BALL BRIEFS

BIG TALLIES AT ALPHINGTON

150 games up to Doug Adams,Alphington's winger this week . Dougis the player who is invariably callingfor the ball out on the wing withoutan opponent within cooee . Kicks agoal occasionally, misses one oc-casionally, got married recently (be-fore the start of the season) andcould catch up his father's number ofmatches in a few years.

100 games to John Skerry who op-perates on the opposite point of thesquare to Doug. John is always thegentleman on the ground, plays theball (possibly because he lacks theweight to be brutal) and is fast andelusive .

100 games to Peter ( Rocky) Harti-gan. He decided that gardening is notmuch of a sport and returned to tryout his legs again . He plays in theruck and back pocket, and makes lessnoise on the ground than any othertwo players .

100 games to Ian (Jack) Harris, youngest of the four brothers to sad-dle up. This is an achievement of un-paralleled persistency and we con-gratulate him and deny the uglyrumours that have been spread aboutthat his brother Peter gives him allhis kicks . Jack took almost as manymarks last Saturday as in the previous99 matches .

TWO CENTURIES ATMELBOURNE HIGH

A milestone is reached today by,twopopular MHS players Warwick (Rick)Ponton and Neil (The Beard) Malone .Great friends off the field, bothstarted their careers in 1967 with theJuniors and with the Seniors in 1969 .Neil (five days the older) has been a

most versatile member having play-ed in many positions ranging fromfull forward to centre half back andfrom "the flanks" to ruck-rover . Lastyear he was runner-up in the club'sbest and fairest award. Rick, lastyear's vice captain, took over as cap-tain this year from Ian Turnbull (whohas retired) and is a very enthusiasticand capable leader. Winner of theclub's most consistent player award inhis first senior year, Rick has playedmost of his games on the wing al-though the half forward and halfback flanks are not new to him .

To both Rick and Neil, the mem-bers and supporters of MelbourneHigh congratulate you on your 100games today and we certainly hopeyou can go on and notch up the 200with the club .

CENTURY DOWN COLLEGIANSWAY

Collegians congratulates Paul Munn(the poorly one) on playing his 100thgame against MHS . Paul had his firstgame with Collegians in 1966 andhas never turned in a bad one and hasalways been amongst the club's topgoal sneaks . Paul and his charmingwife both take a very active part inCollegians' social activities . Mr. W .Mitchell presented him with amomento after the game . Good luckand good football for the future .

100 UP TO IVANHOESPEEDSTE R

One of Amateur Football's fastestruck-rovers, Ivanhoe's Ron Baker, plays his 100th game against Coburgtoday. Ron started with the Hoe's

under 15 side, which he captainedand moved quickly through the ranksto the senior side . His "ton" is a greateffort, as Ron has just turned twenty-one, and is enjoying his best seasonever . Well-known for his driving left-foot drop punts, Ron is a dedicatedstudent of the game and should seemany more years of successful foot-ball in the black and white verticals .

Congratulations to Old Trinity'svice captain Charlie Fellows, whoplayed his 50th game for the clubagainst Reservoir . Charlie first playedfor the club as a schoolboy in 1962,before joining Box Hill in the VFA .Since his return in 1971 he has beena consistent, constructive and dashingplayer on the back line and in thecentre . This year he's also taken over

from George as the goal-sneak. Welldone Chas, we look forward to manymore fine goals .

Congratulations to Alan Jones onreaching his 50th game with Bruns-wick. Alan has been a great team mateduring his games, always there tohelp someone .

Congratulations to Tom Johnstonon playing his 50th game with Park-side. Our correspondent is a fewgames late with this announcementbut he realised that he was not goingto get any peace until this made "TheAmateur Footballer" . Our apologiesTom - keep up the good work andgo on to the hundred .

CLUB HISTORIES - No . 3ORMOND - NOW IN THE "ROARING 40's"

The Ormond Amateur Football Club was formed at a public meeting inJuly 1931, with Mr. Les Smith as President .

Vice Presidents were Messrs E. E. Gunn, L . A. Chisholm, and Cr. F .Bevers. Secretary was Mr. W. Coffey and Treasurer, Mr. J . F. Hogan. MessrsR. A. Stevens, S . Dart, C. Ellinson, W. Fancett, M. Scates and F . McNamaramade up the rest of the committee .

The first committee decision wasto make application to join theV.A.F.A. (then the MetropolitanFootball Association), although somemembers preferred the FederalLeague . Along with 9 other clubs,Ormond became a Foundation Mem-ber of the new 'D' Section in 1932 .

Another early decision was to usethe President's World War I Corpscolours . So the mighty BROWN ANDBLUE was born .

Looking back over 42 years bringsback memories of the depression tomany members, and the Second WorldWar to many more .

Memories of the players riding to`away' games in "Porky" Godfred-son's fruiterer's truck because nobodvowned a car .

Memories of what is now the Ladies'Kiosk, but used to be the changingrooms for both sides.

Memories of the really good play-ers who went on to make the `BigTime' - players like Havel Rowe,Lawrie Mithen, Dick Fenton-Smith,Graeme Watson, Neil Crompton, ColinWilson, Jeff Kitely, and many, manyothers .

Success came early to Ormond -`D' Section Premiers in 1933, `C' Sec-tion Premiers 1934, and `B' SectionRunners-up in 1936. Five years afterour first game and Ormond were in`A' Section .

1950 was the year the droughtwas broken and the `A' Premiershipwon. A decade passed and Ormondspent four disastrous years back in `B'Section . Now that memory is almosterased by two more `A' Section Flags.

Ormond Reserves have always beena force to be reckoned with and havewon seven Premierships in 12 years .The Juniors have also won sevenPremierships since 1950 .

The Under 17, Under 15, and Under13 sides have not yet brought aPremiership Flag to Ormond, but havesupplied many fine players to the`Seniors' .

While the number of players hasgrown from that first year of about22 to a total now of about 150, thecommittee has also expanded from12 to 33 hard-working men .

The club is also fortunate that theLadies have always "pitched in" andhelped . In the last five years alonethe Ladies' Committee has raised$6000 and kept the club on its feetfinancially .

Twenty Premierships and 16 timesRunners-up, good coaches and greatplayers, committeemen of the calibreof the Founder, the Late LES SMITH,and the tireless Doctor, the Late DR .J. R. PORTER, all part of a Traditioncalled Ormond Amateurs, a. Traditionknown throughout the Victorianfootball fraternity, and second tonone.
