13 HEATED PLATEN OPTION

During the manufacture and converting process of plastic films, the material is subjected to elevated temperatures when traveling over packaging machine surfaces like forming collars, forming plows or other metal surfaces. To simulate this process the film is mounted on the test sled or block and measured against a temperature-controlled platen on the instrument or a stainless-steel plate. Typically, the film is tested between ambient and 80 ° C.

When using a heated platen, it is common that the heated surface for most plastic films will produce an increase in COF. However, not all films will react in the same way to an increase in temperature. To measure this behavior, the 32-76e Friction/Peel tester is available with an optional heated platen. The temperature can be set from ambient to 162° C (325° F). The heated platen option can easily be installed in the field on an existing 32-76e unit (Part # 32-76-08). The heated platen option meets ASTM D 1894 standards for friction testing at heated temperatures.

Operation of Heated Platen

1. Plug AC power cord into the power entry module on the back side of the control box. Plug the other end into a wall outlet. This accessory will accept either 120 or 230 VAC AC inputs.

2. Switch power on using the switch on the power module. The temperature controller will display the current temperature (in RED) and the set point (in GREEN) of the platen. Fahrenheit degrees is the default setting. To set up for Celsius degrees, see the Annex at the end of this manual.

3. Set the desired test temperature by pressing the UP or DOWN arrows on the temperature controller.

4. After the desired test temperature is reached, set up the test as described in Section 12 of the manual.

12. Statistics setup

Test Statistics are values calculated from the collection of all data points during a single test. After a test is run and these values are calculated, the machine discards the bulk data points collected and saves the target Test Statistics. Set Statistics are calculated from the collection of Test Statistics from all tests. These will update after each new test and when a test is deleted.

From the Test Settings menu the Test run statics and Data set statistics settings can be accessed.

15 CALIBRATING THE LOAD CELL The following is the procedure for performing the load cell calibration. Tools required for calibration include a set of certified calibration weights corresponding to the load cell in use and the TMI supplied calibration fixture TMI# 32-06-05-006. The force calibration is performed in grams force only. MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE INSTRUMENT IS LEVEL BEFORE PERFORMING THE CALIBRATION

Installing the Calibration Fixture

The calibration fixture consists of a padded plate with a pulley and a string with a pin on one end and a hook on the other (included). It is highly recommended to use the existing calibrated controller to return the load cell arm to the “HOME” position before beginning any of these steps if possible. Not doing so may cause an issue where the calibration fixture linkage string is too short to preform calibration.

The bottom side of the calibration fixture has a felt pad attached to it. Lift the clamp and slide the plate into position. The plate will stop when the two screws on the bottom hit the platen. Insert the pin end of the wire rope into the hole as shown below.

Lay the string over the clamp and the pulley so that the hook for the weight is hanging freely. The factory supplied load cell (10 Newton) is the default load cell for this system.

• The “Factory” load cell profile is not intended to be calibrated regularly, but to give the calibrator and user a known good reference for verification and partial calibrations.

• We recommend adding the new calibration under a new profile, which can be deleted later.

• Press the gear icon on the left. • Press the “Load Cell” button of the

right. • Press the “New” button on the right to

start a new profile.

• You will need to name this profile. Spaces and numbers are fine, but special characters should be avoided.

• Press the checkmark to confirm.

• Enter the load cell’s capacity in Newtons. • Press the checkmark to confirm.

• Enter the Load Cell’s sensitivity in millivolts per Volt. • This number is a characteristic of the load cell from its original manufacturer. TMI ships the OEM

certificate and prints the sensitivity on the connector inside the load cell arm case. If none of these are available you can enter 3.0 here and then you must do a full calibration.

• Press the checkmark to confirm.

• A partial calibration takes values from a previous Full calibration and a load cell’s known sensitivity to calculate gain values.

• Press the “Full” button if you have calibrated weights and the hanging fixture.

• You will need a calibrated weight set (shown below) for the next part.

• The machine will inform you what weight you will need in the recommended calibration weight series. If you are calibrating with a custom weight set you can change the “Target Force” by pressing the box on the screen that contains the desired value. A prompt will open for you to enter a new gram value.

• Before hanging the weight, press the zero key and allow the unit to get as close to zero as possible. (this may take more than one press)

• Hang the weight on the hook. Let the current force value settle. • Adjust the current force value with the up and down buttons so it is as close as possible to the

target force. • When the desired value is reached press the GREEN check to accept the calibration point (Current

Force is acceptable) and move on to the next weight. Touch the RED X to skip the current and any remaining weights and proceed to the final review screen.

• When moving on to the next weight REMOVE ALL WEIGHT AND RE-ZERO before adding more weight.

• Example: for this screen after you press the check mark it will ask for 20 grams. Remove the 10 grams and re-zero, then add the 20 grams.

• Repeat this process for all of the instructed weights.

• After the calibration is complete, the Final Review screen will appear. • Cycle through the values, review and record them from the table, since they will be put on the

calibration record. • If, for whatever reason, one value is wrong tap that value and you can re-calibrate that specific

weight. • Also record the information in the red box. This information will also go on the calibration record. • These values can be accessed from the load cell menu’s “View” button. • When complete press ACCEPT.
