The Humanitarian Situationin the Northern Syrian Camps

Flash report Winter 2019 - 201828 December 2018

The number of damaged tents by the rainstorm has increased to more than 80 tents, where the water has overflowed from the valley area, and the connecting road between the northern and southern parts of Atma cluster has been cut off. (The road connecting the northern and southern parts and passing through the valley. The road length is 100 meters and has been equipped by putting tubes under it and covering it by asphalt). This road was collapsed due to the heavy torrents caused by rain. Turkey has opened a part of the separation wall to change the track of the torrents’ waters towards Turkish territory and prevent its collection in the valley. However, the amount of water is large, and the rain is still falling heavily.

The number of damaged tents has increased to more than 50 tents. The torrents’ waters have entered the tents and submerged all shelter supplies of the IDP families.

The floods and torrents resulted in flooding 40 shelters and damaging its furniture largely, where a large part of it was drifted along.

More than 15 tents were submerged because of flooding, destroying shelter supplies of the IDPs.

Over 30 houses were submerged by flooding and rains. All shelter supplies were damaged in these houses.

The camp is located in a soil area, and the camp's ground was not covered with gravel. Furthermore, the camp was new and never subjected to such storms. The water has flowed into most of the tents, as well as the rainwater has leaked from the tent roofs, as it has not been isolated (not equipped with suitable rain insulators).

The mud was formed, resulting in restricting mobility and submerging of three tents by water. Knowing that the camp is located between the olive trees and its sub-roads are not paved.

The water leaked to 6 tents without significant damage. The mud was formed, resulting in restricting mobility. Knowing that the camp ground was not covered with gravel since it was recently constructed.

Seven tents were overflowed, which led to destroy the shelter supplies within these tents, and the mud was formed on the main roads of the camp, resulting in restricting mobility.

16 tents were overflowed due to the rains, and the mud was formed in most of the camp roads.

The mud was formed, resulting in restricting mobility, as the camps’ grounds were soft.

The camp residents received the families from the adjacent camp (Yad BiYad camp), subsequent to a security problem in Al Tkafol camp.

Eight tents were submerged by water after the rainwater flooded the tents and the sewage network flooded as well.

Part of the sewage network has been blocked due to heavy rainfall.

Seven tents were submerged by water, and all of its shelter supplies were destroyed.

Sewage drainage was overflowed due to heavy rains, so the camp management has worked to pull out the water and solve the problem.

Mud was formed in parts of the camps and its ground was not covered with gravel.

Water flowed into more than 50 tents, destroying all shelter supplies in these tents. Furthermore, the severe torrents partially destroyed two rooms. On the other hand, the IDPs were evacuated from this camp to the neighboring camps as a result of the serious security situation within the camp.

More than 30 tents were flooded by water, and all of its supplies were destroyed. Four tents were drifted by torrents, as the camp's ground was low, as well as, water flowed to it from more than one side.

The residents counted the damages of water leaked to the tents, where seven tents were destroyed, and the mud was formed in the eastern part of the camp.

Mud was formed in the southern part of the camp, as well as water has leaked from the roofs of more than 15 tents.

Eight tents were flooded by water, as the ground of the camp was completely flat, and the drainage channels were useless because of the heavy rainfall.

Twelve tents were submerged, and mud was formed on the road resulting in restricting mobility.

Nine tents were submerged by water, and all its shelter supplies were destroyed.

The sewage drain has been disrupted due to blocking of some pipes for a short period.

The road was cut off due to floods, so the civil defense works to open the way.

The camp road was cut off due to floods, so the civil defense teams work to open the way.

Fifteen tents were submerged by water in the northern part of the camp because of its proximity to the water channel, so all of its shelter supplies within it destroyed.

Ten tents were submerged by water, and all of its shelter supplies were destroyed.

Two families were slightly affected by water as a result of the tent rain insulators damage.

Four families were slightly affected due to the damage of the rain insulators that cover their rooms.

Water leaked to six rooms and losses were limited to damaged furniture.

Five families were slightly affected by the leakage of water to their rooms due to the damage of the tent rain insulators.

The road leading to the camp was cut off by torrents, and five tents were submerged by water as a result of its decline from the road level.

Eleven families were affected by the entry of water into their tents’ entrances as a result of its decline from the road level, where the damage of the rain insulators has led to the leakage of water into some tents, from another hand, the sanitation in this camp was disrupted for a short period.

Water was collected at the entrance of the camp as a result of the blockage of drainage channels.

Forty tents were submerged by water, and all of its shelter supplies were destroyed. The residents were taken out of the flooded tents to empty tents. From another side, Civil Defense teams are working to drain rainwater.

The river adjacent to the camp was flooded. As a result, the bridge connecting the camp to the main street was destroyed, where there was no exit from the camp except the bridge. Forty tents were submerged by water, and all of its shelter supplies were damaged. The camp is bordered by a mountain from the east, so the torrents flowed from it towards the camp causing great damage to the tents and forming potholes in the roads. IDPs cannot leave the camp to buy their needs. Till the date of issuing this report, there is no provided response, and the IDPs need bread and heating supplies.

It is located on flat ground. Most of the tents were submerged by mud and water, and a large part of the shelter supplies were destroyed within the tents.

The IDPs came out in a demonstration demanding the camp administration to find a quick solution before the situation gets more catastrophic , as well as to get the promises from the camp administration to dig a trench around the camps. From another hand, the water level has risen slightly, affecting the connecting road between Muhammadiyah and Deir al-Bailout camps.

This camp was greatly damaged as most of its tents were submerged by water due to rainwater flowed and non-absorbed into the sewers, where most of the water entered the tents, which necessitated the camp management to call for an emergency response from organizations and Syrian Civil Defense. Turkish Red Crescent came to the camps and provided two tents, as well as promised to provide more, where 22 tents at least within the camp needs to be replaced.

This camp was the most damaged in Kherbet Aljouz cluster, as it is located on a high mountain near the Turkish border. As a result, the water gathered within the camp to flow rapidly to the camp. More than 13 tents were completely submerged by water.

There are no damages in terms of shelter. As for the roads’ situation, the roads are somehow restricted, especially the main road leading to the camp, as it is very rough and steep, and there is great difficulty in accessing the water tanks to the camp.

There are no damages in terms of shelter. However, the roads inside the camp were very bad due to the nature of the agricultural ground, which has become muddy because of heavy rains and the IDPs movement within the camp was restricted.

Most of the tents were damaged, and mud was formed. Three tents were completely flooded. The main road leading to the camp was opened after being closed for the whole day.

IDPs in this camp were suffered from soil erosion due to the rainstorm and layers of mud were formed in the vicinity of the tents.

Forty tents and a cement room have been submerged by water. The IDPs were evacuated from these tents and taken to empty tents within the camp.

Three tents were submerged by water, and all of its shelter supplies were destroyed.

The situation is stable within these camps, but most of the roads in the camps have been cut off, as a result, the IDPs movement and reaching to their need was restricted.

The watercourse closed the entrance to the camp. The Civil Defense conducted maintenance for the course on one of the tributaries of the Al Kabear Al Shamli river. A mud layer was formed around most of the tents, which restricted the movement of IDPs and cars.

Ten tents were submerged by water, and all of its shelter supplies were destroyed.

Rainwater has leaked into most tents and cut off some main roads. One of the tents (which was placed on wooden poles) has fallen.

Most of the tents have been affected by the water leakage due to the camp's location on a mountain slope. The camp administration called for the need to find blankets and insulants for 80 tents that were damaged. A mud layer was formed, restricting the movement of the IDPs within and around the camp.

Five rain insulators were torn, due to heavy rainfall.

The water has leaked from the roofs of 15 worn tents within the camps.

The water has leaked to seven tents. As the camp's location at the bottom of the mountain led to the flow of water to it from the top of the mountain. From another hand, the roads of the camp were full of mud and the movement somehow restricted.

Mud pools were formed in some parts, restricting the movement of IDPs, as the camp's ground was not covered with gravel.

Ten tents were damaged due to the lack of rain insulators.

Five tents were submerged by water from the southwestern side of the camp.

The water has leaked to 14 tents.

Four tents were submerged by water from the northeastern side of the camp.
