small and large group works. We look forward to seeing many parents and friends on the night. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased from the

    Gleneagles talent pool!

    Parent Opinion Survey

Last Monday, I emailed over four hundred randomly selected parents and asked them to participate in the annual DET

Parent Opinion Survey. At the time of writing this article only 11% of parents had completed it. If you received the

invitation and haven’t yet had a chance to complete it there is good news – it doesn’t close until Sunday August 27th.

We would love as many parents as possible to provide their valuable feedback.

    Gleneagles Human Powered Vehicle

The Gleneagles HPV team wanted to take the opportunity to update the school community on what we have been up

to in the lead up to some pretty significant races and competitions.

We have had to make quite a few dramatic structural changes to one of our cars as some of the rules have been

changed to improve safety for the drivers. The students have been working pretty hard with grinders, welders and

saws to redesign our car and once we complete this, we are hopeful that they will be even faster and more aerodynamic than before!

We have decided on our team names ‘Gleneagles Drift’ and ‘Lethal Weapon’ and are now working on how we can

make our HPV’s reflect this. We are quite excited to have some great new sponsors on board for this year who have

generously contributed towards our program, LJ Hooker (Endeavour Hills), Laser Electrical, Appliance Spares

Warehouse. Without their support programs like these cannot run to their full potential and both teams are very

thankful for having these partners on board. We are also very grateful to have the support of Gleneagles, who

combined with our sponsors have made it possible for us to purchase a brand new HPV kit from TriSled. This new car

will make our team even more competitive for our next race in Bendigo on the 19th August, a 10-hour event that will help both teams in their preparations for the RACV Energy Breakthrough on the 22nd-29th November.

  • The HPV program is not just about racing it also combines sustainability and environment and Sam Clift has found some practical ways of reducing our ‘Carbon Footprint’ below.

Tips to reduce your Carbon Footprint

Plastic is derived from oil, always reduce your plastic consumption and recycle when you can

o Use a ‘keep Cup’ or reusable cup, most cafes support and even offer a discount if you bring your

    own cup.

o If you must use a disposable cup then maybe ask to go ‘lid-less’

Get ACTIVE! Cars are a leading contributor to greenhouse gasses and pollution, when you can reduce the

amount that you drive to school or work

o Walk or ride to school

    o Catch public transport

o If you do need to drive, ask around there will be others that may want to carpool with you.

With winter hitting us cold and hard reducing the heating or climate control to a very comfortable 20

degrees is much better for the environment that cranking it to the max. When you reduce your electricity

usage, you reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses produced at power stations.

    News from Middle School

    Year 9

It has been a busy first month back for year 9. The cohort has had many successful events and some very exciting

    events still to come.

Course counselling: We had a great turn out with a large proportion of students and parents attending the information

night. The information night was a massive success shedding light on the pathways offered for all aspiring students.

Students also had the opportunity to attend an excursion to Hallam to get a tour of the facilities and understand the

    programs offered.

On Wednesday 9th August, we had another fantastic turn out of students and parents selecting their electives for 2018. We had a number of students applying to study a VCE subject in year 10, paying consideration to the advantages and

challenges that this presents. Congratulations to all students who have been accepted into these subjects. We are

also pleased to see that many students took the time and energy to explore all their options for next year and consequently making an informed decision. Students who have elected to go to Hallam based on pathway decisions

must be mindful that Hallam will be looking at Semester 2 reports and getting detailed feedback on attitude and

performance both in class and in the yard when making their final decision as to student’s suitability for their program.

  • Outstanding Student achievement:

Nicolas Romari in 9A went to Brisbane at the start of term 3 as he was selected to represent

Victoria in the Artistic Roller Skating competition. To qualify for this selection Nicolas (Armand)

won three competitions earlier in the year. Whilst representing Victoria he trained in the days prior to the competition. He competed in Artistic Roller Skating against representatives from

all over Australia. Nicolas completed a perfect routine resulting in him being crowned as the

Australian Champion for Artistic Roller Skating in his age group. Well done Nicolas!

Upcoming events: There are several upcoming events and activities for year nine students over the coming weeks,

including Gleneagles Cup, Romeo and Juliet Performance our annual English incursion and Science week.

    Year 10

After surviving an eventful end to Semester 1 having completed the ‘Futures Week’ program, exams and work

experience, the Year 10 group have now selected their courses for 2018. In consultation with their teachers, as well as Chris & Catherine in the careers office, students selected a variety of pathways that included VCE programs,

VCAL/VET programs at Hallam SSC and even looked into TAFE and apprenticeship pathways. We are proud that we

have the means to offer such diverse programs to students based on their individual interests, skills and needs.

Term 3 at Gleneagles is offering a number of extra-curricular activities. Students have the opportunity to engage in

writing competitions, enjoy the lunchtime activities run during ‘Science Week’ (14th – 18th Aug) or compete in the Year

10-12 soccer competition being held in the gymnasium.

In addition, the Year 10 Humanities team has been busy organising an excursion to the Jewish Holocaust Centre, which

will serve to inform students’ understanding of 20th Century history prior to their common assessment task. Students

attending the excursion will be placed in the unique position to engage with survivors of this significant historical

    event.

    REMINDERS

Gleneagles College Uniform: Wearing the prescribed College uniform is compulsory at Gleneagles Secondary

College. Students must wear their uniforms in accordance with the uniform policy. We make no apology

for having high expectations and enforcing the rules as set out by the College Council.

    Students are expected to:

be clean, neat and tidy at all times

wear the uniform as described in the Uniform Policy

maintain their uniform in good repair and replace it as needed

wear the uniform in an appropriate manner (e.g. tie worn tied at the collar)

wear their full school uniform when travelling to and from school

remain in complete school uniform during recess and lunchtimes unless they are taking part in sporting activities

wear the compulsory Physical Education uniform for all PE and sport classes and when representing the College

    at sport.

remove the school cap when indoors.

For detailed information about the College uniform expectations see our policies page which can be accessed via this policy link.

Just a reminder to be in the correct uniform and if not to provide a note from parent/guardian

  • Attendance: A reminder to all parents that, when your child is absent, you need to provide a note the day of their return to school, email [email protected] or call the school on 9708 1319. If you are planning to take

your child out of school for longer than 5 days, you need to complete an extended absence application. These can be
