TEST PLANS, ESTIMATES AND STRATEGIES

One question from ISTQB (Foundation Level)

Page 2: Test plans

QUESTIONWhat is the primary difference between the test plan, the test design

specification, and the test procedure specification? a. The test plan is for managers, the test design specification is for

programmers and the test procedure specification is for testers who are automating tests.

b. The test plan describes one or more levels of testing, the test design specification identifies the associated high-level test cases and a test procedure specification describes the actions for executing a test.

c. The test plan is the least thorough, the test procedure specification is the most thorough and the test design specification is midway between the two.

d. The test plan is finished in the first third of the project, the test design specification is finished in the middle third of the project and the test procedure specification is finished in the last third of the project.

Test Plan

• Writing a good test plan is easier than writing a novel, but both tasks require an organized approach and careful thought.

• Specify WHO will do WHAT WHEN and (at least in a general way) HOW.

Page 4: Test plans

Test Design

• (1) The process of transforming general testing objectives into tangible test conditions and test cases.

• (2) A document specifying the test conditions for a test item, the detailed test approach and identifying the associated high level test cases.

• Test conditions can be identified for test data as well as for test inputs and test outcomes.

Page 5: Test plans

Test Procedure

• A document specifying a sequence of actions for the execution of a test. Also known as test script or manual test script. [After IEEE 829]

Free WEBINAR - Test Estimation

• How many testers do we need? How many test cases do we need? How many bugs will testing find? How long will testing take? Those are good questions, but those questions are often hard to answer.
