Queensland Fire Service Visit All the Year One students had a wonderful time last week learning about fire safety. But the best part was when they all got to have a go using the fire hose.

Please find a program attached at the end of the newsletter for the pre-carnival events from 1:00pm on Wednesday, 26th June, and for our Sports Day on Thursday, 27th June.

Stem Fest Next week three year two students and three year four students will participate in the first Stem Fest at Yarrilee State School. They have all been practising using coding programs and problem solving as a team to complete a challenge. We wish them well and hope they all enjoy the experience.

Under 8’s Day Please be aware that any parents with a student in Prep-2 are welcome to attend our Under 8’s Day celebrations.

Sausage sizzle orders on Under 8’s Day (Prep – Year 2 only) need to be in by this Thursday (14th June). Please find the order form attached to the bottom of the newsletter. P&C News P&C meeting tonight in the library at 6pm. All are welcome. The P&C are currently looking for people willing to assist in a working bee, after the school holidays. We are hoping give the school tuckshop a small make over. We are also seeking an Electrician, who may be willing to come in and assist. The following is a list of jobs to be carried out. *Wall removal *Insulation *Bench and Cabinet making

TUCKSHOP NEWS This week due to a change in suppliers we are happy to announce breaka milks will be available in strawberry, chocolate and banana for now these will be in a 300ml bottle for $2. This weeks special is mini pizzas $3 each (Meatlovers & ham, cheese and pineapple) Dinner Table Topics Prep W – Last week we finished writing our retell for Grandpa and Thomas and the Green Umbrella. Ask your child to retell the story to you. They need to tell you as much information as they can remember and the important parts (e.g. Things they did at the beach, the storm came, they sat in the sand car until the rain stopped and then they packed up and went home) need to be in the correct order. Prep/1 – Wow! Our class has been working really hard to finish all of our assessment. In maths we have shown how much we know about time, shape and money! Great effort everyone! Year 1R - As a part of your child’s poetry unit in English, they are to recite a small poem using pitch, pace, tone, volume and gestures. Today, they will bring home a double sided sheet of poems that they can pick from and learn this week and over the weekend. Please help your child practise their poem, so they are ready to perform in front of the class

next week. Thank you for helping your child with their learning. Year 1/2A – We have started practising our poems for the eisteddfod with chappy Amanda. Ask your child about the poem they are learning. Year 2B – Today your child came home with their Geography research task. I have advised students to begin the task tonight so that they can complete a section on Tuesday night and some on Wednesday night. I look forward to receiving the research task back at school on Thursday. We will then complete the rest of the task in class time Thursday. Year 2/3C – Thank you to the many families who helped their children to complete the Geography survey that was sent home on Friday. They now have a lot of information to move onto the next phase of their assessment where they collate their collected data, create graphs and do some simple analysis of the information. It was interesting for the children to find out about the connections that families have with both local and distant places. Year 3D – While we have finished most of our assessment, this week we are going to complete our final mathematics assessment. In addition, students will present their posters that they created for Science on investigating the sun, Earth and us. ☺ Year 3/4M – The students have a big week of assessment ahead. It is extremely important for the students to get sufficient sleep and eat well so their minds are fuelled for school.

Year 4H – Students will spend this week editing and publishing their Asian Folktale. They will also be reading and watching Dreamtime stories as part of our traditional stories English unit.

Year 4/5H – Big week in 4/5H this week to finalise assessment pieces for this term. Ask your child to talk about some spinoffs from the Space Program. It would be great if Year 5 parents could donate a prize for our Trivia Night this week. Just drop them to the office by Friday morning. Year 5N – Thank you to all parents for your continued support during the assessment period. We are close to the finish line! A note is coming home today about prize donations for Trivia Night this Friday. Please keep checking Class Dojo for important updates from the class.

Year 5/6H – Your child has been examining the structure and features of news articles. Ask your child what it means to have a biased opinion on something.

I have rung the company again this week and we have been guaranteed it will be by delivered early next week. Model reading Let your child see you reading, read to yourself and read to your child – often.

Join your local library Find out where it is and what programs and activities they offer, and of course borrow books regularly! Librarians are full of ideas about which books your child might enjoy reading.

Make time for reading Make regular time for reading, even if it is only ten minutes a day!

What do you think…? Encourage your child to predict what might happen in the story, ask them ‘What do you think will happen to….?’, ‘What do you think would happen if..?’ After reading, ask questions that help your child join all the information to make judgements, generalisations or conclusions. Ask them why they think those things.

Break it up Encourage your child to clap or tap out big unfamiliar words in stories and books into syllables, for example, ty / ran / no / sau / rus for tyrannosaurus.

Express yourself! Encourage your child to use punctuation to influence their reading out loud. Encourage louder and softer voices, faster and slower pace, reading with more emotion and expression. Remember to have fun!

Encourage and praise Reading should be enjoyable for you and your child. Always encourage their attempts and praise their efforts.

Talk to your child’s teacher about how you can support your child’s reading.
