TRURO FAMILY NEWSThanksgiving Eve Service:
Wednesday, November 23, 7:30 pm (Church), Worship with Holy Eucharist for Thanksgiving
NOVEMBER 20–NOVEMBER 27, 2011
Do You Have Room At Your Table And In Your Heart This Thanksgiving For A Guest Or Two?We live in a community with many lonely people who are far from their families at holiday times.
If you are called to extend hospitality to others this Thanksgiving, please indicate by writing your
name and contact information, plus how many seats you have to offer on a white piece of note
paper (provided in the pew racks) and place it in the offering plate when it comes by.
There are many single professionals, single again, internationals and others that would appreciate
an invitation to a warm home on this special day of the year.
Someone will contact you by November 21st to let you know who your guest(s) will be and you
can work out details for pick up or directions to your home.
Let’s be radical in our love to one another!
Young Adults Thanksgiving Sunday, November 20th 6:30–9:00 pmAll young adults are invited to the Gunnell House Nov 20, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm, for our annual Thanksgiving celebration! If you are roughly between
college age and your early 30s, come join us for a delicious feast. Bring a friend and a hungry stomach tonight for a time of good food, friends, and
thanks. Plus, come early for worship at The Five. We’ll begin our meal after the service.
Family Advent NightSunday, November 20th

“You mean I can give this to anyone I want
to?!!” “Yes, Honey, to any cause that’s dear to
your heart, that you’re passionate about, to any
legitimate charity!” “Oh, thank you, Aunt June,
thank you!!!” That was an exchange at our last
family Christmas gathering when my young
niece opened one of her gifts, one that had
nothing to do with anything she had asked for or
anything she could take home and keep or use
to indulge her own pleasure or entertainment.
What she had received was the right to direct
a sizeable (to her) donation (that I had funded)
to any charitable organization of her choosing.
The excitement she expressed (along with the
big hug I received!) warmed my heart! And it was
a great illustration to me of how the joy of giving
can be so infectious—just what I had hoped for
in giving those gifts to several unchurched kids
in my family. That infectious joy was illustrated
again in how excitedly one of the other kids,
not long afterward, went out of his way to tell
me about the community service organization
to which he had decided to give his “gift-for-
giving.” Just one simple way the Lord graciously
has enabled me to help cultivate something of
the love of Jesus, the life of Jesus, and the work
of Jesus in the lives of some of my loved ones
who don’t yet fully know the person of Jesus.
Please pray with me that they soon will know
the Author of that joy.
I recently read this quote: “Some people are
like rocks, they give when you strike them.
Some people are like oranges, they give when
you squeeze them. Some
people are like fl owers, they
give because it's in their
nature to give. And when I
meet people I ask myself do
they smell of Jesus? Have
they known the deep, deep
grace of God?”* The more
I understand of that deep,
deep grace of God, the more
I fi nd that the joy of generous giving, out of a
heart of humble gratitude and obedience, is the
only response that makes much sense.

Cultivating the Love, Life, and Work of Jesus by June Burton
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. —Matthew 6:19–21

National Bible Week, November 20–27National Bible Week has long been established as the week of Thanksgiving. It is the perfect time
to make or refresh your commitment to read scripture daily. In honor of the 400th anniversary
of the King James Bible you may also want to read God’s Secretaries: The Making of the King
James Bible by Adam Nicolson. This book describes the years from 1604 when the Bible was
commissioned by the new king of England, James Stuart, to its authorization and publication in
1611. It is an incredible history of King James, newly arrived from Scotland, and 54 scholars in six
“companies” who worked with the previous English translations, notably Tyndale’s, but also went
back to Hebrew texts for the Old Testament, Greek texts for the New Testament, and Hebrew and
Latin Vulgate texts for the Apocrypha.
“It is one of the strangest of historical paradoxes that the King James Bible, whose whole purpose
had been nation-building in the service of a ceremonial and Episcopal state church, should become
the guiding text of Puritan America. But the translation’s lifeblood had been inclusiveness; it was
drenched with the splendor of a divinely sanctioned authority, and by the end of the 17th century,
it had come to be treasured by Americans as much as by the British as one of the national texts.”
(p. 230)
The characteristic sound of the King James Bible…like the ideal of majesty itself, is indescribably
vast and yet perfectly accessible, reaching up to the sublime and down to the immediate and
the concrete, without any apparent effort. The rhetoric of this translation has, in fact, precisely
the qualities which this psalm [Psalm 8] attributes to God: a majesty that is mindful of man.” (p.
231)
The Truro Library has God’s Secretaries as well as more than fi fteen different versions of the Bible.
You may check out several and try them at home before purchasing one. Or you may want to take
one of the free used Bibles on the checkout counter for yourself or a friend. These Bibles were
donated to the annual used book sale, and we continue to distribute them during the year.
