Message to Our Members

It’s hard to believe that 2014 is almost over. Before we say goodbye to 2014 and welcome in 2015, let me say thank you for supporting your Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. We are proud to say that Myrtle Beach Area Chamber thrives because of committed business members like you.

I also would like to thank our outgoing chairman, Ted Fortenberry, and the board of directors for their outstanding leadership and service. A lot of perseverance, dedication and commitment from the board of directors, committee members and entire chamber staff resulted in positive results this year for our organization and in our community. If you read this this column, you’ll know that every December I share the chamber’s holiday wish list. I was looking back at the first wish list I wrote in 2004 and, although 10 years have passed, some things never change. Once again this year, I’ll be hoping for another storm-free hurricane season, federal funding for our roads and airport, continued success with area festivals, even more terrific networking and educational classes, continued strengthening of the economy, and a record year of visitation. One item that was on the 2004 list “Pro-Grand Strand legislation, including a uniform later school start,” is making an appearance again. If you attended last month’s Legislative Luncheon, you heard that a few people in our state want to push to allow schools to start in July or early August. If we want to ensure that schools will continue to start no later than mid-August, we’ll have to fight this battle all over again.

A few additions that weren’t on the 2004 list are:

• Continued engagement on our social media sites for both VisitMyrtleBeach.com and MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com.

• Another successful out-of-state marketing campaign funded by the 1 percent tourism fee, local accommodations taxes, state funds and private contributions bringing more tourists than ever before. Plus, continued positive national international coverage, generating millions of dollars of free publicity for the entire Grand Strand.

• Record attendance at our ever-growing Grand Strand sporting events, including MyrtleBeach.com Myrtle Beach Marathon, Divas Half Marathon and 5k Series, Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon, and of course, the Big South Championships. And we are looking forward to the new sports complex opening in 2015 which will put more heads in beds.

And of course, the entire chamber staff always wishes for increased opportunities for our members to be even more involved in the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and continued success for all businesses in the community.

While some things never change, other things are certain to change. With this in mind, we sincerely hope that 2015 is a prosperous year for everyone. On behalf of our staff and board of directors, warmest wishes for this holiday season and a safe and healthy 2015.

Brad Dean, President & CEO Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce

Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has repeated its five-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, placing it among the top 1 percent of more than 7,000 chambers.

The accreditation is based on sound policies, effective organizational procedures and positive impact on the community. The chamber earned a perfect score in the facilities section and was commended for its comprehensive board of directors orientation handbook, establishing itself as an advocate for the business community through a variety of practicing including hosting fundraisers in support of business-friendly candidates, and for its efforts to provide a no-cost online forum for members to post job openings and links to continuing education opportunities.

The chamber earned its first five-star rating in 2010 and will keep its current designation until 2019.

Diana Greene, executive vice president of MBACC Membership Programs & Services, headed the review process.

“To achieve this 5-Star rating, staff once again performed an intensive

self-assessment of our operations in nine sections that covered everything from governance and governmental affairs to program development and benchmarking. The process provided an opportunity to review what has been accomplished, but, more importantly to chart the path forward,” Greene explained. “The accreditation process combined into one document all of the outstanding achievements and contributions of board members, volunteers and staff who make the chamber a 5-Star organization. We should all be extraordinarily proud of this milestone achievement. It was a true team effort.”

Brad Dean, president and CEO, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, praised the chamber and staff for being recognized with the top rating of 5-Star Accreditation. “I am impressed every day with the impact this chamber has on the community and our members,” Dean said. “There is a lot of hard work being done to move this community forward and to have the distinction of being one of the top chambers in the country adds to our credibility and effectiveness.”

U.S. Chamber Accreditation is the only national program recognizing chambers

for their effective organizational procedures and community involvement. Accreditation allows chambers to renew, improve and promote sound business practices, policies and procedures.

Local chambers are rated Accredited, 3-Stars, 4-Stars or 5-Stars. The final determination is made by the Accrediting Board, a committee of U.S. Chamber board members and chamber executives from across the country.

About the U.S. Chamber The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.

Keep Calm

by Anjana DuffTraveling during the holidays can be one of the most hectic and stressful aspects of the season. On top of all the holiday activity – school

plays and recitals and hosting parties, and attending parties, and shopping and wrapping and baking - traveling during this time can add another layer of frazzle to the holiday mix. Keeping these tips in mind when you are planning your travel, and your travel experience is sure to be less stressful.

• Leave early: When planning your trip, choose early morning flights. Airports are always less busy when normal people would rather be home sleeping. Also, flights tend to be on time in the morning and become more and more delayed as the day goes on. The hardest part is getting up and getting to the airport, but once you are there, you will be happy that you did.

• Check in, pay for bags, and print boarding passes at home: This will save you time at the airport. You will be one step closer and quicker to getting to the gate on time.

• Confirm flights: With airlines continuing to cut back on service, it’s more important than ever to confirm your flight several days before you leave – that way you’ll have a little leeway if it is necessary to make alternate plans.

• Be prepared for slow lines: During holiday rush, there is more than the usual slowdowns at security. Even though the TSA’s liquid and gel rules have been around for years now, people who fly very rarely may not be familiar with all the ins and outs. Also, new screening machines can catch even frequent travelers off guard. Try to stay patient.

• Be prepared for delays: Carry on books, healthy snacks, entertainment for the kids – everything you might need to pass the time in case of airport delays or waiting on the runway.

• Have printouts: Carry hardcopies of all your confirmations and itineraries with all the phone numbers, flight numbers, confirmation numbers, addresses and any other important information you may need for your airline, hotels, rental cars. Electronics

die and charging is not always easy or accessible. Directory assistance is expensive, and most airports do not have free Wi-Fi.Carrying paper may sound old fashioned, but it is often quicker and easier for reference.

Most important, keep your cool! Remember that airline employees are busy and also stressed, and few respond well to anger. They would rather be home with their families than dealing with irritable passengers. A little empathy goes a long way. Use these tips to help make your holiday travels more relaxing. You may find yourself at the airport counting your blessings instead of the minutes.

Wishing you a very happy holiday season, and, as always, Bon voyage, and safe travels!

benefit for business.

referralsBusiness referrals are one of the most valuable benefits of chamber membership. Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce receives thousands of requests each month for referrals for specific products and services. We refer chamber members to visitors, newcomers, businessesand area residents.

Each day our front desk and Com-Connect, the chamber’s offsite call center, receive phone calls, emails, live chat and walk-in traffic from potential customers looking for businesses that can help them with specific goods or services. Naturally, only chamber member businesses are referred, providing potential new customers, and keeping with our goal of helping member businesses grow.

In this year’s membership survey, business referrals ranked highest (81 percent) as the most important chamber benefit for their business.

While restaurants top the list for the highest number of referrals, other chamber member businesses, like advertising and Member-to-Member Discounts have seen a tremendous increase in referrals. Hint – If your business doesn’t participate in the Member-to-Member Discounts program, you are losing out on free referrals. See Page 3 to sign up. A little more than 5,110 visitors have clicked through – knocking on the Web door – of the Member-to-Member Discounts category (already surpassing last year’s year-end total of 3,827. And the advertising category has seen 880 visitors

Ebola and the hospitality industry

As the Ebola situation evolves in the United States, our partner, the American Hotel & Lodging Association, remains committed to sharing the latest resources and updates with the industry. They are in close contact with government officials on the latest developments and how they may impact you directly or indirectly.

As you know, the nation’s top health officials and government advisors continue to press for calm, reassuring the American people that the dangers of a serious outbreak in this country remain extraordinarily low. While the risk may be low, we understand the need for hoteliers to take steps to protect guests and employees should a concerning situation ever arise.

With that mind, AH&LA has partnered with the risk management firm AON and the Garvy Group to provide a set of protocols tailored specifically to the hotel industry. These documents provide recommendations on how to identify anyone who may be at risk of Ebola, and what actions you can take.

For additional Ebola resources, please visit ahla.com.

With the holiday season here, we suggest you take a page from Ol’ St. Nick’s playbook and enjoy this merriest of seasons here in the Myrtle Beach area. Call it an early present to yourself.

A holiday tradition continues with the 28th Annual Springmaid Beach Arts and Crafts Festival. Held at Springmaid Beach Resort, a wide variety of vendors will offer unique gifts, gourmet food items, candles, apparel and so much more. There are plenty of potential Christmas gifts just waiting to be discovered.

We’re also pulling out all at the 11th Annual Christmas Towne at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. This free, family-friendly event is sure to get everyone feeling festive.

As everyone knows, lights are a vital component of this time of year. There’s the phenomenal display courtesy of Brookgreen Gardens’ Night of a Thousand Candles, which enters its 15th year with a wonderful new feature – an 80-foot-tall China fir tree covered in 60,000 lights.

Over at Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland, you’ll gaze in wide wonder at the pageantry of an electric light display that will fill yours and your family’s hearts with an abundance of holiday cheer.

However, these certainly are not the only place to see twinkling lights. Everyone from the folks at Broadway at the Beach to the Grand Strand’s 12 individual communities get in on the action with tree-lighting ceremonies and fun parades.

Over at The Carolina Opry, their holiday show full of singing, dancing, clogging and comedy is sure to please the masses. But that’s certainly not the only yuletide extravaganza in town. Enjoy the season with wonderful themed performances at Legends in Concert, The Palace Theatre, Alabama Theatre, Medieval Times, Pirates Voyage and so many others.

That perennial holiday staple, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” will once again be a part of your yuletide celebration. Come and see the Myrtle Beach area’s Atlantic Stage bring the tale of Ebeneezer Scrooge to life.

You can bet your bottom dollar that Santa’s heading to the beach on Dec. 26.

insiderCVB

The sounds of the season are brought to life with the Long Bay Symphony’s presentation of “Musical Classics for the Holiday Season,” and “Christmas and Carols and All That Jazz” that is courtesy of the Carolina Master Chorale.

Those wanting a little history with their festivities should head to the Kaminski House Museum’s “A Very Fashionable Christmas.” The dining room, library and drawing room will feature Christmas décor from a number of periods in American history.

What about Santa himself? Before he handles his holiday chores, the big man can be spotted at any number of spots along the Grand Strand. The Myrtle Beach State Park and Barefoot Landing are just a few places he’s been known to spread holiday cheer.

Then there’s the beach itself. With mild temperatures, the holidays are still a nice time of year for a little walk along the Atlantic Ocean.

As you can tell, there’s no better place to enjoy this most wonderful time of year than right here along the Grand Strand. Go to GrandStrandEvents.com for a complete listing of events throughout the season. And happy holidays!
