Care Instructions (Australia & New Zealand)

Australia & New Zealand: - AS/NZS 1957 - AS/NZS 2621

Australia has enacted care labelling requirements for apparel and home textiles, as per the mandatory standard, AS/NZS 1957, Textiles – Care. The care labelling phrases in Tables 1, 2, and 3 have been divided into five categories, eight categories, and five categories, respectively

- Table 1 provides care instructions applicable to laundering and dry cleaning of made-up articles, apparel, and household textiles, piece goods, and yarns, including general and warnings; washing; drying; ironing; and dry cleaning

- Table 2 provides care instructions applicable to upholstered furniture (including leather), bedding, and other furnishings

- Table 3 provides care instructions applicable to leather and fur apparel (including sheepskins), including prohibited treatments; general care treatments; drying; after treatments; and wearer’s advice

Labelers must select the relevant Table, based on the procedure in Section 3, then select care instructions from each category, as appropriate to the article. Guidance may be obtained from AS/NZS 2621, Textiles – Guide to the Selection of Correct Care Instructions from AS/NZS 1957. A permanent label must include appropriate and adequate instructions for the care of the product, including addressing:

- both cleaning and maintenance of articles; - phrases of a general nature and phrases indicating that a treatment is prohibited or that special

care is to be taken; - vulnerable components, such as trims, unless their removal is advised; and - other phrases, provided that such phrases accurately describe the required care procedure. Such

phrases may be included on a swing ticket, a pamphlet, or on a package The permanent label must be accessible for examination by a prospective consumer or, where this is not possible, on the package or on a removable label or ticket attached to the article, or on a pamphlet accompanying the article. The wording of the label must be in English, clearly legible, and of medium width lettering, of which no individual letter is less than 1.5 mm high.

Care Instructions (Chile) Chile: - Decree 26, 22 March

1984: http://www.sernac.cl/wp-content/uploads/leyes/ decreto/ds_26-84_reglamento_rotulacion _tejido_y_vestuario.pdf (Spanish)

Chile has established mandatory care labelling, as per Decree 26, 22 March 1984. These requirements apply to apparel, excepting hosiery. Per the Decree, care instructions should be indicated by via four basic symbols to reflect the washing, bleaching, ironing, and dry cleaning processes. These symbols, as established in Paragraph III of the Decree, must include, in this order:

- Washing; - Chlorinated bleaching; - Ironing; and - Dry cleaning

The Decree also establishes a symbol to be used to indicate “Do not wash.”

Care Instructions (South Africa)

Notice 2410 of 2000, Staatskoerant, 30 June 2000 Link unavailable SANS 10011, Care- of Textile Piece-Goods, Textile Articles and Clothing https://www.sabs.co.za/webstore/standards/product.php?id=1400079938

SANS 10011 establishes a system of graphic symbols for use in the permanent marking of textile piece-goods for retail sale, made-up textile articles, and clothing, to provide the consumer, the dry-cleaner, and the launderer with information on the appropriate cleaning processes essential for the care of the textile piece-goods, textile articles, and clothing. SANS 10011 suggests that the appropriate information for textiles and textile products shall be labelled or marked in one of the following ways:

- directly on the fabric; - on a label securely attached to the article (e.g. a sewn-in label on a garment); - on the packaging or on a label firmly attached to the packaging; - on a label attached to the article in a non-permanent way (e.g. a swing ticket or a removable

adhesive label); or - in the form of a note on, or contained in, the commercial documents accompanying the products,

e.g. the invoice, receipt, brochure, pamphlet, etc., relating to the specific article.
