We are so thankful for such a wonderful
and positive Fall TFDE event we held this
Novemeber. The teachers were enthusias-
tic and inspiring, the students were talent-
ed and hardworking, and we ended the
day with sweaty bodies and full hearts.
Dancers took 4 hours of classes in Mod-
ern, Contemporary, Leaps & Turns, and
Jazz. Then we refueled our bellies and our
brains with a brown-bag lunch expert pan-
el discussion. Our attendees were 8th-
12th grade, from multiple schools and
studios, yet they create such a wonderful
collective community when they get to-
gether. Blessed to have such support in
the dance community and young people so
involved in their futures!

and video is accessible at

A special thank you to Quinton Weathers
Our Spring Event was so very inspiring!! 20 students from
different from around the city came to take class with 2 of
our College Ambassadors. Kara Ko (Cedar Park HS/Arizona
State University) opened class with a contemporary jazz
class that left the students breathless. Juwan J. Alston
(Cedar Ridge HS/University of North Carolina School of the
Arts) followed with a contemporary ballet class that left the
students drenched in sweat. Member were presented with
their member certificates and patches and then we headed
over for Applebees to get our energy back and enjoy a night
with old and new friends. I loved seeing students from dif-
ferent schools, grade levels, class levels come together and
talk dance with myself and the ambassadors. Inspired by
their passion and camaraderie!
Special thank you to Westwood HS for hosting the location
and Denise Cochran for helping prepare the social site while
we finished class.
We had our first College Ambassadors this year. Kara, Ju-
wan, and Lauren MacNary (Westwood HS/Texas State Uni-
versity) have been amazing role models for our members.
Kara and Juwan are phenomenal teachers and choreogra-
phers for our event and Lauren was traveling in Europe with
the Strutters. I hope you have enjoyed following their blog.
We also had out 1st student officers, April Rodriguez (Cedar
Ridge HS), Oddalys Salcido (Stony Point HS), Hannah Neville
(McNeil HS). They were a tremendous help in running all of
our social media as well as helping plan and run the
events.
This is our 2nd newsletter with special member benefits,

All State Dancers at
TDEA 2015 Convention
T F D E G R O W T H
At Convention 2014, we celebrat-
ed the following new advance-
ments to our chapter. We had
opened membership up to all high
school grade levels, invited studio
dancers, added a website, email,
and social media accounts. We
developed a logo, Letter Jacket
patch, and membership benefits;
began collecting membership fees,
had a convention booth and work-
shop; and TDEA accepted our pro-
posal to function as our parent
organization. Our College dance
fair was a huge success. We fin-
ished out the year by publishing
our very 1st newsletter; presented
students with the very 1st TFDE
letter jacket patches; hosted a
master class; and sent out our
membership certificates. We end-
ed out the year with 78 official
TFDE members, which also includ-
ed teacher/supporter members.
We have not slowed down for the
2014 school year. This year we
have our very 1st TFDE student
officers who help maintain social
media accounts and plan events
and materials for TFDE. We also
have started a blog with our very
first TFDE College Ambassadors.
They write monthly posts about
their experience as Freshman col-
lege dance majors, answer ques-
tions as mentors to our members,
and will be working our Spring
event. We have also added Insta-
gram; created a promo video;
made our 1st TFDE tshirt; and
are currently overjoyed by the
large numbers of followers/
friends on our social media
which is connecting dancers and
teacher/mentors not just in Aus-
tin but from around the state. We
currently hold strong at over 50
registered members and hosted
our Fall event. The Dance Studio
Experience brought members
together for dancing and a guest
panel discussion regarding
dance studio careers. Our most
exciting new news is the launch
of the new TFDE free web app!

HANNAH NEVILLE, McNeil HS, headed to UNT for History
When did you start dance? What drew you to it? 4th grade, wanting to wear tutus Who is your biggest inspiration? Sarabeth from Lonestar Dance What are your future goals? Graduate with a dance education degree from University of Texas and go on to direct a drill
team Why should dancers join TFDE? Networking, and more chances to learn and dance!!!! Describe yourself in 5 words or less. Cool, happy, silly, funny, lovely
ODDALYS SALCIDO, Stony Point HS, going to study Business Admin
When did you start dance? What drew you to it?
I started dancing in kindergarten. I remember my first solo was performed in my elementary
school's talent show to a song called biddy biddy bam bam by Selena Quintanilla. Initially my
mom was the first to draw me into dancing. Since then, she's been my #1 fan and my biggest
supporter :) . Who is your biggest inspiration? My dreams and goals inspire me daily to be successful in life. I'm very self driven so when I
take a moment to think about what I want and how I'm going to get there I find my motivation to get stuff done. What are your future goals? My future goals are to graduate from a good college and afterwards, to open up my own dance studio or possibly an academy. Why should dancers join TFDE? I think everybody who loves dance should definitely join TFDE! It's such a great organization filled with all different types of
people who share a common interest with yourself. I love when we have events because it's so different from school or studio
dance allowing you to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. For example, dancing with new people, exploring dif-
ferent genres, taking classes from unknown teachers and experimenting new spaces and grounds. I have definitely enjoyed
being part of this organization. There is no reason as to why somebody shouldn't join TFDE! Describe yourself in 5 words or less. Ambitious, Energetic, Diligent, Challenge-seeking
APRIL RODRIGUEZ, Cedar Ridge HS, headed to UNT for Dance
When did you start dance? What drew you to it? I started dance when I was two years old but I would say that I actually started getting serious about my
dance career in middle school. My favorite thing about dance, and what drove me to perform until my
legs fell off, was that it made feel confident and as if I had something valuable to offer this world. Who is your biggest inspiration? The two people that inspire me the most are my parents. I know that's a cliche answer but no matter
what I have gone through in life they have been there to teach me the difference between right and
wrong. I aspire to grow with the same drive and determination that has kept them going through what-
ever hardship may come upon them. What are your future goals? I plan on opening my own studio in the hopes of sharing my passion with all willing to learn! Why should dancers join TFDE? Connections!!!! Is there a better way to meet a vast network of dancers who share your passion? There isn't. Describe yourself in 5 words or less. Always there when you call.
LAUREN MACNARY, Texas State University When/how did you start dancing? I started dancing at age three at Ballet Austin Academy. I guess that was around 1998/1999 not really sure. Wow that makes me sound old. It was mainly creative movement most closely related to ballet. Soon it was ballet, full on. In 5 words ONLY, finish this sentence: Dance is... Dance is, connecting with others through movement. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you related to dance (backstage, class, on stage) The most embarrassing thing that happened to me was while performing in Ballet Austin’s Nutcracker. I mean the big one that happens every year that lots of people go to. So you can imagine how embarrassing it is to mess up a dance while all those people are watching. We were doing the entrance of the dance just fine, but when the transition in the music came, to queue us to move one to the next movement no body transitioned. Thankfully we all did the same thing but the steps did not fit ex-actly to the music the rest of the dance. Our teacher was a little disappointed in us, but was glad that our mess up probably was not noticeable to the audience. If you could dance with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why? I would dance with Fred Astair. Even though I can’t tap to save my life. He inspires me because he always dances with such elegant energy. I hope to dance with his kind of energy one day. Plus he’s gorgeous, although some people would argue with that. In truth I wish that I could be Ginger Rogers and dance with Fred Astair at least once like in those old movies. What is your guilty pleasure? My guilty pleasure? I guess taking photos of my cats. So many of my pictures on my phone are of my cats, one would think that I am an old cat lady. I wish I could have some cool pictures, like sunsets, or something. Pictures that normal people would have. I just can’t help it sometimes, cats are adorable!
ASK AN AMBASSADOR
ASK AN AMBASSADOR
Kara Ko Arizona State University When/how did you start dancing? I started dancing at the age of five when my mom want-ed me to have an extracurricular activity, so she chose dance. I was also super shy, so dance was an outlet to express my inner self. In 5 words ONLY, finish this sentence: Dance is... Dance is freedom and art. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you related to dance (backstage, class, on stage) Last year, in the month of May I perform at my dance company’s annual showcase called Legacy. I was backstage waiting for our contemporary group dance to on, however I realized that there was quite a few numbers ahead of us. So I laid down, just for my body to feel rested because I was extremely exhausted. As I laid down, one of my dance friends yelled, “Kara where are your black shorts!” It was that mo-ment where I realized that I was not wearing ANYTHING underneath my purple dress. It was so embarrassing, however it is such a funny experience! If you could dance with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why? George Balanchine because umm… He is literally the creator of ballet. What is your guilty pleasure? CANDY! CANDY! CANDY! CANDY! CANDY! (Sour Patch.. to be exact.)
ASK AN AMBASSADOR
Juwan Alston, North Carolina School of the Arts When/how did you start dancing? I was first really introduced to dance when I auditioned for Footloose my freshman year of high school. Then my first dance class was actually at Cedar Ridge with Mrs. Searles at the beginning of my sophomore year. From there I began training in a studio at the age of 16. In 5 words ONLY, finish this sentence: Dance is... Dance is… is what I live for. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you related to dance (backstage, class, on stage) The most embarrassing thing that has happened to me on stage is when I fell flat on my butt in the middle of a performance towards the end of the dance! I literally had maybe 12 counts left in the song. I did however recover very well. The most embar-rassing thing that happened to me backstage is probably just falling walking up the stairs to go take places. Then in class, there are so many! Probably one of the worst memories that I have was in contemporary and I went for a jump and forgot to put my feet back on the ground. Landed flat on my face and completely knocked the wind out of my body. It gave the class a good scare though. If you could dance with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why? If I could dance with any one, alive or dead, I would choose Sylvie Guillem. Not only is she just absolutely gorgeous, the way she dances just captivates you. When she is on stage, she owns it and she lives completely in the moment. Just in watching her on stage you feel drawn in to her and connected to her emotionally. What is your guilty pleasure? My guilty pleasure is for sure chocolate peanut butter ice cream. I usually have it at least once a week or once every two weeks as a reward to myself for making it through a long week of rehearsals. I try to make the pint last for up to 3 days, but I get lucky if it lasts for 2.
