Come and Run for the Kids (or just lend a hand)!Truro Preschool and Kindergarten (TPK) began in 1979 with the blessings of the Truro Vestry.

It is founded on the scripture in Deuteronomy 6 that commands us to love God and teach our

children about Him. Our goal at TPK is to help the children know the love of God as revealed

in Jesus and to grow as Christ grew, in wisdom, in stature, in favor with man and in favor with

God.

Truro Preschool and Kindergarten offers classes for children from 2 ½ through Kindergarten.

While the Preschool is a ministry of Truro Church our entire operating budget comes from

student tuition, donations and fund raising events. We are challenged every year to raise funds

to fi ll the gap that tuition does not cover. We have one major fund-raiser a year – “Running for

the Kids”, a 5K and Family Fun Walk.

The 8th annual “Running for the Kids” is coming up fast and we would love for you to participate!

It will be held on Saturday, October 15 with race time at 8:30am. This community wide event is

held right here on our own Truro campus. Our race course is Track and Field Certifi ed with the

start and fi nish in our Truro parking lot.

You can run, you can walk, you can be a cheerleader! We would love for you to be a volunteer out

on the course or a general helper on Saturday October 15th. Please consider being an individual

or corporate sponsor as well. Come on out and be a part of this wonderful TPK tradition!!

Outreach Sunday & Picnic October 9Bring Your Friends and Picnic Blankets To A Festive Morning

Sunday, October 9 will have an international outreach theme and focus in our morning worship,

with an "Everyone Come Picnic!" following 11:15 worship. The picnic (featuring live music in

the Courtyard, between the Sanctuary and Education Building) will be co-sponsored by our

Outreach Team members and Love The World members. We're very grateful for Brion's Grille,

which will provide mouth-watering additions to our grilled-to-order hamburger and hot-dog

menu! (Brion's is a local restaurant located at University Mall, 10621 Braddock Road, Fairfax,

VA 22032 that provides a delicious meal each month for the Love the World Fellowship.)

Home Groupby Vic and Joan Meyer

Why are we wild about Home Groups?

Only because our Home Group saved us when

we moved to Fairfax 37 years ago and because

over and over Home Groups prove themselves

so vital to the body of Christ.

When Gulf Oil transferred Vic to Northern

Virginia in 1974 we were devastated. For 22

years—all our married days—we had put our

roots down in Haddonfi eld, N.J. and St. Mary’s

Episcopal Church Haddon Heights. There was

not a shopping mall in southern Jersey where

we would not meet someone we knew.

Our mourning turned to dancing, however,

when we arrived in Fairfax and Barbara and

Bruce Reyle invited us to come to their Home Group (led by Jim and Anne Keith). For one

year we found ourselves part of a new family, unconditionally loved and prayed for. We went

from being strangers to belonging! From being outsiders to being insiders. From sitting on the

sidelines to being involved.

At the end of that year, Jim Keith told us we were ready to lead our own home group. The

highlights from the 36 subsequent years include

1. Three sets of singles so comforted in grief/and/or loneliness in our group that

they married.

2. A pre-schooler with an inoperable brain tumor becoming the focus of Home

group’s round-the-clock prayer vigil outside his house on Norman Avenue

resulting in the disappearance of the tumor and confounding the doctors.

3. A blend of all ages: young, singles, marrieds, and elderly enriching us all. (We

think that groups that limit themselves to one age are missing the boat.)

4. God’s word setting us free to talk about the important things of life and to lower

our defenses, to become one with one another, and to love one another.

5. Together being able to be more generous to people in need especially at

holiday time.

6. Our Christmas fete: caroling for neighbors and shut-ins by candlelight becoming

our annual highlight.

7. Taking an amateur show to a nursing home once a year to buoy the sick.

8. Teaching the group ball room dancing and taking them to Blob’s Park for the

family polka/waltz experience.

9. Paramount highlight: The two greatest commandments: loving God and loving

our neighbor tangibly combine in Home Group.

"Theology Through Literature: What Modern Christian Authors Have to Tell Us"—Nov. 6 –Dec. 11, 10 am, 2nd Floor of Parish Offi ce Building (Rector's Offi ce). The class will focus on a few unapologetically Christian writers that have met great acclaim outside the Christian publishing “ghetto.” They write about the deepest things in life, yet don’t assume their readers have a Christian world view. We’ll read before-hand and discuss each week a short story, excerpt or poem from Wendell Berry, Flannery O'Connor, Walker Percy, Marilynne Robinson, or Larry Woiwode, and. Along the way we’ll explore a healthy “theology of literature,” but even better, a healthy

“theology through literature:” How are Christian truths embodied in these authors’ works? Why did David write songs and Jesus tell parables? What do stories and poems give us that prose and nonfi ction cannot? The class will be lead by Mark Filiatreau, adjunct Professor of Literature with Patrick Henry College, where he teaches classic texts of western culture, from Homer's Odyssey through Beckett's Waiting for Godot, as well as courses in fi ction and nonfi ction writing. He holds master's degrees in English and Spiritual Theology. He has been a member of Truro from 1985–91 and since 2008.

Reading Group will meet noon Wed. Sept. 28 in Common Grounds for all interested in discussing “Little Princes: One man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal” by Conor Grennan and “Unbroken” by Lara Hillenbrand. Questions? Call 703.591.8617.

Tuesday Morning Women's Ministry by Sarah Tarvid

I've participated in the Tuesday morning women's group at Truro for nearly four years now. I joined when my daughter was a newborn, and

though life has seemed like an endless parade of changes since then, one constant has been this group of women. What I love about it is that

these ladies have all different lives and experiences, but they love Jesus, and they've been a big part of my learning to love Jesus too. I could tell

you dozens of stories about that, but instead, I'd like to invite you to join us.

We meet Tuesday mornings, 9:30–11:30, in the Conference Room. On September 27, we'll start a new study. The book we'll read together is

called "Do You Know Who I Am?" by Angela Thomas. It is a warm, practical, and helpful reminder of who God is and why knowing God matters

now, in this life that we live right now. It's all about God's love for us - who we are, as we are, where we are. This book was a gift to me and I look

forward to sharing it with you.

If you have never come to the women's group at Truro, or if you haven't come in a while, I hope you will join us. There is childcare (by reservation

- please let us know so we can staff the nursery appropriately). Come spend some time with us, and with the God who loves you so very dearly.

This group is for all women of all ages. Come as you are. Talk a lot or a little. It's all good.

We Love Fairfax—FALL OUTREACH!AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY AND HAVE FUN!

Fairfax Fall Festival—

This year Truro Church will be involved with the Fairfax Fall Festival on Saturday October 8.

We will have a HUGE hospitality booth at the festival. Our purpose at the festival it to provide

a place of rest, relaxation, and engaging conversation.

We are excited to participate in this local event and are asking for your support in the following:

1. PRAY—Please Pray for the volunteer team being formed, for the staff coordinating the

logistics, and most of all for the hearts that God is connecting us with at the Fairfax Fall

Festival.

2. NEEDS—Currently we are looking to borrow a generator and cotton candy maker.

3. VOLUNTEER AT THE EVENT (est. 2 hr shifts)—
