Getting Ready For
ALPHA!
Serving Communion at TruroLay Eucharistic Ministers, or LEMs for short, help the clergy serve communion every Sunday
and at special events, in the chapel, the undercroft, at the altar rail and the transepts in the
main church, where they also serve the choir, those who operate the sound system and nursery
volunteers. In addition, LEMs serve communion at weddings and funerals, and those in the
visitation ministry carry communion to Truro members who are homebound or in the hospital.
Each LEM is approved by the clergy based on recommendation of the LEM leadership team, headed
by Ken and Pat Smith, who review applications of those proposed as LEMs and interview each
candidate. As LEM coordinators, the Smiths are responsible for training, organizing and scheduling
Truro’s LEMs, numbering 75 to 90. LEMs serve for a month at a time, roughly four months during
the year. The entire ministry gathers for fellowship
twice a year, in June and at Christmas.
“We are grateful to all the faithful servants who
comprise this ministry and who help make
communion a special (and time efficient)
experience during each worship service,” said
Ken Smith. “It also takes a number of Team
Captains working with Service Coordinators to
coordinate details for each service and keep things moving smoothly. We really appreciate their
work as well.”
New LEMs include John and Suzanne Casana, Shirley Coffi eld, Kekelwa Dall, Betty Elkins, Ray
Fleming, Diane and John Hutchins, Janice Keck, David Lilley, Warren Thrasher and Rob Tobin.
Retiring LEMs include Mary Ailes, Tom Ball, Janet Gilroy, Janella Knight, June Leeuwrik, Bill
Love, Laura Mullins, Jim and Peggy Oakes and Victor Pappoe.
Worthy of special recognition is John Hopson who gets the LEM of the Year Award for 2011
for volunteering to serve for almost every wedding and funeral and frequently as a last-minute
substitute on Sunday, as well as practically all the services during the Christmas season.
Thanks also to our Service Coordinators for the 8:30 service—Jeff Oster and Jack Sanborn, and for
the 11:15 service—Betty Graves and Jim Moulton; and to our Team Captains—John and Bette Arnett,
Eric and Georgene Assur, Tom Atwood, Dennis and Gioia Egan, Dan and Jackie March, Jack and
Linda Klenk, Ernie and Diane Wakeham and Jeannie Light who also doubles as Robe Coordinator,
keeping LEM robes clean and mended, along with Sarah McGrath and Sue Hummer.
Matt MaherSunday, January 22 at Truro Worship Services

Our New P.O. Box—Truro has obtained a mailbox at the Fairfax Post Offi ce. Although we will still get mail here at the campus, for security purposes we prefer that checks mailed to Truro be sent to our new P.O. Box. This address is: Truro Church, P.O. Box 820, Fairfax, VA 22038-0820. Using the P.O. Box for your checks assures that all checks will actually be locked up until the secretary retrieves the mail. This is just an added security measure. Please remember that your checks should be made out clearly to “Truro Church”, and that any special designations (such as Legal Fund) should be indicated on the memo line. If you contribute through your bank, which mails checks to us, please be sure to give them this updated address. [Please Note: This address has been updated. In prior weeks the address was published as P.O. Box 802 instead of the now corrected box number 820].

Soaking PrayerJanuary 15, 3–5 pm, Chapel
Northern Virginia is a frenzied place, and many
of us fi nd that Holy Silence can often be elusive.
We long to set aside periods of time to be in the
presence of God, to rest and be still, to listen
and to soak up His love. If these are things that
you, too, are longing for, why don’t you “Come
away for awhile” and join us for an afternoon of
Soaking Prayer—two hours of silent prayer time
just to be in God’s presence. It will be just you,
God, members of our Healing Prayer Team,
and gentle, worshipful music.
Please bring a bible, a cushion/pillow, blanket
something to write on/in (like a journal), and
an expectant heart.
Cards will be available on the entryway table to
write prayer requests. Prayer ministers will be
circulating and SILENTLY praying over all who
come, and for any written requests. The prayer
ministers will not speak to you during this time,
as the point is for you to hear from God.
You may sit, sit and journal, stretch out on the
fl oor —whatever helps you to receive from the
Lord, and does not disturb others. You may stay
as long as you like and leave quietly whenever
you wish.
MOPS: Fellowship and Support for Moms—Do you have a child newborn to age 5? Then you are warmly invited to join Truro MOPS, a special group for mothers of preschool age children. The second Tuesday of each month we come together for savory refreshments, dessert, and coffee, followed by discussions on topics of interest to us as mothers. During specifi c monthly meetings this year, we will also hear from veteran moms and other guest speakers for encouragement, and guidance. Our next meeting will be held Tuesday, January 10 at 7:00 pm downstairs in the Undercroft. Deborah Boyce will be speaking to us about “organizing our homes and prioritizing our family lives.” Childcare is provided. For more information about MOPS, please contact Kellie Singh at [email protected].
Junior Daughters Of The King—“Girls just want to have fun”! And we want them to have fun too, so please come join us! Junior Daughters of the King invite you to join them for their monthly meeting on Saturday, January 21, from 6:30–8:30 pm for a “Movie Night—Pizza Party”. We will meet in the Gunnell House. Meetings are open to Jr. DOK and their friends. It's a new year and a time to “soul search” and think of new beginnings and building on the good work that has begun in you. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Gabrielle Fardwell at 703.273.5087 or Tara Frodigh at 703.927.5941.
The Truro Library Guild needs a volunteer to help with the Truro Children’s Library. No library experience is needed—just a love of books and children. This job is fl exible and should take an hour or two a week and one monthly meeting with the Guild. The books are located in the hallway of the 2nd fl oor of the Education Building. Contact: Emily Thrasher at 703.625.7977.

Notice of Annual Meeting and Call for Vestry Membership RecommendationsIn order to allow greater overlap for new vestry members, our annual meeting will be on Sunday, February 12, 2012. Truro will elect six new
members of our 18-member vestry to replace those whose terms are expiring in April 2012. We invite parishioners prayerfully to discern who,
if anyone, God is leading them to recommend for vestry. Vestry service is a demanding calling and requires a signifi cant commitment of time.
Under the leadership of the Rector, the vestry is responsible for setting policy, ensuring fi scal integrity, and discerning the leading of the Holy
Spirit for Truro. Day-to-day management of temporal affairs is delegated to paid staff or volunteers. Consequently, we seek new vestry members
with spiritual maturity, wisdom, and discernment.
In addition to the above attributes, persons you recommend must be confi rmed members of Truro in good standing, over 18 years old, and
faithful in corporate worship (unless prevented for good cause), and in working, praying, and giving for the spread of God’s Kingdom. Complete
vestry qualifi cations are published in the Truro bylaws.
If you decide to recommend someone, please confi rm their willingness to prayerfully consider serving, and then submit your recommendation
to Katrina Wagner at [email protected] or by calling 703.273.1300 ext. 110 no later than Thursday, January 12, 2012. On Saturday,
January 14, 2012, a vestry discernment meeting will be held for those recommended. The purpose of that meeting is to discuss with potential
nominees the church’s vision and vestry’s role. If you have questions, please contact June Burton at [email protected], chairperson of
the vestry nominating committee, or any vestry member.
