Deer Lakes School District Announces2018 Distinguished Alumni Honorees

Deer Lakes School District takes great pleasure in announcingthat five former Deer Lakes, West Deer and East Deer/Frazer grad-uates have been selected to receive the seventh annual Deer LakesSchool District 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award.

The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award is to identify,recognize, celebrate, and honor those alumni who have distin-guished themselves in academics, the arts, public service, profes-sional contributions, or athletics at the collegiate or professionallevel and who, in so doing, have contributed to the pride and pres-tige of the Deer Lakes School District.

They will be recognized at the 2018 Distinguished AlumniDinner and Induction Ceremony on Saturday, May 12. Dinnerbegins at 5:00 p.m. followed by the induction ceremony at 6:00 p.m.at Deer Lakes High School, 163 East Union Road, (West DeerTownship) Cheswick, PA 15024.

West Deer Township Volunteer Fire Company Number Three has along history of serving the community.

Thanks to our 24 founding members: Robert J. Ashcraft, John P.Bahorich, John E. Butler, Sam Caro, Frank L. Cooper, ThomasGieraltowski, Richard E. Heck, Howard Keener, Arthur Kirschner,Frank L. Ladesic, William McDermott, Paul R. McHugh, WilliamE. Moody, Charles Poplawski, Samuel Stevens, William Ratkus,Elmer Sauers, William J. Smith, Robert D. Stalker, John E.Sweeney, Thomas J. Sweeney, Thomas Szymanski, LouisTuminello and W. Lee Worstell; our company became incorporat-ed as a non-profit corporation on March 5, 1963.

Our modest beginnings started with a plot of land donated byVernon G. Frey, upon which we hand-built our first fire station withthe sweat of volunteers and donated materials. The original fire sta-tion comprised a single garage and dirt floor.

Over the past 55 years, our company and our station has grownto what it is today. Thank you to all of our volunteers, past and pres-ent, as well as our community for your continued support!

The Board of Supervisors of West Deer Township is pleased toannounce the 2018 West Deer Community Spring Clean-Up Day!

This event has been set up to collect trash and debris around theTownship as a community. Similar to the "Adopt a Highway" and"Adopt a Stream" programs, the goal of this event is to increase theaesthetic quality of West Deer Township.

We will meet at the Municipal Building (109 East Union Road,Cheswick, PA 15024), and the event will be held on Saturday, April21st. Please arrive at 9:00am for a 10:00am start. The rain date willbe Saturday, April 28th.

Petruska Among Eight InducteesDeer Lakes High

School graduate DanaElder Petruska will be oneof eight inductees at thisyear's Alle-Kiski ValleySports Hall of Fame ban-quet.

The event will be May19 at the New KensingtonQuality Inn.

Petruska played forDeer Lakes in the earlydays of girls high schoolbasketball before headingto Pitt. She currentlycoaches the Mars HighSchool girls basketballteam has advanced to thestate semifinals.

Petruska's coachingcareer has spanned 30years and has includedstops at Deer Lakes and Butler. Her teams have made the WPIALplayoffs 20 times. Petruska has collected nearly 440 coaching vic-tories and she is a long-time teacher in the Mars Area SchoolDistrict.

Other inductees will be Gus Frerotte (Ford City and NFL foot-ball), Chad Hanna (Ken High and Valley athletics); Chip Young(Freeport and William & Mary football), Lewis Lawhorn (KiskiArea and Temple athletics), Patrick McHenry (Arnold, Valley andWake Forest athletics) and two posthumous inductees, Dr. RudyMattioli (Har-Brack and Pitt football) and John Briscoe (Oakmontand Arizona football).

If your child will be 5 years old by September 1, 2018, it is timeto plan for Kindergarten in the 2018-2019 school year.

Deer Lakes School District uses an online student registrationprogram which allows parents/guardians to input student informa-tion right from the comfort of their own home, office, public library,or any other web-hosted locations. New students of all ages mustreside with the school district’s geographic boundaries at the time ofregistration.

Students who are new to Deer Lakes School District use the NewStudent Online Registration process. If you already have children inour schools you are already in our student information system.Therefore after you log into Family Access, please select “NewStudent Online Enrollment.”

Depreciation Lands Museum OffersMorning Summer Camp

Adventures in Pioneer Living - June 18-22 -- for children ages 8through 12 -- Traditional Week long morning camp 9-11:45am ,

You can experience life as an Indian or as a Pioneer!The year is 1792. Revolutionary War Soldiers have been pur-

chasing land here in Western PA since 1783 with DepreciationLand Certificates, as payment for their time in the military. TheIroquois are still reluctant to give up their ancient hunting groundsin the area. And now, the land has been opened for homesteaders!The Militia is mustering to protect the settlers.

Registration for the camp is open to children 8-12 years of age.The week-long Camp runs from 9:00 am until 11:45 am, andincludes Indian and Pioneer units.

Each day will focus on different skills required for living duringthe early days of the Depreciation Lands. You will learn the historyand lore of the area along with techniques such as cooking over anopen fire, flint lock fire arms, spinning yarn and the shelters appro-priate for your unit. Both Pioneers and Indians will be recruited forthe Militia, as in pioneer times.

You will receive an historically appropriate costume to borrowand wear during the camp. Tuition also includes all materials andsupplies.

Allegheny County Accepting Camp Cadet

The Allegheny County Camp Cadet program is accepting appli-cations now through April 16, 2018. The one-week camp will beJuly 29 through August 4, 2018 at Camp Guyasuta in O’HaraTownship. Any boy or girl who resides in Allegheny County, isbetween the ages of 12 and 14, and is in good physical condition canapply.

Now in its 14th year, Allegheny County Camp Cadet is a non-profit, charitable organization funded by contributions from thecommunity, and it is free to attendees. A mini version of a policeacademy, the camp is designed to produce a better understanding oflaw-enforcement activities while living in an atmosphere similar toa police training academy. Emphasis is placed on improving self-discipline and building self-esteem and confidence in a positiveenvironment through teamwork, and it provides an opportunity tomake new friends.

Staffed by local law enforcement officers, including members ofthe Pennsylvania State Police, the Allegheny County PoliceDepartment, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office and other local offi-cers who serve as counselors and instructors. Each day begins withphysical training, followed by a morning run. Cadets then return totheir quarters for personal hygiene and to prepare for an inspection.During the day, activities include presentations by various agencies,a mock crime-scene investigation, a mock trial, and sporting activi-ties.

The 3rd Annual Southwestern Pennsylvania Special Needs Fair& Expo will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 11 a.m. –3 p.m. at The Pathfinder School at 50 Donati Road, Bethel Park, PA.

The Expo, which is free and open to the public, is geared towardpersons with special needs and their family members, caregiversand guardians throughout the southwestern PA, tri-state region. Some of the scheduled activities include music and danceperformances, opportunities to climb aboard various emergencyvehicles, playtime with therapy dogs, face-painting, and more.
