XLI Thomas Roberts Family 1. THOMAS AND ALICE ROBERTS, the founders of the Roberts family of Milford Township in the Manor of Richland, are 7 j supposed to have come from Wales. All that we know in refer- ence to their arrival in this country is a well-founded traditional account given by Letitia and Ann Foulke, granddaughters of Thomas and Alice Roberts, to Joshua Foulke, who repeated it to the compiler of this work, Clarence V. Roberts, about 1882. In substance it is as follows: "Thomas Roberts and Alice his wife arrived in Philadelphia about the year 1715-20. They purchased a horse and cart and a few of the absolute necessities of life and proceeded to their new home beyond the lines of lands then taken up by other settlers. They travelled about thirty-five miles north of Philadelphia into what is now Milford Town- ship, Bucks County, locating in a beautiful valley covered with luxuri- ant grass which they thought particularly adapted grazing. This little valley was watered by a small stream which they named Butter Creek, a name which it bears to this date. Here they camped for a time beside a large rock, and proceeded to build themselves a log house, in which they resided until about 1740 or 1742. About the latter date they erected a stone house which was still standing in 1882, but has since entirely disappeared." This was the first home of the Roberts family and with a large tract surrounding, it remained in the tenure of the family for several genera- tions. The site is about one mile from Trumbauersville on the road from Bunker Hill (now Rich Hill) to Sumneytown, and is near the southeast corner of Milford Township. The patent for 250 acres of land in Mil- ford Township to Thomas Roberts, dated Sept. 10, 1734, is enrolled in Patent Book A, Volume 7, page 164, now in the Capitol at Harrisburg. A draft of the Manor of Richland made in 1734 shows that Thomas Roberts owned a tract of 250 acres adjoining John Edwards and others.* In addition to this 250 acres Thomas Roberts received by patent dated * In minute book "11" Pennsylvania Archives. 241 series. Vol. XIX. page 601. is noted a Session of the Board of Property of 1 mo. 5. 1715-16 as follows: "Thomas Roberts. Michael Atkinson. Robert Gerald and John Moor, desire that 200 acres of land in the Great Swamp might be granted to each of them for which they agree to pay for every 100 acres upon survey £1.1. 6s. 8d. or interest untill they do pay. Granted and warrent signed." This agrees with the draft of the four tracts of land on the eastern line of Richland Manor in Milford Township except that John Edwards' name appears in place of John Moor. 468

January 20, 1738, 115 acres of land then supposed to be in Milford butfound later to be in Rockhill Township. This tract was conveyed byThomas to his son Richard by whom it was devised to the latter's son,Jesse Roberts, and remained in the family for over a century.
