment each year. It’s your choice — so make it a good one.
