LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER: Welcome to Academic Year 2019-2020! Saint Augustine School (SAS) presently has an enrollment of 75 students, the most students enrolled in the history of the school. And SAS hopes to have more than 80 students next year. On behalf of the entire SAS community, I would like to welcome all the new students and families. It is good to see SAS grow.
Students in grades 5-12 are studying a wide variety of subjects. Here are a few highlights of some of the classes. All students in grades 5-8 are reading Will Wilder – The Relic of Perilous Falls in the Introduction to Literature class. Catholic author, Ray-mond Arroyo, upon learning that SAS was reading his book, tweeted the following: “Please give [your students] all my best . . . and tell them the @RealWillWilder said hi. Excited that they are going to @PerilousFalls.”
High school American Literature students recently concluded reading tales from Washington Irving and are now reading selected short stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Junior and senior philosophy students read Pope Leo XIII’s Aeterni Patris (On the Resto-ration of Christian Philosophy) and presented their first quarter project on the pre-Socratic philosophers Heraclitus, Zeno, Xenophon, and Parmenides. Freshmen, sopho-mores, and juniors are studying the Roman Catechism (Catechism of the Council of Trent). Senior apologetics students have read Pope Gregory XVI’s encyclical, Mirari Vos (“On Liberalism and Religious Indifferentism). In their study of modernism, described by Pope St. Pius X as the “synthesis of all heresies”, Apologetics students will be reading Popes Against the Modern Errors and also related passages from the recent book by Dr. Taylor R. Marshall, Infiltration: The Plot to Destroy the Church from Within.

SAS STUDENT COUNCIL
K4/K5 CLASSROOM NEWS
2019-20 STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS
PRESIDENT: I am one of two seniors at SAS. I
have been attending SAS for the past 13 years
and am extremely grateful for having made it
this far. I work at a local restaurant in Hartford
and put my extra time in coming up with ideas
for student council. I want to make this an
enjoyable year for myself and all the other
students. Students put a lot of hard work into
school and it is only fair that we get to have
some fun! It is my goal to make my last year a
great one for all! -Gabriella ZIgnego, Senior
VICE PRESIDENT: I am from a family of 15. I am the eldest daughter of
the tribe. I wanted to be vice president, because I wanted to be able to
give helpful input. What I hope to achieve is to be able to raise money so
that all the students can have fun and enjoy some luxuries as a reward
for all the hard work they do everyday.—Thalia Mills, Junior
SECRETARY: I have been attending this school for ten years, and I am
excited to finally be a part of student council as secretary. I come from a
big family and am the second youngest, so now it will be nice to have
some say that matters. I am excited to help make this school year a fun
one and to help plan new events and fundraisers. I want to have events
that the students look forward to, and I believe that it is our job as stu-
dent council members to do that. I hope the student council can make
some great changes to SAS and bring more excitement and school spirit
through our events and attitudes.—Ivetta Zigengo
TREASURER: I was chosen to run for office, because the only other can-
didates for office were all girls. Putting control into their hands probably
wasn’t going to turn out well. So I ran for
treasurer. I was for the work. I could also
insert a little male representation. M y
hope for this year is that we can do our
service hours as a field trip and take time
from school to go to our Eucharistic Adora-
tion. –Benedict Roxas

JUNIOR HIGH CLASSROOM NEWS By: John Zignego, Demetrius Kusik
The foreword to Infiltration was written by Bishop Athanasius Schnei-
der. Dr. Marshall has offered to have a 60 minute Skyped Q&A video ses-
sion with SAS high school students this year. I hope we can make this hap-
pen. Dr. Marshall on Twitter wrote, “sounds like an awesome school! God
bless your work.” In a personal message to me Dr. Marshall also wrote,
“Keep up the amazing work under Our Lady’s banner.” Other comments
from supportive Catholic Twitter users included: “So refreshing to see real
education again” and “If I ever become a father, I will move just so my kids
can go this school.”
In addition to prayer before each class and the Angelus, high school
students pray each morning Prime of the traditional Divine Office in prepa-
ration for the labors of the day. “O God, come to my assistance.” On anoth-
er matter, SAS will be in need of a full-time middle school teacher for the
2020-2021 academic year. Anyone interested should contact me. Please
continue praying for SAS . . . its students, parents, faculty, and benefactors.
Pray also for the Holy Father and the Catholic Church.
• Ms. Pankow: “In History class, the
students are learning about the ex-
plorers that discovered the new
world. They completed an art pro-
ject that allowed them to be crea-
tive and create their own new world
they would discover if they had
been explorers like those of the
past.
• In Religion class this year, the 5th-
8th grade students are studying the
lives of the saints and the many mi-
raculous phenomena in their lives.
So far we have covered levitation,
bilocation, and mystical hearts.
• Mr. Roxas: “Astronomy students in
5th-6th grade are learning about the
moon and its phases. They are com-
pleting projects portraying the phas-
es of the moon.
Physical Science students in 7th
-8th grade are learning about measure-
ments and the metric system.
Noticeable achievements in the
Math department: Emily Tannel and Ian
Zignego are working at their own pace
and achieving high grades in Algebra.
Hard work pays off!

STUDENT CONTRIBTUION: THE FABLE OF THE SHEEP AND THE HORSE By: Ruby Habelwitz
One day a horse and a sheep went for a swim in the lake. The water was freezing. The
horse got out at once while the sheep was just floating.
“How can you swim in this?”, he asked, as if it was impossible to swim in it.
The sheep replied, “Because of my wool. Of course you don’t have wool, because God
made you with no use at all.”
The horse, shocked at what her friend said, ran off to tell the others. Usually the sheep
was good-natured and kind, but this was purely rude.
When the sheep got out of the water she was freezing. Her wool was turning to pure ice. She thought of the horse’s soft,
warm blanket. The sheep asked the horse if she could use it, but he refused. So did all the other horses. They were the only
ones with blankets. Soon the sheep was kicked out of the farm and died in the woods.
The moral of the story: Don’t doubt the gifts of your friends and of others. We all have special uses and gifts!

SAS SPORTS
VOLLEYBALL The girl’s volleyball team grew to ten play-
ers this year, the majority of them playing
for the first time. The first game SAS lost to
Aquinas. The second game was at home
and the SAS girls had their first win. The
third game, also at home, came down to
only a few points, but ended with a defeat
for SAS. The fourth and final game for the
SAS girls took place at Aquinas Academy. It
was close the entire game, with SAS win-
ning one game and Aquinas winning the
other. It game down to a few points in the
end, but ended in a defeat for SAS.
The girls should feel proud in having
improved so much throughout the season,
of which was the first year of playing for
many of them! Great job girls!
FOOTBALL The boy’s football team has gotten off
to a great start this year! They have
played four games and have won all four,
making them undefeated currently! See
next issue for the complete list of games
with end scores for the season.
Noticeable achievements: Blaise
Zigengo, Lorenzo Roxas, and Tim Zignego
have been outstanding on offense.
John Zigengo, John Forro, Dmitri Kusik,
Tim Zignego, and Blaise Zignego have
made significant contributions to the
defense. Keep up the great work boys!
