ABOUTJUMPWITHJILLJump with Jill is a live rock ‘n roll concert about nutrition that travels to schools across the nation. The show takes childhood obesity by storm, serving as a kid-appropriate solution for kicking off Wellness Committee initiatives, reinforcing classroom learning, and supporting a healthier cafeteria menu. By using original music, movement-based learning, and a compelling character, Jump with Jill uses the same tools normally used to sell junk food and keep kids sedentary into a powerful tool for teaching healthy habits. The interactive experience not only makes eating breakfast and drinking water cool, but helps increase retention of these important health messages.

Created by registered dietitian and musician Jill Jayne, Jump with Jill has been performed 750 times for 170,000 kids all over the United States. The songs performed in the show are the hit tracks from the show’s soundtrack, Get Me Goin’. The songs are set up and transitioned with kid-appropriate explanations of the song content. The topics covered include respecting your body, eating breakfast, drinking more water, getting enough calcium, exercising, examining food packages more closely and eating less junk food. The show is both educationally sound and completely rock n’ roll. (Live show run time: 1 hour)

THESTORYTHEEARLYYEARSJill was born in Pittsburgh to an art teacher and construction worker, where she learned how to teach and how to work. In high school, Jill was captain of the cross-country team, lead of the musical and valedictorian. Jill attended Penn State where she graduated with degrees in nutrition and theater. She developed a reputation as the singing nutrition major by creating a popular musical about Penn State’s football coach and producing rock ‘n roll versions of the Penn State fight songs that appeared on ESPN. Just before graduation, Jill landed a job as the writer and host of a nationally-syndicated children’s nutrition program on PBS. Realizing that she could apply her interests in media to address the growing childhood obesity epidemic, Jill moved to the children’s entertainment capital of the world, New York City. While pursuing her registered dietitian (RD) credential and MS in Nutrition Education at Columbia University, Jill racked up stage credits as an off-Broadway actress, public school teacher, Radio Disney DJ, model and puppeteer.

DEVELOPMENTOFJUMPWITHJILLDrawing from her experience in entertainment and training in nutrition, Jill decided to create her own show that could use the same tools of effective mass media to teach kids about health. Jump with Jill debuted in 2006 in Central Park as a free street show, where Jill took tips in a pot. During this time, Jill was also writing and performing with Sunset West, a rock band formed with her brother Mark, spending summers on The Vans Warped Tour and a season of The Next Great American Band from the producer’s of American Idol on FOX. Jill decided to combine the most successful elements of the rock band and the nutrition street show into the greatest nutrition rock show the world would ever see. The Jump with Jill CD was released in 2008 and by 2009, the Jump with Jill show completed the first national tour. CDs were selling, Jill was blogging, people were Friending and reporters wanted interviews.

TODAYSince Jump with Jill’s inception, the show has been performed 750 times for 170,000 kids across the United States. Jill is now a professional Rockstar Nutritionist, and that little idea to use entertainment to address childhood obesity is now a company, Note to Health. Jill keynotes regularly at conferences throughout the country about the science behind her work. Jill is now an expert at creating and delivering interactive media about health for kids and families. She is the poster child for redefining how we teach kids about health, taking her rock ‘n roll nutrition approach to other age groups, audiences and media formats.

Research on Jump with Jill demonstrates kids are tuned in to the Rockstar Nutritionist. Not only does Jump with Jill get kids rockin’ and learnin’, the messages translate into measurable behavioral improvements. These changes include an increase in physical activity, drinking more water and drinking less soda. Even seven months after seeing the show, kids could still recall the messages, particularly about the importance of physical activity. Not bad when you consider how easily kids forget their homework and that Jill’s one time intervention is competing with the well-funded, unhealthy competition kids see daily in advertisements.

STUDYDETAILSIn support of America on the Move, Fort Wayne Cardiology in Indiana conducted an independent evaluation of Jump with Jill in the fall of 2009. Researchers determined the show had a meaningful impact on 3rd, 4th and 5th graders’ behavior with regard to health and fitness. Seven weeks after watching Jump with Jill, 153 students completed a questionnaire examining their responses to the performance.

SPECIFICFINDINGS

AFTERSEEINGTHEJUMPWITHJILLSHOW:

• 75% of all students reported trying to be more active

• 81% of 4th graders and 74% of 3rd graders reported trying to drink more water.

• 58% of the 3rd graders reported trying to drink less soda.

• 80% of 3rd graders reported telling a parent about Jill’s health and nutrition messages.

• More than half of 3rd and 4th graders reported that a family member had changed their behavior due to Jill’s messages – drinking more water, drinking less soda and/or being more active.

SEVENMONTHSAFTERJUMPWITHJILLOf particular significance is a follow-up study conducted seven months after students’ exposure to Jump with Jill. The message regarding the importance of physical activity remained especially strong and continued to be recalled at similar rates to the initial assessment at seven weeks.(1)

(1) Follow-up results apply only to 3rd and 4th graders, as 5th graders were not available for the follow-up study because they moved to the Middle School.
