TRURO FAMILY NEWS

Today is Stewardship Sunday. This is the day

we indicate how much of the fi nancial resources

over which God has made us stewards, we will

return to the Lord in acknowledgment of what

He has done for us all year!

You should all have a Pledge Card. They were

mailed to our homes in the last few days. Plus,

the cards are available in every pew. Let me

explain a few things about the card and the

Stewardship Campaign:

1) Hopefully, you have taken time to PRAY

this week about the amount you want to

pledge. There's still time to pray! Right now!

As you read this in your pew! God will give

you guidance!

2) We are asking every member to make a

pledge. The church uses this information to

set its budget.

3) We encourage you to pledge 10% of your

total income—this is what the Bible calls a

"tithe."

4) We have begun a number of exciting

ministries this year, and we are hoping many

of you will be able to increase your pledge

over last year by as much as 10%.

5) The Pledge Card doesn't have to be

signed—it's between you and God!

But please write your pledge amount on the

both the top and bottom of the card, keeping

the top perforated portion as your record. Notice

that on the bottom of the card (the part you give

to the church), you note your pledge amount as

annual, monthly, or weekly—please write in just

one of these spaces to avoid confusion.

At the end of Tory’s sermon today you will be

invited to present your pledge for 2012 to God

by joyfully dancing down the main aisle together

with many other parishioners!

Thank you so much for participating.

The Joy of Giving by Lawson SperapaniBecause God is the giver of good gifts, when

we give to others we refl ect His generous heart.

The Bible mentions many gifts that God has

given us—life; love, joy, and peace; and the

Holy Spirit—to name a few. I believe we are

most like our Father when we give our time,

talents, and money. Perhaps that is why Paul

tells Timothy command believers to “do good,

to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous

and willing to share (1 Tim. 6:18).”

My husband and I have tried to instill these

principles in our children, encouraging them

from an early age to help others and to give

10% of their allowance to the Lord’s work.

Sometimes they do this grudgingly; other

times they are cheerful givers. When we see

them share freely with others, we rejoice that

they have caught a bit of God’s benevolent

nature. What a joy to see our girls give to the

church’s fl ower fund or to ask if we can provide

a scholarship to a Christian camp in the former

Soviet Union.

I will never forget the thrill I felt when our

daughter asked if she could give her treasured

American Girl doll to two young girls from

a missionary family who were visiting us. “I

don’t play with her much any more,” she said,

“and they haven’t stopped playing with her

since they arrived.” That day our daughter not

only made two girls happy, she delighted her

heavenly Father as well.

wonderful opportunities and reminders

Lectors Needed—If you would like to volunteer to read scripture at one or more of the weekend services, please contact Bill Barto, the Lector Coordinator, at [email protected] or 703.278.8348. Preference is given to those who have attended Truro for at least one year and are at least 16 years old. There are openings for new or returning lectors in three of the four services.

Reading Group will meet Wed. noon November 16 in Truro’s Common Ground. By not meeting in October, participants will have more time to access and to read David McCullough’s new book The Greater Journey. The wait list doesn’t take long if you reserve the book quickly. (For every 6 of the current 450 holds, the Fairfax County Public Libraries own one book.) Other recent McCullough books will also be discussed. Everyone is welcome. Diane Rafuse, 703.591.8617.

learning more about the Truro family, we’ve

designed a special series of conversations

just for you! The Newcomers Series is open to

all; attendance is required for those who are

pursuing membership.

The next series is starting on Sunday,

November 6 2011, 10:00–11:00 am in the

enter from the parking lot. Light refreshments

will be served. Classes are interchangeable.

If you miss a session, you can simply catch it

the next time around. Child care is available

for infants through grade 6.

The sessions will be informational, but include

plenty of time for interaction and questions and

are led by Truro leaders—both clergy and lay.

We look forward to these special times to get

Theology through Literature: What Modern Christian Authors Have to Tell UsNov. 6–Dec. 11, 10 am

Rector's Offi ce,

(2nd Floor of Parish Offi ce Hall)

Taught by Truro member Mark

Filiatreau

We’ll study a few unapologetically Christian

writers that have met great acclaim outside

the Christian publishing “ghetto.” They write

about the deepest things in life, yet don’t

assume their readers have a Christian world

view. We’ll read before-hand and discuss

each week a short story, excerpt or poem from

Wendell Berry, Flannery O'Connor, Walker

Percy, Marilynne Robinson, or Larry Woiwode,

and. Along the way we’ll explore a healthy

“theology of literature,” but even better, a

healthy “theology through literature:” How are

Christian truths embodied in these authors’

works? Why did David write songs and Jesus

tell parables? What do stories and poems give

us that prose and nonfi ction cannot?

As Adjunct Professor of Literature with Patrick

Henry College, Mark Filiatreau teaches classic

texts of western culture, from Homer's Odyssey

through Beckett's Waiting for Godot, as well as

courses in fi ction and nonfi ction writing. He

holds master's degrees in English and Spiritual

Theology. He has been a member of Truro from

1985–91 and since 2008.

Page 3: TFN103011

Jesus taught his followers to pray for one another with power and effectiveness. And his

intention was that all who followed him in years to come would be able to do the same.

Here at Truro our hope and desire is to see that EVERYONE, has the confi dence to pray for

someone to receive spiritual refreshment, or physical or emotional healing. This is a Beginners

101 class in Prayer Ministry and ALL are welcome to attend.

Thanksgiving Bags Of Blessing!“Give thanks with a grateful heart!” So go the words of a familiar song and our hearts swell in

gratitude for our blessings family, friends, love, health, recovery, freedom, laughter, our church and

its leaders and servants, our Lord and God. We seek to act in Thanksgiving for this overwhelming

love and to serve those in need.

And so we do. Once again, Truro will be collecting bags to support Local Outreach Ministries.

This year our annual Thanksgiving Bag Ministry will benefi t the following seven local ministries

supported by Truro Outreach: The Lamb Center, Love the World Fellowship, Sanctity of Life,

Bethany House (Women’s Shelter Ministry),

Bethany Christian (Adoption) Services, The

Hope Clinic, and FISH (For Instant Sympathetic

Help).

Here’s how “Bags of Blessing” works. Bags

will be distributed on Sundays November

6th and 13th. Bags are individualized for the

specifi c ministry you want to support with lists

of suggested donation items. You fi ll the bags and return them on Sunday November 20th,

where they are collected by Truro Outreach’s Local Mission Partners in the parking lot. During the

following week (the three days just before Thanksgiving), bags are distributed to the designated

ministry. If you are away or forget your bag, you can go online to the Truro Website – Outreach

link to see what the ministries’ needs are.

This is a wonderful opportunity for families to share in the activity of giving—giving in thanks for

our abundant blessings. As we bless these various ministries, we are blessed tenfold. Questions?

Call or e-mail the Outreach Offi ce ([email protected] / [email protected]) or any of
