Is it your fervent wish that God would send revival to His church once again and bring in all those He’s calling to Christ?

Then consider coming to the Intercessory Ministry Task Force Breakout session in the chapel during Alive Again.

The Task Force is a new venture seeking to support and expand the various groups at Truro already praying for the needs of others and is in the process of getting organized. This break out session is for you if you:

• Already participate in one of the intercessory prayer ministries at Truro.

Celebration Honoring Archbishop Peter AkinolaWednesday, February 10, 2010The Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) invites you to a celebration honoring Archbishop Peter Akinola and his ministry within the Church of Nigeria and CANA on Wednesday, February 10. Archbishop Akinola steps down as primate of the Church of Nigeria in March. A festal Eucharist beginning at 7:30 pm will be held at Truro Church, with Bishop Martyn Minns preaching, and Archbishop Robert Duncan (of the Anglican Church in North America) celebrating. Vestry HighlightsThe Vestry opened its January 26th meeting with prayer for its work, Truro’s ministries, the congregation, and staff (especially Derek Rust’s back surgery) and a meditation based upon “The New Friars” a book by Scott A. Bessenecker.

Then the Vestry approved Truro’s Annual Meeting date (April 25, 2010 at 1:00 pm), vestry nominating committee, and the judges for the election.

The Vestry also approved a special donation of $10, 000 for relief aid to Haiti. The Finance Committee, after research, chose ACNA’s Anglican Relief and Development Fund and Crosslink International to share this aid.

A task force was formed to develop a transition plan to implement improvements in the way the Vestry governs the church and interacts with the leadership (paid and unpaid) and the congregation. After this task force makes its recommendations, the Vestry anticipates that it will take at least a year to implement all of the improvements determined at recent Vestry/Leadership Retreats.

The Vestry heard a report from its Task Force on Cross Cultural Ministries at Truro, concerning TIPS and the Hispanic Church.

Fr. Tory Baucum reported on his vision of encouraging all Truro parishioners to experience transformative Christian disciplines, such as pilgrimages. He has formed a committee chaired by Paul Julienne to advise him on Adult Christian Education at Truro. Fr. Baucum will represent the Anglican Province in North America along with representatives of other Anglican bodies in North America at the Church of England Synod meeting, Feb. 6–8, and asked for our prayers that the team will winsomely represent our Lord and Anglicans in North America.

Treasurer’s Report: December contributions were $539,366 which has allowed the Undercroft renovation to be paid from 2009 income and the Management Reserve to be increased by $30,000 (of which $10,000 will be used to provide the Haitian Relief funds in 2010). God and His people have been faithful for which we give God glory!

Brazil 2010 Team Formation Jan 31!It’s not too late to join the youth/young adult team for the prayer and healing mission trip to Curitiba, Brazil, June 30–July 14. There will be a team formation meeting January 31, 1:00 pm in the Gunnell House parlor. Grab a sandwich and join us (fruit and chips provided!). We’ll give you all the details on the trip, discuss the application process and talk about fund-raising. New Outreach assistant director Meredith Lilley will be coming to help us. We didn’t know what to expect when we got off the plane in Tel Aviv. I had wanted to return to Jerusalem—and to take my wife Peggy—ever since my participation in GAFCON over a year ago. I had been enchanted then with Jerusalem’s rich history and beauty, and its deep connection to our Christian faith, and I wanted to share the experience with Peggy. So when Tory Baucum invited us to accompany Truro’s class of fi fteen young people on this visit as a culmination of their year-long confi rmation journey, we jumped at the opportunity. But we really didn’t know what waited for us. We would soon fi nd that it was more than we ever could have imagined.

Jerusalem can be experienced and enjoyed on many levels, but I think it is particularly meaningful as a Christian to come face to face with the understanding that not only did events described in the Bible actually occur, they occurred in a particular place—and in many cases, you can stand in that place, and gain a new and deeper appreciation for those miraculous events that happened there twenty centuries ago. We stood on the steps of the Temple where Jesus taught and where Peter probably preached at Pentecost. We walked through the olive groves at Gethsemane, and went through tunnels that take you to the base of the Western Wall of the Temple. We saw the site of the pool where Jesus healed the lame man, and walked the Via Dolorosa, the route that tradition says Jesus took to the cross. And further afi eld, we saw Masada, and fl oated in the Dead Sea!

What made these experiences even more special was seeing them through the eyes of these young people who are being given such a solid grounding in their Christian faith. Although I didn’t really know many of these young people before our trip, I was deeply impressed by their maturity and their spirit. I got to know several of them pretty well, and learned of the incredible grounding in their faith that they received as part of their confi rmation training. In preparation for this trip, they visited both a Synagogue and a Mosque, and had dinner one evening while we were there with a group of Israeli students from Tel Aviv. Reasoning that part of understanding your faith is developing an understanding of what people of other

faiths believe, Tory has made sure that these kids have grounded their Christian faith by gaining exposure to other beliefs. They are stronger for the experience, and I am proud to have witnessed a small part of their journey!

So what did they think of their experience? One of the young people said it was “meaningful, inspiring, and gave me a connection to what

I’ve read in the Bible. It was epic, everyone should go” and another said, “to be in places like the Mount of Olives and the Garden of Gethsemane were amazing and powerful to think of Christ being there so long ago.” But I was most moved by a young man who, after learning about Theodor Herzl (the father of the Zionist movement) and having gone through the Yad Vashem holocaust memorial, said, “I learned about Theodor

Herzl the day we visited the Holocaust Museum and discovered if my great, great grandparents who were Romanian Jews had not listened to Herzl and stayed in Romania, the world of my family would not exist.” The group sat in stunned silence when he made that statement.

Tory has said he wants to make this pilgrimage an annual experience, and is hopeful that youth from other ADV congregations will want to participate as well. We are incredibly blessed to have some unique connections with Christ Church in Jerusalem, and particularly with their rector, David Peliggi. Those connections give us an opportunity to give our young people an experience that almost cannot be duplicated anywhere else, by anyone. What a wonderful way to help these members of our family to take the next step in building their faith!

This was an amazing trip for us, and I’m sure we will never forget the experience. It was made even more special by having the opportunity to witness it through the eyes of these special young people, and we are grateful that we were able to be a part of it. Jerusalem is a place where, as a Christian, we can confront the deepest roots of our faith. It is an opportunity not to be missed!

SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL —In conjunction with the City of Fairfax’s Spotlight on the Arts, Truro will be hosting a Spring Arts Festival April 30th & May 1st 2010. Events will kickoff Friday evening with Broadway vet-eran Bruce Kuhn performing “Tales of Tolstoy”. Saturday will include Bruce’s workshop “Word By Heart”, a marketplace of crafts from area artists, a juried art show, outdoor and indoor concert stages, a food court and a variety of family activities for all ages. Prayer for the Persecuted Church The British magazine The Economist reported in October 2009 that at least 13 Somali Christians had been murdered in the previous few months. They included a 69-year-old man who was carrying a bag containing 25 Somali-language Bibles and a 46-year-old woman who had a Swahili-language Bible in her home. You are invited to pray with others for Somali and other persecuted Christians on Monday, February 8, at 7:00 pm, in Truro’s Conference Room. Communion ClassThe Communion Class Orientation will be held on February 6 from 9–10 am in the Historic Chapel. This is encouraged for all families with elementary age children who have not previously participated in the course., regardless if you receive communion yet or not.

This seven-week course is a parent-led at-home curriculum which has received rave reviews from those who have participated in the past. The study will culminate with interviews of the children and a wonderful Seder celebration

Wednesday, March 31st from 6–9 pm. Those children who complete the course will be recognized and receive (fi rst if applicable) communion on Maundy Thursday, April 1st, at the 7:30 pm service. Truro Library Inventory in FebruaryThe Truro Library Adult and Young Adult Collections will be closed for 9 days, February 5–13, for inventory. No books can be checked out during that time, but books may be returned. We have nearly a hundred books that are more than a year overdue. At the close of the inventory they will be taken out of the catalog. Because we have space for only one copy of most books, many of the missing books will need to be replaced. Please help us to avoid that expense by checking your shelves at home for any library books that you may have forgotten to return.

Books are due one month from check-out. Overdue books may be returned at the main check-out station (lower level of the Administration Building), in Common Grounds, or to the Young Adult shelves (landing outside the Upper Room).

The Marriage Course is designed to build, strengthen, and even mend marriages. It helps married couples learn practical tools to build a strong and healthy marriage. Over seven evenings, couples have the chance to discuss important issues often ignored in the rush of daily life.

For more than twenty years, The Marriage Course has been helping couples build strong marriages. You too can deepen your relationship. You can move from dull to dynamic. You can even turn away from separation or divorce.

Who is the Course for?

The Marriage Course is for married couples who want a strong and lasting relationship, and it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been married. Couples who have been married for close to 40 years, as well as newlyweds, have enjoyed and benefi ted from the course.

It doesn’t matter what condition your marriage is in. If you already have a strong marriage, this course can help you make it even better. If your marriage is in diffi culty, the course will help provide you with very practical tools to help you work through issues. Some couples who are separated have used the course as a way of trying to get back together.

Although The Marriage Course is based on Christian principles of marriage, we welcome couples without a church background. The course is full of practical advice for all marriages, and many couples who are not churchgoers have enjoyed and benefi ted from the course.

What Happens on a Typical Course?

Each session typically begins with a meal. Over a candlelit dinner, couples have an opportunity to spend time together with each other or with other couples.

Dinner is followed by a talk, interspersed with exercises and questions for each couple to discuss privately. During the discussion times, music is played in the background to prevent any conversations from being overheard. At no time during the course is there any group discussion or any requirement to disclose anything personal to anyone other than your spouse.

Marriage And Family Moments: Marriage And Servingby Timothy J. Teague, Ph.D., Director of Pastoral CounselingPeople often say to me, “Shouldn’t I be happy in my marriage?” The question is not unlike “Shouldn’t I be happy in my job—shouldn’t I enjoy it?” Both marriage and jobs are work—consistent work and sometimes hard work. I don’t know if any of us understood the work side of marriage when we were madly in love and couldn’t wait to get married. That was still in the romantic phase when we basically said yes to whatever our partner wanted with little or no attention to what we really wanted. That is what romance does to all of us—we are willing to give, give, give and take little or nothing in return. But after a long enough time period, all of us grow weary of giving unless it is reciprocated.

The biblical model is clear—mutual servanthood or mutual submission: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21)! Biblical submission means to bring oneself under another or bring oneself into service of another. It is not about power or someone dominating another. It is not forced or coerced or demanded. It is not about control. Biblical submission is about knowing someone, knowing that person’s needs, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, giving (and at times, sacrifi cing) to meet the other’s needs even when that person may not be doing a very good job meeting our needs.

Prayer Ministry at TruroJesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Are you tired, discouraged, in need of healing or peace? Truro has a rich and varied ministry of prayer and offers many opportunities to receive prayer or to serve as an intercessor. Have you noticed the prayer teams at the front of the sanctuary in the transepts? Prayer teams are available to pray with you at all services during and after communion. If you are in need of a more extended time of prayer, two members of the Healing Prayer Team will set aside two hours to listen and then pray for you. The Intercessory Prayer Team responds to all prayer-line phone calls and passes those prayer requests along the prayer chain.

The great Methodist preacher, Dr. W. E. Sangster describes prayer as a funnel: “God pours His redemptive power into the world through the funnel of His people’s prayers - the more prayer, the more power. God does not move except in response to the concerted prayers of His people.” Avail yourself of this power. Come for prayer whether your needs are small or overwhelming.
